Francis Holland School Newsletter February 2014 Junior Art Club Workshop in Regent’s Park
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, Although the Spring term began less than a month ago, the Christmas holidays seem like a distant memory. In typical FHS style, the school has been brimming with activity every day of the week – and often the weekend, too! The Upper Fifth “hit the ground running” in January, with ten days of GCSE mock examinations. With few exceptions, their focus and commitment has been impressive. As this goes to press, Sixth Formers from all over the UK are arriving at FHS to enjoy our annual Classics Conference on Virgil’s Aeneid, with guest lecturers Dr Ingo Gildenhard (King’s College, Cambridge) and Dr Armand D’Angour (Jesus College, Oxford). Huge thanks to Miss Baig, Head of the Classics Department, for what promises to be an inspirational day of academic lectures. Dr de Bono and Mrs Bachle-Morris are master-minding the annual Inter-form Drama competition this term, which is likely to be as keenly contested. The finals of the Inter-form Drama competition will be held on the 136th School Birthday, which will be celebrated on Thursday 13th February; the adjudicator will be Mrs Lisa Gershon (nee Jaffer), a “Polished corner". As this goes to press, Upper Sixth Theatre Studies students are completing rehearsals for their devised drama performance later this week and have intrigued the school with their excellent posters. During February half term, Mrs Grant and a team of colleagues will accompany the annual school Ski trip, which this year is going to Saas Fee in Switzerland. The annual Gym and Dance Display is always awe-inspiring for anyone less flexible than a pipe-cleaner. This year’s F r a n c i s

On Friday 6th December last term, the Junior Art Club enjoyed a workshop in Regent’s Park with visiting artists Jake Bee and Rob St John, during which they were recording sounds associated with the presence of water. The project has been run in collaboration with the artist Elizabeth Ogilvie, whose installation of melting ice, digital media and sound explores the central role of water in our lives, currently exhibited at the Ambika Gallery at the Marylebone branch of Westminster University. Miss J Orr Head of Art Department performance will begin at 5pm in the School Hall on Friday 14th March, preceded by drinks for parents in the library at 4:30pm. Lower Sixth parents and their daughters will receive information about the annual Higher Education Evening on Wednesday 19th March. This is always an important and exciting evening, which provides detailed information about university applications, including those to Oxford and Cambridge colleges and to universities in America and Europe. ”Polished corners” currently at Balliol College, Oxford and Robinson College, Cambridge, will be amongst those speaking during the evening. FHS parents whose daughters are not yet in the Sixth Form are most welcome to attend. The evening begins at 5:30pm and the main presentations start in the Hall at 7pm. Full details can be found on the school website. My thanks to Parents’ Association Committee for hosting a Supper Quiz on Thursday 27th April. Miss Alessandra Spera has joined the Modern Foreign Languages Department this term. She is a highly experienced teacher of Italian and French and is fluent in four languages.
Six Upper Sixth girls submitted their Extended Project this year. They completed their 5,000 word dissertations on their research into their chosen topics and presented their findings to an audience of students, staff and parents in December. The Extended Project is an optional qualification offered to the Sixth Form and is taken in addition to A Levels. It is designed to challenge the most able students and those with a real interest in a topic outside their A Level studies. Worth half an A2 level grade, the Project is open to all students in the Sixth Form. The projects are wide-ranging in their subject matter but all tested the students’ organisational skills, capability for independent research and ability to analyse sources and solve problems. We would like to congratulate Anna Cutteridge, Cleo Fabian, Beatrix Kilgour, Isobel Schaw Miller, Srutti Suresan and Emma Taylor for their effort and achievement in completing projects and eagerly await their results. FHS unveils school crest mosaic
Mrs Durham and the Mosaic Club unveil the new school crest
Monday 20th January saw the unveiling of the mosaic of the school crest created by our Mosaic Club which consists of some of the elderly of our wider community, members of the Art Department and Lower Sixth students. The Mosaic Club have been working on a large scale reproduction of the school crest over the last eighteen months and are delighted to have finally completed the mosaic. Each member worked from
an enlarged photocopy of a small section of the original image, meticulously reproducing their designated portion with the help of the Lower Sixth girls. All of the completed mosaic sections were then assembled to produce the final outcome. The Mosaic Club are very proud to have been invited to produce a mosaic for the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as their next project! Ms C MacDonnell Director of Extra-curricular Activities

