Commissioned for Nishinomiya City Wind Orchestra's 50th anniversary. "Ballad" refers to a kind of European folk song known since the Middle Ages, having elements of dramatic conversation and lyrical poetry. It became a general term for narrative song in the 14th century, and Ballade in the 19th century was a genre of instrumental music in the narrative style. I composed this work with an image of a fictitious hero, hence the title. The work is roughly divided into five parts. The appealing solo line, the 4th and 5th disjunctmotion motifs rising steadily, the rapid-rhythm style sounding like a mixture of Western "Tarantella" and Korean traditional "Jajinmori Jangdan", and the lyrical comfort melody essentially comprise the music.
Chang Su Koh
Part I of the Armenian Dances is built upon five Armenian folk songs which were first notated, purified, researched and later arranged by Gomidas for solo voice with piano accompaniment, or unaccompanied chorus. In order of their appearance in the score, they are : Tzirani Tzar (The Apricot Tree); Gakavi Yerk (Partridge's Song); Hoy, Nazan Eem (Hoy, My Nazan); Alagyaz and Gna, Gna (Go, Go).
The Apricot Tree consists of three organically connected songs which were transcribed in 1904. Its declamatory beginning, rhythmic vitality and ornamentation make this a highly expressive song.
The Partridge's Song is an original song by Gomidas; it was published in 1908 in Tiflis, Georgia. He originally arranged it for solo voice and children's choir, and later for solo voice with piano accompaniment. It has a simple, delicate melody which might, perhaps, be thought of as depicting the tiny steps of the partridge.
Hoy, Nazan Eem was published in 1908, in a choral version arranged by Gomidas. This lively, lyric love song depicts a young man singing the praises of his beloved Nazan (a girl's name). The song has dance rhythms and ornamentation which make it an impressive, catchy tune. Alagyaz (name of a mountain in Armenia), was first written by Gomidas for solo voice with piano accompaniment, and also in a choral arrangement. It is a beloved Armenian folk song, and it long-breathed melody is as majestic as the mountain itself.
Go, Go is a humorous, light-textured tune. In performance, Gomidas coupled it with a contrasting slower song, The Jug. Its repeated note pattern musically depicts the expression of laughter. This song also is in recitative style.
Nessun dorma (None shall sleep) is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot, and is one of the best-known tenor arias in all opera. It is sung by Calaf, il principe ignoto (the unknown prince), who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded.
In the act before this aria, Calaf has correctly answered the three riddles put to all of Princess Turandot's prospective suitors. Nonetheless, she recoils at the thought of marriage to him. Calaf offers her another chance by challenging her to guess his name by dawn. (As he kneels before her, the Nessun dorma theme makes a first appearance, to his words, "Il mio nome non sai!") If she does so, she can execute him; but if she does not, she must marry him. The cruel and emotionally cold princess then decrees that none of her subjects shall sleep that night until his name is discovered. If they fail, all will be killed.
As the final act opens, it is now night. Calaf is alone in the moonlit palace gardens. In the distance, he hears Turandot's heralds proclaiming her command. His aria begins with an echo of their cry and a reflection on Princess Turandot.
Nessun Dorma achieved pop status after Luciano Pavarotti's 1972 recording of it was used as the theme song of BBC television's coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. It subsequently reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart. Although Pavarotti rarely sang the role of Calaf on stage, Nessun Dorma became his signature aria and, in turn, a sporting anthem in its own right, especially for football.
Few fictional characters have been as prolific in mainstream entertainment as the Man of Steel. From the original comic stories in the 1930s to the Clayton Collyer radio show and Paramount’s animated shorts in the '40s, the Kirk Alyn television shows of the '50s, the musical adaptation for theatre and George Reeves series of the '60s, the feature films of the '70s and '80s, the television spin-offs of the '90s and '00s, and finally, a resurrection to the big screen in 2006, the legend of Superman has thrived for more than 60 years. Upon the first major motion picture production in the mid-'70s, director Richard Donner and his producers determined that the character would be treated with respect while, after all his adventures, providing him with a massive scale on which to generate his wonder. Their success in that production yielded four Oscar nominations (with one win) and a permanent “most favored Superman” status for actor Christopher Reeve.
Released in 1978, this classic film helped pave the way for future silver screen appearances by other comic book heroes. The film score by Mr. Williams is a masterpiece of bold themes and tender moments. Here is an authentic transcription for band of the Superman March from the original soundtrack.
The trombone concerto was created in 2020-2021 and has three movements. After a short introduction the first movement, Vivace “Dual Drama”, features a very rhythmical theme, inspired by Afro-Brazilian ritual music. The "B" section introduces a joyous theme with irregular meters ushering in a conclusion where the first theme returns powerfully with an accelerando coda.
The second movement, Largo “Contemplation”, is peaceful, and the soloist has a dreamfully solo. Some dramatic outbursts occur, but the peaceful mood comes back and concludes the movement.
The third movement, Allegretto - “Glad Triumph”, brings a theme in fourths. The second theme remembers some of the ritual music found in the first movement. After a cadenza that mixes the themes of all movements, the concerto ends in a very uplifting mood.
This piece is dedicated to Peter Steiner who performed both the orchestral and band premiers in 2022.
This is the biggest piece I’ve written since being medicated for ADHD [attention deficit hyperactivity disorder] (I was diagnosed in mid-2020), and it’s the most substantial piece I’ve written since the start of the pandemic. (I’ve written very little; it was basically impossible for me to motivate myself when concerts grinded to a halt. Things feel much more normal -- and creative -- again.)
So the idea with this one, partially by design, but largely just because it happened to turn out this way once I started writing, is that of emerging from darkness, “a deep reverberation,” with the return of some sense of normalcy, coinciding with, at least for me, some hope of an improvement of mental health.
That said, none of this piece is sorrowful. It starts with handbells! (Thank you, Larry Livingston, for your help with that!) But it does spend eight minutes pulling back and forth between levels of tension before finally “filling with stars.”

Racer Instrumental Music Academy (RIMA) is a week-long summer music camp at Murray State University. Be part of a large concert band and prepare a variety of fun and challenging band literature, culminating with a final Saturday morning showcase concert. Students will improve ensemble performance skills, focusing on intonation, balance, blend, tone quality, and musicianship. Campers will get an early taste of college life in the residence halls and will be provided with a full meal plan during their stay. Each day, campers will walk to and from their music courses. Under the guidance of faculty and residential counselors, evening social activities will include swimming, bowling, karaoke night, dance, concerts, and recitals.
