Dear Parents to be: Thank you for choosing CHI Franciscan Health for this momentous life event. We are honored to share in the preparation and birth of your child and hope you leave feeling confident in your new role. As you prepare to welcome a new member into your family, we are also excited to welcome you into our family. There is much to learn, and we’re here to help however we can. There is no right or wrong order in which to take these classes. Based on our experience, it makes sense to take a majority of these classes during the second trimester, when you generally have the most time and energy. We know there are many decisions to make during this time. Bringing your baby into this world can be exhilarating. Our goal for you is to enjoy the journey! Tours Most locations offer free tours for women and their families to learn about our approach to childbirth. Meet some of our staff, ask questions and tour our birth center. The tours are educational, highlight birth center amenities and provide specific information for your delivery. Learn when to come to the hospital, where to park, where to enter and more details about your anticipated stay. The tours are guided by family birth center staff or educators and take between 30-90 minutes depending on the facility. FREE

Midwifery Birth Center at St. Joseph Orientation This class is required for Midwifery Birth Center patients. To register, students must be an established patient of a midwife who practices at the Midwifery Birth Center, who has confirmed the patient meets the low risk criteria. Take the class between 30–35 weeks of pregnancy. Class covers what to expect if you plan to deliver at the Midwifery Birth Center at St. Joseph. Orientation covers comfort for labor, postpartum care of mother and baby, and required follow-up for both.
Tools for a Better Birth Taught by trained and experienced childbirth educators/doulas. This class is devoted to handson practice of techniques, strategies, and tools that increase comfort for labor and birth. You will find this class beneficial even if you are planning to use medications in labor. Class focus is on practical skills that everyone can use!
Childbirth Preparation This class is devoted to increasing your understanding of labor and birth. Each of our childbirth class series provides you and a companion with information regarding labor and delivery, breath awareness, positions for labor, comfort measures, the use of medications, cesarean and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), and touches on breastfeeding and newborns. Offered in four-week and one-day formats. Classes that meet for less time offer similar material in a condensed manner. Whether you anticipate use of medications or not, you will appreciate the variety of information offered in these educational and creative classes. Our staff consists of qualified and experienced professionals who are intimately familiar with each of our birth centers. All childbirth preparation classes include a guided tour of our birth center. Preparación para el parto (en Español) Esta clase está dedicada a aumentar su comprensión del trabajo de parto y el parto. Teen Childbirth Preparation This class is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of expectant teens. Topics covered include healthy prenatal practices, labor and delivery, labor coping techniques, the use of medications, cesarean birth, vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), breastfeeding and newborns. This class series also covers material related to developing healthy self-esteem, diet and exercise, and parenting skills. FREE with Provider One/ DSHS/ WA State Pregnancy Medical.
Especially Yours We offer a three-hour, private childbirth preparation class for the expectant mother and her companion. Registered students personally select class content and arrange the date, time and location which best suits their schedule. One-on-one instruction includes use of audiovisual aids commonly found in a typical childbirth class setting. Personal tours of the family birth center are also available.

Online Childbirth Preparation Ideal for the busy 21st century parent, this option is well suited for families with limited flexibility to attend classes in person. Quality, evidence-based material within a simple and easy-to-use online interface. Content includes instructive videos, interactive activities, and access to handouts. Class duration is typically four to six hours.
Balance After Birth Postpartum Support Groups The first weeks and months with a new baby can be a time of great change. Even when all is going well, many families benefit from additional support. In collaboration with Postpartum Support International, these drop-in support groups provide a welcoming, non-judgmental space for new parents to talk about the emotional changes and challenges of parenthood. Soon-to-be moms, new moms or seasoned moms are all welcome! FREE See locations online
Safe Sitter® Better sitters today...better parents tomorrow. Safe Sitter® is an innovative, medically accurate babysitter training program designed to prepare adolescents to handle minor and major emergencies. Child safety and child care skills are the focus of this one-day class. Students must pass a test in order to fulfill the course requirements. This class is designed for 11-13 year olds. Waterbirth Basics This online class is required for patients interested in delivering in water at St. Joseph Medical Center and should be completed before 36 weeks of pregnancy. Written class content explores the risks and potential benefits of delivering in the water. Patients interested in this birthing option are strongly encouraged to participate in a Childbirth Preparation class at St. Joseph Medical Center which also includes a tour of the family birth center. One Stop Package* Designed for those who care to spend a weekend day preparing for their baby’s homecoming, this one-day offering is specially priced and includes Breastfeeding Preparation, Newborn Preparation and CPR/lnfant Safety. All three classes must be taken on the same day. Breastfeeding Preparation Although breastfeeding is considered nature’s way, many mothers find these classes very beneficial. Class topics include the basics of breastfeeding, initiation of breastfeeding, how to get breastfeeding off to the best start, positioning options, how to know your baby is feeding well, preventing common problems, and how to access breastfeeding help after you leave the hospital. Newborn Preparation Preparation for care of your newborn baby can help alleviate concerns and instill a greater sense of confidence in your intuition and parenting ability. This one-time class includes topics such as care for mom and baby, car seats, immunizations, diapering and bathing, helpful hints for adjusting to new roles, and health and safety issues. Infant CPR and Safety This course teaches CPR and relief of choking skills for infants and children. Safety strategies for the home, car, and while sleeping, are also presented. A CPR certificate/card is not issued for this class.
