Quem disse que a engenharia era só para rapazes?

nês Castro Teiga, Cláudia Ribeiro (Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrotécnica e Computadores), Diana Freitas e Ana Inês Barros (Mestrado em Engenharia Informática e Computação), estudantes da FEUP, foram distinguidas com Bolsas de Mérito da E-Redes. Além de um programa de mentoring de sete meses, a bolsa inclui um prémio de 2 mil euros.

A iniciativa insere-se no âmbito do programa E-REDES Top Women Scholarship, programa lançado em maio de 2021, com o objetivo de promover a igualdade de oportunidades entre homens e mulheres no acesso a carreiras profissionais em áreas de engenharia. Em simultâneo, procura-se atrair para o quadro da E-REDES mais jo-

vens mulheres, garantindo maior diversidade de género e recursos qualificados na promoção de transição energética.

Às quatro estudantes da FEUP premiadas juntaram-se também 12 jovens talentos das áreas de engenharia eletrotécnica e de informática provenientes de quatro universidades de norte a sul do país: Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra, Departamento de Eletrónica, Telecomunicações e Informática da Universidade de Aveiro e Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho.

As 15 finalistas marcaram presença em Lisboa, em dezembro, para a sessão de entrega de prémios.

Who said engineering was only for boys?

nês Castro Teiga, Cláudia Ribeiro (Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering), Diana Freitas and Ana Inês Barros (Master in Computer Engineering), students of FEUP, were distinguished with E-Redes Merit Scholarships. Besides a 7-month mentoring program, the scholarship includes a 2-thousand-euro prize.

The initiative is part of the E-REDES Top Women Scholarship program, launched in May 2021, with the goal of promoting equal opportunities between men and women in the access to professional careers in engineering. At the same time, it seeks to attract more young women to the E-REDES framework,

ensuring greater gender diversity and qualified resources in promoting energy transition.

The four awarded FEUP’ students are also joined by twelve young talents of electrotechnical engineering and computer science areas from four other Universities from north to south of the country: NOVA School of Science and Technology, Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of the University of Aveiro and School of Engineering of the University of Minho.

Quando a saúde mental se transforma em poesia

Gods of Anxiety Be Damned” é uma chamada de atenção com palavras que nos prendem ao seu propósito: o de alertar para a importância da saúde mental. Em forma de poesia, Hiten Chojer, estudante do Programa Doutoral em Engenharia do Ambiente da FEUP, decidiu pôr em papel o que a sua mente batalhava em querer lidar sozinha, deixando o enredo dos seus pensamentos permeável à entrada de quem o lê.

“Relata um testemunho muito pessoal de ansiedade, do que a desencadeia, dos acontecimentos trágicos que testemunhei e de determinadas observações sobre a sociedade. É também um espaço para a autoconsciencialização, aceitação e amor”, clarifica o autor, originário de Punjab, uma região no noroeste da Índia.

A obra pode ser interpretada como a catarse do autor ou como um ombro amigo para quem se identifica com o peso das emoções avassaladoras que o frenesim do dia a dia traz.

Hiten, que apenas se mudou do continente asiático para a Europa em 2015 e que sempre gostou de escrever, assume: “Não quis reter os meus pensamentos esmagadores de medo, perda e ansiedade só para mim, pelo que espero que esta partilha consiga chegar e relacionar-se com o maior número de pessoas possível”.

A par da escrita, o interesse pelas ciências permitiu-lhe prosseguir estudos na área da engenharia, com especialização em Engenharia do Ambiente. Em Portugal desde 2019, depois de uma passagem pela Alemanha

onde completou o Mestrado em Engenharia de Sistemas de Processo na Universidade Técnica de Dortmund, o estudante da FEUP está ainda ligado ao Departamento de Engenharia Química, mais concretamente ao LEPABE, onde se dedica à investigação na área da poluição do ar interior.

“Estou a trabalhar em sensores de baixo custo para monitorização da qualidade do ar, especialmente em ambientes interiores, como escolas. Lido com um dos aspetos mais desafiantes destes sensores: a sua baixa fiabilidade de dados”, acrescenta.

