Here is some advice to best stay organized this school year.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A new year begins today. As we walk into the building, we are hopeful for the time that lies ahead of us and we are looking forward to a year that is closer to what we know as “normal.” Let’s start this year off on a great note FHN. Although there are still things like protocols and a confusing parking lot making this year different from years past, we can still make this year great. A new year can mean a refresh and if we start on a good note, it sets us on a path of success and growth for the year

to come. In this edition of the North Star, we included some cheerful content like student’s styles and an interactive word search competition. We also covered some more informational content like places and people to know in the school and clubs that we offer. This paper can serve as both a guide and tool to you as a student but also as a welcome into what we are like here in the FHN community.

Editor-in-Chief, Justin Brewer

What is one piece of advice you have? “Be as efficient with your time as possible and take summer school classes.” Lacy Smith, 11 “It’s good to know your way around school.” Alicia Hunn, 10 “Don’t procrastinate and listen in class.” Chloe Perkins, 11 “Turn your work in on time.” Drake Morris, 10 “Be yourself.” Jack Engelhard, 10

FRESHMAN ADVICE

You’re starting your freshman year here at FHN and you’re probably wondering how you make your next four years feel like home. Here is some advice that you should consider during your first year here. You’ve probably heard this many times before but always try to stay out of drama, it only makes things more stressful on top of school work and all that. The school’s food actually isn’t bad at all. So don’t be afraid to get food there. We also get Papa Johns Mondays and Thursdays. In terms of finding your classes, use the numbers on the walls they help a ton. If you find that they do not help, the teachers here are so helpful. (Plus tardy’s are excused for the first week of school so that’s helpful too). Try to be as organized as possible. If that means finding a binder that can hold all your classwork and keep them separated then do that. You do not have to, but it’s very beneficial to be involved in something in school. It can be dance or a sport or even a club. You were given a voice for a reason, so if you feel something is not right or you just simply need help, use that voice.

SOPHOMORE ADVICE When you went into high school you only met about half of your freshman class. Branch out and talk to the people you haven’t met yet. Make some friends with upperclassmen if you haven’t already. They are really nice to talk to. You might even be in mixed classes with them depending on the classes that you signed up for. They are really good for getting advice. You can relax a little about school or grades. Freshman year was your first year of high school and to work really hard and to start out high school with a good GPA. I’m not saying slack off. I am saying that if you get a B or C in a class it’s not going to ruin your life. You can kinda let go about stressing about getting straight A’s. Get to know your teachers. It’s good to have a personal relationship with teachers whenever you need help with something or you need a recommendation for someone/ something. Where what you want/what you’re comfortable in. If you wanna wear sweatpants everyday then do it. If you wanna wear a dress everyday then do it. Wear what makes you feel good about yourself, regardless of what your gender you

“You were given a voice for a reason, so if you feel something is not right or you just simply need help, use that voice. “ You want to work really hard this year on your grades, then once you reach sophomore year you can kind of start to relax a little. Don’t however, try to stress yourself too hard, it can take a toll on your mental health. Pay attention to credits when you are registering for classes, this could give you a chance to leave school earlier your senior year if you get all of the necessary credits you need. These are just a few things you should consider, have a great Freshmen year. (Content by Makayla Brown)

“Depending on when your birthday is, you should try to get a job. It will help you save up for college if you are planning on going to college or to buy a car if you don’t already have one. Or it will just give you extra spending money. “ identify with. Depending on when your birthday is you should try to get a job. It will help you save up for college if you are planning on going to college or to buy a car if you don’t already have one. Or it will just give you extra spending money. If you are still 15 then you can get a workers permit from the main office and have your employer sign off and the office staff sign off. (Content by Stephanie Lichtenegger)

JUNIOR ADVICE Just. Keep. Working. However, hard work does not necessarily lead you to a college degree of some kind. Not everyone’s destination is a typical university, and it’s still incredibly respectful to go into a trade, the military, or the workforce. More times than not, effort and determination towards what you believe will get you further in life and satisfy you more than just following a cookie cutter pathway to college, family life, and eventually, retirement. Don’t be afraid to escape to abnormality to achieve what you know is best for you. Some people are waiting for high school to be over, and some can’t bear to leave. It seems somewhat far off but your departure is soon approaching. It’s not about trying to do everything you can while you still have the time, it’s about doing what you want and being appreciative of it as often as you can. Listening to authority figures is starting to get old. Throughout childhood and adolescence, we’re constantly under the watchful eye of any given number of higher-ups, and no matter your future, you’ll always be somewhat under the control or influence of somebody. Come to terms with this and find an outlet if you’re upset, because even after high school, if you move out or move away, somebody will keep you in their pocket.