Miranda is selected for 2014 Tall Ships Race
Flora, Tessa and Katie
Congratulations to Tessa Sandford-Bondy who has gained a place at Oxford University to read History. This has been a particularly competitive year for History, so her success is all the more praiseworthy! Tessa is to be congratulated for this tremendous achievement and her hard work and dedication during the application process. It has also been a stellar year for our American University applicants. Whilst the offers are traditionally made in March, two of our Sixth Formers applied through the highly competitive Early Decision process and achieved great success. Katie Rafter has been offered an Ivy League place at Dartmouth University, and Flora Ryan has secured an offer from the prestigious New York University. The girls are to be congratulated for all their hard work in the intensive application process which included sitting SATs and ACTs, all whilst maintaining a commitment to their A levels. Well done indeed!

We are proud to announce that Miranda Soskin in the Upper Fifth has been selected to take part in the 2014 Tall Ships Race this summer. She is also raising funds for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a charity which was established to challenge and enable disabled and abled bodied people to sail tall ships together on the open sea. Miranda will be aboard Tenacious and will race against other ships from all around the world, departing from Harlingen (Holland) on the 5th of July. The ship itself caters for a disabled crew, including wheelchair users, and even has a speaking compass for blind members as well as vibrator pads for those with hearing impairments. Miranda will also complete the Leadership at Sea programme, which will give her the opportunity to lead a team made up of a wide age range and different physical abilities. It will also form part of her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. We all wish Miranda the very best of luck!

Carol Service at St Cyprian’s Church
Students lead the procession
The Carol Service was even more special than normal because it marked the final performance for Mrs Rolfe Johnson before her retirement. Mrs RJ had been the Director of Music at Francis Holland for over thirty years. There was a wonderful selection of music featuring four different choirs, senior orchestra and a beautiful cello solo performed by Natasha Lucas. The organ was played triumphantly by Olly Lallemant. Following the concert, an a capella group of former students from Mrs Rolfe Johnson’s first ever music class surprised her with a few songs in the School Hall. The last day of term was marked with yet more Christmas choral music in our traditional church service and after the staff pantomime, the whole school sang lustily in our annual rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas at the end of final assembly. It was the perfect lead up to the festive holidays!
Members of the Chamber Choir
There are several concerts coming up, including two featuring GCSE and A-level performances, a string concert on 1st April and our summer concert early next term on 1st May. The school choirs are particularly busy this term preparing for various school services and also for our annual concert with Harrow School. This event will take place at 7:30pm on Tuesday 25th March at Harrow School and we will be performing Verdi’s Requiem. Some members of Senior Chamber Choir have also been specially invited to sing Tallis’ 40-part of Spem in Alium with the world-famous Tallis Scholars on Sunday 9th March. If parents would like tickets for either of these events, please contact me at robert.patterson@fhs-nw1.org.uk. Mr R Patterson Director of Music Swathy and Charlotte at the service 4

