“Bethlehem” takes Hollywood Film to be made about the Christmas City By Anissa Vasquez Web Editor

The city of Bethlehem is about to be taken to the big screen. Corbin Bernsen, star of the USA show “Psych,” will be producing and starring in the film adaptation of the Liberty High School state championship victory. Originally, the movie was to be about the decline of the Bethlehem Steel and the Liberty High School baseball team in the 1980’s. However, that would be too difficult to recreate on a low budget. Instead, the filmmakers

decided to reproduce the 2008 Liberty football state championship team. The movie will be about a high school football player whose team makes it to states after his father has died. Corbin Bernsen will play the boy’s grandfather and coach. According to lehighvalleylive.com, Ian Harding from “Pretty Little Liars,” Devon Werkheiser of “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” and Taylor Spreitler of ABC’s “Melissa & Joey” will also be starring in “Bethlehem.” Not only will the film be named after the Christmas

City, but it will also be shot in many locations around town as well. The filmmakers scouted the area and plan to use Liberty High School, the Bethlehem Steel Stacks, Monocacy Park, East Third and Fourth streets, the lookout on South Mountain, and even The Bethlehem Dairy Store (The Cup) in their productions. As posted by the Twitter account of the filmmakers, @BethlehemFilm, there will be casting calls for residents of the Lehigh Valley as shooting begins. There will also be many opportunities for extras, especially to fill the Frank Banko Field. “We're very excited about

this film,” said Mayor John Callahan to The Morning Call. “While we've had other projects use Bethlehem as a backdrop, this is the first time a filmmaker has chosen to focus on the city itself.” It is likely that this movie will not be in theaters, but instead will go straight to on demand video. The release date is estimated to be in fall of 2014.

Procrastination nation How to succeed by halting procrastination work on a project one hour a to do later.” By Carly Pfaff The Freedom Forum

By definition, procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing a task. Most people can relate to procrastination. Sunday night comes, and the five paragraph essay that was assigned at the beginning of the week soon becomes a top priority, as it becomes obvious

it was not a good idea to wait until the last minute. With a few helpful tips and tricks, procrastination can be easily eliminated. All it takes it a little motivation to spark some newly found success and confidence. Start by planning goals. By setting up reminders and planning a to-do list, it is easier to accomplish more. It is better to

day than five hours the day before it is due. Make sure not to get distracted. Social networking is a major distraction when trying to accomplish tasks. In fact, according to Psychology Today, “Procrastinators actively look for distractions, particularly ones that don't take a lot of commitment on their part.” Just think to yourself, “The more I do now, the less I have

It has been proven that by getting the recommended amount of sleep and eating healthy, success will be found. By going to sleep and waking up earlier, more tasks can be accomplished in a single day. Sleep is a time to recharge and being tired is definitely a cause of procrastination. (continued on page 2-PROCRASTINATION)

NYC goes a week without murder “It’s an anomaly” By Jonathan Fiorentino Journalism student

New York City had no homicides for a whole week. According to the New York Post, on Oct. 14, the mayor’s office found this to be a very positive and unusual statistic according. The numbers in 2012 were 346 murders, but dropped to 256 murders in 2013. The last occurrence of this event, or lack thereof, was Jan. 17-25,

2012. “It’s an anomaly. No doubt about it,” said a veteran police source to the New York Post. More than half of the 256 murders this year due to firearms. The rate of murders using firearms went down 28.8 percent since this time 2012.

Although, some shootings did not turn out to be a murder. There has been 879 shootings thus far. In 2012, there was 1,145 shootings; this is a 23.2 percent difference. The real question is: why is the crime rate and murder rate at an all time low? Some think the decline

in crime is due to how well the police force is doing and the improvements it has made. “I was never scared when I lived in New York. I didn’t leave because of crime; I left because of Hurricane Sandy. I also lived in a nicer area of New York by the beach and bay,” said Gabriella Greenhoward, freshman and a former New York City resident.

Sands Casino to expand later this year By Cassie Sedler The Freedom Forum

The speculation that the Sands Casino may undergo expansion once again has brought much discussion among the citizens of Bethlehem. Since the Sands Casino first opened its doors to the public in 2009, Bethlehem has increased in visitors and revenues. As a result, the Sands has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the historic city. According to The Express Times, this was proposed as a result of a pending grant that, officials hope, will provide Bethlehem with land that can be used toward making im-

provements in the city. “Slot revenues increased from $21.6 million in April 2010 to $25.4 million this April and table games revenues jumped from $4.3 million in August 2010 to $14.7 million this August,” said Robert DeSalvio, President of the Sands Casino, to The Express Times. Officials have been very clear that nothing is definite, however, many plans have already been proposed. The expansion has been said to create more game tables, and may even establish a second hotel. Because many people in Bethlehem visit the Sands not only for the casino, but shopping as well, a few more

