News and Updates
The Bradford district has been given the accolade of ‘Emerging Destination of the Year 2018’ for Europe by the tourist bible The Luxury Travel Guide.
First image of the new Bradford City Centre Market released The proposals to redevelop Bradford City Centre’s markets have been revealed with a recommendation that the Council progress plans to develop a ‘food focused’ market on Darley Street, while redeveloping Kirkgate Market as a separate, non-food market in the Kirkgate Centre. The proposed design shows a significant glass frontage to encourage an open feel to the market and provide better links between Darley Street and Piccadilly, with a canopy over part of Darley Street to allow for more outdoor markets and trading. The plans are part of a wider strategy to help support local trade and revitalise the area of the city centre from Darley Street to the ‘Top of Town’ area around Oastler Market. The new plans have been welcomed by market traders who were consulted on the proposal, with 78% of traders stating that they were in favour of the Council’s plans. The area will form part of a ‘Top of Town Masterplan’ by the Council, which is in the early stages of development. The plan will provide a strategy to enable the creation of an attractive, resident friendly, healthy and sustainable environment in the city centre, with landscaped, traffic calmed street infrastructure, and high quality public realm and community spaces.

Bradford announced as Emerging Destination of the Year
The guide, which searches for the most impressive destinations, accommodation and hospitality across the world, chose the district’s ‘literally hundreds of historically significant sites’ as one of its highlights. The judging panel praised Bradford as a ‘modern cosmopolitan city with a thousand stories to tell’. The Luxury Travel Guide’s report mentions that the district was selected as the first ever UNESCO City of Film, has its own UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saltaire, has Haworth the home of the Brontes and Keighley Worth Valley Railway, as well as the multi-award winning City Park and Little Germany. The judges were also particularly impressed with the way the Bradford district has integrated its local communities into its tourist offerings, embracing both its modern multicultural status and its impressive heritage all delivered with a sense of ‘welcoming hospitality which is quintessentially British’.

Ian Ward addresses guests at the BID Business Plan launch in July
Does Bradford need a BID? This autumn businesses in Bradford city centre will be invited to vote on the proposed formation of a business improvement district (BID). If successful, the BID will generate £2.5m over the next five years, which will be used to fund a range of projects designed to improve the city centre. As well as tackling key issues around cleanliness and safety, the BID will also have a huge impact on Bradford’s cultural scene. To find out more we spoke to BID Chair Ian Ward. What impact will the BID have on events and culture in the city centre and how much will be invested in promoting new and existing events? The BID will play a huge role in helping to make Bradford a more vibrant and exciting place to be. As part of the overall plan to invest £2.5 million over its five-year term, a budget of £425,000 will be available to fund and support events including the introduction of an annual Festival of Light, vintage bus trips, heritage trails and street markets. It will also fund art installations, visitor routes and lighting schemes throughout the city centre. The BID will also look to create a support package to help organisers deliver successful
10
city centre events. The BID will be investing a further £445,000 in promotion and marketing, ensuring greater lobbying, representation and championing of the city. Which will give our events a much better platform to promote themselves from. So, all in all, it should be fantastic news for Bradford’s cultural sector. The business plan sets out a range of objectives under the ‘Alive’ and ‘Promoted’ headings, how were these established and how will they be delivered? All of the proposed projects in the business plan were in response to feedback from city centre businesses. An extensive feasibility study identified areas of concern and highlighted what businesses felt was needed to improve
What have neigbouring BIDs delivered?
Is the BID a closed shop or are individuals/organisations encouraged to come forward with ideas and suggestions? It’s definitely not a closed shop. The BID would welcome proposals from anyone, providing they meet the objectives of the business plan. There are some fantastic examples of collaborations involving BIDs across the country. Any levy payers will of course have the opportunity to influence how the BID money is spent. Is the BID accountable for its success/failure and if so how? Yes, absolutely so. When the BID goes to ballot this August, businesses are voting on the strength of the proposals set out in the five-year business plan. If the BID is given a Yes vote then it is accountable to that business plan. Ultimately the BID will be judged when it comes to its renewal ballot in 2023, similarly to an elected government or council. Furthermore, the BID team will be under the scrutiny of the BID board, who will be making sure it is delivering what it has set out to do. www.bradfordbid.com
There are over 300 established BIDs in the UK and while budgets vary depending on their demise line and levy rates, it is worth looking at some of the projects these BIDs have delivered.

the city centre. A development board, made up of business representatives used this feedback along with case studies from other successful BIDs to create what we feel is an ambitious and achievable business plan. If the BID vote is successful, then a small team will be put in place to run the BID. It will be their job to deliver the aims set out in the business plan, under the watchful eye of the BID board!