SENIOR ADVICE This is it, the home stretch. It goes fast, and before you know it, you’ll be walking up those steps and shaking the principal’s hand. Make sure to take your time, there are many intricacies in senior year. From taking your hardest classes, to keeping relationships strong, these are just two examples. It can sometimes seem overwhelming, but trust me, it is worth it. Avoid burnout if at all possible, because senioritis is a real thing, and you will catch it really quickly if you don’t focus. Just take it in stride, and go one moment at a time. Don’t be scared to put yourself out there too; there is only so much you can do, and you can’t get these years back. Join a new club that you may have been hesitant to join earlier, or try out for a sport, you never know how good you are until you try. Taking risks can be a good thing, and trust me in senior year, it is worth taking those risks to find satisfaction, or enjoyment, or anything else that makes you happy. Stay looking forward as well, because looking backward and reminiscing over the past will just set you backward. Make sure you have solid friendships that you can carry with you after high school also, and make sure those friends are worth having, which goes along with making new friends. You never know who you may connect with and form

Learning things is something a lot of people take for granted. Going to school is at least something to spend your time doing, and one could spend a similar amount of time working and making money, but the variability and growth you experience learning and testing yourself won’t be found in a job. Find a way to learn about your interests, or how to pursue a hobby, or learn a skill you’ve desperately wanted to. It’s just not the same working the same day everyday in a full time job. great relationships that can last a lifetime. Finally, make sure you have a plan. You don’t want to go out into the real world without a plan. Whether it be going into the workforce, the military, or going off to college, you need to have a method set in place of how you are going to reach your goals. It sure seems like a lot to prepare for, but I know all of you can attain graduation, it just takes a little bit of effort, and a little bit of fun too. (Content by Brendan Leuthauser)

A: Yes, 2 foreign language credits are required to graduate from high school. Q: Am I able to take classes over summer to earn credits? A: Yes, you can take health, personal finance, etc. over the summer More Info Want to see a list of all the classes and more, follow the link to the complete booklet. bit.ly/NSenrollmentguide

DEAR FRESHMAN, Planning out schedules for high school can be a stressful time because you must make sure you are taking all of your required classes to graduate. Some students may plan their schedule around taking the most elective classes they can take, while others may try to take all their required classes first. Taking all of your core classes first may be the best option for those who want to have a more relaxed senior year. This means you would take all of your required classes between freshman and junior year and have the decision to graduate early or have an easy senior year. This route may require taking online classes over the summer to get extra credits. Another option is to space out all of your required classes throughout all four years so that electives can be taken each year. This will create a schedule that has both non-challenging and challenging classes, allowing you to take part in PLTW classes all four years or take other classes that build upon each other. Overall you should take into consideration how difficult you want your classes to be and how much work you want to put into them. Whether you want to put all your work in at the beginning of your high school career, and only worry about applying to colleges or planning after high school career paths during your last year, or if you want to have only a slight challenge all four years of school. NEW FACES

Francis Howell North’s hallways are filled with many new faces this year. These faces include a new principal and many new teachers teaching a variety of subjects

JOINING THE COMMUNITY These new teachers will be joining the FHN community this year:

Sharon Parkinson World Language Jennifer Martin Math

Shawn Farrar Science

Q&A WITH DR. LAMMERS What is your job at FHN? I am the interim principal, so I’m serving as the principal for this school year. How long have you been in the education field? This is my 18th year. I am starting my eighteenth year in education. Is this your first time serving as a principal? This is my first time serving as the lead principal of a building. I have been an assistant principal, a dean of students and an associate principal. Then, of course, I was a summer school principal a couple times. Were you a teacher before you became a principal? Yes, I was a social studies teacher. Is social studies your favorite topic in school then? On the teaching side, yes. When I was a student it was math. Have you always worked for FHSD? No, actually my first teaching job was at University City High School. I taught social studies there. I taught there for three years then I was a social studies teacher at Francis Howell Central. I was a dean of student at Francis Howell Central and I was an assistant principal at Pattonville High School and Fort Zumalt North High School. Then I was the associate principal at Francis Howell Central for five years and I have been Director of Secondary Education for this school district for the last three. What are you most looking forward to this year at FHN? Just being in the building. The daily interaction with students and staff. It s something that you can do at the district level but it is a lot harder. You’ve got a lot of meetings and stuff going on and you have to make that special trip to get to a school. Whereas all day long every day I’m on a school campus with students and staff. You go into education to be in contact with students and staff and now I get to do that again.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

YOUR TOP 5 MUST HAVES 1. ORGANIZATION

A messy binder or backpack can mess up your entire school day. You can easily lose or damage your schoolwork which can negatively affect your grade. Certain teachers are known to even take away points if your paper is damaged. With so many papers to take care of, remember to recycle the old and keep the new.

