inflightmagazine SENIOR EDITION

final farewell

To the Class of 2015: We want to start off by thanking all of you for helping create such crazy memories throughout the past four years. The friendships that we forged at Foothill will last a lifetime. No matter where we all end up, we will always be able to cherish the wonderful times we shared together as Falcons. You have all helped to create a legacy that will live on for years to come. Whether it be our award winning homecoming skits (never forget junior year), our unparalleled spirit (homecoming week spirit winners junior and senior year), our enthusiasm (much love to the men of Mr. Foothill) and our day-to-day fun that we share (shoutout to Ryan Knop for fixing the speaker system that one Friday and dropping his Christmas mixtape every year). We’ve been able to come together as a class and more importantly as a family. As your president and vice-president, it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone on a personal level. It is safe to say that our class is filled with talented artists, incredible athletes, creative writers, graceful dancers, extraordinary musicians, savvy coders, and intelligent scholars. In the future, wherever this exhilarating journey (also known as life) takes us, we know that each and every one of you will be successful in whatever you decide to pursue. While this may sound corny, we have one of the most passionate and driven classes in all of Foothill history. Despite the fact that we’re all going to be taking different paths, we all share a passion for what we love. As the school year comes to a close, we want you reflect on the memories that you have made here on campus. Don’t forget the laughter at lunchtime, the rolling hills of Foothill, the wonderful teachers and administration, and most importantly, the memories that we all created together. It’s been an honor serving as your president and vice-president for three and two years respectively; we truly look forward to see what the future has in store for everyone. Soar-t of Good Advice

6

All seniors know that high school is a challenge. With schoolwork to do, peers to get along with, and time to manage well, it is no wonder that many find school overwhelming. We asked various seniors for their advice for coping with school, and we hope their experiences will help underclassmen enjoy high school as much as they did!

soaring above the rest BY JENNIFER KIM ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

Columbia University YUJIN KIM VALEDICTORIAN Q: How would you describe yourself? A: I would describe myself as jocular, hard-working, and super.

Q: How would you describe Roland and your relationship with him? A: Roland has been a close friend of mine since the start of freshman year, and I’ve always had a lot of respect for him. He’s not only an incredibly fast learner and super insightful, but also very dynamic and outgoing. It’s this unique combination that makes him super likeable. Q: What are you most looking forward to about college? A: The immense freedom available. I think that college is a time to learn and experience and discover in ways that will never be possible again, so it’s important to take advantage of the freedom you have and really expand yourself.

Q: What are you planning to do as a career? A: As of now, I’m hoping to become a professor. My favorite subjects are Math and Physics, and I’m really more of a paper-and-pencil kind of guy than someone who likes to build things or make experiments, so doing research at a university would be perfect. I also really love teaching because it leads to so many great relationships and interactions.

blossomed a beautiful relationship.

Q: What is something your fellow classmates don’t know about you? A: I’m (mildly) colorblind. The grass looks orange to me.

Q: What does being valedictorian mean to you? A: It’s an honor, and it validates the long nights and sacrifices I’ve made to get to this point.

Q: What was one memorable experience from high school? A: For the first two weeks of school, I earnestly believed that Mr. Gibbons’s name was “Mr. Gibson.” I became his sworn enemy as a result, but out of the powerful sentiments between us

Q: Do you regret anything about high school? A: I wish I took a lighter Sophomore and Junior course load and used that extra time to expand my boundaries, try new things, and do more of what I wanted to do. I feel that would’ve been much more valuable than getting in a few more AP’s.

Q: Was it worth it? A: I strongly believe that every mistake I made and every action I took played a role in creating the person I am today, and there’s not much that I would take back from the past four years. So yes, it was worth it.

Yale University ROLAND HUANG SALUTATORIAN Q: How would you describe yourself? A: Pretty much perfect, and the most humble person I know. Q: How would you describe Yujin and your relationship with him? A: Yujin is a complete tool but we’re still homies. When we were in middle school, we took math together at Amador and that’s how I got to know him. I’m glad to have met someone so cool and smart at the same time. Q: What is something your fellow classmates don't know about you? A: More people know that I dance than that I’m a musician. I’ve been playing piano for over 12 years but have only recently started dancing.

Q: Biggest challenge at school? A: Not being late to 1st period. I live 7 minutes away from school by walking but I’m still late all the time. Q: What are you planning to do as a career? A: I’m not sure, but it’ll be related to science or engineering. I’m thinking management in the tech industry. Q: How do you feel being salutatorian, and how does your family feel? A: It feels like now people have something to call me out on whenever I do something stupid. My brother, who was valedictorian 3 years ago, tells me to get on his level.

