Francis Holland School Newsletter December 2014 Malaysia Sports Tour 2014
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, As a busy autumn term nears its end, there is much to celebrate; this month’s newsletter depicts just some of the energy and creativity that characterises daily school life. The FHST Governing Council has given its full approval to the refurbishment of the swimming pool and the changing room facilities and this exciting building project is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks. Cricket has been added to the long list of extracurricular activities: any pupil wishing to join this after-school club, which is free of charge and open to pupils in all year groups, should contact Miss MacDonnell, Director of Extra-curricular Activities. On 28th November staff from both FHS schools will attend their joint annual professional development day, which this year will be held at FHS Sloane Square. Mr Barnaby Lenon, Head of ISC, former Headmaster of Harrow, will lead the main session of the day, focussing on the 2015 A level reforms. Sincere thanks to everyone who supported the school at the FHS Careers evening just before October half term. More than seventy professions were represented, enabling students in the Lower Fifth, Upper Fifth and Sixth Form to be inspired about the careers and opportunities that might suit them, beyond university. This important biennial extra-curricular event is a feat of organisation by the Careers Department, which is led by Mrs Kate Oakley, and expertly assisted by Miss Jo Hallett. At the annual Quondam AGM and lunch for former pupils and teachers on Saturday November 8th, Mrs Alison Edelshain, Chairman of the Quondam Committee, welcomed alumnae from F r a n c i s

the Parents’ Association Committee to its designated charitable causes for this year, which include FHS Summer Camp 2015.
This year’s annual Christmas Fair, organised by the Parents’ Association Committee under the aegis of its Chair, Mrs Laurel Rafter, was a wonderfully happy and festive event, which raised several thousand pounds for charity. Thanks to the exceptional hard work of a dedicated team of FHS parents and committee members, with help from many students and teachers, the school was transformed! Particular thanks go to all member of the FHS Parents’ Association Committee; to Miss Clare MacDonnnell (Director of Extra-curricular Events); Mrs Kath Whiteman (Deputy Head) and to the many FHS parents who helped tirelessly all afternoon in the café and on the stalls. Staff News Ms Amelia Slocombe current Director of Higher Education and Deputy Head of Sixth Form, will be acting Head of Sixth Form while Mrs Alex Francisco is away on maternity leave from April 2015. We are delighted to welcome Mr Mark Mason who has started our very own cricket club which runs weekly on Mondays 4 - 5pm. Mark is one of only 200 Advanced level coaches in the world and may be the most experienced cricket coach in London! Mark has an expertise not only in oneto-one elite coaching (and managing representative county teams) but also in group coaching in schools. He is indeed partly responsible for the rapid growth in girls’ cricket in London and we would welcome your support in urging your daughters to join this club and participate in girls' cricket!

FHS Globetrotters Club Globetrotters is a Geography club that meets every Monday in G13 for the Thirds, Lower Fourth and Upper Fourth. This term the girls have enjoyed learning about exotic locations around the world by listening to their teachers' tales of past holidays and experiences. We've learned plenty of exciting stories, including tales of Ms Tucker's climbing expeditions in Africa, about Mrs Wood's experiences of living in Singapore and how Mr Clayton visited the former Burma when many dared not to! We still have many other teachers lined up to share their stories in the coming few weeks, before students do the same. We're always happy to welcome more girls, so please feel free to pop along on a Monday at 1:25pm in G13 to hear more. Look out for the posters around school to see which teachers are coming up! Harvest Festival at St Cyprian’s Church
St Cyprian's Service for the Harvest Festival
FHS chef Mos displays his culinary skills
Harvest Festival is a key charitable event in the Francis Holland calendar, and each year the girls outdo themselves in terms of the food they collect and the enthusiasm they show for helping those less fortunate than themselves. This year was no exception, and as well as collecting an abundance of tinned and dried goods, the girls presented their boxes beautifully. We were particularly impressed with the box dressed as a pumpkin and the depiction of Noah’s Ark! All donations were sent to North London Action for the Homeless, who are so thankful for our donation. Our service was held in St Cyprian’s Church and we are thankful to Father Beauchamp for delivering a thoughtprovoking sermon. Ms Jodie Farthing Head of Religious Education Department F r a n c i s