Não prevê sair de Portugal tão cedo, por ser um país que lhe transmite calma e serenidade. “Gosto muito de fazer caminhadas relaxantes junto ao mar, no Porto ou em Matosinhos. Cá, nem os dias de chuva são muito frios e fazem-me lembrar as monções da Índia”, recorda o estudante, com nostalgia.

É aqui que quer “continuar a crescer pessoal e profissionalmente”, contando diariamente com o apoio e companheirismo de “colegas e supervisores fantásticos”. Com uma bolsa de investigação assegurada a longo-prazo, Hiten tem a determinação certa. “É na FEUP que vejo o meu futuro, numa área de investigação entusiasmante e com muito potencial.”

When mental health becomes poetry

Gods of Anxiety Be Damned” is a call for attention with words that hold us to its purpose: to alert to the importance of mental health. In the form of poetry, Hiten Chojer, a student of the PhD Program in Environmental Engineering at FEUP, decided to put on paper what his mind insisted in dealing alone, leaving the plot of his thoughts permeable to those who read it.

“It addresses a very personal experience of anxiety, what triggers it, the tragic events I have witnessed and certain observations about society. It is also a space for self-awareness, acceptance and love,” clarifies the author, originally from Punjab, a region in northwest India.

The work can be interpreted as the author’s catharsis or as a friendly shoulder for those who identify with the weight of overwhelming emotions that the frenzy of everyday life brings.

Hiten, who only moved from the Asian continent to Europe in 2015 and has always enjoyed writing, assumes, “I didn’t want to keep my overwhelming thoughts of fear, loss, and anxiety to myself, so I hope this sharing can reach and relate to as many people as possible.”

Alongside writing, his interest in sciences allowed him to pursue studies in engineering, specialising in Environmental Engineering. Living in Portugal since 2019, after spending some time in Germany where

he completed his Master in Process Systems Engineering at the Technical University of Dortmund, the FEUP student is still connected to the Department of Chemical Engineering, more specifically to LEPABE, where he is dedicated to research in the field of indoor air pollution.

“I am working on low-cost sensors for monitoring air quality, especially in indoor environments, such as schools. I deal with one of the most challenging aspects of these sensors: their low data reliability,” he adds.

He doesn’t plan on leaving Portugal any time soon, as it is a country that transmits calm and serenity to him. “I really enjoy going for relaxing walks by the sea, in Porto or in Matosinhos. Here, even the rainy days aren’t very cold and remind me of the monsoons in India,” recalls the student nostalgically.

This is where he wants to “continue to grow personally and professionally,” relying daily on the support and companionship of “fantastic colleagues and supervisors”. With a long-term research grant secured, Hiten has the right determination. “FEUP is where I see my future, in an exciting research area with a lot of potential.”

EFaculdade de Engenharia abriu as portas a cerca de 1500 alunos do 11.º e 12.º anos do ensino secundário, em mais uma edição da “Semana Profissão:Engenheiro” (SPE). O objetivo passou por despertar a curiosidade dos futuros estudantes para a área da engenharia.

O trajeto de São Miguel, nos Açores, até ao campus da Faculdade de Engenharia foi o mais longo que um aluno do ensino secundário fez para chegar à edição de 2023 da SPE. Fomos procurar saber as expectativas de quem nos visitou e que planos têm para o futuro.

he Faculty of Engineering opened its doors to about 1500 students in the 11th and 12th grades of secondary school, in another demonstration of engineering areas through activities and challenges. Sparking curiosity of future students and answer questions related to the areas of study is the main objective of the annual “Semana:Profissão Engenheiro” (SPE), helping at the time of choosing the future career.

The journey from São Miguel, Azores, to the Faculty of Engineering’s campus was the longest that a secondary school student made to get to the 2023 edition of the SPE. We went to find out the expectations of those who visited us and what plans they have for the future.

. Como surgiu o interesse pela engenharia?

Sempre gostei de matemática e de físico-química, por isso tenho algum interesse em engenharias.

. Que curso tens em mente?

Estou indeciso entre engenharia industrial ou gestão, ligado às matemáticas também.

O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Algo ligado a uma empresa ou fábrica, na parte da gestão da produção, num contexto internacional. Trabalhar lá fora não seria um problema para mim, mas preferia trabalhar com empresas internacionais a partir de cá.

