Before end-of-the-semester concerts are arranged, Foothill’s choirs prepare holiday music to perform at Carols by Candlelight, a Christmas-filled evening of holiday desserts and music. Set for December 17, solo artists sing alongside the choirs throughout the night. In January, the choirs will come together for their annual winter concert to present a variety of music from many backgrounds and languages. Chamber choir, the advanced, audition-only group on campus, performs their holiday repertoire at business events and parties outside of school, beginning in December. DANIEL DOWNEY staff reporter The fall season is a time of year that many look forward to. Halloween and thanksgiving are two holidays during this season, and many are excited to spend time with their families. Another annual event that happens that people look forward to of course is the fall play, an event where aspiring actors band together to demonstrate their skills, and students and parents alike gather together to watch. This year was ,of course, was no different in Foothill High School’s

schedule filled with concerts and competitions. They will be going on tour to Southern California in March to sing and enjoy a long weekend at Disneyland. Chamber Choir singers Travis Furr (‘15) and Cianna Kim (‘15) speak for the group when they say that the tour will be the highlight of next semester. Furr says, “I’m really excited for the Disneyland trip. I haven’t been to Disneyland in a long time.” Kim agrees, “it’s something that the kids can look forward to, simply because as high schoolers we are so caught up in school work and stress. This gives a bit of a break from that. Plus, it’s Disneyland!” Chamber choir will production of Rhinoceros, a play set in a small town in pre World War II France that faces much confusion as members of the tiny community start turning into rhinoceroses. The play belongs to a school of drama knowns as “Theatre of the Absurd,” which truly makes sense after watching the production. Throughout the entire play, the characters take the audience on a journey to the truly ridiculous, which invites laughter and confused looking expressions from all members of the audience. The production is just as enjoyable to the cast as it is to the audience. Senior Yuvraj Singh (‘15) tried acting for the first time this year in his ever first Foothill production. Singh said that the experience was “incredibly fun,” and that the entire process was “very rewarding.” The fall play is traditionally a lower cost production then the bigger spring musical that happens later in the year. There are many reasons why this happens, but this is mostly because Amador and Foothill students share the stage in the musical, and often attract a bigger audience. A low budget does not impact the quality of the play however. Performers like Burcu Birol (‘15) captivated the audience throughout the entire play, and made it extremely enjoyable to watch. The play would of course not be possible without the guidance of drama teacher Dax Treible who has taught the drama class since taking over in the 20112012 school year . Rhinoceroses was a truly enjoyable experience that caused laughter and confusion throughout you Singh Photo by. This title has been awarded to one of Foothill’s groups for two consecutive years. Concert choir, which is open to all students, is the class for many first-year choir students. “I’m looking forward to singing at ‘Music in the Parks,’” says Concert Choir member Ragan Lacy (‘16). “We’re ready to win some competitions.”

ELECTION REFLECTION THE MIDTERM ELECTION KAITLYN WANG editor in chief The 2014 midterm elections came to a close on Tuesday, November 4th, and for many students, that simply meant that the ads running down Facebook have disappeared. Of course, only 36.4% of the electorate voted-- an unfortunate amount that perhaps was not representative of an electorate as a whole. The Republican party gaining a majority control over the Senate, a general decline in the voting electorate, and California’s election of incumbent Tom Torlakson as the superintendent of education were notable consequences of the elections. Perhaps these bills don’t seem like much when they’re printed on the ballots, but they have far-reaching consequences. The Democrats have held the Senate majority for years, which generally seems to fit in with our Democrat president. But the Republicans taking over the Senate could make a difference in the next presidential elections, come 2016. “I’m sure it’ll definitely change some things. It might not be a big thing in itself, but little things add up,” said Amy Zhao (‘16). It is possible, too, that the Democrats losing the Senate may force the two parties to work together, although it is difficult. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

