t e m e w w o h HER VERSION
I had been online dating for a while and decided to try Tinder in hopes of matching with someone. Tinder is an online dating app that allows users to like or dislike other users, and allows users to chat if both parties like each other. If you swipe left, you dislike the person. If you swipe right, you are interested and want to chat. One day in October, I had swiped and realized that I was not matching with anyone. Initially, I thought the website was broken so I swiped right on a bunch of pictures and out of frustration, closed the app. The next morning, a man named “Dee” sent me a “Good Morning” message. When I saw his picture, I did not remember swiping right on his profile, but he had a handsome face so I decided to respond. We engaged in conversation and shortly after describing our jobs, we realized that we worked for the same agency. Then, we connected on our love for church and the rest of the conversation only went uphill from there. I decided to give him my number and he IMMEDIATELY sent me a text. Things hit a bump in the road when I asked for access to his social media profiles. I just wanted to see pictures of him to get a better idea of what he looked like and how he was built (Attraction is key!). He was reluctant and as soon as he felt that I was about to dismiss him, he caved in. :-) We ended up going to lunch later that day as a Meet and Greet. I made him drive to Fit Noodles which was 30 minutes from the job in Pasadena. I wanted to see how far he was willing to travel for me. He met me without hesitation. I wore a gray sweater with jeans and red heels. My hair was in a low bun and I wore red lipstick. (I think) he wore a polo shirt and jeans. I know he is going to write that he thought that I was short, but my first impression was that he had a football player build to him. He will also write how badly I parked. -_He was nervous. I was not. I can remember him visibly shaking and breaking
eye contact. He talked a lot and I didn’t mind because I enjoyed his voice. After we finished, I knew I wanted to see him again and we went on our first date. Our first date was at a cigar lounge with his friends and I remember feeling comfortable. He was supposed to take someone else, but he told me that he preferred that I come instead. I loved his honesty and it made me want to learn more about him. He was such a gentleman. He opened doors, was attentive, and respectful. He won me over. After our second date, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I said no. The next day, after our third date, I said yes :-) I I wanted to keep him on his toes. We have been inseparable ever since. <3
HIS VERSION It was a sunny Thursday morning, I was laying down tired from going to the gym two days before. I decided to grab my phone and get on Tinder before I got up and got ready for work. I was sort of new to this app and I was not expecting to meet anyone on it. I remember going through some profiles and seeing this beautiful chocolate sista with some beautiful lips. Her profile read: Single, No Kids, and educated. I thought check, check, and check so I swiped right and to my shock it was a match, meaning she has already seen my profile and swiped right and the app will allow you to text each other on the app. To my surprise she was available to talk, so I thought I may be late to work today. The 1st thing I asked her was if she was a church going woman. I was going through a rough time in my life and I was attending church on a weekly basis. I didn’t want to date a woman that did not attend church and had a relationship with Christ. Thankfully she was and she attended a smaller church then I was going to. We texted each other on tinder for a while then we exchanged phone numbers. We both decided to get up and get ready for work, we figured out that we worked at the same place. I
remember sending her a video message while I was on my way to work, and she sent me one in return and I remember thinking she had some really nice lips, they were full and bright red, so I complimented them. I got to my desk and we made lunch plans and I didn’t do any work, I was excited about my unexpected lunch date with this beautiful woman I just met! She decided for us to meet at a place called Fit Noodles, I looked up the address and this place was far from work so I figured I will be using leave. I remember leaving early to meet her and driving for a while until I came to a small restaurant in a shopping center. I walked in and waited for her, after a few minutes I saw this beautiful woman with very red lipstick walk in and I knew it was her. The first thing I thought was she is really short! We hugged and said hello! I was clueless about what to order, she already had a favorite dish she was ready to order. I got a lime shrimp dish that was good but I messed it up by adding peanut sauce. We talked and it seemed like time was speeding but I didn’t mind, I already knew we were going to come back to work late. We finished our lunch and I walked her to her car and she was parked and crooked, I remember us laughing at how she parked. She got in her car and headed back to work, driving behind her, I noticed she drove really fast in her Honda Accord. We get back to work and I remember being really excited, I don’t think
I did any work for the rest of the day. The next day we meet again for lunch at the Salsa Grill. She was wearing a grey and orange Bucknell shirt, I had no idea what that school was. She told me that is the school she attended and their homecoming was that weekend. I thought it was nice to see a woman with school spirit like that, me being a Bowie State alumni I know how exciting it can be. We had a great time talking about some of our past relationships and I was surprised at how open she was about her past, she told me some good things and some shocking and I admired it and that is when I knew she was different. The 3rd day I was going to meet up with some friends at a cigar lounge. I had planned on taking someone else but I decided that I wanted to spend more time with Brittany so I brought her instead. We met one of my friends at Slow Burns and we opened up about our previous relationships and the things we wanted. We stayed out late that night and went to Double T Diner. I remember wanting to spend everyday with Brittany because she is fun to be around and we make each other laugh and she is open about anything. Over the years this has not changed. It is a joy to spend time with her and I can’t imagine life without her.

AS WE EMBARK ON OUR FUTURE JOURNEY AS HUSBAND AND WIFE, WE MUST PAY HOMAGE TO THOSE FROM OUR PAST WHO HAVE TRANSITIONED.
ALICE GASQUE
BRIDE’S GRANDMOTHER Granny there isn’t a day that goes by that I do not think of you. During one of our last conversations, I remember asking if you ever thought that I would get married and you gently nodded ‘yes’. I am the product of your faith and your prayers. You imparted such wisdom to me. You showed me how to live virtuously and how to love unconditionally. Thank you. I love you.

BRIDE’S GRANDFATHER Pop-Pop, you were the example of a godly man that helped me see what I needed in a husband. I miss you so much and life is not the same without you. You were a great father, grandfather, uncle, and a friend. I see so much of your personality in Darius that it soothes my grief and brings me peace. Thank you for setting the standard.

Mother. There are two words that can sum up how I feel about you: Thank you. Thank you for: The perfect childhood. You showered me with love, hugs, kisses, compliments, gifts, and fond memories. You made sure I never lacked. You worked so hard and just know I have always noticed. Your endless wisdom. Everyday you make it a point to teach me. Whether it is a lesson on fashion or a scripture, I listen, I retain, and I apply it. Your unconditional love. You love me on my best days and you love me just as much, on my worst. Just a smile and “I am proud of you” and I am happy. You speak to all of my love languages and you have shown me the definition of love. I could go on forever, but thank you. You have taken such good care of me and my heart for the last 35 years. As I embark on this new journey as a wife, I will never forget the lessons you have taught me. I will always be your baby girl with the pie face.