. Como chegaste até à FEUP?

Uma professora minha indicou-me a SPE da FEUP para podermos conhecer o campus, tirar todas as dúvidas existentes e decidir o nosso futuro de forma mais informada.

O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

É uma escola grande e harmoniosa com muito espaço para conviver. As zonas de trabalho e investigação parecem-me muito boas, com boas máquinas. Tem tudo para ser uma ótima faculdade!

. Como foram as experiências aqui na SPE?

Estivemos agora em engenharia industrial e explicaram-nos tudo direitinho - as médias, as saídas profissionais - para nos elucidar sobre os processos. Disseram-nos que na área da engenharia industrial temos 100% de empregabilidade e isso é muito bom.

How did you become interested in engineering?

I have always liked mathematics, physics and chemistry, so I have some interest in engineering.

Which degree do you have in mind?

I’m undecided between industrial engineering or management, connected to mathematics as well.

. What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

Something connected to a company or factory, in the production management part, in an international context. Working abroad would not be a problem for me, but I would prefer to work with international companies from here.

How did you get to FEUP?

A teacher of mine referred me to the FEUP’s SPE so that we could get to know the campus, clear all existing doubts, and decide our future in a more informed way.

. What do you think about FEUP so far?

It is a big and peaceful school with lots of space to hang out. The work and research areas seem very good to me, with good machines. It has everything to be a great faculty!

How were the experiences here at SPE?

We were just now in industrial engineering and they explained everything to us really well - the averages, the career paths - to enlighten us about the processes. They told us that in industrial engineering we have 100% employability and that is very good.

. Como surgiu o interesse pela engenharia?

Gostava muito de poder conciliar a engenharia com o desporto e por isso estou focado na área da engenharia biomédica.

. Que curso tens em mente?

Bioengenharia. Pelo que percebi aqui na SPE, o curso na FEUP é muito mais abrangente em termos de área de estudo. E isso é interessante.

O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Gostava de estar ligado à criação das próteses ou à restauração de equipamentos médicos em hospitais.

. Como chegaste até à FEUP?

Um dos meus professores recomendou-nos esta semana aqui na FEUP para ficarmos a conhecer a oferta formativa.

. O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

O espaço é muito agradável, já vi que tem vários blocos e é complexo.

Como foram as experiências aqui na SPE?

Estou a adorar esta experiência porque me permite ter uma visão mais clara sobre o meu futuro.

. How did you become interested in engineering?

I would love to be able to combine engineering with sports, so I am focused on the field of biomedical engineering. Which degree do you have in mind?

Bioengineering. From what I realized here at SPE, the course at FEUP is much more comprehensive in terms of area of study. And that is interesting.

. What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

I would like to be involved in the creation of prostheses or the restoration of medical equipment in hospitals.

How did you get to FEUP?

One of my teachers recommended us this activity here at FEUP to get to know the educational offer.

What do you think about FEUP so far?

The space is very nice, I have seen that it has several blocks and it is complex.

. How were the experiences here at SPE?

I am loving this experience because it allows me to have a clearer vision about my future.

. Como surgiu o interesse pela engenharia?

Eu acho piada a engenharia, mas ainda não sei o que quero seguir por isso vim cá para saber mais e reunir mais informações.

. Que curso tens em mente?

Estou indecisa entre as áreas de Biologia, Engenharia Civil e Engenharia Mecânica.

O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Na verdade, o que eu quero fazer no futuro é ajudar pessoas. Ainda não tenho certezas de como vou fazer isso, mas sinto que a SPE me está a ajudar a esclarecer muitas perguntas que tenho na minha cabeça.

Sempre ouvi falar da FEUP como referência nacional na área da engenharia.

. O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

Eu gostava de vir para a FEUP. É das mais faladas e melhores escolas de engenharia, por isso teria todo o interesse em estudar cá. Como foram as experiências aqui na SPE?

Estivemos a ver como se fazia a penicilina, já fomos visitar um laboratório de Química... Está a ser muito interessante e diversificado.

. How did you become interested in engineering?

I find engineering funny, but I still don’t know what I want to pursue so I came here to find out more and gather more information. Which degree do you have in mind?

