Francis Holland School Newsletter July 2014 Charity Talent Show in aid of The Hospice of St Francis
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, It was a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Father Faustine Furaha for his second visit to FHS. Fr Faustine has recently retired as the founding Headmaster of St Amedeus School in Moshi, Tanzania, which we have sponsored for many years. At a memorable dinner on the final evening of the visit, FHST Chair of Governors, Mr John Dunston, paid tribute to Fr Faustine’s exceptional qualities as an educational leader. As this newsletter goes to press, the public examination season, which began in early May, is reaching its conclusion: congratulations to all the Sixth Form and Upper Fifth. My sincere thanks to the excellent staff team, led by Mrs Jeannie Cohen, the school’s Examinations Officer, who ensured that hundreds of GCSEs, AS levels and A levels examinations were conducted with kind and calm efficiency. Swimming has been a particular focus of this summer. During May half term, Mrs Kirsty Lombard led a most successful swimming trip to Mallorca. In June, Rebecca Adlington inspired the whole school when she spoke about her life as an Olympic athlete; she then gave by a memorable coaching session to the swimming teams. Plans are currently being drawn up to renew the swimming pool — and the changing rooms — in the very near future. More details will be given next term. Watch this space! My thanks to all of you who have F r a n c i s

IIIM were keen to raise some money to support a cause which was close to our hearts — The Hospice of St Francis, where a close friend of a member of the form had received excellent care. They were inspired to put on a talent show, FHS's Got Talent, at which a wide range of musical, gymnastic and dancing talents were showcased. We were blown away by the standard of the acts, as well as the dynamism of the hosts, Charlotte McBurney and Abigail Howard-Yam. FHS certainly does have talent! Mrs Claire Wood Classics Department supported the plethora of school events in the second half of this term: the GCSE and A level Art Exhibitions, the Junior Concert, the Lower Fourth Science Fair, performances of the Lower School Play, the Upper Sixth Leavers’ Prize-giving Evening; the annual Sports Day in Regent’s Park.
led by Mr Nick Gridelli during the summer holidays. At the end of July, 2014 FHS Summer Camp will be led by Mr Mark Chiverton and Mr Adrian Smith, who will be joined by Ms Clare MacDonnell, Ms Roisin Smith, Ms Flora Barton, Ms Jane Orr, and Ms Kay Hotchkiss.
A few tickets are still available for FHS remembers WW1, which promises to be a memorable and unique evening of music, poetry and excerpts from the FHS archives, performed by staff and pupils. All proceeds from the event go to SSAFA. Tickets (£8 adults and guests; £3 FHS pupils) can be obtained from Ms Roisin Smith at roisin.smith@ fhs-nw1.org.uk.
Please see the website (www. francisholland.org.uk) for details of the school office’s opening hours during July and August and for details of school events, next term.

Olympic Swimmer Rebecca Adlington visits FHS! On Monday, we had the privilege of welcoming Rebecca Adlington into school who through an inspirational and enjoyable Q & A session to the whole school, shared a variety of aspects related to her swimming career and her current Learn to Swim programme. She then coached the Swimming Team in the pool which the girls thoroughly enjoyed. This was a truly amazing opportunity for FHS, and staff and students alike were impressed by her warm presence. Sixth Form Induction Day The new Lower Sixth who will begin their A level journey in the Autumn term took part in a successful Sixth Form Induction Day on Monday 23rd July. The day began with a delicious breakfast of the famous "Sixth Form Muffins" in their new Common Room, giving the girls to catch up with each other after the GCSE exam period as well as meet the new girls who are joining FHS for the Sixth Form. The morning session focused on tips to manage your academic commitments in the Sixth Form, as well as giving detailed information about further opportunities for achievement such as the Young Enterprise Competition and the Extended Project Qualification. The girls also learned more about their new roles as Form Prefects and "Friendly Sixth Formers" to the Thirds. In the afternoon the girls were given guidance on obtaining and completing work experience to complement their academic profile, and a session from Debrett’s on successful first impressions and the value of a professional online presence. Before leaving to enjoy their summer the girls met their new teachers were given reading lists and activities to prepare them for their A level subjects in September. Upper Sixth Leavers’ Evening The annual Leavers’ Evening was held on Tuesday 1st July. This wonderful event provides staff and girls the opportunity to say an official (and often emotional) goodbye. The successes and significant achievements of each of our fifty-four Leavers were celebrated in heartfelt eulogies from their Form Tutor and each girl received their revered enamel Leavers’ Badge. Our Leaving Head Girl, Rebecca Harding, gave her final valedictory speech before the prizes were given to the girls who excelled in each subject. The evening concluded with the presentation of the final FHS Awards, most significantly our "Polished Corner Prize" which was awarded to Jemma Mendoza. Mrs Alex Francisco Head of Sixth Form