holiday business closures KAREN PHAM staff reporter Businesses like TJ Maxx, GameStop, Costco and more that plan to be closed on a holiday, according to nytimes.com,”will remain closed that day to show that they are family-friendly and honoring the holiday.” On the other hand, businesses like Walmart, Target, Macy’s and many more will be open on the holidays to make shoppers happy. Calvin Pham, a graduate of Foothill High School, stated, “I think it’s good so that the workers can go spend time with their family.” I agree with Calvin since businesses should be closed because it is a day that should be celebrated together with family. Also people should be allowed to celebrate holidays because they would rather be at home with their families laughing and having fun than at work. Ronald Nguyen (‘17) said, “Workers deserve a break with their families during the holidays.” It is unfair for some businesses to close and some businesses to open because then the employees at the businesses that will open will feel like it is unfair that people that have their businesses closed have time with their families a lot more than them. Ingrid Yeung (‘18) answered, “Well, it is the holidays, so it makes sense that they are closing right?” Along with Ingrid, I agree that it makes sense that they are closing since it is a day for people to celebrate with their families.

California superintendent of education Tom Torlakson. Photo credit: tomtorlakson.com ELECTION, CONT. FROM PG1 The Economist reports that Senator Bob Corker, a Republican Senator from Tennessee, stated that he told President Obama that he would be better off with a Republican majority, because both sides would be forced to vote and act responsibly. The bills passed in California included a bond of $7.12 billion for California’s wa-

ter supply, increase “rainy day” savings in California’s General Fund, and reducing many nonviolent crimes from felony classifications to misdemeanors. What would this mean for students? Perhaps not much, but it does affect California as a whole. California’s drought has dragged on for many years, and with the worst of it being these past few months, it is hopeful that with the increased bond and savings, more water will be able to be conserved and distributed throughout the state. Finally, one of the most important elections in California pitted two Democrats against each other, California superintendent of education incumbent Tom Torlakson and challenger Marshall Tuck. It was essentially a fight over “old” and “new,” that was, between the current institution and those who want to reform education. They agree on many major issues, but when it came down to it, the issue of teacher tenure, or the idea that teachers who have been teaching longer had priority over those who were hired later, was what divided them. “I don’t know much about the superintendent election,” Zhao admitted. Not many students did, but Torlakson’s reelection could mean a stagnancy in California’s public education: or it could mean a continued slow improvement. Only time will tell.

The Forces of Light and Dark Collide: DESTINY ANTHONY ITLIANO staff reporter Destiny is a fast-paced first person shooter game. You play the game as a “guardian”, a long dead soldier that was revived by his/her “ghost” ( a small robot that accompanies you, giving you the tool of hacking into things at your disposal) to fight the main antagonist, known as “the darkness”. The story goes that “the darkness” pushed humanity (among other races) to the brink of extinction, and was only held at bay by a great, spherical being known as “the traveller.” The traveller created the ghosts out of pure light (the force guardians supposedly wield against the forces of darkness), and early on in the game you learn that the traveller is dying. Your character will then take it upon himself to fight the darkness and try to save the traveller. Where does your passion for organic farming originate? It started when I first bought property and land. I believe farming is important because it shows a recognition of the way we produce food since many people don’t know where their food comes from. Growing your own food gives you a healthier lifestyle and a better connection with the earth and environment, which has been lost over the past two generations. Choosing this way of living is also like a political statement and I believe that choosing to grow your own food is as important as voting at a valet box.