Bread and Roses - a new cafe and workspace opening on North Parade A group of Bradford-based people and organisations have come together under the same roof and are transforming the former Forks Cafe on North Parade into Bread and Roses - a co-operative cafe, pop up restaurant venue and home for creativity and co-working. The aim of the building is to encourage positive change in Bradford through creating a place for people to meet and collaborate. Inspired by Rose Schneiderman’s 1912 feminist speech the name Bread and Roses describes how, in addition to the necessities for living, people need opportunities to flourish too. The venue offers opportunities for people to meet, socialise and share ideas, with a variety of community focused activities and uses. Opening on 1 August, the cafe hopes to create a welcoming environment that is rooted in the community. With a focus on local produce and a fresh, varied, and vibrant menu, the cafe will bring something new to North Parade. A cafe is a welcome addition to the already vibrant feel of North Parade, along with a range of unique midweek food pop-ups, events and weekend restaurant takeovers. Bread and Roses cafe manager and local food business owner Sonia Sandhu said, “It’s really exciting to bring an interesting food offer to North Parade; nutritious and seasonal breakfasts and lunches, great coffee and cakes, a twice weekly youth cafe lead by Speakers Corner, and evening and weekend bistro nights and supper clubs. We’re confident this will appeal to a diverse range of people, and we hope to be a cafe with a difference.” The group behind Bread and Roses are looking to meet like-minded Bradfordians to collaborate on new events that incorporate food and make use of all the building has to

Assembly Bradford relocates to stunning new premises at 20 North Parade Assembly Bradford, a prototype coworking space launched in 2016 as a place to “make things and meet people” has expanded and relocated to an inspirational listed building upon North Parade. Offering flexible desk hire for freelancers, homeworkers and microbusiness within a grand vaulted commercial chamber built in 1907, Assembly’s growing membership now has access to a super-fast dedicated fibre broadband line, affordable colour laser printing, a snug, members’ lounge and kitchen-dining room. A stone’s throw from some of Bradford’s best bars, the development, run by local businessmen Haigh Simpson and David Craig, will be based in the former Liverpool and Victoria chambers. As well as coworking, Assembly’s relocation has enabled the team to offer three serviced offices and “The Assembly Hall” can be transformed into an event space for up to 60 people during evenings and weekends. Director David Craig said “We are really excited about expanding our offer: our new space, with high ceilings, bags of natural light and better facilities will give us more capacity, more flexibility and most importantly, the opportunity to provide space for our members to grow with us. We are delighted that our long-term pop-up has
become permanent, and are really looking forward to watching our members flourish with us” Attracting small businesses and individuals with a wide range of skills, from researchers, fundraisers and copywriters, to photographers, 3D visualisers and designers, members are currently traveling from the likes of York, Skipton, Leeds and Hebden Bridge to come and work in Bradford. The project is being supported by a start-up loan from the BEF-Fund and supported by Bradford Council’s Growth Zone Funding. The grant was offered to encourage projects that provide varied and day time uses within the city centre. Director Haigh Simpson said “The space is fantastic and are delighted that we have already attracted several new members. We do however have plenty more capacity and invite anyone interested in working from our space to book a free trail day” You can get in touch with the Assembly team by ringing the buzzer at 20 North Parade BD1 3HT or calling 07429 542234

A record number of cars will be present from the earliest days of motoring up to the year 2000. The majority of cars will be located in City Park with an extra line up at the Light Cinema on Broadway. A collection of historic race and rally cars will be located in The Broadway Shopping Centre, starring the first Mini Cooper to win an international event, in 1964. The car has been loaned by Barrie Whizzo Williams who drove it to that first international win. Barrie drove in 700 races and 250 rallies in a career that ran from 1957 to 2018 when he announced his retirement from competitive motorsport. Three films will be shown at the new Light Cinema in Broadway, Williams, Ferrari; Race To Immortality and Cars 3. As part of the City
of Film family film festival, a 50th anniversary showing of Love Bug will screened in City Park. This will probably be your only opportunity to see these films on the big screen and, with the high quality sound system at The Light, the Ferrari film in particular will be a audio sensation. In City Park there will be a Bradford Made Market with an emphasis on vintage, automotive and craft products. Also in City Park will be the ACE Grand Prix where budding racers (under six) can race to victory using pedal power. Just off Centenary Square at the Sunbridge Wells shopping centre there will be a pop up gallery of rare Jowett pictures. The exhibition features pictures of the factory, popular Jowett models and race and rally cars. For further details visit www.thebradfordclassic.com

