Changes to StuCo elections and campaigning brings difference for officer candidates BY JORDAN BRYSON

Students interested in voting for Student Council [StuCo] elections must go to the election table during their lunch on April 20 to vote. This is a more active voting process than usual. Before now, all students have been required to vote during homeroom. “It’s more like the actual voting process,” StuCo cosponsor Shelley Parks said. “The kids who vote are the ones who care.” After much deliberation, juniors Ashlynn Laspe and Austin Weidner came to a consensus that Weidner will run for president and Laspe will run for vice president. Originally, Laspe wanted both to run for presidency and be opposed, but decided to run for vice president instead. “I don’t want to show people the that the spot is unwanted,” Laspe said. “And I don’t need to call myself ‘president’ to prove I’m a leader.” As of press time, candidates don’t have the endof-the-year assembly to give speeches. There wasn’t a block of time to have the assembly due to End of Course exams, AP tests and finals; however, candidates are working with administrators to find a slot of time. “I don’t care if we don’t have one,” candidate Hannah Brown said, “but I want the seniors to be able to have the last one of their high school career.” The two candidacy forms aren’t due until April 12 and 16, but the known candidates are all juniors and, as of press time, unopposed. Ashley Butterfield is running for chief of staff, Ashley Flerlage for treasurer, Hannah Mason for parliamentarian and Brown for secretary.

Howell High School does not have any sports facilities other than a turf stadium; however, starting in early June, construction begins on baseball and softball fields at Howell. FHSD plans to have players using the fields by fall of 2013. “We have the same needs as other schools,” Activities Director Dave Witter said. “We’re doing the same things they are, but we’re doing it on one field.” The total cost of the project is approximately $2.1 million which will come from a bond issue for school construction projects. This finished product is going to consist one Varsity baseball and softball diamond, one diamond for the JV and freshman baseball and softball teams, one practice field for football and soccer teams and a throwing area for the track team. Howell’s baseball and softball teams have been practicing on rented fields at C and H ballpark. According to Witter, the cost of renting other fields, renting a shuttle and the safety of the students driving to practice were large contributing factors to constructing fields on Howell’s campus. “We have kids going off campus and driving on [Highway] 94 in rush hour just to practice,” Witter said. “They pass other high schools with fields, and they have to drive to Defiance and New Melle to play. It’s necessary for schools to have fields on campus.” FHSD decides where and how to spend money based on what each school needs. “We go around to each school and see what each school has and needs,” Chief Financial Officer Kevin Supple said. “We’ve worked with the activities directors at each school, and they gave us some advice about the fields.” According to FHN sophomore Patrick Cronin, he doesn’t think the Howell Vikings will have an advantage because of the new fields. “The fields don’t make the teams any better,” Cronin said. “The only thing that makes a team better is a lot of practice.”

The Ecology Club works every spring with Mission: Clean Stream, a program that works to clean and restore ponds and streams in the St. Louis area. Over the past few years, Clean Stream has collected over 10 tons of trash from local streams and ponds. Eric Seider and incumbent Marty Hodits were voted into Francis Howell’s Board of Education on April 3. The two will serve three year terms on the board. Seider, FHN parent, is passionate about education. “I’m just what you might call a helicopter parent,” Seider said at Meet the Candidates night. “I’ve been involved with my kids education, and I know how important education is. I’ll bring that passion to the school board and will do what is in the interest of students all the time.” Hodits believes in meeting the needs of Francis Howell’s patrons, taxpayers and students. “I ran for the school board to insure that the main purpose of the Francis Howell School District is educating every student no matter what their needs,” Hodits said at Meet the Candidates night, “and to continue with sound financial management, to provide quality educators and staff members to meet the needs of all our students.”

