From the Headmistress Dear Parents, The Sixth Form enjoyed a very special visit from Mr Ronnie Carless, grandson of our 1917 Head Girl, Gwendolen Patullo. Mr Carless donated to the Sixth Form Common Room a bench dedicated to his grandmother’s memory.

Unfortunately bad weather led to the postponement of the sky dive organised by Head Girl Sophie Watson, in aid of St Amedeus School, Tanzania; however, it has been rescheduled for next term. Ms Gallagher will be leading a trip to St Amedeus in the autumn half term break.

Conference, which involved Lower Fifth, Upper Fifth and Sixth Form students from several London schools. Many thanks to all those staff and sixth formers whose efforts ensured the success of the day - and above all, to Mrs Forbes Mrs Francisco, Ms MacDonnell and several Sixth Form tutors.

A charity bake off was organised by the Upper Fourth on Friday 1st March and many girls and staff brought in a wide variety of cakes. Mr Chiverton took the role of “FHS’s own Mary Berry” to choose the winners.

Congratulations to the U16 Netball team who reached the Middlesex county finals on Saturday 9th March.

We were again pleased to welcome the Chaplain of St Paul’s Girls’ School, the Rev’d Vanessa Baron, to lead our Ash Wednesday Service in St Cyprian’s Church, just before half term. On Sunday 24th March, FHS hosted the annual Model United Nations

During the Easter holiday Ms Hack and Miss Hallett will be leading a Geography trip to Iceland while Mrs Edwards and Mr Diesel will be taking a German visit to Berlin. With best wishes for a happy Easter,

Mrs V M Durham

Sixth Form visit to the Houses of Parliament

Sixth Formers attend a debate in the Grand Committee Room

On Friday 1st February the fifteen strong AS Politics group, accompanied by Miss Barton and Mr Chiverton, were privileged enough to visit Parliament. Once through security we awaited our guide in the awesome medieval Westminster Hall and were then taken on a tour of the Palace of Westminster, visiting a committee room, Central Lobby, a division lobby and the actual chamber of the House of Commons. The trip culminated in a student debate in the Grand Committee Room, in which Kitty Miles opened the discussion, in front of around fifty A level students, with a gutsy defence of the effectiveness of parliamentary committees and their role in scrutinising the work of government. This was a fantastic opportunity to see inside one of the main centres of British political power. Science Live! Event at the Dominion Theatre

Globetrotters

After short break on a blustery February morning, twentyone keen Upper Fifth scientists headed to the Dominion Theatre for the Science Live! event. The event itself is a series of lectures given by leading scientists about their own research and current breakthroughs in Science. It was a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the breadth of Science outside their GCSE syllabus and well as an introduction to what the daily routine of a scientist can involve. The day began with a lecture by Dr Lucie Green (Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London) who spoke passionately about the atmosphere of the Sun. Professor Steve Jones (Emeritus Professor of Genetics at University College London) then spoke about his current genetics research and the related ethical implications for society. Professor Andrea Sella (University College London) stirred our curiosity by asking us why zebras have stripes? An insightful lecture on inorganic Chemistry drew together seemingly unrelated branches of Science. Our final talk of the day was from Dr Simon Singh (scientific author) who amazed us with the complexity of the universe and the proof of the Big Bang theory, the highlight of which was a demonstration involving the electrocution of a gherkin. Many thanks to the wonderful Upper Fifth whose enthusiasm was infectious, and to Miss Lowes who accompanied us. Dr Welch Head of Chemistry Department

Globetrotters is a club for students from the Thirds, Lower Fourth and Upper Fifth and is run by two Sixth Form students and Miss Hallett. We meet once a week to discuss geographical issues around the world, and recently we have been raising awareness for the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). We have been raising money to sponsor polar bears in the Arctic, and the money raised will be used to research ways to combat climate change to save their icy habitat. We recently ran a Globetrotters week to raise money for this cause, which included a bake sale, a "guess the number of sweets in the jar" competition and a "name the cuddly toy polar bear" competition. Thanks to the many generous donations; we raised over ÂŁ200 for the WWF. Globetrotters club meets on Thursday lunchtimes at 1:30pm in the Geography Room. Everyone is welcome to come along! Amy Solomon, VIADM

Lower Fourth Disco Once again the annual Lower Fourth disco on Friday 1st March was a great success. The School Hall was transformed with coloured lights, disco balls and sparkle by the team of Sixth Form prefects, Upper Fifth and staff. Our thanks goes to Yasmin Robinow and Juliette Perrin who masterminded our music for the evening. The girls enjoyed dancing and entertaining our guests from Sussex House, Wetherby Prep, UCS, Lyndhurst House, The Hall and Hereward House. Everyone had great fun and even the staff managed some moves on the dance floor. We are very pleased that the event raised ÂŁ500 to help students at St Amedeus school in Moshi, Tanzania, and we would like to thank everyone for their support. Mrs Bexon Head of Lower Fourth 4

As part of our sports tour to Sri Lanka, girls undertook a number of fundraising events to raise money for the Rainbow Centre in Sri Lanka.