Bradford Bubble Up 7 - 9 September, Various locations, Bradford Bradford is about to fizz over with joy during the Bradford Bubble Up, a waterthemed weekend party curated by arts organisation The Brick Box. As the Great Exhibition of the North draws to a close in Newcastle Gateshead, Bradford will have a celebration all of our own to mark the hidden currents of water and creativity that flow beneath the surface of our streets. The city’s moniker comes from our Saxon name Broad Ford, after the river crossing we were built on. Bradford’s fortunes have always been influenced by water, whether washing wool in the 19th century, or building the UK’s largest urban water feature - the Mirror Pool - in the 21st. Water continues to shape our city, and we want the Bradford Bubble Up to be the next phase of our evolution. Bradford will be animated with H2O-related art and activities in an unprecedented collaborative effort between all of Bradford’s National Portfolio arts organisations, as well as Bradford Council, the Arts Council, Artichoke, West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Friends of Bradford Beck, East Street Arts, and the National Science and Media Museum. So if you’ve ever looked at Darley Street and thought ‘wouldn’t it be great to have a massive water slide all the way down that’,
then your dreams are about to come true. Likewise if you’ve ever wanted to play in the sand at the bottom of Sunbridge Road, have a big dance-off in the Mirror Pool, or listen to Bradford Beck as it runs underneath the city. Empty and underused spaces will be animated with installations and activities, you’ll be able to take part in workshops, follow arts trails, and visit exhibitions. The massive weekender will be launched on Friday 7 September at the National Science and Media Museum, and will continue through the day on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September. Ivegate, Darley Street, the Mirror Pool, the square on Sunbridge Road, the subway between the Science and Media Museum, and the path of Bradford Beck will all be brought to live by local artists as well as national partners. Over £160,000 has been raised for this weekend special, most of which is from outside the city. The result will be a weekend showcase that highlights the city’s talent, as well as our spaces, allowing us to play all over the city centre in every nook and cranny, and discover a new way to enjoy Bradford. Find out more about the Bradford Bubble Up by visiting www.bradfordbubbleup.com