Student Council [StuCo] decided to take over and host their own coffeehouse after the event, originally held in the library, was canceled. The coffeehouse was held on April 2 and 3 in the multipurpose room. Here, students could view the talents of their fellow students at FHN during English classes. When the coffeehouse cancellation was announced, StuCo noticed a large amount of negative response from students. “[StuCo decided to take over] because students kept asking,” StuCo President Ashlynn Lapse said, “and StuCo runs a whole lot, obviously, so we wanted to help.” Something new StuCo added to the coffeehouse is live art. Art students Kayla Busby, Lindsey Usry, Haley Gilbert and Kali Farrell were given the opportunity to live paint at the coffeehouse. “I didn’t want to do poems,” Busby said, “and having artwork in it is different because now I can demonstrate it, and I have heard people say it is cool to watch.” While watching at the coffeehouse, students snacked on cookies and soda. StuCo did not have the time or resources to serve the usual hot chocolate and coffee. There was, however, the usual performances ranging from singing to short stories, as well as an art display. This year, 37 of the 43 students that tried out made the cut to perform in the coffeehouse. “It is easier for me to express myself, and it is more creative and fun,” performer Alyssa Miller said on why she chose to perform a poem and a sonnet. Overall, many students find the StuCo coffeehouse very comparable to the coffeehouse hosted by the library. Some students, however, think the multipurpose room is a much better location for the coffeehouse than the library. “I liked it better than last year,” sophomore Courtney Vishy said. “There was more space, and I liked their set-up more. StuCo should definitely have coffeehouse again. It is just something everyone can look forward to.” 04 FHNTODAY.COM

Travis Dodds:

PROGRESSIVE MUSICIAN Some say he’s hipster, some think he’s a musical genius, and others think he’s Swedish. As a new student at North this year, 18-year-old senior Travis Dodds has made quite an impression. Before moving to Missouri, Dodds lived in Jonesburg, Arkansas and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “I like the way a lot of foreign people dress,” Dodds said. “When I moved here, people thought I was from Sweden because I didn’t talk much, dressed nice and had blond hair.” This past summer, he poured his energy into playing music before he knew anybody. Already used to being on stage from playing shows with his former band in Arkansas, Dodds had no problem performing at Frau Fest. He was received well by the audience. Some were shouting “We love you Travis” periodically throughout his songs, but he remains humble and focused on the guitar. 08 FHNTODAY.COM

“It’s indescribable,” Dodds said. “Nothing could ever match that. Nothing could ever come between me and playing guitar. I would rather there not be McDonalds than not play the guitar, and I love McDonalds.” He enjoys progressive rock, jazz, and metal. Minus the Bear, an experimental indie group from Seattle, is his favorite band. Dodds describes hipsters as people who have occult fascinations with music festivals and art as well as fetishes for thrift stores and coffee shops. Despite his love of the arts, Dodds claims he’s not one of the hipsters. “I don’t have the personality of a hipster,” Dodds said. “I just dress like one.” He notices that “being a hipster” is becoming more and more popular. “I noticed that trend has grown for girls,” Dodds said. “One day they’ll be wearing P.E. clothes and the next day they’ll be wearing a button-up with a leather jacket.” PAGE BY EMILY FORST & BRIANNA MORGAN

sters, he ardently expresses that he is not one. “I race bikes,” Leistner said. “I don’t ride bikes with skinny jeans and earrings like all the little hipsters do. They’re shallow. They’re like sheep. They kind of look and dress like their favorite hipsters.” Long-time friend and fellow art teacher Denise Maples would consider him a hipster. Leistner believes he’s more “mod.” “He’s always trying to be cutting edge and experimental in hairstyle and dress,” Maples said. “He doesn’t like to be cliche.” Leistner values individuality over conformity at this point in his life. “If anyone’s trying to be anything, I know it sounds cliche, but be yourself,” Leistner said. “And if that’s who you are, great. I think when I was young, I was guilty of that too, trying to be something. Now that I’m old, I don’t care. I think if I were in my twenties, hey, I might try to be hipster.”

It’d probably have to do with my clothes and style. I’m pretty hip. It also has to do with the fact that I’m into art.” University. “I love all forms of expression,” Gilbert said, “and the process of it is a way for me to express myself, my ideas, and emotions.”

