Francis Holland School Newsletter June 2013 Ascension Day

From the Headmistress Dear Parents, As public examination season begins for senior pupils, “Change and continuity” was the theme chosen by Miss Joanne Green for her final whole school assembly, earlier this term. Miss Green has worked at FHS since 1977 and was appointed by Miss Ann Holt, a Headmistress whose photograph is on display in the school entrance hall. Miss Green was the first Academic Deputy Head in the school's history and has introduced important enhancements to the curriculum, such as the Extended Project Qualification, which can be taken in addition to A levels by the Sixth Form. Governors will be hosting a retirement party for Miss Green at the end of term in recognition of her outstanding service to the school. We were honoured to welcome the Bishop of London, The Rt Revd and Rt Hon. Richard Chartres KCVO, to lead our Ascension Day service in St Cyprian’s, during which three pupils were confirmed. Congratulations to Natasha Waddell in the Upper Fifth F r a n c i s

Ascension Day was celebrated by the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd and Rt Hon. Richard Chartres KCVO. The service included the baptism and confirmation of Iman-Esayo Dekonor and the confirmations of Charlotte Hogarth and Saffron Taylor. After the service, the confirmands and their families joined the Bishop for coffee in the Gloucester Room, where the girls were presented with their Confirmation Certificates and a Bible, a gift from the school. who was awarded the “persona grata” cup by the Head Girl’s team. We wish all the Upper Sixth the very best of luck in their A level examinations and thank them for the superb contribution they have made to many aspects of school life during their seven years at FHS. My personal thanks go to Head Girl Sophie Watson, who not only proved herself an intrepid sky-diver in aid of charity, but also led this year’s sterling Head Girl’s team: Olivia Boothman, Natasha Kleeman, Rosie Lom, Olivia Morelli, Cornelia Pianim, Zoë Silkstone and Phillipa Taylor. Many thanks to the Parents’ Association Committee for organising another highly S c h o o l

enjoyable Supper Quiz at the beginning of term. The evening was hosted by Mr Hugh Pym, father of Kirsty; the scores were marshalled into order by Mrs Dawn Hobson, mother of Amy. Sincere thanks also to the generous FHS parents who donated prizes for the raffle and the silent auction and to the Lower Fifth volunteers who were such excellent waitresses throughout the evening. Mrs Sue Silkstone retires at the end of this term as Chairman of the Parents' Association after seven years' outstanding service on the committee. The success of the Christmas Fair in recent years is very much due to Sue's legendary organisational skills and sheer hard work;

American University Success It has been a great year for FHS girls applying to competitive American Universities. Following on from the success of Tara Oberoi's offer of a place at the prestigious Architecture School at Cornell University, Elizabeth Teplukhin has accepted a place at NYU in New York City. Elizabeth is thrilled to start studying in the "Big Apple" from the fall of 2013. Katie Greenberg, who left FHS in 2012 and has been studying an Acting Foundation Course at Regent’s College in her gap year, has secured a place at Skidmore College, in Saratoga Springs, NY. Katie has also offered been offered an impressive scholarship to study in the USA. All three of these girls are to be congratulated on their hard work and tenacity in achieving strong SAT scores whilst studying for their A levels. Also celebrating success is fellow 2012 leaver Samar Ahmed who is taking up a place at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Mrs Francisco Deputy Head of Sixth Form

Middle Temple Major Scholarship Congratulations to Polished Corner Meera Rokad, who left Francis Holland in 2010, to study Law (European Legal Studies) at Southampton University. She has just been awarded the Harmsworth Major Scholarship by the Middle Temple, which will enable her to study the Bar Professional Training Course in October this year, which is the first vocational stage for training as a barrister. Xiusi Li selected for National Mathematics Summer School Xiusi has been invited to attend the UKMT National Mathematics Summer School following an excellent performance in the Hamilton Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad paper as reported last month. Attendance at the UKMT Summer Schools is by invitation only, and selection of students to invite is based on performance in UKMT Maths Challenges and follow-on rounds. Each year, only two Summer Schools are held for students mainly in school years 10 and 11 (ages 14–16).

Zoë has been awarded a Choral Scholarship at Robinson College, Cambridge. This is in addition to her conditional place to read English. Trip to Black Ven Farm

Having a hay day at Black Ven Farm

Girls from the Thirds to the Lower Sixth had an excellent start to the Summer term, joining the trip to Black Ven Farm. They were warmly welcomed by Francis Holland Governor, Miss Elizabeth Buchanan. After a tasty break at the farm house, the girls enjoyed cuddling lambs in the barn and showed great skill helping to move the older lambs to the fields. Miss Buchanan introduced the group to the vast wealth of information and experience required to run an organic farm and to care for all the animals. The girls toured around the stabled cows and

learned about the age of trees and the importance of clover in a healthy organic farm. For many girls, this was their first visit to a farm and a great opportunity to better understand the origin of the products they often find only in grocery shops. I would like to thank Miss Buchanan for her hospitality and for providing this great experience. Dr Cardoso Biology Department