AA Dhand: noir meets family in Bradford, the city of big ideas By James Collingwood
Writer AA Dhand has just published his third crime novel featuring the detective Harry Virdee. City of Sinners along with his previous two books Streets of Darkness and Girl Zero feature detective Harry and his family and the streets of this city. The books are brilliantly written page turners that also explore Harry’s family and his mixed religion marriage to his Muslim wife Saima.
Hi Amit. City of Sinners has just been published. It must have been a busy week for you. It was a busy launch at Waterstones last Friday I must say. People were queuing round the building which was quite exciting. It’s also been an exciting Bradford Festival this year. It just gets busier and busier every year. It’s good for the city It’s also really good to be part of and working at the Literature Festival. With City of Sinners I get the impression the Bradford locations are important. And there’s also a scene in Saltaire. City of Sinners starts off with the killer sitting in City Park by the fountains. The opening chapter starts with the dead body of an Asian girl who is found hanging about 100ft from the ceiling of Bradford Waterstones. Harry pulls her down lies her on the ground and finds her eyes are stitched shut. Then she does what a dead body should never do – her eyes start twitching. I really like using locations. I use the City Park a lot. This book also uses upper Leeds Road, Barkerend Road and Mumtaz restaurant. I also bring back to life the old Maestro’s nightclub. I went there a lot as a kid and I wanted to bring it back to life in fiction and it was lovely to do that. It’s a bit sad that it’s been allowed to decay the way it has. I’ve got a lot of good memories of that place. With the scenes located in Saltaire when I’m plotting I like to walk looking for locations and if a place is peaceful and tranquil what better place to add a bit of darkness! It’s about getting the best location for what’s about to happen. Waterstones is the most beautiful bookshop in the world but if you’ve got a body hanging from the ceiling it adds to impending doom (Waterstones staff loved that scene by the way).
Without giving away spoilers Harry’s family is obviously important throughout the book. The relationship with Harry and Saima and their family and in laws (particularly Harry’s father) is a major theme? I’ve always got two or three things going on in the book, so it never gets stagnant. Speaking a bit about Bradford we’ve got a large Asian community and within the community we have discrimination. Putting a light to Saima, well, she’s just a really nice Yorkshire girl. She’s just trying to win the battle of hearts and minds. I feel in life your perception of people and the reality are two different things. Especially in the times we live in now with identity, with Brexit and the far right. These types of stories are normally written in nonfiction, which I find quite depressing. Saima is never going to quit. Harry and Saima have that in common. The family story was just a story that hasn’t been explored in fiction before. It’s an attempt to break down stereotypes and clichés with the type of character Saima is. With a Muslim woman it’s normally very nuanced in the way they are viewed. I wanted to break stereotypes. Most Muslim woman I know are just cool Yorkshire women! The other thing is, Harry can be dark and edgy away from the home but whilst at home he pulls it back with Saima and his son Aaron. It creates balance in the piece rather than have the characters as too one dimensional. And without spoilers again things are kept open at the end. There’s going to be other books? I’m planning to do one book a year. I have the next one in my head. It’s not the end of Harry and I enjoyed introducing a few new characters which could develop.
I’ve left little cracks in the foundations which may all have a part to play. It’s for readers to say really but I think this is the most visual book that I’ve written - with one eye on future TV adaptation. We are in development with the BBC to do Streets of Darkness which is a really long process. Streets of Darkness came out in 2016 and Harry Virdee is still the only Asian lead in a reoccurring series. This is tragic. We need to get more diverse voices but diverse voices that cross barriers. Harry Virdee crosses every single barrier. Most of the feedback I get is that he is just Harry striving to be good. Asian writers that I read, they can write very Asian books. I hate that. I want to appeal to a broad spectrum of readers because that’s the world I live in. Every day I meet people of three different colours, four different nationalities and five different religions. Harry bounces off very different people in the book – a people-centric structure is very important. People are very different but generally we all want to get along with each other and I think it’s very important to show that. Whilst showing people like Harry’s dad who is on the opposite side of the fence. With the development of the TV adaption we’re trying to get the right balance of action and reality at the moment.
Can you see Bradford noir happening as a genre in the same vein as Scottish Noir etc? Bradford Literature Festival is running a competition sponsored by Mayfair Group Investments looking for some Northern Noir crime writers. We’ve had sold out crime events at the Festival. They’re all geared to the competition which is now open, and which is to submit 5000 words. 10 to 15 writers will be mentored and taken on an Arvon course with a possible contract with my agent at the end . It’s always surprised me that there’s never been many Bradford crime writers in the past. The city seems ideal for it. I like writing big bombastic thrillers with Bradford as a canvas. I always wanted something huge though in terms of the plot. Start with something huge and break it down. The most important thing for me is also to try and be ahead of the reader all the time. When the reader gets ahead of you that’s when you start to lose it as an author! Bradford needs big plots and big ideas. City of Sinners is published by Bantam Press

Director: Ol Parker A decade after Mamma Mia! The Movie, we’re heading back to the Greek island of Kalokairi for another joyful and infectious musical based on the songs of ABBA. Ten years on from the events of the first movie, Sophie (Seyfried) is pregnant and wants to learn more about her mother’s past. The film begins to flit between past and present as Sophie learns the trials Donna (Streep) went through before she was born, and how those experiences could solve her own worries. Lily James (Baby Driver, Darkest Hour) joins the fun under the sun to play Donna’s younger self, while Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner and Josh Dylan feature as young Sam, Harry and Bill respectively.