Defying the stereotypes of a male dominated hobby, senior Casey Goettel decked out her dream car with some unique features. Her personalized 2002 Camaro, with its black stripes on bright red, makes Goettel feel like she stands out. “I feel like when I’m driving down the road, everyone knows it’s me,” Goettel said. “I’m proud of it because I put all my money into it and did it all myself.” By adding kicker subs with flashing lights, fender stripes and many other modifications, Goettel managed to construct a car that she loves, is proud of, and shocks people to see her step out of. It’s a car she’s proud to show off. “[It’s special because of] all the work she put into it,” senior Angel Moore said. “I know she likes showing it off. She likes all the cool stuff she’s put in.”

She was among the few chosen to go to Hollywood. “My first thought when I found out I made it was kind of like a big black hole,” Katie said. “I didn’t know what to think or say, but when you look down and see that golden ticket in your hands, it feels absolutely amazing.” Last May, Katie auditioned with 12 other girls, including FHN graduates Brittany Burke and Laurel Reese. Out of the 12 girls, Katie was the only one to go to Hollywood. “To be honest that was something personal I had to go through,” Laurel said. “I already knew she made it. If I made it too, it would be awesome, but if I didn’t, it would suck. I had to pull myself out and move on because she would do the same for me.” Katie believes seeing the other singers’

potential made her second-guess her own talent along with singing in front of the judges. “Performing in front of the judges was definitely nerve racking,” Katie said. “You don’t want to mess up because they are looking at you with expressionless faces and straight in the eye so they don’t give anything away.” While Katie was eliminated after making the top 150 contestants, she’s still grateful for what she considers an amazing experience. “The best part about being on the show was everything,” Katie said. “Meeting new people from all over the nation was amazing. Just having this experience under my belt was awesome and getting to sing in front of the judges was just absolutely mind blowing.” Katie plans on trying out again once she feels she can handle herself and the situation better. She also wants to explore other singing opportunities that may come her way. “I think she can do it,” mother Linda Bailey said. “She is a person who isn’t afraid to try new things. She could really go somewhere far with all the talent she has to offer. Whatever she decides to do, she can do it.”

New bakery owner takes on business challenges for a truly “sweet” reward

As kids pile onto the rink, junior Drew Landherr laces up his skates and speeds out, eyes peeled to spot a struggling skater. When duty calls, Landherr is ready to patrol the rink to help any skater that needs it. It is all part of the job for this Great Skate employee. “[The hardest thing about my job] is probably mad parents,” Landherr said. “They get mad if their kid gets hurt, and we cannot get to them in time.” Even though Landherr occasionally has to deal with angry parents, that doesn’t stop him from having fun on the job. In addition to skating, Landherr gets to talk on the microphone and man the stereo as a DJ playing song requests from the kids. “It’s fun because I get paid to skate,” Landherr said. Aside from skating, Landherr enjoys working with kids at his job. “[The most rewarding thing about my job] is probably helping kids out and being a better person,” Landherr said. “People always say ‘You’re lucky’ when they find out about my job.”

From the depths of her kitchen, she rises to the top. Laura Andert, baker, decorator and owner of Laulie Cakes. Laulie Cakes is a business that Laura started years ago in her very own Kitchen. She was a stay at home mom who ran across a simple dilemma: no bakery that she went to was able to bake the cake that she had envisioned for her daughter’s birthday. That was when she first picked up her spatula and began baking. That was when Laulie Cakes was born. “I was a little scared. It was really exciting when the store opened,” Laura said. “You kind of feel like you’re crossing the finish line.” With only a few decorating classes behind her, Laura’s business began to boom, though she had no formal training in culinary arts. She feels that by not having any experience except for her few classes, she has a creative advantage over other bakers. “I think that culinary school teaches you to think inside the box,” Laura said. “When you don’t have that training it helps

you to be able to think outside the box. Your brain has more freedom as opposed to learning by the rules.” Laura didn’t need a degree, she had talent and love for the game. The first time someone walks into senior Samantha Best’s room, the first thing they notice are the pigs. Best has been collecting piggy banks ever since she was in the seventh grade. Her desire to collect piggy banks was sparked when her sister brought her a souvenir back from Chicago. “Since going to Chicago would interfere with school, I wasn’t allowed to go, but my sister was. She brought me back a gift, and it was a piggy bank,” Best said. “It started my collection, and I have always been fond of it.” Best’s collection consists of many kinds of piggy banks from family members, including her biggest contributor, her mom. Best’s favorite pig is one that instead of being round like a pig, it has a scrunched body and a big nose. Best thought it looked like a pug, so she named it Pug Pig. “I think it’s pretty cool,” sophomore Catherine House said. “Her whole room is filled with piggy banks, and it looks pretty amazing.”

