The Foundation for Future Generations is a Belgian public interest foundation which has been exclusively dedicated to sustainable development for the past 25 years. It is independent, pluralist and active throughout Belgium and internationally.

Our vision

PROSPERITY PARTICIPATION

The Foundation believes that it is possible to transform our society to pass on a liveable world to our children on condition that we consistently implement a 360° approach in our thinking and actions. The approach, which is specific to sustainable development, combines four dimensions simultaneously (the 4P): social (People), environmental (Planet), economic (Prosperity) and participatory (Participation).

PLANET PEOPLE PROSPERITY PARTICIPATION

Fondation pour les Générations Futures inscrit son approche ‘4P’ à 360° dans cadre des 17 Objectifs de Développement Durable des Nations Unies.

Our mission

The Foundation encourages a maximum number of people to embrace the 360° approach to deal with the challenges resulting from the complexity of current crises. It promotes, supports and finances students, young researchers, and project and initiative leaders who think and act with a 360° vision and transform the world. The Foundation provides its patrons, donors and partners with a platform of philanthropic services. It enables them to transmit their values and financial resources for the benefit of future generations. The Foundation facilitates exchange between the leaders of projects and initiatives and its large community of patrons, donors and partners.

The Foundation for Future Generations embeds its 360° "4P" approach within the framework of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our values

The Foundation’s thinking and actions are based on 4 fundamental values which drive the transformation for a more sustainable world: openness & trust, stimulation, positivity and autonomy.

A requirement for optimism and trust

Our responsibility to transform the present and contribute to building a viable future for the next generations requires that we be both optimistic and trusting.

We can counter the urgency of situations that make us feel discouraged and defeated with the optimism of the will. This is the approach of the Foundation for Future Generations: it turns consistently, deliberately and with open eyes to the positive 360° reflections and actions of the young people it identifies and supports. These young people and their projects increase the chances of creating a sustainable and desirable future for all.

And we counter the anxiety which paralyses, demotivates or radicalises with trust, which grows as it is shared and enables action despite uncertainty. The Foundation tirelessly shares this trust with its young award winners to strengthen them, link them and increase their autonomy. They, in turn, will be able to share this trust with future generations.

You also put your trust in the Foundation’s actions, enabling more and more of us to act for tomorrow, together. We thank you for your support!

The first recipients of the HERA Award Sustainable Behaviour

The HERA Award Sustainable Behaviour, sponsored by the MUTATIO Fund (see p. 23), was awarded by the Foundation for the first time this year. It went to the author of a dissertation on the dynamics of behavioural change. During the radio broadcast Les Éclaireurs on the RTBF, our winner Lydie Cleaver explained how the behavioural factor can slow the ecological transition.

The Future Proef Award will reward final theses or projects in Flanders

New: the Foundation is taking its first steps in the academic and post-secondary education landscape of Flanders. The Future Proef Award is an initiative of Duurzaam Educatiepunt (Vlaamse Overheid –Flemish Public Service), in partnership with the Foundation and Flemish higher education institutions. This year, for the first time, it rewarded the master's theses or final projects and bachelor's (short and long) theses or final projects on the topic of sustainable development with a 360° approach.

Focus on some of the 2023 HERA Awards winners

INTEGRATING THE CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ENGINEER TRAINING: THE TOOLS EXIST!

PARTICIPATORY GOVERNANCE IN HOSPITALS: EVERYONE WINS!

François Pirson focused on the issue of sustainability and its challenges with regard to the education of future engineers. The HERA Award Sustainable Engineering jury, chaired by Géraldine Tran, awarded a special mention to this research work, which contributes to the inclusion of sustainable development teaching in the engineering curriculum and to making the engineering profession and its approach more sustainable.

CLIMATE CRISIS: WHEN INACTION IS - OR ISN'T - JUSTIFIED BY ETHICS

Have you ever been faced with arguments such as “I don’t have the time” or “I don’t have a choice”, when you raise awareness of more sustainable behaviour? Lydie Cleaver, winner of the HERA Award Sustainable Behaviour, analysed the psychological mechanisms of “moral disengagement” which people use to disengage themselves morally from environmentally damaging actions. The jury, chaired by Fred Dorsimont, believes that this project provides a precious analytical framework to identify bottlenecks and take effective action to change behaviour.

Based on the systemic analysis and conceptualisation of 25 initiatives in participatory governance conducted in the hospitals of OECD countries, Céline Van Vaerenbergh, nominated for the HERA Award Sustainable Health, proposed an implementation guide for this type of project. The jury, chaired by Grégoire Wieërs, underscored the importance of creating new modes of governance, such as giving decision-making power back to patients and families.