stores will also be added to the name-brand outlet located next to the casino. “Citing success with both its hotel and Photo: Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem Tumblr events center and the ArtsQuest Center at Steel- is easy to spot. every day because of it. Victims of bullying tend to be more on the shy side and

physically weaker than other peers. Low self-esteem may also be a factor because it makes it hard for them to stand up for themselves. Suicide is what many teens look to as a way to escape harassment. On Sept. 10, Rebecca Sedwick, a seventh grader from Central Florida, took her own life after being verbally, physically, and cyber bullied by 2 girls for nearly a year. The 2 girls who were said to be responsible for Sedwick’s death were ages 12 and 14; one was also said to be Sedwick’s former best friend.

Both girls had admitted to bullying before Sedwick committed suicide. The girls were arrested and charged with aggravated stalking which is a third degree felony, and they will be put through the juvenile court system. Overall, Sedwick was said to be bullied by as many as 15 girls. Bullying is no laughing matter; words hurt and no one deserves to be treated anything less than equal. Principal’s Message Reflections, thanks, and wishes Michael LaPorta, Principal Special to The Freedom Forum

As we approach our Thanksgiving holiday season, I feel compelled to reflect upon why I feel so thankful. There are many reasons why I feel so thankful and blessed to be where I am today. I will focus upon the following four: health, family, our school, and opportunity. Over the past year, I have had the misfortune of losing two people in my life to the cruelness of cancer. As I reflect upon these losses, my thoughts immediately go to those staff members and stu-

dents who have also lost loved ones or who are battling their own health issues. These struggles are difficult and life changing. Our health is what we really need to be thankful for more than anything else. Therefore, my “healthy” Thanksgiving wish to everyone is to take care of yourselves and continued good health to all. My family is the second reason I feel so thankful. I can honestly say that for everything that I have worked for and accomplished in my life, my family has been behind me as the driving force toward my successes. They have celebrated successes and supported me in times where things did not go as I had hoped. It is my family

who has helped forge my character and helped me become who I am today. My Thanksgiving wish for all is to enjoy your family during this holiday season. Our school, “Freedom Family,” is the third reason for my thankfulness. Over the past nine years, Freedom High School has made me so incredibly proud. Our school has worked hard to achieve academically. We have celebrated awards and championships. We have raised large amounts of money and given to the less fortunate. We have put smiles on the faces of those people who were in need of that special smile at that one moment in time. My Thanksgiving wish for Freedom Family is to continue

your focus and find yet another way to exhibit the leadership that you all possess. Last, I am thankful for the opportunity that we have as citizens in the greatest city, school district and country in the world today. Those who have sacrificed for each and every one of us present these opportunities. When you have the opportunity to be with a serviceman or women, please remember to say thank Mr. Michael LaPorta you. Remember, it is their Photo courtesy of Christmas City Studio sacrifices that allow us to have what do today. My Thanksgiving holiday. Thanking FHS for a job well done Dear Freedom Family, WOW!! Pretty much sums up our feelings about the football game [FHS faculty vs LHS faculty for Race for Adam]. We were blown away by the support of both the faculty and students at both schools. Both football teams and students engaged Adam as if he was part of their family. How amazing was that? Then, Adam got to run for a touchdown; his smile will be ever engraved into many hearts after that run. We will be ever grateful to

you for helping us raise awareness for such a horrible disease. Niemann-Pick Type C (also called Childhood Alzheimer's) only affects 150 people in the U.S. and 500 worldwide. For any disease to be considered "rare" in the U.S. it would have to affect less than 200,000 people. So NPC is more of an ultra rare disease. We are funding some really great research with three other families in the U.S. and raising more than $500,000 a year for research. Our researchers meet with us 3 to 4

times a year and are fighting to save our children and all the children fighting NPC. With their help, we have gotten a clinical trial started for a promising compound called Cyclodextrin. Adam will be Adam Recke at the game. part of this Photo: Samantha Lutz trial.