I am undecided between Biology, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

Actually, what I want to do in the future is to help people. I’m not sure yet how I’m going to do that, but I feel that SPE is helping me to clear up a lot of questions that I have in my head.

. How did you get to FEUP?

I have always heard about FEUP as a national reference in the engineering area.

What do you think about FEUP so far?

I would like to come to FEUP. It is one of the most talked about and best engineering schools, so I would be glad to be studying here.

How were the experiences here at SPE?

We’ve seen how penicillin is made, we’ve visited a chemistry lab... It’s been very interesting and diverse.

. Como surgiu o interesse pela engenharia?

Sempre tive interesse em engenharia porque é algo que pode ter bastante física, matemática e biologia, áreas que gosto desde criança.

Que curso tens em mente?

Definitivamente Engenharia Química.

. O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Sempre gostei da área de laboratório. Na escola, queria sempre estar no laboratório por isso só consigo imaginar o meu futuro a seguir investigação na área da química.

. Como chegaste até à FEUP?

Eu e as minhas colegas de escola sempre sonhamos em seguir para uma universidade em conjunto. Quisemos saber mais sobre a FEUP e fomos procurar.

O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

A FEUP é uma escola de engenharia com muito potencial, por isso estamos muito interessadas em vir para cá.

Têm sido experiências muito interessantes e engraçadas. Gostei imenso das atividades até agora.

. How did you become interested in engineering?

I’ve always been interested in engineering because it’s something that can have a lot of physics, math and biology, areas I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. Which degree do you have in mind?

Definitely Chemical Engineering.

What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

I have always liked the laboratory area. In school, I always wanted to be in the lab, so I can only imagine my future following research in chemistry.

. How did you get to FEUP?

My schoolmates and I always dreamed of going to a university together. We wanted to know more about FEUP and we went looking for it.

What do you think about FEUP so far?

FEUP is an engineering school with a lot of potential, so we are very interested in coming to here.

How have the experiences been here at SPE?

They have been very interesting and fun experiences. I really enjoyed the activities so far.

Como surgiu o interesse pela engenharia?

O meu pai trabalha na área da Engenharia Civil e, apesar de não ser engenheiro, acabou por me conectar e despertar o interesse para esta temática. Cresci a ouvir muitos debates de engenharia entre o meu pai e os colegas. Acabei por estar ligado a esta área desde muito cedo e gosto muito. Com o crescimento, fui descobrindo mais aspetos que gosto na engenharia. Que curso tens em mente?

Engenharia Civil é a minha única opção.

O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Para já, estudar na FEUP é o meu próximo objetivo para conseguir alcançar o sonho de ser Engenheiro Civil.

. Como chegaste até à FEUP?

Foi uma professora minha que me recomendou a FEUP e, depois de alguma pesquisa, cheguei à SPE e às informações sobre a faculdade.

. O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

Isto é tudo novo para mim. A universidade é muito grande, os professores são muito simpáticos e respeitosos e parece-me ser uma escola muito boa.

. Como foram as experiências aqui na SPE?

Ainda não consegui conhecer todo o Departamento de Engenharia Civil, mas adorei tudo o que vi até agora.

How did you become interested in engineering?

My father works in the field of Civil Engineering, and although he is not an engineer, he ended up sparking my interest in this subject. I grew up listening to a lot of engineering discussions between my father and his colleagues. I ended up being connected to this area from a very early age and I really enjoy it. As I grew up, I discovered more aspects that I like about engineering.

. Which degree do you have in mind?

Civil Engineering is my only option.

What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

For now, studying at FEUP is my next goal to achieve my dream of being a Civil Engineer.

How did you get to FEUP?

A teacher of mine recommended FEUP to me, and after some research I discovered SPE and information about the faculty.

. What do you think about FEUP so far?

This is all new to me. The university is very large, the professors are very friendly and respectful, and it seems to me to be a very good school.

How were the experiences here at SPE?

I haven’t gotten to know the whole Civil Engineering Department yet, but I loved everything I’ve seen so far.

Desde sempre que gostei de matemática e de físico-química. Desde pequeno que sei que o meu futuro vai passar pela Engenharia.

Computação, Programação, Robótica. Algo que abranja estas áreas de estudo.

O que te imaginas a fazer no futuro?