ADIT SHRESTHA sports editor The Foothill 2014-2015 fall season for sports was a very successful one, with Foothill athletes excelling from winning individual awards to hanging banners. This season, Foothill student- athletes excelled in football, girls’ tennis, boys’ and girls’ water polo, cross country, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis, and girls’ volleyball. The football team finished their season with an overall record of (9-3) losing only to their cross town rivals, Amador. Foothill advanced to the NCS playoffs where they easily beat Antioch 54-8, before losing to Pittsburg 10-7 to end their accomplished season as EBAL champions. Some stand out players for this years team include senior wide receiver, cornerback, and USC commit Isaiah Langley (‘15), senior quarterback and SMU commit Kyle Kearns (‘15), junior running back Isaiah Floyd (‘16), and junior wide receiver Ruben Mercado (‘16). The girls had a great season with many memorable wins including their win over Amador. Girls’ golf ended their season very contently. Mimi Nguyen (‘17) said, “The season could’ve been better but we improved as a team and individuals as the season progressed.” Senior captain Ashna Jasuja (‘15) mentioned that the girls were able to finish their season off with a record of (9-4). Foothill’s girls’ tennis ended their season finishing third in EBAL and reaching the quarterfinals of NCS with a record of (11-5). When asked about how her senior season was special, Jessica Chen (‘15) replied by saying, “I tried to savor every experience, the last home game, EBAL championship, and to enjoy it instead of rushing through it.” As the fall sports season ends, the new winter sports season begins. Be sure to keep an eye out for your Falcons in soccer, basketball, and wrestling.

AUGIE CHEN staff reporter With the 2014 college football season in its home stretch, the playoff picture is slowly but surely getting a bit clearer. This season is the first season in the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) where a four team playoff will be used to decide a national champion. Going into late December, the University of Oregon, University of Alabama, and Florida State University are all sure lock-ins for a top four spot, as long as they win their remaining games. This, however, is no easy task for any team, as one slip up sees national championship hopes all

KAYVON HERAVI staff reporter The Golden State Warriors have been dominating the National Basketball Association with an exceptionally impressive 19 win to 2 loss record (as of December 11th 2014). During the beginning of the season, the Warriors enjoyed their first 5 games with victories, the likes of which have not been seen for decades in the franchise history. They are currently the top team in the Pacific division who are most likely seen to continue that lead. According to Spotrac, Klay Thompson signed a 70 million dollar contract for a four year extension to the team. Thanks to the previous coach, Mark Jackson, Klay Thompson has seen much improvement in his play (namely his 3-point shots) to provide a valuable asset to the Warriors’ roster. And this is not even the tip of the iceberg. Other great players on the team include Stephen Curry, Harrison Barnes, David Lee, Andre Iguodala, and Andrew Bogut. With a very powerful starting lineup and bench, it is easy to see that the Warriors will at least make it into the playoffs with a good chance of advancing to the semifinals. The team has made it into the playoffs two times recently, and have advanced to the second round by defeating the Denver Nuggets. This season, Warriors defeated the Lakers 136 to 115 and the Clippers 121 to 104, proving that are known as the Splash Brothers. Other possible candidates include the University of Arizona who will be playing for the Pac-12 Championship against the Oregon Ducks. will most likely be awarded to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota or Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon. Mariota has been responsible for 38 touchdown this season, 29 of which are passing, while only throwing 2 interceptions. Gordon is making his case after setting the FBS single game rushing record after rushing for 408 yards against Nebraska (since been broken by Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine). Gordon averages 190.9 rushing yards per game and is on pace to break Barry Sanders’ record for most rushing yards in a season. With the college football regular season in its final weeks, America will surely have an exciting finish in early December.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS The film Alice in Wonderland, released March 4, 2010 and directed by Tim Burton, grossed over $1.02 billion worldwide, being Tim Burton’s most successful film in his career; for the sequel. Iconic favorites including Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsleigh, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, and many more will be returning for the sequel. The expected release date is May 27, 2016.

TOY STORY 4 After years of speculation by fans, Toy Story 4 was officially

announced to be in the works on November 6, 2014. Having made $1 billion dollars globally from Toy Story 3, Pixar plans to continue the Toy Story franchise. Not many details have been released regarding the sequel’s storyline, but fans can be rest assured that the film will contain the same magic as its predecessors with the return of voices like Tom Hanks as Woody, Michael Keaton, and Joan Cusack. The current release date is set for June 16, 2017.