The General Secretaries were Hannah El Gazzar, Rebecca Harding and Sasha Khan (Amy-Rose Kasfiner had also helped prepare the event, but could not be present on the day). Students from the Lower Sixth acted as leaders of the committees, journalists of the MUNday Times, runners and photographers, and they were all excellent in their roles, showing very good leadership qualities. The participants were equally impressive: members of our own Lower Fifth year and also students from Harrow and St Paul’s Girls School. They had prepared thoroughly in their roles as delegates from different countries and the standard of debate was high. Many congratulations to all involved for a really worthwhile event. Everyone involved has a greater understanding of the problems faced by our world leaders, as a result of this event. Mrs Forbes Head of Sixth Form 4

Geography trip to Iceland On the 31st March, thirty girls and four staff ventured on the Geography Department trip to Iceland. Flying away from temperatures of 2 degrees in the UK, we were lucky to be met by 8 degree ‘heat’ and beautiful sunshine for our five day trip. The main highlights of Iceland are the spectacular waterfalls, valley glaciers, geysers which "erupt" 126 degree water every four minutes, black volcanic beaches and basalt columns at the coast and the many volcanoes which erupt regularly, but fortunately not when we were there! It is also the only place on the surface of the earth where you can stand between two tectonic plates that are moving apart – the North American and the Eurasian.

Sixth Form Charity Skydive Saturday 20th April was a beautiful day to jump out of an aeroplane. Thirteen girls, led by Head Girl, Sophie Watson and two staff members plummeted ten thousand feet (two miles) to the ground in aid of St Amedeus School, Moshi, Tanzania. The girls exceeded their target of ÂŁ5000, a fantastic effort by all. The jump itself was an exhilarating and memorable experience. Summer Concert at St John’s Wood Church

Mrs Rolfe Johnson conducting the choir at St John's Wood Church

The Summer Concert was held at the beautiful St John’s Wood church on Thursday 2nd May. Because of the external examinations, this concert comes nearer and nearer to the beginning of the summer term. This year we only had two weeks to prepare some of the senior items and it is amazing that the girls reach such a fantastic standard in such a short time – they are musically quick, coping with advanced material and always so professional. The audience were regaled with many brilliant performances both vocal and orchestral. The instrumental programme included a wide range of music from that of the Renaissance composer Holborne, played by our fantastic brass group, to Beethoven (senior string quartet), Handel (String Orchestra), Rossini and a very exciting James Bond Medley played by the full orchestra. Natasha Lucas and Srutti Suresan provided some exquisite instrumental solo playing and the Pink Ladies had us nearly dancing in the aisles with their Latin Quarter

and Mr Abbs’s arrangement of Yes, My Darling Daughter. This is, of course, the last concert for our Upper Sixth girls, most of whom have sung and played their way through the last seven years at FHS. We heard some stunning solo singing from Mansi Patel, Natasha Kleeman and Zoë Silkstone. Natasha and Zoë also composed their own brilliant arrangement of Billy Joel’s And So It Goes for the Sixth Form leavers to sing in close harmony. The Upper Sixth decided that the evening’s collection of nearly £750.00 should be given to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Lizzie Teplukhin and Natasha Kleeman ended the concert with Puck’s final words from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A fitting end to a beautiful concert on a lovely sunny evening! Mrs Rolfe Johnson Director of Music

Confirmation and Ascension Day On Ascension Day 9th May, we were privileged to welcome the Bishop of London, The Right Honourable, Right Rev’d Richard Chartres KCVO, (our school Patron), to preside at our service, assisted by Father Gerald Beauchamp, Vicar at St Cyprian’s Church. The service included the Baptism of ImanEsayo Dekonor and the Confirmation of Charlotte Hogarth, Saffron Taylor and Iman-Esayo. The Bishop’s sermon seized everyone’s attention from his opening comment, “We have a mouse problem at home!” He went on to commend four areas to the candidates – Prayer, Ponder, Practice and Participate. I am sure they are words which the girls will take with them throughout life. This was a wonderful occasion shared by the parents and relatives of the girls as well as the whole school. We congratulate the girls and pray for them as they continue their Christian journey. After the service, the girls and their families joined the Bishop for coffee in the Gloucester Room. They were presented with their Confirmation Certificates and a Bible, a gift from the school. Mrs Bexon Religious Studies Department