Senior Cara Kyonka does things differently by sewing her own Prom dress for the second year in a row

Finding the perfect Prom dress is stressful for some girls, who spend countless hours browsing store after store looking for ‘the one.’ Senior Cara Kyonka decided her junior year to devote that time to sewing her own perfect Prom dress. This year, when the dress wanted was out of her price range, she decided to make her own dress once again. “You couldn’t tell her dress last year was handmade,” senior Rebecca Harms said. “It was cool because she spent way less than I did, and it still looked awesome. I still find glitter in my car from it.” Kyonka started sewing in sixth grade but never really made anything big until high school when she started making clothes. Starting her sophomore year, she took Clothing and Textile I, II and Advanced, all three of the sewing classes available at FHN. Her biggest inspiration to start her sewing hobby was her grandmother. “My grandma sewed a lot of stuff,” Kyonka said. “When she passed away I was hugely determined to take it up because she was actually supposed to teach me.”

Kyonka buys most all of her materials from Jo-Ann’s fabrics and Hancock fabrics. This year she spent a total of $100 for all the materials to make her dress, saving her a lot of money. She started working on her dress right before spring break and worked for a solid three weeks, putting almost 100 hours into this project. “Cara has a passion for sewing,” teacher Diana Harrison said. “She has an internal drive to fix things and make them perfect. I can really see her going somewhere with this passion.” On prom night, when she’ll be wearing her finished gown, Kyonka says she’ll feel very accomplished because this dress is the most complicated thing she has ever tried making. Up until last year when she made her first Prom dress, she had never made anything so elaborate. This helped her expand her sewing talent. “This dress has shown me how much I’ve grown in my sewing abilities,” Kyonka said. “Last year making my dress was to challenge myself and see if I could do it. This year is about pushing myself to make my vision a reality.”

hile cruising down a steep hill at about 45 mph, senior Christian Hickerson quickly gains speed. He feels a gust wind and a rush of adrenaline. He’s on top of the world. While riding, he looks forward to see a car coming towards him. With little reaction time, Christian bails out of the way, skidding across a driveway. “I got scars all over my arms and legs,” Christian said, “and when my mom noticed, she tried to take my board away, so I went and hid it under my bed.” This wasn’t a normal skateboard accident. Christian was longboarding, a sport similar to skateboarding that he picked up while living in California. Also known as “sidewalk surfing,” longboarding originated in Hawaii and made its way to California. Christian’s mom, Elaine Hickerson, was at work at the time of the accident. She works at a pediatric hospital, so she’s used to seeing injured children. When she heard about her son’s accident, she was afraid he would have to go to the emergency room, but the wounds weren’t as bad as they originally thought.

"I got scars all over my arms and legs, and when my mom noticed, she tried to take my board away, so I went and hid it under my bed." -Christian Hickerson Elaine remembers telling Christian that she never wanted him to long-board again. He didn’t listen. “I’m okay with it if he is wearing protective gear, which he doesn’t do,” Elaine said. “He’s had some pretty intense wipe-outs.” Christian doesn’t believe longboarding is more dangerous than skateboarding; it just depends on how crazy you get with it.

There are also different tricks associated with this sport. Slalom, an act of weaving in and out of obstacles, is one trick that Christian particularly works on. He’s also learning to slide which will allow him to slow down without putting his foot down. The major differences between skateboarding and longboarding is that a longboard is much bigger and faster.