FINDING DORY

Finding Dory, the sequel to the iconic film Finding Nemo (2003), was first revealed to be in the works on popular talk show, Ellen Degeneres, by none other than the voice of Dory herself, Ellen Degeneres. Though on the show the film was slated to be released by 2015, the film’s release has been pushed back to June 17, 2016. “I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16. But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.” Finding Dory will be focused on the amnesiac character Dory, and will explore the idea of her being reunited with her family. It will take place one year after Finding Nemo and be set off the coast of California.

INCREDIBLES 2

Announced March 18, 2014, the sequel to the ever so incredible Incredibles film. Though not many details have been released regarding the movie’s plot, the hype for its release is very much alive. The first film, The Incredibles, earned more than $70,000,000 during its opening weekend in 2004, so the amount of interest and popularity this sequel has gained is no surprise. Brad Bird, the first movie’s director, has not been confirmed to be directing the sequel but has mentioned in interviews that he has been brainstorming ideas that will improve upon the original film’s invigorating action, engaging family bond building, and clever social commentary. The slated release date for the film is December 23, 2015, making it a perfect movie to watch during the holiday season.

CARS 3

After these past years being given spinoffs such as Planes, the third installment of Cars will finally be a reality. The first Cars film was revealed in 2006 and earned more than 60 million dollars in the box office during its opening week. Despite its prior sequel, Cars 2’s, lackluster performance in ratings, it seems that the franchise’s loyal fans have encouraged Pixar to release another film. Voice actor Michael Wallis, who plays Lightning McQueen, revealed to the public on August 17, 2013, that Cars 3 would be moving its setting from Cars Route 66 to Route 99. Movie director John Lasseter also announced on October 2014 that the film would feature a tribute to Hayao Miyazaki’s film The Castle of Cagliostro in a form of an old Citroën 2CV, an old-school car. Expected release date is June 24, 2016.

Marvel Phases Into Phase Three ANTHONY MINAISE media editor

On October 28th, Marvel released their Phase Three plan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Phase Three consisted of eight new, long awaited, and action packed movies. Marvel Studio’s President Kevin Feige announced all these titles at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood, California to a crowd of enthusiastic fans. The span of these movies last from May 2015 until May 2019, from The Avengers: Age of Ultron to The Avengers: Infinity War Part II. Feige introduced each movie with a teaser cinematic along with an explanation afterwards on what to expect. Not much information was given about each movie, except some hints about the plot and the movie title. He first introduced Captain America: Civil War where the world limiting super-

human activity, causing lots of conflict between Iron Man and Captain America. AntMan was introduced next where Scott Lang, Ant-Man, would get a super-suit that allows him to shrink down to the size and strength of an ant; along with his mentor Dr. Hank Pym, they plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. A fan favorite, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, was then introduced to be about a brilliant but arrogant surgeon to get a new chance at life when a sorcerer trains him to defend against evil. Due to the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 got moved from July 2017 to May 2017 to keep up with the increasingly growing fan base. To add to the Thor series, Thor: Ragnarok was introduced as Thor is to confront the

gods when Asgard is threatened with Ragnarok, Norse apocalypse. The second half of the movies to be announced came with a little surprise. Black Panther was introduced with a movie poster of the hero himself in his outfit as the crowd watched in awe. When the royal leader, T’Challa, of an African nation’s father is killed, T’Challa roams the country as the Black Panther. The Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Part II were introduced together with an interesting teaser trailer, showing Thanos with the infinity gauntlet in hand along with scenes from past Marvel movies leading up to the title. The Avengers have to face Thanos and his powerful infinity gauntlet, properly called the Infinity War. Both movies are set to come out a year

apart, in May 2018 and 2019. The long awaited Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel was announced, who is supposed to be the most powerful hero ever, to be released in July 2018. The Inhumans, an isolated community of superhumans fight to protect themselves, debuted with a bang. The only reason Marvel got away with planning these movies in this time frame was because of the forever craving fans. Feige said they made their past ten films with around a seven billion dollar budget in total, with Guardians of the Galaxy marking their tenth movie in the franchise, and now they planned to make another ten movies in a six year period, better than all their best movies. “I am most excited for Age of Ultron, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther; the latter two because they are different from most superhero movies; ones got a strong female lead and the other is king of an African island so they’re both very interesting. It also opens a lot of opportunity to bring in other fun characters too,” says Maddie LaDue (‘16) about her most anticipated movies. Marvel movies seem to be a big hit at Foothill and around the globe, making demand for these movies more than ever. This Marvel Cinematic Universe saga is the fastest growing movie franchise out there, so they can get away with doing twenty movies in a twelve year period.