Polterheist director David Gilbank: ‘Bradford has everything’ by James Collingwood
Polterheist is an exciting new comedy horror film shot mainly in Bradford and released in the next few months. The original 20-minute film won best short film at Bradford’s Drunken Film Festival and the 90-minute feature was nominated for Best Feature Film in the British Independent Film Festival. It’s about gangsters who kidnap a psychic. I spoke to co-writer and director David Gilbank about Polterheist.
Hi Dave. Can you tell me a bit about the development of Polterheist and how you made the film? Well, it started life as a small film. The 90-minute feature was filmed in 2016 and that was based on a screenplay that both myself and my writing partner Paul Renhard wrote in about 2011. A short film screenplay. It was meant to be a quite high concept kind of idea and we were going to film it, but we realised we just didn’t have the actors to do it. A few years later we set up our own business Tadah Media and we came across a group of really good actors and we thought - you know what, let’s just give it a go. We got them in to do a bit of workshopping and it worked. It was just a matter of getting a camera and crew and filming the script. The finished short film did really well on the film festival circuit all over the world and off the back of that we got a bit of interest off some private investors. Some of our friends and associates put in some money and we started filming the feature. The original film won a lot of awards didn’t it? It’s won over 30 awards so far. We’re proud of it. Essentially, we wanted to make a short film as a shop window to lead to a feature. It served its purpose Was it always planned to film in Bradford? Was the original short film filmed in the Bradford area? The original short film was shot entirely in Bradford. The feature film was shot I’d say about 80% in Bradford. The rest of it was shot in studios in Keighley where they shot Peaky Blinders, Limehouse
34
Golem and the like. We also used an up and coming set builders in Keighley, staffed with Bradford people, called Norse Sky. They build the set for the seance scene for example. They made a whole lot of contraptions for us from a car park meter to a vomit machine! You’ve got a good group of actors for the film. Sid Akbar Ali and Jo Mousley for example. How did the script develop? Sid is the only carry on from the short film. We got really talented actors to work with us, such as Jamie Cymbal, Sid Akbar Ali, Pushpinder Chani and Jo Mousley. Jo is a well established and well-known stage actor. Pushpinder is excellent in a classic gangster role. An Asian gang leader who enjoys killing people with cricket bats! The original script was written by myself and Paul and we wrote the first draft of the feature. We used a Leeds-based playwright called Gemma Head. She added some real sparkle and really touching moments that give a real heart to the film. Based on that I was able to add a bit more when I directed it. We also cast Gemma in the film as a secondary character important to the plot. Your background is in radio advertising and media I believe? It is yes. I’ve been a journalist and copywriter most of my life, written all types of commercials for TV and radio and done sports journalism covering Rugby league for example. In the last few years I’ve teamed up with Paul Renhard and it’s gone on from there.
Film
Were you always a big film buff? What were the influences on this film? I remember one of the first films I saw was One Million Years BC in Australia when I was a kid. Growing up in the 80s and 90s it was films like Bladerunner and Alien. 70s films as well. The biggest influences on this film were the likes of Get Carter and also the Exorcist and the Omen. Our film is more gangster than horror. It’s a black comedy. What sort of locations did you use in Bradford specifically? We filmed in Saltaire at Salts Mill. We also filmed in Thackley and in and around Lumb Lane and Bowling. The locals would be very interested in what we were doing when we were filming, sometimes doing handbrake slides for the cameras! We also filmed on the roof of the Rio Grande and viewed the Bradford skyline from there! Bradford is the central character really. We had four living central characters, but we had Bradford as well. It has everything you could ever want. More films are made in Bradford now? There’s been a resurgence over the past year with a few bigger budget films. Nothing beats a good screenplay, and nothing beats a good script. Hopefully some sort of film industry will develop in Bradford. Events like the Drunken Film Festival run by Jax Griffin build a great community. People like her put time and effort into trying to build something! Have you yourself got any future projects coming up? We’re filming something in the US at end of year and we’re filming some of that in Bradford We’ve also got an international love story about an Indian cricketer who falls in love with an English girl. And a Heavy Metal comedy which will be set in Bradford as well. We like to mix genres. For us script is king. If people are investing their time we want to make it worthwhile. Also, local themes about human issues can cross universal boundaries

Pie & Priestley 13 September, Napoleons Casino, Bradford Summertime in Bradford is marked by a variety of festivals and events, many many of which include sightings of a foot wide pie, made and carried by local poet and showman Glyn Watkins. Glyn calls the pie his iPie, on account of him baking his web address in the crust, and he brings it out to advertise his annual Pie, Priestley & Proud of Bradford Show, which he’s been doing on 13 September every year for decades. The show celebrates J.B.Priestley’s birthday and a meat and potato pie that defied Hitler. The inspiration for the event came from a wartime broadcast by Priestley about a Bradford meat and potato pie shop that had a massive, steaming pie in the window. Bradford was bombed in September 1940. Nobody was hurt, but Priestley was told the pie shop had been destroyed. Priestley came back to his home town in order to view the damage, and to stand in the ruins of the shop and compose a lament or elegy to the pie, ‘…catching perhaps a last faint lingering whiff of that steam’. To his joy though the shop was still there with the pie steaming away like mad. ‘Every puff and jet of that steam defied Hitler, Goering, and the whole gang of them. It was glorious.’ The fact that Glyn discovered that he shared Priestley’s birthdate helped ensure that Glyn did his Priestley show every year. As he says, “I reckon if people don’t come to my birthday show it’s because they don’t like J.B.Priestley, and not because they can’t stand me!” The show will be at Napoleons Casino, Bolton Road, for the second year running. It features readings and anecdotes by Glyn, with illustrations, a brass band, a two course pie supper, a drink on arrival and a free £5 bet. All for just £12.50. Call Napoleons on 01274 39182.