SUCCESSFUL RESIDENT COOPERATIVES IN SWITZERLAND: AN INSPIRING EXAMPLE FOR BELGIUM TO FOLLOW

Does the future of urban housing lie in resident cooperatives? Romain Defrang looked at the benefits of this type of housing where each cooperative resident, owner of a private area, enjoys the benefits of shared spaces managed by the cooperative. Winner of the HERA Award Sustainable Law, this research work convinced the jury chaired by Michel Coëme. It believes that the project could be a guide for future collective housing and for notaries involved in this type of project.

THINK 360° b

The Foundation pushes back boundaries and innovates thanks to the HERA community

The year is marked by several meetings between HERA Awards winners. They are moments of exchange and reflexion about transforming our current society. They also provide an opportunity to push the 360° approach further and to create ties between award winners, jury members, the professors involved and partners.

Award winners inspire parliamentarians to reinvent democracy

The HERA Award Sustainable Democracy winners took part in a unique experience when they presented their dissertations to members of the parliaments. Tyane Storme, Anton Menacho and Anthony Ricotta provided the representatives of the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (picture 1) with inspiration to tackle crucial topics including the role of citizens in parliamentary debate and the role played by emotions in the deliberation process. The award winners also had the opportunity to exchange with them about democratic innovation.

Developing 360° thinking together

The first annual meeting of HERA partners (picture 2) was held in January 2023: it was a special moment of exchange and meeting for the companies and organisations that support the HERA Awards! Three 2022 HERA Awards winners presented their thoughts, experiences and practices with the CARE model for accounting or on the carbon account as levers for sustainable transition.

Think 360° in higher education

Each year, the Foundation organises workshops in the auditoriums of French-speaking Belgian universities and higher education institutions (picture 3). In addition to in-depth exploration of the concept of sustainable development via the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the students apply the 360° approach to their dissertation, academic or entrepreneurial project. Inspiring prototypes provide a breath of fresh air for the future

With the support of

The Prototyping the Future programme was created in 2019 thanks to the Albert Vanhee Fund for Future Generations, created by Marguerite Vanhee within the Foundation. It enables student entrepreneurs to develop a product, a service or a process with a positive societal impact. In 2023, 13 winners received a grant (up to €5,000) to prototype their concept, a key step in bringing their innovative idea to market.

Focus on several Prototyping the Future 2023 winners

Natalia, Zainab and Clara (FL/BRU) developed Maternia, a medical device for pregnant women which reduces the risk of stillbirths. It is used at the end of a pregnancy to provide real-time information. It enables quick reactions and calls for medical assistance in the event of complications.

Raphaëlle, Mathilde and Elisabeth (WAL) created Lingerie la Grenade, a line of lingerie for women who suffer (have suffered) from breast cancer. It is adjustable to the waist size to ensure greater comfort. It helps women rediscover that part of their femininity which is often forgotten because of their illness.

Loomy, the prototype developed by Christophe and Kimber (FL) provides all consumers with a practical picture of their energy consumption

Each colour displayed by the intelligent lamp indicates a different level of energy consumption, making it possible to reduce it and to distribute it better.

With the MilkSilk project Alistaire and Georges (WAL) recover milk which is not fit for consumption from farms and dairies. They recycle the milk as by-products for non-food industries.

The SE'nSE winners are building the world of tomorrow

With the support of

The SE'nSE call for projects was born in 2016 thanks to the SE'nSE Fund, created by Pierre Mottet within the Foundation. It promotes the entrepreneurial spirit of young people by supporting the launch of start-ups with a positive impact on the environment. In 2022, four young companies, in the early development stage, were selected and received seed capital and media exposure.

Adélaïde and Laetitia (WAL) were already receiving support via a grant to prototype their indoor composter, Greenzy. They have now started selling it. The composter crushes and mixes organic material to effortlessly create odourless compost.

Philippe and Alexander (FL), from Heau, are prototyping shower taps with a unique hydraulic mechanism that stores the heat from previous showers. This means that the shower provides hot water immediately without expending any energy.

Hendrik, Sander and Claudia (FL) are involved, with OceanBites, in the sustainable farming of seaweed on land to bring it to our plates. This plant protein is full of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants.

Thanks to the digital mutual assistance network Merciki created by Johan, Romain, Julien and Sébastien (BRU), exchanging items and services between private individuals is now free. It operates thanks to points called “Mercis” instead of euros.