Lower Fifth GCSE trip to Lille On Saturday 14th December twenty Lower Fifth girls accompanied by Miss Barton, Miss Sanchez Martin and myself went on a Christmas shopping trip to Lille by Eurostar. As soon as we arrived in Lille we headed for the wooden chalets of the Christmas Market offering Christmas decorations and culinary delights, as well as arts and crafts. The Place Rihour area of Lille comes alive at Christmas-time and transforms itself into a real winter wonderland. The girls then ventured further afield in the narrow cobbled streets of the Vieux Lille in search of more items to buy.
In the afternoon we all went to Meert, Lille’s famous and opulent Art Deco tea room where we tasted the delicious waffles filled with sumptuously sweet Madagascar vanilla. These flat waffles were loved by Charles de Gaulle who was from Lille. Some of us also indulged our palates with nice hot and thick chocolate drinks. The day was most enjoyable and very fruitful. Mathematics Masterclass
Institute of Physics Lecture Last term, the Physics Department organised and hosted an Institute of Physics Lecture, Defying Gravity, by Laura Thomas, an Ambassador for the European Space Agency. Francis Holland was the only school in London to be chosen to host the Institute of Physics Schools and Colleges 2013 Lecture Tour. All the Upper Fourth pupils were lucky enough to see the lecture, along with students from a number of other schools. Laura explained how a good background in Physics could lead to an exciting career in space. She also gave an overview of the history of spaceflight and the lecture helped understand the challenge that gravity poses and the importance of getting into the right orbit. Commercial space flight and the exploration of our solar system may soon be available to us all. Mr D Ward Head of Science Department

Much Ado About Nothing Main School Production 2014 At the end of the Autumn term, a cast of fifty girls, crews and band for the school play put on a terrific show. Starting with a World War I tableau drenched in scarlet light and haze, and released by an enormous explosion, the actors told a story of love, deceit, damage, healing and trust. The play features two pairs of lovers: the conventionally compatible Claudio and Hero, he with the aristocratic title, she with both fortune and beauty, whose relationship is nearly derailed by a particularly cruel practical joke; and then there are the show-stealers, Beatrice and Benedick, still hurting after the failure of an earlier romance, constantly bickering and point-scoring, unable to see what is patently obvious to their friends – that they are ideally suited – and who are ironically only brought together by another practical joke. This is a play full of masks and veils, both literal and verbal, and it ends as Shakespeare’s comedies often do, with a dance; in this case we danced the Charleston, with the audience enthusiastically clapping along, choreographed by the inimitable Mrs R-J and her daughter Eli. I am hugely proud of the cast of twenty three, drawn from years 9 to 13, who presented this engaging and ultimately uplifting piece, and hugely grateful to Dr de Bono for her constant support as Assistant Director. FHS Poetry Competition Every year in the Autumn term, the English Department runs the FHS Poetry Competition led by Mr Smith. The theme for this year's competition was Women in time of War, 1914-1918. The girls were given stimulus photographs on this theme and were encouraged to write poems concerning women's involvement in war. The quality of the entries this year was absolutely superb and the English Department found it very difficult to decide on the finalists. The winning poems were written by Parastoo Irani-Kermani, Yasmin Morrell, Anastasia Michanitzis, Grace Pulling and Alfie Watt. The overall winner was Anastasia Michanitzis.
The winning poems were read out by the girls in a whole school assembly last term. The prize for the winning poem is the FHS Poetry Quaich, which was donated to the school by Ms Marianne Williamson, Head of English until 2010. The runners up all received Scars Upon My Heart, an anthology of women’s poetry from the Great War. Thank you to Mr Smith for organising this competition and to all the girls who entered such excellent poetry. Miss E Williams Head of English Department

Lower Fifth Classical Civilisation Trip to the British Museum
Some of the Lower Fifth at the Parthenon Galleries
On the very first Friday of term, the Lower Fifth Classical Civilisation class went on a trip to the British Museum. We had been studying the culture and way of life of the ancient Athenians throughout the Autumn term, and we were looking forward to the opportunity to see many of the objects and paintings we had studied in lessons. After a glance at the Rosetta Stone, the class spent some time in the Parthenon Galleries looking at the frieze and trying to find images which were familiar to them from lessons on the Great Panathenaia. We were excited about being able to look around and know what we were looking at without needing to read labels or have lengthy explanations.
We then progressed into the Athenian room, where we practised source analysis skills, comparing what we could learn about the ancient city from a speech with what we could learn from the objects around us. Finally, we spent some time in the Greek and Roman Daily Life rooms, rediscovering some key topics from last term as we saw objects grouped by themes such as Women or Children. While some did not find it easy drawing objects from the room, many found it a helpful tool in looking closely at the objects themselves. Many thanks to Miss Shah from the Mathematics Department for giving up her time to accompany us! Mrs C Wood Classics Department