Without the help of people such as yourself this would not be happening. We are forever thankful to all the hard work and effort that you [Mr. Stellato] put in as well as the students, faculty and staff who made the flag football game a huge suc-

cess. Bringing Freedom and Liberty together has an everlasting focus on the good that Bethlehem Area School District can be in the community. We are proud to be part of this great community and people who care about each other as much as you do! This event will hopefully have a lasting impression on the Bethlehem community and the Race For Adam Foundation. Thank you so much! The Recke Family

Government shutdown: what is it? By Noah Gonzalez News Editor

A federal government shutdown is when the government does not have the legal authority to spend money. Recently, government shutdowns have not been frequent. Since 1977, there have been 17 shutdowns. The last shutdown to occur in the United States was from Nov. 1995 to Jan. 1996. Basically, shutdowns occur when Congress cannot

agreed on a spending bill, a law that addresses federal spending. The 2013 shutdown lasted from Oct. 1 to Oct. 17. It was initiated when the Republicans in Congress did not agree with the bill pertaining to the budget implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, the Democrats believed the program should be fully

funded. The government shutdown affected any institution or person that was employed by

the national government, with the exception of necessary jobs such as national safety. 800,000 people were put on furlough, or temporary leave, from their jobs. Thousands of neccesary federal employees worked without pay. The federal government was reopened on Thursday Oct. 17, 2013, when President Obama signed a bill to raise the debt limit and to pay the federal employees that were efPhoto: NY Daily News

fected from the shutdown. The shutdown lasted a total of sixteen days. To resolve the government shutdown, Congress finally agreed on a spending bill by passing a continuing resolution that maintains spending for all of the fiscal year.

Bullied students speak their minds By Gavin Johnson The Freedom Forum

Earlier this year, a young high school student at Liberty High School, Ashley McIntyre, committed suicide. At only 16-years-old, McIntyre hung herself in her family barn. Her parents believe bullying was involved as reported by 59 News. Bullying is a problem that increases every year at schools. According to DoSomething.org, over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. “I have been bullied my whole life,” said Brittany Hogg, a freshman at Freedom High School, who has been bullied because of her sexu-

ality. Many of us overlook the problems of bullying. Not many of us would think that our friend or someone we know is often a victim of bullying. “I’ve been bullied [for] how I look,” said Teresa Harding, senior. According to DoSomething.org, approximately 160,000 students skip school every day because of bullying. One out of 10 students drop out of school entirely. “Bullying is as healthy as the cafeteria food,” said Billy Parker, freshman. The simple truth is that bullying is not good for anyone. It is a 2-way street of nega-

tivity. Both the victim and the bully are affected. “It shows a person who’s

highly immature. It’s a conflict that doesn’t need to occur,” said Grant Stives, freshman.

Bullying is not just emotional; it can be physical in many aspects. The saddest part about bullying is the loss of a life, not by the one who is bullying but by the victim. “I think bullying is very wrong, and it makes the person depressed, which will cause suicidal thoughts,” said Nick Fresoli, freshman . According to Do Something.org, about 71 percent of reported bullying has occurred in schools. Physical bullying has increased in elementary schools; however, it tends to decline in high schools. The big question after all of this is, if everyone is against bullying, then why is it such a huge problem in our society?

“I’ve been bullied all through elementary school, even including through now, including a couple of my friends. Sometimes people don’t know that they are a bully until you tell them,” said a student, who would only speak on the basis of anonymity. Being bullied is not a secret that you should lock up and forget about. If you are, or know someone who is getting bullied you should use the schools resources to help you. Contact your guidance counselor immediately. Bullying is an easy problem to solve. Its main cure is awareness. Freedom is a hate free zone, so let’s keep it that way.

Selling tests to get rich quick How the test taking market is a huge student money tree By Jack Ogozaly Editorials Editor

If you could go back in time and change something what would you do? Some might go back and invest in young companies such as Apple. Others might actually go back and cause monumental changes to the present. But what if I told you that going back in time and founding the College Board first would land you a nice

$600,000 salary? Many students have a sort of hatred of the College Board. After all, the College Board gives us the PSATs, SATs, and the tests we all love: the AP exams. “Sometimes it feels like the College Board is just a big money making business, instead of having the students best interest at heart,” said Abdullah Jafar, sophomore. It cannot be denied that the

college board is sitting on a huge student gold mine. If you do not believe it then go to Barnes & Nobles and look down the whole isle they have just for College Board tests. “It is ridiculous how they almost make the tests to force you to buy their products. They make the test and they force you to pay to get the grade you want,” said Abigail Burnett, sophomore. Students want a competitive edge. After all we are all competing against each other when it comes down to it.

College admissions provide a cut throat competition for an all too willing student body. But the College Board is not the only company that makes money off of students. Huntington, an SAT tutoring center, will dig deep into your wallet in exchange for the score of your dreams. In the end, is it all worth it? Photo: Jack Ogozaly:

How honest Abe has GTG Investing money in our futures By Jack Ogozaly Editorials Editor

I hate pennies. Out of everything to hate, it seems like a minor issue, until you learn more about the penny. The most obvious issue with the penny is that they are worth 1 cent, but each penny cost 1.7 cents to make. This means that every year 70 million dollars is spent to subsidize the existence of the penny.