Young people are sustainably revolutionising the agri-food sector and forestry

The Seeding the Future call for projects, developed in partnership with AgroParisTech (FR), was born in 2022 thanks to the Shinju Fund for Future Generations (see p. 23), created by Jérome Partos within the Foundation. Via this original cross-border partnership, innovative sustainable start-ups, active in the food, agriculture and forestry industries can benefit from a subordinated loan of up to €50,000 and from the support and recommendations of a jury of experts.

The first Seeding the Future winners

Yacine, Justine & Samuel (FR), founders of the Circul’Egg project add value to egg shells from processing plants. They transform them into new, high added value raw materials for other industries (such as the animal feeds and nutraceutical industries).

Paul, Valentin & Benjamin-Nicolas (FR) founded Proteme. This start-up develops, produces and sells ecological food coating solutions for fruits and vegetables to extend their shelf life and protect them against storage diseases.

A third winning project is developing a sustainable alternative to meat and soy protein. The product will be announced publicly at launch time.

Concrete innovations to protect oceans and rivers

The Aether Fund for Future Generations, created at the initiative of Christian Simonard, has provided financial support to sustainable initiatives related to water and the protection of aquatic ecosystems since 2018 (such as the development of anti-pollution projects and techniques or the preservation of biodiversity). Some projects are selected in collaboration with BeMed, a platform that creates and supports a network of players committed to the fight against plastics pollution in the Mediterranean.

Focus on some AETHER Liveable Planet projects supported in 2023

The Alissar Liban (LB) non-profit works to preserve the environment along the coast of southern Lebanon. It raises the awareness of school children, municipalities and companies about the importance of waste management and the sustainable 3R system (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) thanks, notably, to cleaning campaigns and awareness-raising sessions.

Gorgonians host an ecosystem specific to the Mediterranean. These corals, which are currently endangered, are often ripped out by anchors and fishing nets. Palana Environnement (FR) restores the ecosystem by replanting gorgonian colonies and promotes knowledge about their ecology.

iSea (GR) enhances the collection and management of waste from mussel farming and fishing in the Gulf of Thermaikos. Together with a number of sector players, it explores ways to improve practices, including recycling and the reuse of the waste collected.

Accelerating transformation with the partners

The Foundation encourages 360° action everywhere at all times. Through exchanges with its stakeholders about the systemic approach, it is working to make progress in the academic, entrepreneurial, financial and philanthropic worlds. It meets with the people involved in change by taking part in, and providing support for, the dynamics of sustainable development.

The 11th Foundation 3.0 Strategic Round Table (picture 1) brought together 15 European foundations in Amsterdam. They discussed the impact of their philanthropic strategies on the theme “Adopting cross-cutting perspectives to increase our impact”. This strong partnership (see p. 25), initiated by the Foundation, provides an annual opportunity to share experiences and concrete opportunities for action, and to formulate more systemic solutions to today’s societal crises.

In partnership with the Walloon provinces, the Foundation highlights exemplary sustainable development initiatives. In 2023, the Provincial Awards (picture 2) rewarded the collective artisanal bakery Le Clan Pains, the local micro sawmill La Source (winners of the Walloon Brabant's Trophées Incidences) and La Ferme du Buis (winner of the Hainaut horizons Award).

A wide range of players (financial, academic, entrepreneurial, philanthropic and public authorities) celebrated the inspiring innovations of young impact entrepreneurs supported by the Foundation during the Future Generations Summit (picture 3). They discussed the challenges faced by our society by cross-cutting perspectives on themes such as the modes of participatory governance, Business School Education and private funding for impact entrepreneurs

Sustainable finance: helping the transformation of peers for positive change

The Foundation encourages its peers to transform themselves to create positive systemic change. In addition to showing by example (see pp. 14-15) that first impact investing is possible and productive, the Foundation also implements the levers of collaboration, knowledge sharing and learning with partners to contribute to changing the current financial system.

Sustainable management of foundation assets

The Foundation initiated and chaired a working group within the Belgian Federation of Philanthropic Foundations which brings together, raises the awareness of, and provides tools to foundations for the sustainable management of their assets. Two publications (which will soon be downloadable from our website) were developed by the working group in 2023. They guide the foundations in-house and in their dealings with bankers to improve the societal impact of their capital

Taking a different approach to teaching finance

During SDG Forum 2022, the Foundation organised (and actively participated in), jointly with ICHEC Brussels Management School, a workshop (picture 1) on the evolution of finance education necessary given the complexity of current environmental and social challenges based on the SuFi Master class (with which the Foundation is a partner). Several inspiring possibilities were proposed, such as a more multidimensional approach to the material taught.