Rainbow Centre Fundraising

Events including the Easter raffle, mufti day, Upper Fifth charity gala, Autumn concert entry, QEH collection, Lucky Dip at the Christmas Fair and infamous ‘Try-athlon’ were a lot of fun and raised a fantastic amount of money. After the touring party came back from Sri Lanka, the girls also donated the remainder of their Sri Lanka rupees. The total amount raised was over £7,000, which was presented to Mrs A Nagle (founder) and Mrs E Girling (patron) of the Rainbow Centre in Sri Lanka, so that they may continue their wonderful work with all of the underprivileged children whom we visited during our tour. Sixth Form French trip to Lille On Saturday 2nd February, a group of Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth, along with Madame Gustave and Madame Sénégas, enjoyed a cold winter's day in Lille, France. The focus of the trip was to experience the impact of the Second World War on the city. The group had a guided tour of Lille, including a visit to the Charles de Gaulle Museum. The fantastic day concluded with the group enjoying delicious waffles and hot chocolate at the famous Pâtisserie Meert! Miss Sénégas Modern Foreign Languages Department

Top Scores for FHS Mathematics student Xiusi Lower Fifth student Xiusi is ranked amongst the top 250 students in the country for her ability in Mathematics following her recent high score in the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge (taken by the top third of pupils nationally in year 11 or below). Xiusi’s achievement is even more significant given she is currently in year 10. She has now been invited to participate in the next round, the Hamilton Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad, which is the hardest paper for her age group. News of Xiusi’s recent success has even reached her native China as the national Chinese TV channel (China Central TV Beijing) visited Francis Holland to interview Mrs Martin, Head of Mathematics, and Miss Murugan, and discover more about the UK’s attitude to the Mathematics Olympiad. China is no stranger to success in Mathematics having come first twelve times in the International Mathematical Olympiad over the past fourteen years. Xiusi may now have a chance to represent the UK at the next International Mathematical Olympiad in Colombia in 2014, if she continues to produce top scores. UK universities also take into account the results of the Mathematics Olympiad when selecting the very best candidates Mrs Martin Head of Mathematics Department

A Special Visit in Memory of Gwen Patullo, Head Girl in 1917 One afternoon all the Sixth Form gathered in the Hall to hear a talk given by Mr Ronnie Carless, grandson of Gwen Patullo, who was Head Girl of the school in 1917. He spoke with affection of his grandmother, who had lost a brother as a soldier in the First World War. She left Francis Holland to go on to finishing school in Belgium, and then married Harry Carless, and went to live with him in India, where he was in the Indian Police. Their three children went on to successful careers in public service, including Hugh Carless, who became an eminent diplomat. Mr Carless has very kindly donated a bench to the school, which is much appreciated by the Sixth Formers, in the Cloister area on the second floor of school. The plaque on it reads: In loving memory Gwendolen Carless nee Patullo 1900-1989 Head Girl 1917 Justice of the Peace Encourager of Hearts Mrs Forbes Head of Sixth Form

Mr Ronnie Carless and family are joined by the Headmistress, the Head of Sixth Form, Head Girl, Sophie Watson, and her team.

The Great FHS Bake Off On Friday 1st March the Upper Fourth held a charity event to raise money for Plan UK. Our event, "The Great FHS Bake Off" consisted of several events all of which were run by the students in the Upper Fourth. Staff also helped with the event by baking cakes and sweet treats and decorating them with much care and attention. The first event of the day was held at short break; the Dining Hall was a hive of activity for the cake sale. By purchasing a cake students had the opportunity to enter into the "Who baked it?" competition: all the cakes the teachers had baked were on display and students had to match the teacher with which cake they had baked. The second competition took place at lunchtime and was where students were asked to guess which teacher had the best tasting cake. Upper Fourth Form Captains and Deputy Form Captains had the envious task of tasting all of the yummy cakes along with Miss Baig and FHS’ own Mary Berry – Mr Chiverton! Some magnificent feedback was given about all of the baked goods, everything from rich chocolate cake, to zesty lemon drizzle cake, super sweet Oreo cupcakes and a superbly decorated Victoria sponge. After much consideration the best tasting cake went to Miss Hallett for her baked vanilla cheesecake with raspberry coulis. Many thanks to everyone who supported the event: we raised a total of £208.49. An extra special thank you to all of the staff who made the event such a success by taking the time to make such delicious cakes. Miss Laytham Head of Upper Fourth F r a n c i s