FLOCKING OUT

There are many spirited falcons here at foothill high, but Jason Roney (’17) tops them all. “I always flock out. Every single spirit day, I try my best to go all out.”. On his extreme days, he takes the time to dye his hair blue, paint his arms yellow, and paint blue war stripes on his face. During an interview he stated, “My favorite part about flock out days is when you go around campus and see all of your friends participating in the spirit day because it shows we’re all unified as a school.” He not only follows the football games with his amazing spirit, but says, “[he’s also really]big on basketball, especially the Amador games.” One of the reasons he loves to go all out, especially with the paint, is for other’s reactions. “Whenever people see it, they’re really excited that I did it, because it looks really ridiculous or they shake their head in disappointment. Each reaction is equally as funny.” This student is a great spirit icon for our school and represents just some of the amazing things the students at FHS do to stand up for their school. BIG HERO 6

Here are 6 “sick” (it’s just an expression!) facts about Big Hero 6, courtesy of stitchking.com and movieviral.com:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest film, Big Hero 6, is Disney’s spin of the characters of Marvel’s comic of the same name from the 1990’s. Complete with the typical features of many Disney films (such as the orphaned main character Hiro), Big Hero 6’s combination of pure Disney magic and the raw action of Marvel leaves you on the verge of happy tears and filled with adrenaline by the end of the film.

1. Walt Disney Animation Studios created 670 different background characters for the film, compared to the 270

in Frozen, 15 in Wreck-It Ralph, and 80 in Tangled, using their system “Denizen”. Any staff member could use the system, and many of them can be seen along the street of San Fransokyo, where the movie takes place.

2. The character design team visited Carnegie Mellon to learn about soft robotics, which influenced their decision to create Baymax as an inflatable robot.

3. The voice of Professor Callaghan, James Cromwell, studied at Carnegie Mellon University.

Studio artists studied speed skaters, snowboarders, skateboarders, and surfers before they developed GoGo Tomago and Fred.

4. Studio artists based Baymax’s movements off of that of penguins. 5. The character’s personalities are connected with their powers. For example, Wasabi is somewhat of a perfectionist, thus he has control blades.

MOCKINGJAY PART I 6 Mockingjay Facts That May Shake Your Tailfeathers:

In the latest installment of the hit franchise, Katniss finds herself in the supposedly destroyed District 13 after the Quarter Quell. As the film progresses, Katniss finds herself taking on a more complicated role of the “Mockingjay” as word of the secret rebellion in Panem spreads. Adjusting to her new life as the symbol of the rebellion, Katniss tries to keep herself together while leading the fight and being separated from her partner Peeta, who was captured and taken to the Capitol. With actors perfectly characterizing their roles, riveting action scenes, and exhilarating special effects, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat and hungry for the next one.

1. Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) would often eat smelly foods, such as tuna or onions, before kissing scenes with Liam Hemsworth (Gale) just to mess with him.

2. Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) admitted in an interview that the hardest part of filming Mockingjay Part I was when he had to strangle Katniss.

3. While on set, Lawrence accidentally gave Hutcherson a concussion while they were shadow boxing. 4. The director of Mockingjay, Francis Lawrence, has also directed music videos for Beyonce and Lady Gaga. 5. Supporting actress Cressida, played by Natalie Dormer, actually shaved half of her head for the movie. 6. The character Antonius, who plays a minister to President Snow, does not actually exist in the books.
