24.06.2014

FoF-10-2015 Topic: Manufacturing of custom made parts for personalised products / 1 Specific challenge: The manufacturing of customised products (e.g. consumer goods and medical devices) requires the development of new strategies integrating design with manufacturing and incorporating appropriate control methodologies to ensure small or large lot quantities which meet the specifications. Examples include new custom made parts or spare parts on demand either to sub-divisions of sectors/products or personalised to an individual as well as unique identification marking of products. New manufacturing processes and machines will need to be developed which are flexible at the local level to meet specific consumer demand and mass customisation where rapid translation between different specifications is required. In order to address customisation, advanced manufacturing processes(e.g. additive manufacturing or electrical discharge machining) need to enable processing of multi-materials, lightweight and high-strength materials or functionally graded materials, as well as more flexibility and rapid reconfiguring capabilities. For all customised manufacturing, it is necessary to have quick realisation from design to production in one process step as well as economic production systems down to single and small lot sizes. Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft | Sensengasse 1 | 1090 Wien | www.ffg.at

24

FoF-10-2015 Topic: Manufacturing of custom made parts for personalised products / 2 Scope: Research activities should be multi-disciplinary and address several of the following areas: • Development and integration of advanced design and manufacturing technologies able to transform such new product-service data descriptions and protocols into manufacturing operations and processes exploiting. • Development of new machines and processes integrating advanced materials for the manufacturing of personalised parts and products. • Seamless data integration across the process and supply chains for the fast production and distribution of custom made parts and products. • Methodologies and tools for the management and running of effective value chains for the fast production and delivery of personalised products. Activities expected to focus on Technology Readiness Level 4-6. A significant participation of SMEs with R&D capabilities is encouraged. The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU between EUR 3 and 6 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately. Nonetheless, this does not preclude submission and selection of proposals requesting other amounts. Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft | Sensengasse 1 | 1090 Wien | www.ffg.at

13

24.06.2014

FoF-10-2015 Topic: Manufacturing of custom made parts for personalised products / 3

Expected impact: • Increased capability to provide value added products/services and to rapidly follow the market dynamics by means of fast production and delivery of customised parts and products. • Reduction by 50% in the lead-time for manufacturing one new custom part with respect to current values for same requirements. • Cost reduction of personalised products manufacturing by 20%, by decreasing lead times in products and processes development and the time to market of customised parts and products by 30%.

DIFFERENCES NMP FP7/H2020

H2020 is different from FP7: • impact more important • initial business plans • how to bring solutions to the market • what to do after the funding period and how to be financed? How to overcome the valley of death? • shift from „funding“ to „public investment“ => ROI-return on public investment to be demonstrated • arguments from industry more important • market development • excellent science not sufficient, many proposals have excellent science => will be ranked according their impact

EVALUATION 1 - AWARD CRITERIA 1. Excellence • Ground-breaking nature (eg. level of ambition, beyond the state-of-the-art, novel approach, addresses challenge, … ) • Conceptually robust; trans-disciplinarity considered… 2. Impact […] extent to which project outputs contribute to: • The expected impacts listed in the work programme under the relevant topic; • Enhancing innovation capacity and integration of new knowledge; • Strengthening the competitiveness and growth of companies by developing innovations meeting the needs of European and global markets; • Effectiveness of the proposed measures to communicate the project, disseminate and/or exploit the project results, and appropriate management of IPR. 3. Quality and efficiency of implementation • Coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources; • Competences, experience and complementarity of the individual participants, as well as of the consortium as a whole; • Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including risk management.

EVALUATION 2

Priority of proposals with equal score • For each group of tied proposals • First consider those that "fill gaps" in the WP • Of those, look at score for 'excellence', then at score for 'impact' (reverse for Innovation actions & SME instrument) • If still equal, look at SME budget (in total !!!) • If still equal look at gender balance in key personnel • If still equal, consider other factors (overall portfolio, wider H2020, EU objectives etc) • Then repeat for those that don't "fill gaps"

Experiences - DO NOT, BE NOT Too ambitious, too complex to be believable (no science fiction) Difficult to read unclear, chaotic not relevant for the Call and the Work Programme not going beyond the state of the art (breakthrough) objectives, methods, approach unclear => how to achieve the objectives missing results neither clear nor quantified, no exploitation all results at project end, no intermediate results unrealistic cost estimates unbalanced project consortium, “alibi” partners or competence missing management structure & processes not appropriate => decision making + strengthening competiveness industry => to have industry on board Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft | Sensengasse 1 | 1090 Wien | www.ffg.at