Photo: coincollectingenterprises.com

To call the penny worthless is an exaggeration since the

definition of worthless is “without worth; of no use, importance, or value.” according to Webster dictionary. Since a penny is worth negative money, it is worse than worthless; it is just flat out pointless. So why then do we still have pennies? The simple answer is that people don’t like change, especially when it might save the government money. “People resist change. It’s amazing how progress is so easily slowed down by those

who want to live in the past.”, said Abigail Burnett, a sophomore at Freedom High School. Pennies are not the only problem with American currency. Nickels cost 9 cents to make and are only worth 5 cents. How many people do you know who use pennies? The answer is not many since vending machines, parking meters, toll booths, and Laundromats all do not accept pennies. The dollar bill seems like a

good idea until you realize that a dollar coin makes more sense. This is because the average dollar bill is in circulation for 40 months, while the average dollar coin is in circulation for 30 years. “Coins just make more sense when it comes to long term economics,” said Abdullah Jafar, sophomore. Although getting rid of dollar bills, pennies, and nickels is a huge idea, it is the only logical solution to take when you want to balance a budg-

Is social media making us smarter or less intelligent? Social media’s good and bad qualities and how it effects us By Amy Rissmiller Journalism Student

Social media can be very dangerous for the simple reason that people can find your personal information, and that could lead to very bad things happening, as you can imagine. Media has its positive and negative qualities. People generally think social media is good. When we use social

media, we feel we are engaging with people, but really, is this “socializing”? We are already doing tasks on the Internet, so why not socialize using various media? Using social media can help us contact people more quickly and easily. However, socializing like this can be considered a crutch used instead of going out and socializing with “live” people. Also, some say social media

Photo: Creative Commons

can be addicting because you are always checking your “feed” to see if someone is communicating with you. So

is social media benefiting us? I think social media is making us less intelligent because we are making ourselves lazy and less knowledgeable by using various types of “quick answer” tools. Some would say various types of media are making us smarter by allowing us to research quickly, but does this make us more intelligent? A couple years ago, before media and electronics, we had to use research books to get information. Now we just

look up something on the internet in a quick minute. Because of this “easy access” we don’t get the full picture of what we are researchingmaking us less educated on a subject. In most cases it depends on the individual using the technology and how they are using it. Everyone has an opinion on whether social media is making us smarter or not, in the end it is a question each one of us must look into to answer.

Cyber Schools vs. Public Schools Cyber schools and public schools: sacrifice flexibility or social aspect? By Nicole Rissmiller Journalism Student

There has been a debate going on for years now on whether cyber schools are better than traditional public schools. The biggest difference between the 2 is that cyber school takes place only on a computer when traditional public schools take place in a classroom. Which schooling

method you prefer depends on your personal preferences. “Cyber school is nice because it is flexible,” said Kelly Donah, a freshman at Freedom High School. This makes sense because some positives of cyber schools are that you have class right in your own home, you can have class whenever you want as long as you complete assignments, and if

you are sick or there is a snow day, you can still have class. This is unlike a regular classroom where you have class for a specific number of hours per day per week. I have never attended a cyber school, but it is my belief that the costs outweigh the benefits. I would not like to be cooped up in my house all day having to do all my schoolwork on a computer. I think cyber school takes away from the traditional experience and does not allow being in a public school

environment to teach you about how the world works such as how to handle certain social situations and making friends. “I didn’t like being on a computer all day, I missed the social aspect that a regular classroom gives you,” said Zaynah Jones, freshman. If you enjoy being by yourself, cyber school would be okay for you, but there comes a time in everyone’s life when he or she needs to learn how to function in the real world. I think attending a

cyber school robs students of what traditional public schools give them in that regard.

Attack of the “sneakerheads”

What is all the craze? By Alexa Reich The Freedom Forum

It’s no secret that shoes are a big part of someone’s look; shoes can either make or break your outfit. Most people associate shoe obsessions with girls, but they’re more popular with boys now than ever. Shoes have become a serious phenomenon. People buy them, sell them and trade them. But what’s the big deal? “Shoes are an expression of my personality and who I am,” said Ben Reich of Bethlehem, PA.

Reich is a shoe collector and says that shoes are stylish and are the best way to complete an outfit. Shoes to boys are similar to what a new outfit is to a girl. Each day you wear a new, different pair, and you get a feeling of excitement to show them off. The type of shoes that people wear will separate them from the rest of the crowd. Shoes help give one his or her individuality. The most popular types of shoes are Air Jordans and Foamposites. Shoes like these can range from one

hundred dollars to thousands or more. Prices like these seem ridiculous but not to serious shoe collectors. They will do anything they can to come up with the money to buy a shoe they love. “I’m always thinking of ways to save up my money for shoes,” said Reich. Reich is one that sets almost all of his money aside to buy the coolest new shoe that everyone wants. Some people may wonder where you can even buy shoes like these. The most common place Reich searches for new shoes is eBay. He may look online everyday for a deal on a shoe he is interested in because certain types

