S T R U C T U R A L S T R AT E G Y The primary structural system consists of deep glulam beams and large columns internally exposed throughout the building. The 250 mm deep beams ensure that the portal frames can span effectively over the 15 m roof of the main gallery hall with support from columns every 5 m. Primarily, I chose to express the timber structure of the building because it reflected the city’s sustainability ethos and provided a sense of integrity of construction. For the foundation, a concrete ground beam lines the perimeter of the building along with pile foundations carrying loads from each of the glulam columns. To prevent potential water penetration within the timber frame as a result of varying ground conditions, 500 mm of blockwork extends underground from the external walls.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES Overall, the building uses a combination of black corrugated steel sheets and prefabricated pine louvre panels as a representation of the surrounding industrial environment. The pine panels are part of a rainscreen cladding system with battens and counter battens to ensure water drainage and air ventilation. To complement the timber facade without overpowering the darker finish of the roof, aluminium was used on the window frames and the curtain wall mullions. All roofs are mono-pitched and covered with standing seam tinted finish aluminium sheeting to prevent rain from penetrating the structure and redirecting to the gutter. In the main gallery hall, I integrated the physical and conceptual aspects of the building by using the internally expressed structure as a means to exhibit the bicycles via beams elevated from the ground.