Imagino-me a trabalhar como programador para uma empresa.

. Como chegaste até à FEUP?

A minha irmã já estuda cá na FEUP e ela é a minha grande referência neste aspeto.

. O que estás a achar da FEUP até agora?

O campus é muito maior do que aquilo que eu imaginava. É muito agradável e os espaços parecem estar muito bem tratados. Gostava muito de estudar aqui.

Como foram as experiências aqui na SPE?

Estou a gostar muito da experiência. Fui à atividade de gráficos e jogos e adorei. Os organizadores eram muito bons, explicaram muito bem a dinâmica.

. How did you become interested in engineering?

I have always liked mathematics, physics and chemistry. Since I was a little boy, I knew that my future would be in engineering. Which degree do you have in mind?

Computer Science, Programming, Robotics. Something that covers these areas of study.

What do you imagine yourself doing in the future?

I imagine myself working as a programmer for a company. How did you get to FEUP?

My sister is already studying here at FEUP and she is my big reference in this aspect.

. What do you think of FEUP so far?

The campus is much bigger than I imagined. It is very nice and the spaces seem to be very well taken care of. I would really like to study here.

How were the experiences here at SPE?

I am really enjoying the experience. I went to the graphics and games activity and I loved it. The organizers were very good, they explained the dynamics very well.

INCENTIVAR O TALENTO NA ENGENHARIA ENCOURAGING ENGINEERING TALENT

Com o objetivo de reforçar a ligação com as escolas secundárias que mais impacto geram na Faculdade de Engenharia – quer pelo número de alunos colocados, como também pela qualidade dos graduados que acabam o seu percurso académico no prazo de cinco anos – acaba de ser lançada a rede CAMPUS FEUP. Inserida no âmbito do programa de ligação às escolas secundárias “Profissão:Engenheiro”, a rede foi apresentada no dia 18 de maio, na presença de 15 das escolas do universo das 17 responsáveis por cerca de 25% dos ingressos em cursos de 1º ciclo da FEUP entre os anos letivos de 2013/14 e 2017/18.

O que se pretende é enfatizar as relações com estas escolas enquanto incubadoras de talento num prolongamento do campus da FEUP no Polo Universitário da Asprela, mobilizando as respetivas comunidades numa parceria estratégica ancorada na missão de formar mais e melhores engenheiro(a)s.

“Espera-se que a rede CAMPUS FEUP se materialize em relações mais próximas com estas Escolas, em visitas regulares de docentes e alunos, e em ações pedagógicas com vista à melhoria do desempenho escolar. Pretende-se também desenvolver acordos de cooperação com algumas destas Escolas, em projetos de interesse comum”, assegura Sara Cristóvão, responsável na Faculdade de Engenharia pelas atividades de ligação às escolas secundárias.

Aiming to strengthen the connection with the secondary schools that generate more impact on the Faculty of Engineering - both by the number of students placed, as well as by the quality of graduates who finish their academic career within five yearsthe CAMPUS FEUP network has just been launched. Inserted in the scope of the program of connection to secondary schools "Profissão:Engenheiro", the network was presented on May 18, in the presence of 15 of the schools of the universe of 17 responsible for about 25% of the entrances in 1st cycle courses of FEUP between the academic years 2013/14 and 2017/18.

The intention is to emphasise the relations with these schools as incubators of talent in an extension of the FEUP campus in the Asprela University Campus, mobilizing the respective communities in a strategic partnership anchored in the mission to train more and better engineers.

"It is expected that the FEUP CAMPUS network will materialise in closer relations with these schools, in regular visits of teachers and students, and in pedagogical actions to improve school performance. It is also intended to develop cooperation agreements with some of these schools, in projects of common interest", assures Sara Cristóvão, responsible in the Faculty of Engineering for the connection activities with secondary schools.

e are JuniFEUP, the FEUP’s Junior Enterprise, founded in 2001. But, after all, what is a Junior Enterprise?

It is a non-profit company, with the particularity that it is formed only by university students. The Junior Movement was born in France, in 1967, and currently has over 1700 Junior Enterprises globally.

This year, JuniFEUP stood out among the 24 Portuguese Junior Enterprises and was nominated as a finalist for Junior Enterprise of the Year, which aims to reward the path of excellence, developed work and external impact, being an example to be followed.