Sometimes you can only pack on so much. “I try to focus on academics first and extracurricular activities second that way I can get my priorities straight”. That is what we all need to do. Sometimes students be-

come over-involved and then instead of being efficient in a few things and succeed at them, students find it “better” to get involved in 56 clubs plus all honors and a sport. This is where it starts to get funky. You start to lack in one area and that brings you down. Christiansen, knows how to categorize his priorities. Dear Fyniss, A lot of my friends are getting into a lot of things like alcohol and drugs. Every time I bring it up, they usually call me a “wimp” and say that I’m not living. I don’t know what I should do or say to them without my friends getting offended. Can you please give me some ways to help them out and steer away from these things? Sincerely, Trying to Help Dear Trying to Help, I’m so sorry that you have been put into this predicament, and I understand your concern about your friends. I also understand that you don’t want to give up on your friends either, but you don’t want to look as though you are condoning their decisions. There is a really good program that I feel would help your friends. Student Assistance Programs (SAP) is a program offered for everyone at Freedom; it is a comprehensive campaign to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among our stu-

dents. The main purpose for SAP is to help students who may have a possible drug and/ or alcohol problem to be referred to a proper community agency for assessment and treatment. SAP is also anonymous, so none of your friends will know you “SAPped” them. If you're feeling as though you may not want to be the person to do it, you could also ask a teacher to fill out the form for you and submit it. I truly believe that if this doesn’t help, you may want to reconsider your friendship with these people. It may be tough, but you don’t want to be associated with this because it is a bad look. Sometimes it is better to let something go than to keep it. Sincerely, Fyniss Frazier

Meddling in the media The fine line of privacy By Caitlin McCadden The Freedom Forum

Do school administrators and teachers have the right to monitor the social media activity of their students? This question has become a growing concern for high school students in our society which relies so much on technology and staying connected. College admissions counselors now regularly take the time to check the social sites of students who are candidates for their school. Teachers like to stay updated on what their students may be doing, whether it is a home-

work assignment or partying. Additionally, coaches now keep a close eye on their athletes through Facebook, Twitter, etc. There is both an upside and downside to administrators monitoring their students. Used responsibly sites like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram allow friends and family to stay connected but at the same time they open wide opportunities to allow not only cyber bullying to strike anywhere, anytime, and students to make inappropriate posts that could get them into a lot of trouble. “Personally I don’t get involved, and we have been recommended to stay away from students’ sites. I don’t

tweet or Facebook because I believe there should be a separation between teacher and student,” said Mr. Longacre, a guidance counselor. “It’s definitely a violation of privacy because what we do on our free time has nothing to do with what we do in school,” said Hannah McMullan, junior. Although some may agree with the opinions of Longacre and McMullan, many people make the argument that if students are giving out info such as their sites or posting the inappropriate comments, they are more to blame then the administrator scolding them for it. Social media is a two way street. If students feel the need to use

vulgar language or tasteless pictures to get their point across instead of a dignified,

well-mannered disposition, than maybe they should be monitored for their own good. These adults are just looking out for the better of students. But there is a line that

could be crossed when they are constantly checking up on their pupils. Teachers, coaches and administrators who use social media sites as means to check up on students need to understand that students need space to express themselves in an environment they feel comfortable in, which most likely does not include them. The spread of social media has made it easier to access people’s private life in the touch of a button. Websites like Facebook and Twitter have begun to cause controversy in schools.

“The Voice” vs. “The X Factor” Which is better? By Brittany Weaver Journalism student

“The Voice” and “The X Factor” both take part in the growing list of singing competitions. They compete head and head when it comes to high rating shows. Viewers unofficial commentary are acting as votes for the better show and imitating a tug of war contest. “’The X Factor’ is more entertaining because each judge gets a different category of people,” said Loren Miller, junior. “I like the blind auditions for ‘The Voice.’ It gives an

edge to the show,” said Tori Posivak, senior. “The Voice” begins has a blind audition allowing the

contestants to show their talents through their voice and not their looks. Instead, they are judged by what their voice brings to the stage.

The judges face the audience during the blind audition. They will determine whether or not they will turn around by the sound of the contestants voice and the reactions of the audience watching. If they turn around, they will mentor the contestant throughout the remainder of the season. If more than one judge spins their chair around while the contestant is auditioning, the contestant will have the option to choose which judge they would like to team up with. Winners receive a record deal with Universal Music Group.

“The X Factor” is open to solo singers, duos and groups, while “The Voice” is open to only solo singers and duos.