None of Hickerson’s friends long board so he goes solo on his adventures. This activity serves as a form of exercise for Hickerson. (sarah teson)

“Longboarding is almost like surfing with wheels,” Christian said, “and it’s a lot more relaxed than skateboarding.” Christian started this unique sport when he was 11-years-old. Several of his friends were longboarding at the time, so he decided to try it out. He found it to be a relaxing activity, and he continued it when he moved to Missouri. “I like longboarding because it reminds me of California,” Christian said. “It’s a chilltastic thing to do.” While it may be “chill-tastic”, longboarding does come with many safety concerns due to the speed. Christian’s mom isn’t the only one concerned about his safety. “I’m constantly scared he’s going to get hit by a car, but it’s really cool and super fun,”

sophomore Alexis Happe said, “though I would never try it; I’m not that talented.” Every moment Christian longboards is a dangerous one, but they’re moments Christian lives for. His most exciting memory while longboarding was when he was gliding down a huge hill, cars barreling down both sides of the road. He managed to maneuver himself between the cars and come out on the other end unscathed. He replays this moment in his head as a triumphant one. While others may view this sport as risky and treacherous, Christian cranks up his music and finds it relaxing escape from reality. “Even though it’s dangerous, I like the adrenaline rush, plus it reminds me of the good ol’ days back yonder,” Christian said.

Designed for downhill racing, this style of longboard measures 38 to 43 inches long and is closer to the ground. This provides a low center of gravity, which is essential for speed and balance going downhill.

slalom Also used for racing, slalom boards are built for quick and sharp turns. With a length of 25 to 35 inches, lightweight build, and a wider wheel base, these boards are very agile and maneuverable.

Cruising A mix between a longboard and surfboard in shape. They are some of the longest at 60 to 80 inches, and are used at slow speeds for transport and surf-style tricks.

trick The trick board is very short (rarely longer than 42 inches) and similar to the average skateboard. They are meant for the same kind of tricks as skateboards, except they are heavier and need more skill to operate.

Hybrid These longboards have the greatest variety, but most hybrids are generally shorter. They also may have an unusual shape, which is the result of wheel cutouts for sharper turns while going downhill.

After a combined 29 years playing soccer, seniors Jade Shinn and Megan Frkovic spend their last year at FHN playing on the Varsity girls Soccer team. After high school, both girls are headed to Truman State University on athletic scholarships. Frkovic was offered a scholarship during the high school season her junior year. Shinn was offered her scholarship at the beginning of this past summer. “I was excited when I found out she was going,” Frkovic said, “It will definitely help me adjust to this new place, having someone I have already been playing with for the past four years.” Both seniors are excited to play together at a D II college. “I think it will make the transition from leaving home to college a lot easier,” Shinn said. “I’ll have a friend that I’m already comfortable with and a connection to home.”

“Mirror Mirror” takes the classic story of Snow White and tries to turn it into a family friendly comedy. This attempt resulted in seven annoying dwarfs and an entertaining yet forgettable plot. “Mirror Mirror” follows the story of Snow White as she fights to gain her kingdom back from her evil stepmother, find true love and discover what happened to her father. Snow White is played by Lily Collins, and she did a dreadfully awful job. Her acting did not make me want to cry or laugh. It sounds like she was reading them off a piece of paper, and all I could think about was the person holding her cue cards. The evil queen played by Julia Roberts isn’t any better. I spent more time staring at her outlandish outfits then paying attention to her character. The prince is played by Armie Hammer, whose only redeeming quality is his good looks. As the movie went on, he started to annoy me more and more. However, the seven dwarfs are by far the most annoying part; they were overly obnoxious. Even though the plot is forgettable, I enjoyed watching the special effects and looking at the costumes. The special effects create a believable town and the costumes are interesting to say the least. I could tell that the children in the theater enjoyed the movie, but overall, the bad jokes and bad acting overshadow anything in the movie that could have been good.

Season 14 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars premiered on March 19. During the past few seasons, I’ve started to get sick of the show. I usually find myself turning the channel after just a few minutes of watching the show. Although many of the “stars” could have done better, the show was bearable. To my surprise, none of the contestants scored lower than a 20. But then again, I’ve started to think the judges can no longer tell the difference between

good and bad. I question why the show still reels in so many views. I can’t say that I’m looking forward to the rest of this season. To be honest, I probably won’t watch it for very much longer. I don’t have time to watch a pointless “dance” show. I’ve gotten tired of seeing people who are considered B-list celebrities parade around looking ridiculous. Based on what I saw, if I had to predict my favorite “star” that I would want to win, it would be Steve Urkel (Jaleel White). He might not have done the best, but he’s one of the true “stars” of the show.

