THE ROLE Would you like to build on our strong foundations and help us produce inspiring and entertaining theatre by supporting our Drama team with technical expertise. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, creative, multi-skilled individual to join Fettes as Theatre Technician.


This varied and fast-paced role requires an enthusiastic individual with superb technical theatre skills, excellent time management, a collaborative and pro-active approach and creative flair. The role combines technical capabilities in, lighting, sound and video with regular involvement in the curricular and co-curricular provision of Drama for Fettes students. Working directly with the Heads of Academic and Co-Curricular Drama, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to make their mark and strengthen this area of a successful department. Key Responsibilities Technical Theatre and Audio-Visual Support • Provide design, creative input and technical assistance for all drama and musical productions, including academic practical exams and coursework, competitions and in-house large-scale events. • Assume responsibility for overseeing the use of stage equipment and the storage spaces in the department, as well as managing the day-to-day operations and amending risk assessments, policies and safe operating procedures. • Organise the stage, lighting, sound, scenic and AV equipment in the Drama Department. • Assume responsibility for designing and operating lighting, sound, audio visual, set and props. • Assume responsibility for event setups and support during presentations, assemblies and events, both live and online, providing on hand technical support where needed. • Assist with and encourage set design and construction where required. • Lead the maintenance of the performance spaces (including backstage, wardrobes, props cupboard, storage rooms, lighting/sound boxes and offices/storerooms). • Assume responsibility for the careful storage and maintenance of equipment: general maintenance work within the relevant departments, including minor repairs, and planning for repairs and servicing of all equipment. • Lead the development of technical equipment with acquisition of up-to-date sound and lighting software. • Establish, develop and catalogue any necessary video recordings and/or live streaming of departmental, co-curricular and whole school activities. Working with Students • Support the work of the Academic and Co-Curricular Drama department in providing technical expertise for theatrical work with students.


• Work closely with colleagues and students to help develop creative ideas into practical realities. • Lead a technical theatre club and train students in lighting, sound and design; establish and build student technical teams to assist in designing, rigging, angling and focusing all in-house performances. • Assist and supervise both staff and students in the use of performing arts equipment, including computer-based software for teaching purposes. Additional Responsibilities • Work closely and collaboratively with the Academic and Co-Curricular Drama Departments, including weekly meetings and support when needed. • Play an active and involved role within Drama, which will often include out of hours or weekend involvement in events and include other reasonable duties that may be required. PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience • Experience in technical theatre work, both lighting and sound, is vital. • An excellent working knowledge of all areas of technical theatre is essential. • Experience in and a willingness to work with children and young people is required. • IT literate across a broad range of Microsoft applications. • Experience in film and video work is highly desirable. Personal Qualities • Self-motivated to take the initiative to manage tasks independently. • Ability to work independently and to apply oneself to all manner of challenges • Excellent organisational and planning skills. • Excellent inter-personal skills. • Enthusiastic and approachable. BENEFITS This is a 6 days per week, term time only position (34 weeks) working, giving 18 weeks free to pursue other opportunities. The salary is anticipated to be around £25K, dependent on the successful candidate. In addition to being part of a great team you will be entitled to a range of benefits that include:

ABOUT FETTES Fettes College is a leading HMC co-educational boarding and day school close to the heart of Edinburgh. It has a strong tradition of academic, sporting and cultural excellence underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. Fettes opened its doors in 1870 and became fully co-educational in 1980: it is now an independent school of some 800 students. There are 598 students in the Senior School (13-18 years) and 202 students in the Preparatory School (7-13 years). The academic staff in the College consists of the Head and 91 full-time members of the Common Room. Our Prep School shares the same site and consists of a further 29 full-time teaching staff. The school stands on a magnificent site of approximately 100 acres, but still within walking distance of Edinburgh’s city centre. The historic main building holds the Chapel, Library, the English, Classics and History Departments as well as the Medical Centre and two boarding houses. A large newly built teaching block (the Spens Building) houses Art, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, and Music. The Theatre, Science Laboratories and Dining Hall are adjacent. The Preparatory School and seven further boarding houses (including a purpose-built U6th House) are also on the campus. Our sports facilities (including extensive playing fields, two all-weather pitches and a private Health Club) are excellent. As well as our teaching staff we employ over 220 Non-Teaching Staff across the many departments, including Estates, Security, Housekeeping, Finance, Human Resources, Admissions and Marketing with a pervading sense of community amongst staff, students and parents alike.