Lastly, they will audition in front of the judges in hope of making it onto the show. “The X Factor” on the other hand automatically puts the contestants who have made it past the audition in categorized groups. Winners of “The X Factor” receive a recording contract with record label Syco Music.

“Captain Phillips” hijacking theaters everywhere A phenomenal movie based on a true story By Chris Cooke Journalism student

Will the movie “Captain Phillips” float to the top? Or be lost at sea. “Captain Phillips” is an intense movie about the true story of Captain Richard Phillips starring Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips, Barkhad Abdi as Muse the pirate, Max Martini as the Seal Commander. The movie starts off as Captain Richard Phillips and his wife Andrea Phillips drive to the Maersk Alabama the cargo ship where Phillips will set off to deliver supplies. After Captain Phillips and Shane map out the route they will take, they set off on the journey where they sail

across the Somali waters. Two unidentified boats approach Captain Phillip’s ship. Knowing that pirate attacks could happen in the Somali waters, Phillips had an emergency drill take place the day before. In a tense scene, the two boats with Somali pirates on board hijack the cargo ship. Skinny, also known as Muse, the leader of the pirates searches the whole cargo ship looking for the other crew. When Captain Phillips begins to become nervous, Muse then continually tells Captain Phillips that everything will be okay. As the movie progresses with impressive intensity the fight for survival becomes real. Will the Somali pirates be successful with hijacking

the cargo ship? Will Captain Phillips lead his crew to victory, or be lost at sea?

Photo imdb.com

In the movie “Captain Phillips” the acting was superb throughout the movie. Paul

Greengrass was able to keep the same amount of intensity from the beginning of the movie to the very end. The movie had great direction along with its screenplay. Greengrass’s impressive use of shaky camera effects, make the action scenes stand out. Costume design is another area of “Captain Phillips” that really shined, the costumes accurately portrayed the Somali pirates. The set design of the movie made the experience much more realistic with minimal use of CGI. The soundtrack of the movie makes your heart race in the most dramatic of scenes. “Once I heard that “Captain Phillips” was based on a true story it made it so much more enjoyable for me. The events that happened felt more intense because it was

true.” said Jonathan Fiorentino, a freshman at Freedom High school. My only complaint for the movie is its accuracy. Crew members from the actual event say that “Captain Phillips” might be exaggerated a little too much I still highly recommend seeing “Captain Phillips” though due to the fact that is an overall impressive movie. I give “Captain Phillips” 8.5 stars out of 10. With its well done costume design, superb acting, praised photography, and screenplay. This is a must see for the advocate moviegoer.

Taking costumes too far? Halloween fun turned into scandal By Logan Handwerk Pates’ Post Editor

So, what is trending? Well, a huge controversy that hit social media on Oct. 31 is a costume that came off as insensitive and disrespectful. Alicia Ann Lynch, a 22year-old from Michigan, posted this picture of herself dressed as a Boston Marathon bombing victim. Within hours, the image had gone completely viral; it opened her up to ridicule and harassment.

The picture posted by Lynch that started the controversy. Photo: someDKANKinMI, Twitter

Soon, she was receiving death-threats in the mail and her parents were being har-

assed. She closed down her twitter account, but then reopened it within a few days to post a public apology, adding that she was fired from her job and is paying for her mistake. Lynch insists that the outfit was not meant to disrespect anyone. She says that she was just trying to fit into the day of the dead theme. Not only was this picture circulating, but other more intimate ones that were found on her Tumblr blog. This information is readily available to any employer she may have, her children in the future, and all possible romantic partners.

This issue brings up the constant question of oversharing. Had Lynch not posted the photo, she would still be employed and continue on to have a normal life. The real question here is, does she deserve this? Of course, the costume was insensitive, but does that mean she should have to live with that forever? Nobody is perfect, and it is important that everyone remembers that when they attack others. With just a simple Google search of her name, one can find her address, phone number, and hundreds of hate messages. In today’s society, it is vital

that one thinks before he or she acts. With modern technologies and the ability to communicate with a touch of a button, the smallest thing can become a major news story within hours. It also shows that in modern America society can be extremely cruel. Just because of a little mistake she made, Lynch and her parents’ lives were threatened, and she became a social outcast. Always keep in mind the oldest saying in the book, “treat others as you would like to be treated.”