JuniFEUP provides services in three core businesses: IT Solutions, Consulting and Product Development. MAKE PROGRESS IN THE TREATMENT OF INJURIES?

m grupo de investigadores da Faculdade de Engenharia acredita que sim, a julgar pelos resultados dos ensaios no âmbito do H2Cure, projeto que pretende lançar um protótipo de penso à base de mel na prevenção e tratamento de feridas crónicas. Às propriedades terapêuticas do mel isolado serão adicionados outros compostos como o ácido hialurónico, potenciando uma cicatrização mais rápida e eficaz da ferida, e com isso a possibilidade de novas formulações diferenciadoras no mercado dos dispositivos médicos, com um desempenho superior às existentes e a um custo unitário e global mais reduzido.

O desafio passa, sobretudo, por desenvolver uma nova técnica de esterilização do mel para fins clínicos. Além de Adriano Carvalho, o projeto conta com a experiência de Armando Araújo como investigador e Agostinho Rocha como bolseiro ligado ao H2Cure:

“O trabalho da FEUP neste consórcio passa pelo desenvolvimento de um equipamento baseado em aplicação de campo elétrico de alta frequência, baseado em tecnologia GaN e/ou aplicação de ultrassons de potência capaz de realizar a esterilização completa do mel”, reconhece Pedro Coelho, responsável pelo gabinete de Inovação da Faculdade de Engenharia, que assistiu ainda no Brasil, às primeiras conversas

group of researchers from the Faculty of Engineering believes that yes, judging by the results of tests within the H2Cure, a project that aims to launch a prototype of a honey-based band aid in the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds. Other compounds, such as hyaluronic acid, will be added to the therapeutic properties of honey alone, enhancing a faster and more effective wound healing, and with that, the possibility of new differentiating formulations in the medical devices market, with a better performance than the existing ones and a lower unit and global cost.

The challenge goes mainly through the development of a new technique for sterilisation of honey for clinical purposes. Besides Adriano Carvalho, the project counts with the experience of Armando Araújo as researcher and Agostinho Rocha as scholarship holder connected to the H2Cure:

“FEUP’s work in this consortium involves the development of an equipment based on high frequency electric field application and on GaN technology and/or power ultrasound application able to perform the complete sterilisation of honey”, says Pedro Coelho, responsible for the Innovation office of the Faculty of Engineering,

DA CASTANHA ATÉ AO MEL, HÁ UM OCEANO ATLÂNTICO DE PERMEIO

Na origem do conceito que os investigadores portugueses vão testar em breve em animais, esteve uma viagem a São Paulo, no âmbito da Rede BIN@ em 2016. João Transmontano, atualmente administrador da empresa de Portalegre, cruzou-se com a comitiva da FEUP. E de uma conversa de circunstância sobre um novo método de esterilização da castanha 100% eficaz utilizado pelo professor Adriano Carvalho num projeto familiar, acabaria por surgir a intenção de colaborarem em breve.

O motivo já estaria identificado na altura e em consonância com a atividade da Portus Pharma, (empresa cujo nome vem do latim Portus Calem + Portus Alcacer) que investe no desenvolvimento de matérias primas de origem natural para uso clínico no tratamento de feridas (escaras, úlceras de pressão, queimados, pé diabético, cicatrização pós-cirúrgica). João Transmontano desafiou então o investigador Adriano Carvalho para a criação de um processo de esterilização do mel para fins clínicos –surgia assim o H2Cure.

“O mel é uma matéria prima abundante em Portugal e tem um uso milenar no tratamento de feridas. Tem propriedades únicas na terapia”, refere João Transmontano. “O nosso objetivo é introduzir um produto no mercado como resultado deste projeto, que tem enorme potencial”.

FROM CHESTNUT TO HONEY, THERE’S AN ATLANTIC OCEAN IN THE WAY

A trip to São Paulo, as part of the BIN@ Network in 2016, was at the origin of the concept that Portuguese researchers will soon be testing on animals. João Transmontano, currently director of the Portalegre company, crossed paths with the FEUP committee. And from a small talk about a new 100% efficient method of sterilising chestnuts used by Professor Adriano Carvalho in a family project, the intention to collaborate soon arose.