This book may be an easy read with a slightly predictable plot, but the well-crafted setting and developed characters keep the story interesting. While “Stay” is no literary masterpiece, it’s a good story with relatable characters and is perfect for any girl who doesn’t mind reading yet another book about a girl with boy problems.

The Mars Volta are an experimental rock band that is pretty respected in the hipster community. Their early albums are pretty strange, and I really don’t enjoy them much. However, their latest is “Noctourniquet,” a decent rock album that is a much more tolerable experience. Some highlights include “Empty Vessels Make the Loudest Sound,” “Molochwalker” and “Vedamalady.” These tracks are a pretty pleasing blend of psychedelic rock and synth. Overall, this album isn’t album-of-the-year material, but it’s a nice listen. I give it three out of five stars.

This guy trashes films I enjoy, dresses up as two different women and talks to himself. He took a perfectly good movie like “The Help” and ruined it by making the funniest scene in the movie racist and pretending to eat feces. My IQ dropped several points from watching him. I can’t imagine what audience Dawson is targeting, unless his audience is everyone, and he is hoping to tick off anyone who will listen. I never plan to watch another Dawson video.

The U.S. has in its possession 5,100 nuclear warheads. The destruction resulting from the notorious bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima was devastating, but these bombs were miniscule compared to what is available to great military powers of today. But funny thing, I’m not too worried about the U.S., Iran or any other country using nuclear weapons. The reason I’m not worried- at least not too worried- is because I’m mad. That’s right, I said it. I’m not worried about Iran joining the nuke club because of Mutually Assured Destruction (M.A.D.). This is the theory that nuclear capability is a deterrent against nuclear war. It prevents the use of weapons of mass destruction due to fear of retaliation. This theory gave the arms race between the U.S. and Soviet Union during the Cold War a certain legitimacy, despite the obvious dangerous implications. Furthermore, I’m not worried about the impending doom of the world due to relatively small developments in other nation’s military arsenals because it would end up worse for them than for us. Besides Russia, no other nation comes close to having what America does in it nuclear arsenal, but even the former communist state poses no threat to the U.S. or any other nation in the world due to the U.S. having the capability to completely destroy Russia completely in retaliation. With that said, I’ll just sit back and let M.A.D. do the dirty work.

Americans are forced to suffer every four years through rapid fire of campaign advertisements. These political TV commercials have all the fun of regular commercials with the added bonus of making you feel like the country is doomed. To make this whole thing worse, according to a Stanford study, political advertisements have proven to have minimal effects on the people’s votes. So while these ads are doing no good, CNN reports that President Obama plans to raise $250 million more for this election then he did back in 2008, and according to the

New York Times, Mitt Romney has already raised $63 million as of Jan. 31. The candidates might as well be throwing money in a bonfire. At least that would warm the homeless. Candidates talk about how they want to cut taxes and spend the money they do have on worthwhile things, like helping people under the poverty line. These noble causes are hindered by the fact that those candidates and their supporters throw out millions to try and get elected in the first place. So when you go up to the voting booth in November, think long and hard about all the money wasted and all the money that could be used for a greater purpose.

The mentor system helped me in different ways over the past year. I’ve come to know my mentors and appreciate what they do. They also helped me feel more comfortable in high school. Overall, the mentor program is good. They break the tension between freshman and seniors and help the freshman with problems. But I think with improvements, the program could have a greater impact on freshmen and FHN as a whole. Mentors are already improving some things. Sponsor Anne McPartland said they are working to improve how the mentors interact with freshman during home room. They are also working to make the mentors easier for the freshmen to get in touch with. The mentor program already does lot to help freshman transition more smoothly into high school. Joking around is something that everyone does. Life would be very boring if there wasn’t that one person who always knows what to say to make everyone laugh. Unfortunately, our society has come up with inappropriate jokes that are hurtful and bring back the issue of stereotypes. Yo mamma jokes are hurtful comments that are meant to be funny. You do not know what goes on between someone and their mother. Home situations are varied and the joke is not worth the damage that is done. Blonde jokes are also examples of cruel jokes. I have blonde hair, and I am not stupid. Even though I know it’s just a joke, I still do not like it when people make fun of me with blonde jokes. I am not dumb; like you, my head is filled with brains, not air. People need to think before they speak; it is not worth hurting someone just for a few seconds of laughter. Just remember that you may be joking, but not everyone thinks you are funny.