The king of cable drama returns The fourth season of “The Walking Dead” By Mitchell Coriell Sports Editor

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” has begun it’s fourth season with new episodes every Sunday. The nation’s most watched basic-cable TV show “The Walking Dead” is now in it’s fourth season. Rick Grimes, formerly known as Andrew Lincoln, is no longer a leader. The leadership at the pris-

on, which the characters use currently as sanctuary, is now put into a council. In the fourth season, we see the prison turn from a chaosfilled trap in the third season, to a growing community, filled with crops and livestock. “The Walking Dead” has grown greatly into it’s drama elements, bringing more little kids involved and stronger bonds between the characters. “I like the character development, it’s make it so much

more interesting,” said Jason Legayada, sophomore. “The Walking Dead” has been a hit ever since its’ first season, with 5.3 million to watch it’s pilot. The channel the show is on, AMC, has also brought us “Breaking Bad” and “Mad Men.” The show has had a lot to compete with, but still has come on top with the most watched show on AMC, and continued to be the most viewed drama on basic cable. “The show is intense, pulse pounding and ultimately fun

to watch. Who doesn’t like zombies,” said Mikey Mele, sophomore. One of the immediate attractions to the show is that it is a continuous zombie flick. Second, is that it is a very intense drama. The show is created by Frank Darabont; director of “The Shawshank Redemption.” “The Walking Dead” is

loosely based off of the comic book series of the same name. The show does have different characters and different chronological order of events however. The writes still have many villains and major death and events to work with from the comic books. There is still plenty more to come this season.

“Ravenswood” hits televisions

A spin-off show of "Pretty Little Liars" aired on Oct. 22, 2013 and has people off their seats. With new cast members and outstanding episodes, “Ravenswood” continues the trend of mystery and suspense to keep their fans coming back for more. “’Ravenswood’” will never

be better than ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ said Shauna Smith, sophomore. “It's hard to compare the two shows,” said Mikaela Mendez, freshman. It starts out with Caleb going to help his girlfriend, Hannah, at Ravenswood, but instead Hannah wanted Caleb to help Miranda settle in. They arrived at Ravenswood to find Miranda's uncle,

her only family member still alive but they ran into a tombstone with their heads and name on it. They were not getting on another bus to Rosewood without finding out why. The Ravenswood curse must be solved. “I kind of want to watch the rest, although it was scary,” said Smith. Yet, Elyse Sanford, sopho-

Crushing the competition Candy Crush has taken over the app department By Zachary Wright Journalism student

“Candy Crush is addictive because it’s equal parts pain and fun and fits consumers’ short attention span,” said Sabastian Knuttson, according to reuters.com. Knuttson is the Chief Creative Officer of King, the developer of Candy Crush. Candy Crush is a game where players match 3 pieces of candy in a row, similar to Bejeweled. The app can be

downloaded on Facebook, iPhone, iPad, and Google Play Market. Candy Crush Saga has a life system involved in it, where you get a maximum of five lives. If a level is failed one life is lost. Players get new lives every thirty minutes. There are also “special candies.” Special candies are made when the candies are matched in special ways, such as four in a row, 5 in a row, a “T” shape or an “L”

Eminem makes a comeback Shady is back By Julia Gialanella The Freedom Forum

Released on November 5th, Eminem’s new album “Marshall Mathers LP 2” is easing the nostalgia of many fans. Despite Eminem’s three year absence from the music industry, the album still made the top 10 albums on iTunes. The album opens up with the chilling song “Bad Guy”, which is part 2 of the 1999 single “Stan”, where Eminem

deals with a crazy, suicidal, obsessed fan. In “Bad Guy”, we hear Stan’s younger brother, Matthew’s point of view. Matthew goes after Eminem for causing his brother’s suicide. Eminem explains the song in a bit more depth by saying, “Matthew and Stan’s just symbolic of you not knowing what you

had until it’s gone.” The song is a bit creepy and hard to follow, but definitely sets the scene for the rest of the album. “My favorite song on the album is “Rhyme Or Reason” because Eminem gets really personal about his past and it’s the only emoPhoto imdb.com

tional song on the album,” said David Gialanella. On “Marshall Mathers LP 2,” Eminem collaborated with many artists such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and Fun. He incorporated many throwback songs from the 80’s and even classic Motown that bled through the background of songs such as “Berzerk” and “Rhyme Or Reason.” Although this is not his best album, it stands out because it is not dedicated to one sin-

gle meaning like Recovery and Relapse were. The first “Marshall Mathers LP” was what made Eminem notorious, so it seems that the 41year-old rapper still wants to remain relevant and gain his notoriety back with a sequel. It is apparent that Eminem will always be known as a legendary artist and a name that is familiar to all ages.