The motive had already been identified at the time and was in line with the activity of Portus Pharma, (a company whose name comes from the Latin Portus Calem + Portus Alcacer) which invests in the development of raw materials of natural origin for clinical use in wound treatment (bedsores, pressure ulcers, burns, diabetic foot, post-surgical healing). João Transmontano then challenged researcher Adriano Carvalho to create a process to sterilise honey for clinical purposesH2Cure was born.

“Honey is an abundant raw material in Portugal and has a millennial use in wound treatment. It has unique properties in therapy,” says João Transmontano. “Our goal is to introduce a product on the market as a result of this project, which has enormous potential.”

da Engenharia Química para o grande ecrã from chemical engineering to the big screen

ascida e crescida em São Miguel, nos Açores, Ana Cabral escolheu o curso de Engenharia Química na Faculdade de Engenharia. Sempre teve vários interesses, mas cinema nunca foi uma possibilidade séria.

O destino, afinal, tinha outros planos. Um contacto através da rede social Instagram por parte da produção de “Lobo e Cão”, uma longa-metragem da realizadora portuguesa Cláudia Varejão, valeu-lhe uma história para mais tarde contar e vários prémios internacionais, de onde se destaca o da competição “Dias dos Autores”, paralela ao Festival Internacional de Cinema de Veneza.

Tornou-se uma das protagonistas desta produção de ficção que estreou em dezembro passado nos cinemas nacionais e que faz um retrato da juventude ‘queer’ açoriana.

“Sem nunca ter estado à frente de uma câmara, descobrir a minha personagem (homónima) ‘Ana’ foi o primeiro desafio. Encontrar o que há dela em mim e o que nos separa. Conhecê-la foi dar-lhe vida. Foi um privilégio poder ter dado parte de mim a este projeto e vê-lo

tornar-se cinema”, revela a estudante da FEUP.

O filme foi rodado em São Miguel, a terra natal de Ana Cabral, num trabalho de escrita de argumento, desenvolvimento e produção com a comunidade local, revelando um importante carácter social que levou à criação de um centro de apoio para pessoas LGBTQI+. Ana Cabral confessa: “Absorvi o máximo, ganhei um sonho ou dois… talvez até uma paixão, e isso não tem preço.”

orn and raised in São Miguel, Azores, Ana Cabral chose to study Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering. She always had several aspirations, but cinema was never a serious possibility.

As it turned out, fate had other plans. A contact via the social network Instagram by the production company of “Wolf and Dog”, a feature film by the Portuguese director Cláudia Varejão, earned her a story to tell later and several international awards.

She became one of the protagonists of this fiction production that premiered last December in national cinemas and portrays the ‘queer’ Azorean youth.

“Without ever having been in front of a camera, discovering character ‘Ana’ was the first challenge. Finding out what parts of her I have in myself and what sets us apart. To know her was to give her life. It was a privilege to have been able to give part of myself to this project and to see it become cinema”, says the FEUP student. The film was shot in São

Miguel, the birthplace of Ana Cabral, in a scriptwriting, development and production work with the local community, revealing an important social character that led to the creation of a support centre for LGBTQI+ people. Ana Cabral confesses, “I absorbed as much as possible, I gained a dream or two... maybe even a passion, and that’s priceless.”

Em conjunto com João Pedrosa, do Instituto Politécnico do Porto, entrou para a história do desporto universitário português ao vencer a final dos Mundiais Universitários de Voleibol de Praia disputada em Maceió, no Brasil.

“Sinto-me muito orgulhoso de ter recebido a nossa primeira medalha de ouro a nível internacional numa competição que representa exatamente o que nós fazemos e, acima de tudo, o que nós somos - estudantes/atletas”, avança Hugo Campos. O título mundial universitário vem confirmar a temporada de sonho daquela que é considerada uma das mais promissoras duplas do Voleibol de Praia português. Um sucesso que começou a desenhar-se com a vitória na Etapa Final do Campeonato Nacional de Voleibol de Praia, disputada no Centro de Alto Rendimento de Voleibol de Praia, em Cortegaça.