LETTER TOTHE EDITOR THIS IS A SCHOOL, NOT A STREET CORNER! Ladies, so I get we’re women and have certain assets that are fun to show off. That doesn’t mean we need to come to school looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. I mean, this movie kicks butt for sure, but that doesn’t mean we need to emulate her style at school. I see girls everyday that let their thongs hang out and their pants fall below their butt, and let me tell you, it is not pretty. For that matter, neither is the current look of sagging pants that many guys in my school seem to think makes them attractive. It doesn’t. Neither does wearing shorts that look more like underwear, which many girls also think is hot. It’s not. You just become the butt (no pun intended) of the jokes or Facebook statuses that your peers make. And the sad thing is that it doesn’t seem to bother you. Just because you have skinny legs, flat abs, or a toned butt doesn’t mean you have to flaunt it. There’s something to be said about a girl who keeps a little bit of mystery in her wardrobe, especially in the times where the opposite is seen everywhere. I know and fully accept that I am not the best person to be telling you this, but I’ll try to do it with you. Let’s try and class up our act. Once upon a time there was a high school where students were allowed to use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even educational websites. The teachers were technologically competent, used social media to connect with other schools and demonstrated how to use the Internet responsibly. Teachers gave students online freedom. If students made mistakes, teachers would correct them, guiding them back to focus. No unsafe students. No parent complaints. No bandwidth issues. It seems as though this place could never exist, at least never in FHSD, but it does. It’s a magical land called Chanhassen High School in a faraway kingdom called Minnesota. In this district, administrators trust students to use social media at school. They don’t mistakenly assume students will abuse it because they are confident in the education they have provided. There, administration does not ignore such a pertinent aspect of students’ lives because they realize that each year, more careers require social networking knowledge. Social media is now a practical skill for the real world. Because it is a skill that is becoming as common as typing, it has naturally been incorporated into their curriculum. Chanhassen uses their resources wisely. They allow students to ac-

cess the plethora of knowledge in YouTube videos, tweets and blogs. There are whole other magical lands out there to connect with in a single tweet or Facebook status. Perhaps FHSD could connect with Chanhassen online. After all, FHSD does have a Twitter account. FHSD could invite successful social media users from faraway places to help bring itself out of the Dark Ages of Technology and unblock YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. If all goes well, maybe teenagers can overcome archaic Facebook statuses like “My mom sucks” and tweets like “#DTF >”, entering into a new era of Enlightenment. The cost of bandwidth expansion and possible exposure to inappropriate material is insignificant in the grand scheme of things in the District. What students can get out of social media is much bigger than stumbling across a nude picture (which happens even with the strictest Internet filter in place) and the money for a bandwidth upgrade. Social media can no longer be looked upon as a danger to the kingdom. Students benefit from resources they find through social networks now and, in the long run, gain knowledge to responsibly manage their unique social media presence. Maybe, just maybe, FHSD can one day pride itself in being a majestic kingdom like Chanhassen.

WHY USE IT? Social media can serve many different purposes in education. These are all skills that can be taken out of social media exercises in the class room.

IMPROVE WRITING

Social media is concise. Good writing is concise. Twitter can teach students to focus on what’s important and tighten up their writing.

COMMUNICATE

When interacting with people on social media, students will learn effective ways to communicate with people that they can use in any situation.

STAY INFORMED Social media is the perfect way for people to learn stay updated on the local, national, and global news without even realizing it.

BREAK BARRIERS

With social media, it’s just as easy to connect with someone from down the hall as it is to connect with someone from across the world.

BE RESPONSIBLE

It will only become more important for students to understand web safety over time. What better way to teach them than to link social media with school?