A musical within a comedy: “The Drowsy Chaperone” By Brittany Weaver Journalism student

Freedom High School’s Theatre Company (FHSTC) loses control to bring a bold and jaw dropping rendition of “The Drowsy Chaperone.” The musical comedy, directed by Ms. Jennifer Wescoe, included a small cast of 14 students. The main idea of the comedy is that The Man in Chair

(Andy Moeller) listens to his favorite recording of a fictional musical comedy known as “The Drowsy Chaperone.” As he listens to the recording, he is transported into the musical. Thus, comes the idea of a musical within a musical. The characters in their glamorous outfits begin to appear in his apartment. Janet van de Graaf (Hannah Arnold) is a woman wanted by

many for her attractive looks and outgoing personality. Her mind is in a knot from her undecided choice of giving up her life on stage to marry Robert Martin (Daniel Youngelman). The Drowsy Chaperone (Victoria Scovens) plays the role of a careless diva who most of the time is under the influence. Making the attempt to always be under the spotlight, The Drowsy Chap-

erone tries to sneak her way into making every scene her own. The musical filled the audience with complete humor during every joke. Mentioning the audience reactions, faces in the crowd showed awe and amazement at the spectacular and phenomenal singing of the actors. Additionally, the costumes and the set design were of such great detail and could

not have topped the play off in a better way. “The FHSTC did an excellent job in performing the musical ‘The Drowsy Chaperone,’” said Ariel Huertas, junior. The FHSTC has again set the bar high. After the long nights and hard working rehearsals, the FHSTC cast members made it all happen and delighted the audience.

What to expect this NBA season Pro-basketball predictions By Chase Hoover Sports Editor

With the rings from the 2012-2013 season being given to the defending champions Miami Heat the NBA season was under way. There are many questions yet to be answered around the NBA such as how will Brooklyn's highly paid veterans shape out. This was unarguably the biggest change in the NBA

this off season pushing Brooklyn to the next tier of teams, with all five starters at one point in their careers averaged over 20 points per game. “I can’t wait to see Dwight Howards impact on the Rockets and how they stack in the West,” said Chris Fereno, sophomore. There are the newly shaped Rockets in the West who have brought in Dwight Howard, one of the best centers in the league to help them fight for the champion-

ship. But, can the Spurs talented roster stay healthy and

productive throughout the long 82 game season and will Doc Rivers Clippers change Lob City into a defensive first team? How will the Lakers do with Kobe Bryant? “I think the Heat have a great chance at a three peat this year. Lebron is going to win MVP for sure,” said Joe Rodgers, Paul George defending James Harden. sophomore. Fans around the Photo: Corbis Images world will be watch-

ing this year's NBA season as the excitement continues to build. Will LeBron James and the big three keep the Heat's dominance or will Derrick Rose's return to Chicago push them ahead of the Heat? Will Danny Granger and Paul George lead the talented Pacers to the Finals or will they fall short yet again? Prediction—The Bulls will win the East followed by the Heat, and the Spurs will win the West followed by the Thunder and Rockets.

Boston goes onto win World Series The Red Sox win the 2013 World Series By Leonardo Martinez Journalism student

Behind a professional bearded team a city that loves to see them play at the famous Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox are World Champions for the 8th time. “Words cannot describe how I feel,” said Red Sox fan Sam D’Arrigo, “This is what being a Boston fan is all

about.” The team that finished with the worst record in the American League East a year before, completed their goal of a World Championship on Wednesday, October 30th. Every move that the Red Sox completed during the off and regular season seemed to help contribute to the team’s eventual success. Whether it was Napoli’s power, or everything Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia did for the team it worked. When the Red Sox signed

Shane Victorino, the Sox had a feeling that he could turn this team around. Victorino did just that. But this World Series belonged to the ageless David Ortiz a.k.a :”Big Papi.” He batted .688 this World Series and reached base 19 out of 25 plate appearances. He is currently holding a record for 2nd highest World Series batting average with .688, behind Billy Hatcher, with a .750 batting average. There was no surprise that David Ortiz won World Se-

Patriots fall to the Hurricanes

The annual rivalry game ends in defeat By Connor Acevedo Journalism student

Freedom Patriots versus the Liberty Hurricane--a game that completely filled the stadium and drew the attention of many people. The festivities before the game involved all 6 Bethlehem Area School District bands; the 2 high school,

Freedom and Liberty, and the 4 middle schools, East Hills, Northeast, Nitschmann, and Broughal. They all marched on the field together performed the National Anthem and then the alma maters for Freedom and Liberty. When the game finally started, Freedom got the ball first, and by the end of the

first quarter the score was tied zero to zero with Freedom using one timeout. In the beginning of the second quarter, Liberty got the first touchdown, but the field goal it was blocked. In the second quarter, Freedom got their first touchdown and made their field goal attempt. Soon after though, Liberty got another touchdown wrapping up the

second quarter. During halftime both of the high school bands went out on the field and did a good job with their performances. Liberty really wanted to make their halftime show the best, so they added fireworks while the band was still playing. As the third quarter began, Liberty only a few minutes to score another touchdown

making the score 25 to 7. During the fourth quarter, neither team scored a touchdown, but both teams played very hard and put all their effort into this game. The game ended with the score Liberty, 25 and Freedom, 7.