Twelve dedicated members of the Equestrian Club soldiered on once again with great enthusiasm even after the Autumn Term ended, arriving at school bright and early on Thursday 19th December to accompany Miss Baig and Mrs Durham on a visit to the International Horse Show at Olympia. The whole day was a heavenly experience for all our FHS horse lovers: as well as the exciting prospect of shopping at the huge variety of stalls selling all things equestrian, the show included stunning displays from the Royal Art School of Equestrian Art and entertaining races at the Osbourne Shetland Pony Grand National. The speed of the Extreme Driving FEI World Cup Championships and the harrowing show jumping in the Shelley Ashman International LTD Snowman Stakes had everyone gripping their seats. Everyone went home feeling lucky to have seen such a marvellous spectacle (albeit with empty purses and bags heaped with riding related goods) and to have spent a whole day surrounded by horses – the perfect day out for any equestrian fan. FHS Sports Report 2014 is sizing up to be a cracker of a year! The term has already gotten off to a bang with the Junior and Senior Gymnastics squads competing at the Middlesex Gymnastics competition – more to report in the next edition of the Sports Report, but well done to all of the girls. The Thirds and Lower Fourth got into step during the January Dance workshop. African and Indian cultural dance styles were learned in a fun filled morning of activity. February Fitness Fortnight has arrived again – during lessons the girls will test their fitness, strength, agility and speed and mark their progress against last year’s scores. Training for the Malaysia Sports Tour begins in February for the upcoming tour this October and the girls will also be warming up in the pool for the Swimming Tour to Majorca this May half term. The preparation also heats up for the annual Gym and Dance Display on the 14th of March. Just one week later we get our running shoes on the FHS "Mini Marathon" held in Regent’s Park. Our Summer Sports Trials begin early this year again in preparation for the short Summer term. And last, but not least, the Inter-form Netball tournament finishes the term in a flurry of fun and competition. Woven around all of these activities are many team fixtures and FHS is also entered into the u12 and u13 Middlesex Netball tournament. Please do come and support these events if you have a spare moment! Congratulations to all girls who received a Sports Commendation at the end of the Autumn term. Reem volunteers with the Mosaic Club
Very well done girls!
Volunteering in the local community is part of the core principles of the Sixth Form at FHS. Sixth Form pupils are encouraged to seek their own placements developing upon their own strengths and interest for example volunteering in homework clubs in local libraries, or with local schools such as Swiss Cottage Specialist School. Rachel Cowan one of our Lower Sixth students, volunteers at a homework club at Church Street library every Barbara pays a ho me visit Thursday after school. At the club there are children between the ages of 5 and 10 who need help with their homework, particularly Mathematics and English. Many of our students choose to visit elderly people who are housebound. Penny Whitehead and Barbara Prunas visit an elderly lady on a weekly basis and are enjoying the experience and building a relationship with an interesting woman who otherwise they wouldn't have met. Penny and Barbara comment "We are learning so much from Ms Courtney and advise any other girl of our age group, to get involved with volunteering for the elderly, it really is a remarkable experience."
Miss N Murugan Mathematics Department
Finding volunteer placements is increasingly hard. Please do let me know if you are aware of any organisations that do require additional willing and very able volunteers.
Srutti Suresan was awarded a Silver Certificate as well as the Certificate for Best in Year.
Over and above all, Xiusi Li in the Upper Fifth was awarded a Gold Certificate, the Certificate for Best in Year as well as the Certificate for Best in School for the Senior Maths Challenge.