Summer Junior Concert 2014
Junior Choir
More than seventy girls performed at the Junior Concert on Tuesday 17th June held in St Cyprian’s Church. Featuring a wonderful variety of music from Tallis to Prokofiev via Bacharach the audience enjoyed hearing a selection of solos from the music scholars as well as groups including Junior Pink Ladies, String
Quartet, Junior Choir, Junior Chamber Choir, Junior Orchestra, String Orchestra and Guitar Ensemble. It was also the debut performance of the newly formed Cello Ensemble. Mr Robert Patterson Director of Music
English Literature Trip to the British Library On Friday 27th June, the Lower Sixth students of English Literature attended a workshop entitled Ways of Reading at the British Library. The Library contains over 150 million items from different countries, including all of the books ever written in Great Britain. This workshop challenged the students to explore to concept of "interpretation" and allowed them to appreciate social, political and biographical factors that influenced the way in which a text is written and received. They discussed feminist, capitalist and Marxist views of texts and compared how different readers understand and appreciate texts from different periods. This workshop was fascinating as it gave the pupils an insight into the context of when texts were written and was a brilliant start to their A2 course. We were lucky enough to lay our eyes upon the original manuscripts of celebrated works of literature such as Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (a text studied at AS level), Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and other texts including the Magna Carta, Shakespeare and even original drafts of some of the Beatles’ hit songs! It was a very exciting and informative experience for all! Father Furaha visit from St Amedeus School, Tanzania
Fr Faustine Furaha with the Senior Leadership Team. From L-R: Mrs Kath Whiteman, Deputy Head, Miss Jacqui Zugg, Academic Deputy Head, Mrs Vivienne Durham, Headmistress, Fr Furaha, Miss Colette Mahieu, Pastoral Deputy Head, Mrs Alex Francisco, Head of Sixth Form, and Ms Clare MacDonnell, Director of Extra-curricular Activities.
Father Faustine Furaha, the Headmaster of St Amedeus School, Tanzania, returned to Francis Holland for a fairwell visit before he retires as Headmaster at the end of this academic year. FHS is proud of its links with St Amedeus School which we have supported since the school’s inception in 2007. Father Furaha gave thanks in an inspiring school assembly during which he showed us the progress that the school has made and well as highlighting his ambitions for the future. FHS pupils and parents have raised money for the Tanzanian school in various ways, and groups of staff and girls have visited
the school to provide hands-on support from teaching, to painting and decorating the classrooms. Our most recent trip was during the Autumn half term 2013. Some of both our present and past pupils who have visited St Amedeus School, joined members of the staff, Parents' Association and Governors for a "Gala Dinner" on Wednesday 11th June during which Fr Furaha again thanked the School and parents for their generosity and support. Maths Society: Paper Folding Workshop! The Maths Society has focused so heavily on Paper Folding skills this year, mainly because of its intense popularity with the Thirds. So we invited Think Maths to present a workshop for both KS3 classes so we could look further into the topology of Paper Folding. Dr Florencia Tettamanti who has recently completed her PhD in Fluid Dynamics at Imperial College came and showed us how to make a Tetraflexagon. In geometry, flexagons are flat models, usually constructed by folding strips of paper, that can be flexed or folded in certain ways to reveal faces besides the two that were originally on the back and front. Starting by making a square with just one scissor cut, we folded our paper until miraculously we were holding a six faced shape. It was amazing how many ideas and conjectures everyone came up with; some girls definitely have a very fine tuned spatial awareness. Alia who is particularly skilled then went on and produced a hexahexaflexagon and everyone left with aspirations (and a worksheet) to make one too. Mrs Anjali Martin Head of Mathematics Department

Salter’s Chemistry Festival On Wednesday 14th May, Liya Khwaja, Saga Kjallgren, Lily Clarke and Anna-Maria Okhomina went with Ms Hotchkiss to South Bank University to take part in this year’s Salter’s Chemistry Festival. The day consisted of two competitions; in the morning the girls took part in a forensics challenge, where they had to identify a "criminal" by carrying out a series of chemical tests and some chromatography. In the afternoon, they had to make up concentrations of solutions themselves so that a precipitation reaction completed in exactly two minutes. To finish the festival, we attended a Chemistry magic show in one of the university’s lecture theatres, packed with bubbles, bangs and burning! Even though they didn’t win the competitions, the girls carried out their experiments with great accuracy, whilst demonstrating outstanding lab safety and team work. Well done! Lower Fourth Geography Trip to the Thames Barrier On Friday 13th June, the Geography Department took the Lower Fourth girls to the Thames Barrier and Olympic Site to climb the Orbit. We embarked on a boat trip at Westminster Pier, travelling east to the Thames Barrier. The weather was beautiful and the girls relished the opportunity to become tourists by taking in the sights of London and improving their sense of place. Once we docked at the Thames Barrier, the girls visited the Information Centre and learnt about why London needs the barrier, the effects of climate change, and the future of the scheme. They also walked along the profile diagram of the River Thames, getting a sense of scale as the river journeys from its source to the mouth. We then travelled to the Olympic Site where the girls re-lived Olympic 2012 memories. We climbed the 400 steps to the top of the Orbit for spectacular views of the Park, the Olympic Stadium and beyond. My thanks go to the girls for their excellent behaviour and the members of staff who accompanied me on the trip. Miss Jo Hallett Geography Department