Q: Do you regret anything about high school? A: I wish I had met the people I know now sooner. Now that senior year is over, it feels like I haven’t spent enough time with them. I also wish I started working out earlier. Me in the present would appreciate it. Q: What advice/final words would you give to the class of 15? A: Listen in class, and don’t forget to have fun. If a stranger asks you to get in a van with them, say no. Go accomplish even more amazing things than you already have! Q: Was it worth it? A: #noragrets (except the ones under the question about regrets) 7

“The Foothill-Amador rivalry it’s more than just a rivalry. It’s more than just two schools disliking each other. It’s about the competition; it’s supposed to fun and it’s something people enjoy doing with friends. My favorite part of the game isn’t just watching the game but looking around and looking at the crowd go insane. The pride for the school is so amazing, and it’s like joining together and cheering brings everyone closer together.” -Montana Miller (‘15)

Each year, the officers of each respective grade pull their classes together to put on an awesome show in honor of homecoming week. Erin Overland (‘15), senior class president, spoke about the seniors’ victory this year: “Senior year, we really proved that we can be not only funny, but super classy at the same time. I also liked how everyone came together. I think the main reason we won is because after junior year, we had a little slump and everyone looked down on us. Because of that, we were able to pull our class together and during that week everyone was super spirited. I would walk into practice, and people who normally never talked to each other would be bonding.”

Any loyal falcon knows that our campus is monitored by two of the most brave, daring, and suave campus supervisors in history. The first, who is widely referred to as “Bud” has been here since the creation of the earth. The second, Jack, nicknamed “Bud Light” has only been here a few years. Nonetheless, they both make this campus feel like home and it just wouldn’t be Foothill without them. Contrary to their names, they influence students to make wise and safe decisions each day. #budmakesyouwiser #budweiser

Q and A with Nicole Soto (‘15) Q: What does this mural mean to you? A: It was always a blank wall and now it’s the big spirit wall. I figured we should put a falcon because its symbol of our school and student body. Q: What does it mean to you? A: I get to leave a lasting mark on the school. Also I get to brag to everyone thats graduated made say ‘I made that’.

Q and A with Izoah Snowden (‘15), commander of the beat! Q: What was the hardest and best part about being in band? A: The best part about being in band was making friends and having a central part of the high school. Q: What was the hardest part about it? A: The hardest part is that it’s a lot of work and takes a lot of time during the week. It’s hard to balance schoolwork and practicing for band when we practice 3 days a week for 6 hours. Q: Reflecting on the past 4 years, how has band shaped or impacted your life? A: This year was my first year as percussion captain and it made a big impact on my life. I developed my leadership skills and it helped me become a better person. Picture (Right): Foothill Band plays at Carnegie Hall, New York

MCC Week, or Multicultural Week is a Foothill tradition. MCC Club co-president Reshma Pyala (‘16) states “MCC week is put together for the school to come together as one, accept each other, and respect other cultures that go unrecognised day by day. It has a large impact because people get to see how other cultures are and get to take place in activities! Even people that aren’t a part of certain cultures take passion into learning about them and it’s an amazing overall experience!” Chinese yo-yo club president Areeb Yaqub (‘15) states, “Chinese yo yo has been a big part of my life. It’s helped me meet new people and become a better and more open person. With more people joining, we’ve come together and become a family.”

you’ve heard Mr. Richey sing

Anyone who has ever heard had Kurt Richey as a teacher has heard his incredible singing voice. From his performance of “Agony” at the DECA Talent Show to his random outbursts of song in class, everything he sings is a rich treat. He spices his lectures up by erupting into song when you least expect it. A member of his church choir, Richey quit his high school football team to take part in musicals. If all goes well, his spontaneous songs will grace this campus for years to come.

sears’ voice means it’sfriday

It’s Friday morning. All the tardy kids rush to third period as they hear Scott Sears, our Video Productions teacher, announce Friday news over the intercom:

“Haaapy Friday Falcons!” he chirps. “Turn your TVs on to channel 55 or you can watch the news on Vimeo. Make sure to come to the game this Friday; it’s gonna be a big one! Remember Falcons: Win Games, Hang Banners. Peace out.” BONUS: If you just read that quote in Sears’ voice, you’re a super falcon.

13.

Q/A with Noah Aimar (‘15) Q: What motivated you to decide to participate in the production of the Lip Dub? A: My motivation is being able to participate in events that I know are bigger than me. Also gaining the experience to take control of the cinematography for a school wide event was a no brainer. Q: Reflecting back as a senior, how has making this video impacted you? A: As a senior, this video served as closure for me. Leaving part of my legacy at this wonderful school has always been important to me. Q: What were some of the challenges and best parts of the experience? A: As with any video working with others is always a challenge. I’m thankful for leadership and their ability to put this all together for me to shoot and show off all of our hard work. The coolest part of this experience was seeing the drone shot for the first time. Seeing the whole school together in that “F” really had our whole team feeling a sense of accomplishment.

your goals

This year’s seniors have soared to amazing heights by getting accepted to top colleges, ranging from UCLA to Boston University. Since the beginning of their freshman year, our seniors have always joked about getting into these kind of colleges, only to realize that it would one day become reality. As their time at Foothill dwindles down to only a few days, they have achieved many goals throughout their time as students at Foothill. We wish the class of ‘15 the best of luck in their future wherever it takes them.

GARDEN

A swish of dresses and a rush of laughter fill the night air as seniors dance, overlooking the San Francisco skyline. It is their last chance to enjoy a school dance, and many embrace that chance vigorously. The annual senior ball, this year themed “A Night in the Garden,” is an event many spend the entire year looking forward to. Held this year at San Francisco’s Metreon City View, it captured breathtaking views and fantastic memories, for the royalty, Justin Lee (’15) and Katie Jefferies (’15) and for everyone alike.