the later involvement and guiding hand of Mark Guy aka Terminal Productions, aided and abetted by Chris Molyneux (one of the original students), Lee and Richard. Indeed this annual festival has weathered many a storm, battling through poor worldwide financial climates and the threats of other promoters trying their hands at possible rival shows. With only one year of absence (due to the venue requiring much needed refurbishment), it’s a testament to the promoter, staff and fans that this event is still going strong today. www.infestuk.com

Shuttle Shuffle Festival 25-26 August, SORM Studios, Little Germany
“This year’s festival is going to be Bradford’s biggest party’!” said Tim Wilson, festival director. And with thirty plus bands, three stages, music workshops every other hour, samba lessons, an outside area with craft stalls and interactive events, food and a children’s area, this weekend is going to rock. Tattie Lexie and Tony Levy, both local singer songwriters, will be compering the various stages, adding personal humour as the festival proceeds. “What we have found is that artists are wanting to come to Bradford to play the Shuttle Shuffle,” said Tim. “We’re bloody well chuffed to bits to have The Seamonsters playing at this year’s festival. Hailing from Sheffield, and just off the back of playing The Isle Of Wight Festival, the all-girl six-piece will be playing in Bradford for the first time. Having numerous other UK festivals confirmed, such as Tramlines in July, they are excited to spread their indie glitter at Shuttle Shuffle and make some noise,” he said. The line-up for this year’s festival is as
much about emerging talent as it is about established performers. “You’ll see an eclectic mix of talent including an african drum workshop, graffiti artists, a DJ workshop, and performances by young adults with learning disabilities.” “We have Bradford Punk legends The Negatives, the city’s first punk rock group. Formed in the summer of 1978, this hometown gig will be celebrating their 40th year as a band”, said Tim. This year Shuttle Shuffle’s home is SORM Studios, located in Little Germany, Bradford. SORM works in the community, involving young people, as well as adults with learning disabilities, creating real work experience opportunities & social inclusion. The festival offers involvement not only to the musicians and artists performing but also by encouraging everyone who attends to join in. The festival is supporting The White Ribbon Campaign which aims to end male violence against women and create safer music events. www.yorkshireticketshop.co/shuttle-ticket.html £7 day, £12 weekend

North Parade Music & Arts Festival 26 August, North Parade, Bradford The North Parade Street Party started way back in 2014, when various business owners decided to celebrate the ‘Bradfordness’ of the street. Hat throwing competitions, morris dancers and music (amongst other things) made up the first ever event. Fast forward to today, and the fifth annual event looks quite different. Organisers of the event observe the everchanging demographic of North Parade, and look to other cities to see how the event could be further progressed to offer sufficient variety of entertainment, in line with what the modern day festival goer would expect from an inner city event. Taking inspiration from events like Tramlines Fringe & Live At Leeds, the new format event offers a great selection of music, comedy and more. Considering the other musical offerings across the city on the same day - Shuttle Shuffle at SORM Studio, 90’s Takeover at Sunbridge Wells, and unofficial after parties at The Undergound you are literally spoilt for choice! For North Parade Festival, however, gone is the street-dominating stage, and the outdoor bars. Today’s North Parade Festival does not need these things. The new event takes the audience into each venue, with something for everyone across the day, while showcasing the unique
personalities of the independently owned bars. You can head to Wireless, Al’s Dime Bar, and even The Sparrow to get your fix of live music. Peacocks and Rumshackalack will be bringing in comedians to keep you entertained. Plonk have some outstanding old school scratch DJs on their bill. There’s so much on the line up you’ll be busy all day. But, if you find yourself in sensory overload at any point, you can head over to Muddy Puddle or Record Café for a quieter drink, alternatively the newly re-opening Bread & Roses (ex-Forks) invites you in to soak up some art and other activities, with a special food menu. The rest of the street will look similar to previous years, with things for the kids to do, street food traders and handmade wares to purchase. There will be large seating areas throughout the street, in the hopes we can continue to take advantage of the glorious summer we’ve been having. So head on over to North Parade Music & Arts Festival on Sunday 26 August, bring the family, check out some of the events going on inside, sit outside with a beer or a cocktail from our many bars, enjoy the various food options – enjoy the Bradfordness.