Transforming the world by changing finance

The creation of Impact Finance Belgium (IFB), to which the Foundation contributed, wants to change the impact of finance. IFB has developed three actions to achieve this goal: a market study on the consequences of societal impact as a priority for investors, the emergence of the “Impact Finance Belgium” institute and the organisation of a first event bringing together Belgian societal impact finance players (Belgian Impact Day). A session was dedicated to the assets of foundations (picture 2) and the importance of dedicating them to economic initiatives with a positive social and environmental impact.

Contribute via 360° giving

At the Foundation for Future Generations, we believe that the coming generations have the ability to transform the world we live in with positive 360° innovations. Would you like to support the future generations and provide them with a more sustainable society? You can help us continue to implement this mission through 360° giving. You can do so in several different ways:

By making a gift

You can make a gift for several reasons: you want to give a boost to the initiatives with a positive societal impact of our young people. Or you’ll be getting married soon, or you’re already parents, and you want to support meaningful projects via your bridal or baby registry. Like Joséphine & Philippe, who just got married, or Sarah & Xavier, who are new parents, you can ask friends and family to make a gift to the Foundation. Or, you can make one yourself, if you like, that will make it possible to extend the Foundation’s transformational scope. Every donation is granted a tax deduction of 45% on the gift amount (for every gift ≥ €40/year). Note: you can also make a gift online via our website.

"We’re very happy that, on the occasion of Tom’s birth, our friends and family were in step with our vision of solidarity thanks to their gifts to the Foundation!", Sarah and Xavier, the new parents.

"It was important and symbolic for us that we ask our friends and family to support the Foundation for Future Generations via our wedding. Our marriage and the Foundation’s activities are, after all, both focused on the future!", Joséphine and Philippe G.L., happy newlyweds.

YOUR GIFT (deductible), DONATION, BEQUEST OR PERSONAL PHILANTHROPIC FUND

Your gifts (with tax rebate) can be made to the Triodos account of the Foundation for Future Generations - IBAN: BE98 5230 4030 5393 - BIC: TRIOBEBB. If you have any questions, or for a personalised set up, please contact Benoît Derenne, our director, by email at b.derenne@futuregenerations.be or at +32(0)81 22 60 62. Thank you for your trust in the Foundation and for helping it reach its transformation goals!

By making a (dual) bequest

We prefer not to think about the time when we will no longer be here. However, it’s wise to plan for that time. Thanks to you, the world will continue its transformation. You can indicate in your will how you would like those close to you and the causes that are important to you to benefit from your assets. In addition to your family and friends, you can also leave your assets to a specific cause by making a lasting donation to future generations. Your bequest will benefit from special tax treatment (Brussels 7%; Flanders 8.5%; Wallonia 7%).

By investing in a Gold Share

Do you have shares that have virtually no value or which are blocked/in a difficult inheritance process? Rather than letting them sit unproductively in your share account and paying the associated banking fees, why not make a gift! A Gold Share will enable you to contribute to the funding of sustainable projects of great social value. Nine banks are participating in Belgium: Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, Bolero, CBC, Degroof Petercam, Dierickx Leys, ING, KBC and Nagelmackers.

Discover Gold Share here: actionenor.be

By making a donation

Following the lead of Christina De Wilde and Benoît Laduron who entrusted the Foundation with their gift of the Hébergie CO2 Solidaire, you can also provide a place or an asset for the benefit of the generations that will come after you. Your donation will benefit from greatly reduced donation rights (Brussels 7%; Flanders 8.5%; Wallonia 7%).

Creating a philanthropic Fund

Do you believe in the ability of our young people to make the world more sustainable and want to help out? At the Foundation for Future Generations, you can create a fund that will help support one or more of the Foundation’s actions or help new initiatives which you believe are essential. The Foundation currently hosts nine Funds. Find out about them (see pp. 22-23) and get inspiration from their founders to, why not, create your own fund!

Philippe ROTTHIER Fund – A more sustainable vision of architecture

"La notion de changement était clé dans mon métier de psychothérapeute Elle nous concerne tous à un niveau sociétal, avec de plus en plus d’urgence, vu l’évolution du monde Avec ce fonds, je souhaite contribuer à la compréhension et l’accompagnement de ce changement " (Monique Dekkers)

In 2010, together with the Foundation for Future Generations, Philippe Rotthier, an architect passionate about vernacular architecture, designed an award for future architects called the HERA Award Sustainable Architecture. It encourages young people to meet the challenges facing the planet and its inhabitants via a 360° approach. Philippe Rotthier made the award permanent in 2014 and provided support for the development of the HERA Awards by creating the Philippe Rotthier Fund for Future Generations, the first personal Fund hosted by the Foundation.