The Inter-form Drama Competition 2013 The Inter-form Drama Competition is inclusive – all forms take part and the repertoire is extremely wide, ranging from comedy to tragedy and back again. The choice of play is that of the form and this encourages all of the girls to get involved – all direction, production and performance work is done exclusively by the girls and each year the adjudicators are amazed at the quality of the drama. This year the standard was higher than ever and difficult judgements were made to select the final round of plays and indeed the final prize winners. The School Birthday saw the final round of competition, and once again the school came together to watch the eight plays which made it through this very tough competition. It was a fantastic day; a showcase for a range of production work and our talented students. The stage was transformed and the audience whirled from place to place and through a range of emotions. This final round was adjudicated by Rachel Forbes, who warmly praised the quality of acting, the excellent use of the stage and the effort and enthusiasm that had gone on behind the scenes of each and every play. In the end, the prize for Best Play was awarded to LVL for their interpretation of A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller, Best Adaptation to Emer Connolly from IIIJ for Another Cinderella Story and that of Best Actress went to Claudia French from UIVS for her performance as Mayella Ewell in To Kill a Mockingbird. Ski Trip to Alpe d’Huez For twenty-eight FHS girls along with Mrs Grant, Miss Mahieu, Mrs Francisco and Miss Hotchkiss, the February half term started with an early meet up at Heathrow airport; the ski trip had arrived and the team were suited and booted for an intense week in Alpe d’Huez. Nestled within the warm comfort of the Hotel Beau Soleil in a ski-to-the-door location, we were surrounded by stunning alpine landscapes just a stone’s throw from the lifts. Each day began with an early start and too much breakfast followed by a morning of skiing with the instructors. After a long lunch, more lessons followed in the afternoon; a total of five hours a day skiing meant that everyone improved, particularly those for

whom it was their first time on the slopes. We were incredibly lucky with the weather too, with each day bringing sunshine, blue skies and beautiful snow. The evenings were never dull with lots of th activities in store; ice-skating, a quiz night, a ski show and the incredible "invertigo ropes" where the girls rediscovered their inner child, and the students enjoyed it too. After a week everyone had goggle tans, sore shoulders and irregularly enlarged calves, but it was all worth it for the great skiing, the "Schoko-bons" and the sunshine!

Lower Fifth Trip to the British Museum One cold snowy day at the end of January, some members of the Lower Fifth Classical Civilisation class made their way to the British Museum. We began by taking a look at the famous Rosetta Stone, and inspecting it to find the cartouches which enabled scholars to decipher the hieroglyphic script on the stone. Having done this, we proceeded into the impressive Parthenon gallery. We have been studying Athens, so we were amazed to see the original frieze from the Parthenon temple, showing us the activities of the Panathenaea festival in relief. Having learnt about this in the classroom, we were able to identify aspects of the procession on the frieze, and were astounded to think that this very frieze overlooked the processions themselves as they took place two and a half millennia ago. From there, we proceeded into a room full of Athenian artefacts, where we compared what we saw with a written record of Athenian life by Pericles. We particularly liked the novelty drinking cup and the fine jewellery! We finished in the Greek and Roman Daily Life room, where we were able to find artefacts which supplemented what we had already learnt about ancient Athenian life. Finally, we spent some time exploring on our own, and even managed to have a break in the café. The high point of the afternoon was feeling the direct contact with the ancient world which the artefacts gave us. Mrs Wood Classics Department

Gym and Dance Display 2013 The 2013 Gym and Dance Display was a superb evening of grace, agility and resolute control. Since September, our girls had worked extremely hard and dedicated themselves to weekly training and practice sessions. The School Hall was filled to overflowing with a very appreciative audience, and judging by the fantastic applause, the evening was a wonderful exhibition of FHS talent. Gymnastics at FHS continues to thrive, and the Display this year was a testament to the hard work and dedication that all of the gymnasts give. Both the Gymnastics Squad and Gymnastics Training Squad represented themselves extremely well in a number of very strong and creative routines. Grace, agility and control was the order of the night, and our girls certainly did not disappoint. It was clear to see not only the technical fluidity that the girls were exhibiting, but the irrepressible faces of enjoyment. The final routine was a master-class in management and mystery. All members of the gymnastic squads were involved (over thirty girls) in a Harry Potter themed finale that delighted the crowd to a rousing and seemingly unending ovation. Congratulations and thank you to all girls and staff involved in an outstanding 2013 FHS Gym and Dance Display especially to the tireless efforts of Miss Bain, Miss Laytham, Ms Gallagher and Miss Mahieu, who were the driving force behind the whole production. As the standard continues to rise, I cannot wait to see what the Gym & Dance Display of 2014 will bring! Miss Tucker Head of PE Department

Spring Term Sports Report This term the PE Department has taken girls to compete in the Middlesex Gymnastics competition and Middlesex Junior Netball competition where the girls did very well. The Thirds and Lower Fourths were also treated to a Dance Workshop; African and Bollywood dance was enjoyed by both of the year groups respectively. The PE Department also took a trip to the Wembley Arena to watch a fortuitous England beat Australia in the Spring International Netball series. February Fitness Fortnight was a great success again this year, the girls reflected on last year’s results and looked to improve fitness areas for next year. This year’s Gym and Dance Display was outstanding and a wonderful exhibition of FHS talent. The FHS Inter-form Netball tournament ended the term nicely. There will be more on this event in the next edition of the FHS Sports Report.

UK Linguistics Olympiad At the beginning of February, thirteen girls entered the challenging Linguistics Olympiad. This is a competition run across the country, which enables pupils to test their linguistic aptitude and logical reasoning skills by approaching a number of different languages, the majority of which they will never have seen or even heard of, to work out some of their rules. It requires determination, care and attention to detail, not to mention a good understanding of the way languages work.