Upper Fourth Geography Trip to Cadbury World and Bournville
Sketching Bourneville Village
On Wednesday 8th October, the Geography Department took the Upper Fourth to Cadbury World and Bournville. They looked at the housing that George and Richard Cadbury built in Bournville for their workforce and compared this to the terraced housing that workers from other factories would have lived in. In each area the girls completed sketches and a questionnaire about the housing, environment and facilities. The girls all agreed they would rather have lived in the wellplanned Bournville Village with its open spaces, shops and larger houses! The highlight of the day was a trip around the Cadbury factory where the girls learnt where cocoa is grown and how chocolate is made. The liquid chocolate tasting with a choice of toppings at the end of the tour ensured the trip ended on a high note. Despite the torrential rain that followed us round all day, it was a very enjoyable and productive visit. Many thanks to my colleagues who accompanied us and to the Upper Fourth who behaved so well. Upper Sixth Philosophy Conference 2014
Some of the Upper Sixth with speaker Dr Peter Vardy
On Monday 17th November the Upper Sixth Philosophy and Ethics class spent the day at a conference delivered by Dr Peter Vardy. Dr Vardy is a charismatic, inspirational lecturer, and having been vice principal of Heythrop College he is extremely knowledgeable about the philosophical issues that face young people today. Along with Charlotte Vardy he delivered thought-provoking ideas based on religious
experience, and engaged with the audience in an intellectually stimulating debate. The information also complemented the A2 Philosophy course and gave the girls excellent points of analysis, as well as showing how various issues affect different peoples' lives.
Thirds Art trip to the Tate
Congratulations to former FHS Art Scholar!
On Monday 10th November, the entire Third year group set off by coach to visit the Tate Modern in Southwark. The girls’ coursework being focused upon tone and colour, they explored three of the large public galleries making notes and drawings, and identifying works which particularly captured their imagination. It was a packed, busy and very exciting day!

History trip to Russia 2014
Visiting a Russian secondary school
The History Department took members of the Lower and Upper Sixth to Moscow and St Petersburg over half-term for a whirlwind tour of Tsarist and Soviet Russia. Highlights included a tour of the Kremlin grounds in Moscow with its monumental towers, golden-domed cathedrals and ancient palaces. We also visited a fascinating relic from the Cold War; a nuclear bunker one hundred metres below street level and left untouched since the 1960s. An exciting overnight train journey brought us to a freezing St Petersburg where, after a warming breakfast of pancakes and coffee, we toured the stunning Peter and Paul Fortress where political opposition was incarcerated at the turn of the
eighteenth century; we also loved the Peter and Paul Cathedral which houses the remains of almost all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II and his family. We spent a morning at a secondary school, joining in with English classes to discuss issues such as President Putin’s popularity and the Ukraine’s future. An afternoon at the fabulous Hermitage Museum allowed us a small insight into the vast array of treasures on display. It was a memorable trip, and the girls were simply a pleasure to accompany. 2014 Prize-giving at Queen Elizabeth Hall This year's annual School Prizegiving was held on Wednesday 1st October at Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank. Mrs Durham hosted the evening and was joined by the new Chair of the Francis Holland Schools Trust Governing Council, Mrs Marie Winckler. The evening not only celebrated the pupils' excellent academic results but also gave the audience, of over 850 parents, pupils, Governors and Prep School Heads, the opportunity to experience the outstanding musical and drama talent at FHS. There was a rousing African drumming performance by Upper Fifth GCSE Musicians, and an entertaining excerpt from Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, followed by the 60-strong School Choir singing I was Glad.

Sponsored Charity Walk in Regent’s Park
Smiles all round for IIIM
This year the sun shone as the entire school descended upon Regent’s Park for our annual sponsored walk! As ever there were some incredible costumes, and the time and effort going into these did not go unnoticed. The atmosphere was full of fun, and both girls and staff were in high spirits! All girls completed laps of the park in aid of two fantastic charities; SSAFA and Francis Holland’s very own Summer Camp, where looked-after children are taken on an adventure holiday during the summer holidays. The sponsorship money has come in thick and fast, and we would like to commend the girls on their enthusiasm, and thank parents for their continued support. Annual Parents’ Association Christmas Fair
Avery and Kate collect their Lucky Jars
Christmas season officially started at Francis Holland last Saturday afternoon. It was the perfect chance to start holiday shopping and support our charities. The Hall was filled with festive spirit as everyone shopped and enjoyed the activities. There were several new vendors this year ranging from ski-wear to jewellery to beautiful scarves and notebooks. FHS chef Steve King once again dazzled us with his stunning and delicious cakes. The Lucky Jars and tombola that lined the library sold out in minutes as they do each year. The Young Enterprise teams were very busy selling and so many students helped out in every room. This year we had the added excitement of the Silent Auction for the X Factor Final tickets. Thank you to everyone involved with the Christmas Fair for their support: committee members, parents, students, teachers and all who attended. Caelo, Hope and Rosie hard at work in the library
On behalf of the Parents’ Association, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday and New Year.