"In these times of multiple crises, I would like to encourage young people to build a world, which I hope, will be better and shared."

On 28 August 2022, the Foundation for Future Generations, Philippe Rotthier, his family, several award recipients, partners and jury members celebrated the 10th anniversary of the HERA Award Sustainable Architecture. The event provided an opportunity to highlight the winning research works of the past 10 years which have changed the approach to architecture and its practices. A number of different sector players also shared their outlook on the key challenges of sustainable development, the evolution of the architect’s profession and the current needs of architect training.

MUTATIO Fund – “I can’t, I’m morally disengaged!”

By creating the MUTATIO Fund within the Foundation, Monique Dekkers wanted to stimulate behaviour change mechanisms to encourage progress toward a more sustainable world. Her Fund is based on two concepts: support for research conducted on the topic by students in their dissertations and support for the Foundation’s award winners, the alumni, who are dealing with the topic in their jobs.

"The concept of change was key in my work as a psychotherapist. It is important to all of us at a societal level, with an increasing degree of urgency given the way the world is evolving.

Thanks to this fund, I want to contribute to understanding and supporting change."

Many HERA Awards winners who continue working in sustainable development wonder about behavioural change: how do you convince clients, colleagues or shareholders about the importance of more sustainable development? How do you move from awareness to action? To find answers to these questions, the Foundation organised two consecutive round tables which brought together award winners and experts in the field: Fred Dorsimont (Behaven), Karine Weiss (Université de Nîmes), Lydie Cleaver (winner of the HERA Award Sustainable Behaviour) and Océane Dousteyssier (Le petit coup de nudge).

SHINJU Fund– A Fund to boost entrepreneurship that maximises environmental benefits

The Shinju Fund for Future Generations, created in 2022 by Jérome Partos within the Foundation supports sustainable and innovative start-ups in a new sector: the life sciences

Find out more about the MUTATIO Fund here: fgf.be/fonds-mutatio

The young entrepreneurs selected by the Seeding the Future call for projects (see p. 12) already in its second edition in May 2023 – demonstrate a high potential for positive impact on the environment via a 360° approach. Thanks to the SHINJU Fund, they benefit from seed capital, in the form of subordinated loans. The objective of Jérome Partos, creator of the Fund, is to enable start-ups to focus on the development of their project without having to worry about dilution logics. The Fund signed an agreement with AgroParisTech to promote start-ups in French-speaking Belgium and in France. The partnership provides the Fund with a range of skills, a large network and an outlet for projects.

"The Shinju Fund for Future Generations provides a boost to young companies which share the belief that we can’t wait to protect our environment any longer. It provides a boost to help ensure that our focus doesn’t wander “elsewhere."

Foundation
The Foundation supports a growing number of sustainable initiatives and ideas for tomorrow

The actions carried out by the Foundation are made possible thanks to the different types of support it receives from its volunteer juries, individual donors (via the fundraising programme "Gold Share", see p. 21, or gifts from private individuals), the hosted Funds financed by its patrons, its partner companies, foundations and private and public institutions.

How do we allocate the funds we receive?

Young graduates, (future) entrepreneurs, 360° prototype and start-up creators were at the heart of our concerns in 2022. They account for 83% of the resources available (see inside pages of the report). In addition, we dedicate 7% of our resources to ensuring the continuation of our action and the impact of the Foundation (see below).

You provide us with the resources needed to act

In 2022, nearly two-thirds of the Foundation's financial resources - which are also increasingcame from you, individual donors and patrons, through hosted funds! Further strengthened by the contribution of partner companies and other foundations, you therefore guarantee our independence and give us the capacity to support more and more projects.

Foundation 3.0: 10 partner foundations in 2023

Foundation 3.0 – Strategic Round Tables (see p. 14), has constantly welcomed new member foundations since the first Round Table in 2013. They are led by the Foundation for Future Generations and a growing group of strategic partner foundations, including the Fondation de la France (FR), the Fondations Chimay-Wartoise and Cyrys (BE) or the Porticus Foundation (NLD). In 2023, two international foundations, committed to the in-depth transformation of their operating methods for the benefit of a

more sustainable world, joined the partnership: Nordea-fonden (DK) and the Gulbenkian Foundation (PT). Together, the participating foundations are mobilising all of their resources to foster positive systemic change.