Most of your teachers won’t allow you to use your phone while you do your schoolwork. You’ll find math problems in nearly every class you take so having a high tech calculator can make you work much easier to deal with and manage. A graphing calculator is highly recommended due to the fact that it has many features that you will need in math class that a normal calculator wouldn’t have.

3. BINDER/FOLDERS

You will have a lot of work to manage throughout your schooldays. It’s nice to have a certain color folder for every class you take and a binder to hold all of the folders in. Keeping you binder clean will not only make just your entire schoolday easier, but your life to.

4. MANY LAYERS OF CLOTHING

While it may still be hot outside, North tends to be a cold environment year round. Bringing a spare hoodie in your backpack or wearing a long sleeved t-shirt is definitely a good idea as certain classrooms can feel like it’s 50 degrees.

5. A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

With a new school year beginning a positive outlook is very important while you meet your new teachers and classmates. Be open to constructive critism from your peers, make the most of your days at North and don’t let anyone put you down.

Main Office & Attendance These offices are located to the left, right when you walk into the front main entrance of the building. This is where you will go to leave the school early or come to school when you’re late. This is also where you can find resource officer, and most of the principals.

Nurse’s Office It is located right by the main entrance and attendance office. Once you enter the main entrance in the front of the building take a left until you see a sign that says “nurse”. It is attached to the main office so if you can’t find it, you can always head into the main office for help.

Counselor’s Office It is in the same hallway as the nurse’s office, attendance office and main office. Once you enter the main entrance in the front of the building take a left and walk until you see “counselors” . It will be on a sign on the wall. This office is on the same side of the hallway as attendance.

Office 23 On the bottom floor tucked in a corner near the student parking lot entrance is office 23. It is located just to the left of the entrance under the greenhouse. Students go here to discuss grades or disciplinary actions, find out about tardies, and absences, and questions about a parking pass.

Cafetaria (Commons) This is located straight down from the learning commons. There are four entrances into the cafetaria. Those entrances are located by the butterfly hallway, in the science hallway and just off the art hallway. Two of the entrances are located off off the science hallway and are usually less crowded.

Butterfly Hallway This is located right outside the cafeteria. If you walk straight forward from the Learning Commons you will be in the butterfly hallway. This tends to be the most crowded hallway in the building so it is best to avoid it if possible. This hallway is an “intersection” of four very busy parts of the school.

The Gyms 7 Both of FHN’s gyms are located on the bottom level of the school and are right across the hall from one another. In this area you can also find the athletic trainer, weight room and activities office which is located inside the large gym. The easiest route to these gyms, from the main level, is via the stairs at the very end of the butterfly hallway.

Science Hallway There are mutiples ways to get to the science hallway. Using the main entrance as a starting point, you can go left and continue straight until you can’t then turn right. You can also go right throught the butterfly hallway, turn left before the stairs, continue straight then turn left again and continue straight. You’ll be able to see it after that.

8

Actvities Office Located right inside the doors to the large gym on the bottom floor is the activities office. This is where you can get your paperwork to participate in sports and turn it in once completed. This is also where you can purshase sports passes and pay activity fees.

9

Learning Commons When you walk into the main entrance, take a right and walk straight until you see the two big doors labeled learning commons. It will be the first set of doors on the right side of the hallway. Sometimes you go here for your english class to check out some new books.

Where are some places you have gotten lost in the school? “I got lost when I was going to the health room. They didn’t have a sign, so I got extremely lost.” - Gia Grapenthin, 10

“When I was a freshman, I got lost in the basement and in random stairwells all the time, sometimes I still do because of the many ways to get around there are.” - Shaylea Flieger, 11

“I got lost on the bottom floor trying to find my homeroom. It was like a maze. I asked a teacher nearby for help finding it, and she led me to the room.” - Savannah Degenhardt, 10 “The basement because there are a lot of classrooms with windy hallways. I also got lost in the locker room because I didn’t know there was two parts. ” - Melisa Leon-Ornelas, 12

“After the lunch period it was very difficult for me to find my way to my next class because all of the hallways are intertwined with each other.” - Parker Bruns, 11

“When I was a freshman, I used to get lost on the 1st floor a lot because I never had a lot of classes on that level.” - Sarah Martin, 12

Also known as the library, this quiet, tech-friendly environment is great for studying. Students often gather here before school as well. Here you can find many helpful resources.

This is just another perk of being a senior. When it’s warm, seniors can visit to enjoy their lunch around the outdoor tables.

This is the office where you check in if you are late. This is also where you check out if you are leaving school early.

Avoid this hallway at all costs during passing period. Traffic turns into a stand still making it nearly impossible to get to class on time.

This is the place to be if you need any information about the A+ Program or classes, or if you just need to talk to someone. This is also where you’ll find the counselors.