Taking a quick break before completing their Bronze Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Congratulations to all the Bronze participants who have completed and passed their practice and assessment expedition weekends during the first half term. The girls should be proud of their efforts! The girls should now be focusing on completing a project about one element of their expeditions; this should then be handed in to Miss Hallett by the end of November.
Girls must also upload all evidence onto the ‘e DofE’ website including any pictures taken over the expedition weekends. If your daughter needs any help at all with an online aspect of the award then please encourage her to come along to the online clinic which is run by Mrs Wood and takes place every Tuesday at short break in the ICT suite.
Any girl in the current Lower Fifth who is thinking of carrying on with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, and progressing onto the Silver Award, must complete three out of the four sections of their Bronze award before January 2015. Mrs Kirsty Lombard Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Co-ordinator

Malaysia Sports Tour 2014
Netball team
The 2014 Netball and Hockey Sports Tour was action packed, from the moment we set foot onto Malaysian soil. Within 24 hours of arriving, we had already had a mini-tour of Kuala Lumpur, sampled many authentic Malay dishes, been rained on and played our first Hockey and Netball matches! I can unequivocally state that the pace of the tour remained "high octane" for the remainder of the trip too! Ten months of training set a firm base of fitness leading into the tour, but the Malaysian heat worked hard to take away our advantage. The matches were tough and physical, and it was clear to see why Malaysian sport is respected around the globe. The Netball and Hockey teams; the Eagles, the Vipers, the Scorpions, the Leopards and the Tigers were excellent in their representation of FHS and of the UK, and with a fairly even ratio of wins and losses — the girls were an excellent representation of UK sport. ne

Malaysia was a fantastic destination to tour and enjoy a multitude of different culturally diverse and enriching experiences. From the city, to the mountains and the sea, we felt like we certainly covered the length of this wonderful country. Of particular note was the amazing scenery of the Cameron Highlands, the magical experience of hand feeding elephants, exploring the beauty of the temples, battling the river wilds when white-water rafting and getting to know the Malay girls during post match refreshments. The hard work and extra trainings certainly paid off when we were on the tour, and all of our teams grew in confidence and ability over the half term. It would be remiss not to thank the constant support and dedication of the parents, girls and PE staff at FHS. The Sports Tour to Malaysia was a wonderful experience and one, I am sure, that will be remembered for a lifetime. Ms Jane Tucker Head of Physical Education Department

Quondam Lunch and Netball 2014
Old girls and staff post-match
Cometh the hour, cometh the Francis Holland School "old girls" to contest. The annual Netball match was held at Regent’s Park on Saturday 8th November the morning of the Quondam lunch. This year the team of 1985 school leavers were the winners and some things never change! The umpires were challenged, fouls were committed and denied, but the determination and skills levels on show took us all back in time. We were reminded that skills learnt a long time ago are
never really forgotten. This match was organised brilliantly by Manuela Robson and it is her effort that made this event such a memorable one. Old pupils and teachers enjoyed recounting old memories and friendships. We are looking forward to next year already. Mrs Sue Drummond and Mrs Felicity Forde Umpires!

FHS Sports Report
U15 Middlesex Netball team
The autumnal colours have been extra vibrant this year, so it is always a pleasure to walk out to the courts and pitches for lessons and to play matches. Lessons are running smoothly and there is a really nice spirit in the air amongst the girls. Our sports teams have been building in confidence and ability over the course of the term and the results are starting to show in our fixtures. The u14, 15, 16 and Senior Netball squads have represented the school very well at the Middlesex Netball tournament, as have the u13 and 14 Netball teams at the Sloane Square tournament. The half term was dominated by the incredible Sports Tour to Malaysia. Well done to all of the girls.