Junior Play 2014
Living With Lady Macbeth On Thursday 26th and Friday 27th June, over thirty girls from the Thirds and Lower Fourth were involved in the spectacular performances of this year’s Junior Play, Living with Lady Macbeth, a play by Rob John, cleverly adapted and staged by Mrs Oakley as an ensemble piece with all of the actors onstage throughout.
Emma as Lily
The "mean" girls
This play was a characteristically savvy choice from Mrs Oakley: it deals with themes such as ambition and identity, following an adolescent girl’s dream of playing the part of Lady Macbeth in her school’s play and the reactions of her peers and family as she fights against stereotypes. By turns, comical and unnerving, the girls worked superbly well in this varied multi-layered piece, demonstrating their dramatic range with extracts from Shakespeare’s play as well as dream sequences and physical theatre used to convey the main character, Lily Morgan’s darkest desires.
Anna as Mon
It was a sheer delight to see girls in the lower school showing their considerable acting talents and their ability to learn complex staging moves and lines to work together to produce a thrilling production. Their performances were enhanced with beautiful mood lighting, provided by the Lower Fourth technical team. Many thanks go to Mrs Oakley for directing another triumph; to Dr De Bono as Assistant Director; as well as to all of the girls involved both on the stage and behind the scenes.

2014 Upper Fourth Activity Week at Knapp House The annual Upper Fourth trip to Knapp House was a great success again this year. The group spent a week from Sunday 22nd June to Friday 27th June taking part in a range of different activities near Bideford in north Devon. The week provided the girls with an opportunity to participate in a range of activities, gain in confidence and achieve things that they did not think they were capable of. We were blessed with lovely sunny weather which was perfect as the group took part in many water based activities such as water-skiing, surfing, crabbing, boat rides and canoeing. We also enjoyed an evening trip to the nearby town of Clovelly where we dipped our feet into the water, skimmed stones and the took in the views of the sea. The rest of the week we were kept busy by taking part in three activities per day including abseiling, rock-wall climbing, tunnelling, a low ropes course, pedal carting and a coastal walk in Westward Ho! The girls were supported by the Knapp House instructors who encouraged them to take ‘that extra step’ and get the most from all that was on offer. No trip

to Knapp House is ever complete without the disco on the final evening and this year it was especially enjoyed by Mrs Montgomery and Mrs Lombard who were disco divas on the dance floor. The Upper Fourth were hugely impressive in both their attitude and what they achieved throughout the week. They were ready to dive into any challenge without complaint, and willing to support one another along the way. On Tuesday 10th June several students from the Upper Fourth who are studying Italian, went to La Cucina Caldesi for an "Italian Pizza master-class." The group had learnt about food, Italian cuisine and eating habits as part of their syllabus so this was an excellent educational, as well as rewarding, experience to conclude the current academic year. The girls were taught about the origins of this dish and were shown how to prepare a delicious pizza, all in Italian. They then tried making their own pizzas using genuine Italian ingredients only. The fun was finally followed by a food-tasting session, in which the girls enjoyed their own dishes. Un peccato di gola totalmente meritato! Mr Nick Gridelli Head of Italian & Spanish Department

Summer Term Sports Report In a mixed term of brilliant sunshine and pouring rain, the FHS PE Department has managed to dodge the drops and make the most of every second of "dry" time! Our fixtures have been fiercely contended and I am happy to report the "wins" have been in our favour!! This last week of term has seen the return of our annual Swimming Gala and Sports Day. A full report will be in the next newsletter. Looking ahead, the October 2014 Sports Tour to Malaysia is destined to be an amazing educational visit and sporting challenge. Our students have been training extremely hard twice a week for the trip and will no doubt be ready to take on the locals when the Autumn term holidays hit! I would like to encourage all girls to try out for a sports team or club next year. Sports trials dates are available to view on the school website. The summer holidays should be a time to top up on outgrown PE kit or replenish stocks! Schoolblazer, our online PE kit distributer, will be offering a free delivery service if orders are placed between 30th June and 13th July, 2014. Please go online to www.schoolblazer.com for all PE kit orders. Ms Jane Tucker Head of PE Department

Younger sisters enjoying the "Hit and Giggle" afternoon
We had a perfect summer’s evening for the First Annual Hit and Giggle on Friday 6th June. It was a chance for parents, students and staff to meet at Regent's Park Tennis Centre for a relaxing and fun night of food, drink and tennis. Steve, our inimitable chef, fired up his BBQ and created a grilled feast, and the Pimms was flowing. Tennis for everyone took place on the court — from casual hitting to a few heated matches. A huge thank you to Ms Tucker, Mr King and Ms MacDonnell for all their help organizing the evening. Thank you to all who came and we are already looking forward to next year’s event. Already planning ahead for the Autumn, the committee will hold our Annual meeting on 6th November at 6:30pm. Sue Kemleben from the Parent Practice will lead a talk titled Raising Girls: Perfectionism and Self-Esteem. You will be receiving more information about this event early next term.