Os campeões nacionais – e agora campeões mundiais universitários – voltariam ao mesmo local para conquistar a medalha de prata no Cortegaça Futures, etapa do Circuito Mundial de voleibol de praia.

“Jogo voleibol desde os meus oito anos e passei muito tempo dentro de pavilhões com uma bola na mão. Tenho conseguido conciliar com a faculdade porque estou consciente de que o voleibol não dura para sempre”, confessa o estudante da FEUP, cujo próximo objetivo é ter a oportunidade de participar nos jogos de Paris.

ith one foot in the sand and the other in Chemical Engineering, FEUP student Hugo Campos recently became world university beach volleyball champion. Together with João Pedrosa, from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, he entered the history of Portuguese university sport by winning the final of the World University Beach Volleyball Championship held in Maceió, Brazil.

“I feel very proud to have won our first gold medal at international level in a competition that represents exactly what we do and, above all, what we are - students/athletes”, says Hugo Campos.

The world university title confirms the dream season of what is considered one of the most promising pairs of Portuguese beach volleyball. A success that began to take shape with the victory in the Final Stage of the National Beach Volleyball Championship, disputed in the Beach Volleyball High Performance Centre, in Cortegaça.

The national champions - and now university world champions - would return to the same venue to win the silver medal at the Cortegaça Futures, a stage of the World Beach Volleyball Circuit.

“The passion for the sport came very easily. I’ve been playing volleyball since I was eight years old, and I’ve spent a lot of time inside pavilions with a ball in my hand. I have managed to balance it with university because I am aware that volleyball does not last forever”, confesses the FEUP student, whose next goal is to have the opportunity to participate in the Paris games.

t was a reunion promoted in the city of Sheffield, the chosen stage for the realization of BIN@South Yorkshire, a middle-term event of the BIN@ network that gathered a set of personalities to debate the innovation theme. Eleven FEUP alumni resident in several cities around the United Kingdom got together for a dinner that counted with an extended entourage of FEUP, led by the director Rui Calçada. The meeting brought together alumni from Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheffield.

Estimular a cinefilia e cultura fílmica através de projetos educativos, editoriais, formativos e de debate está no foco da atividade do Centro de Cinema.

Contra-Fluxos é o novo ciclo temático do Batalha. Apresentado entre 29 de junho e 16 de julho, o programa interpreta a água como matéria explicativa da nossa história, mas também de múltiplos modos de conexão.

Nos próximos meses, serão apresentadas também retrospetivas dedicadas ao cineasta luso-suíço Basil da Cunha (de 3 a 17 de junho), à realizadora, atriz e argumentista sueca Mai Zetterling (de 8 de junho a 15 de julho) e a Annemarie Jacir (de 22 junho a 7 de julho), um dos nomes da realização mais proeminentes do mundo árabe contemporâneo.

A temporada termina com Oásis (de 19 a 22 de julho), um programa de verão com sessões de cinema, dentro de portas e ao ar livre, e um filme-performance de Jonathas de Andrade.

ith the mission of promoting knowledge and cultural enjoyment through cinema and the moving image, Batalha’s programme includes thematic cycles, retrospectives and focuses on contemporary practices, as well as links between cinema and other arts. Stimulating cinephilia and film culture through educational, editorial, training and debate projects is the focus of the Film Centre’s activity.

Contra-Fluxos is Batalha’s new thematic cycle. Presented between June 29 and July 16, the programme interprets water as an explanatory matter of our history, but also of multiple modes of connection.

In the coming months, there will also be retrospectives dedicated to the Luso-Swiss filmmaker Basil da Cunha (from June 3 to 17), the Swedish director, actress and screenwriter Mai Zetterling (from June 8 to July 15) and Annemarie Jacir (from June 22 to July 7), one of the most prominent names in contemporary Arabic filmmaking.

The season ends with Oásis (from 19 to 22 July), a summer programme with film sessions, indoors and outdoors, and a film-performance by Jonathas de Andrade.

Professional mentoring programme that aims to bring Alumni and companies closer to FEUP students. With this initiative it is intended that the mentor, a FEUP alumnus/a with an already established career, and the mentee, a FEUP student, can build a relationship of mutual help and share experiences. Besides the mentoring sessions, the program foresees the possibility of job shadowing and a visit to the company/institution.