Science Trip to Greenwich Planetarium

After period four on a drizzly day in April the Thirds boarded coaches and headed to the Greenwich Planetarium. On arrival at Greenwich Park we wandered through the greenery to eat our picnic in the shelter of the bandstand. The show we saw at the Planetarium was entitled The Solar System, Galaxy and Universe, during which we were led on a trip around the universe by one of the Royal Observatories astronomers. We started at Earth and then examined the motions on the Sun, Moon and planets, seeing the sky as the ancient astronomers did and exploring what can be learnt from naked eye observations. We travelled out through space examining dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. After a whirlwind tour of the universe we found ourselves safely back in Greenwich resulting in an enthusiastic question and answers session. We just about had time for an ice lolly in the sunshine and then we wandered back through the park to our coaches. Many thanks to the wonderful Thirds whose enthusiasm is infectious, and to Dr Young, Miss Senegas, Ms Gallagher, Miss Hallett, Miss Langley, Mrs Gurini and Mr Chiverton who accompanied us. Parents' Association News This year’s Quiz Night even topped last year’s with one hundred and forty parents and teachers in attendance – it was a tight squeeze but as we’re such a friendly bunch, there was no problem! The School Hall was yet again buzzing with the clinking of glasses, much chatter and amusement over the myriad of questions posed to us by Simon O’Hagan from the Independent newspaper. Our own parent, Hugh Pym – many will know him from the BBC One News – was a brilliant Master of Ceremonies and they both really kept us on our toes.

Mr Clayton disguised as a parent

The generosity of so many kind parents donating brilliant and exciting Silent Auction and Raffle Prizes greatly contributed to our gross profit of £7000, which after some deductions to pay for the event itself we hope will nett the PA circa £6000 – a record!! The proceeds of the evening will go to St Amedeus School in Tanzania who continue to increase their pupil intake and are fast becoming a school of some academic note in the region. The Committee joins me in thanking you all so very much for your continued support and generosity in helping to raise much-needed funding for this and many other worthwhile causes. As my daughter prepares to sit her A2 exams in June and my term of office draws to a close, I would like to personally thank my fellow Committee members, the school office staff, the kitchen staff, the caretakers, in fact everyone at FHS, not least of all Mrs Durham, who have made my role as Chair one of pure pleasure – it has been an honour and a privilege to work on the PA Committee. I shall miss you all very much but know that Mrs Laurel Rafter is going to be a really superb Chair with lots of new and fresh ideas to raise even more funds for the important work we all do together as an Association.

A packed room full of quizzers!

Lower Fifth field trip to the Lake District As usual after our Easter holiday, the Geography Department took forty-five Lower Fifths to Castle Head Field Study Centre in the Lake District to undertake fieldwork for their IGCSE “Alternative to Coursework” paper. We were blessed with sunny, but cold, weather and we spent time in the River Eea, measuring the changes in channel variables, then along to the coast to measure beach profiles and the vegetation on a salt marsh.

Our second day was spent investigating the impact of tourism in Lindale, a rural settlement, before walking up Orist Head to see the rather cloudy and very windy view of Lake Windermere. The girls ended the day with an hours fieldwork looking at the impacts of tourism in Bowness-on-Windermere. Many thanks to Miss Hallett and Miss Bain for accompanying me on the trip. Inter-form Debating Competition The Inter-form Debating Competition ran every Friday lunch throughout the Spring Term. Every form in the lower school entered a team, and three Sixth Form teams also took part. There were some fantastic debates in the rounds, with motions on topics ranging from dieting, to nuclear power, to the Pope!

Mr Peters makes a point during the floor debate

In the final, Cordelia Nagle and Lucy Streeten of UVP took on Lower Sixth pupils Tessa Sandford-Bondy and Kitty Miles, debating the motion "This house would apologise for the British Empire." This was a daunting task as the whole school was watching; however they really rose to the challenge. All four girls spoke wonderfully well, although their styles varied considerably, which was interesting for the audience to see. It was close, but on account of their arguments and style, the debate was given to Cordelia and Lucy, who had opposed the motion. Cordelia was also named as best speaker. The speakers inspired a really lively floor debate – we had contributions from girls in every year group and even from a couple of the teachers! We were very grateful to Val St Johnston, a former History teacher and Head of Debating at Francis Holland, who came to judge the event. She gave some really valuable feedback to the debaters. Congratulations to all girls who took part; and UVP in particular!

AS Theatre Studies Performance The Lower Sixth Theatre Studies students performed a version of Diane Samuels’ play, Kinderstransport, adapted for them by Mrs Oakley as part of their AS level performance examination on Tuesday 7th May. The play was watched by a rapt audience of girls, parents and staff, who found its portrayal of mother-daughter relationships and the transference of grief deeply moving. The evening concluded with a monologue from Miss Julie by August Strindberg, performed by Kitty, and a duologue from John Logan’s play about maverick artist Theodore Rothko, Red, performed by Anna and Rebecca. Congratulations to Kitty, Anna and Rebecca on their strong and exciting performances. Kitty, Rebecca and Anna in Kindertransport 1 2

History trip to Ypres

Upper Fourth at the Vimy Ridge Canadian War Memorial

For three sunny but freezing cold days at the end of March, the Upper Fourth visited the battlefields of the First World War. At Ulster Tower we were told how men from the Ulster Division went "over the top" on 1st July 1916. The most moving part of the day was a brief visit to a small cemetery on the roadside where Mrs Denniston paid her respects at the grave of her great uncle, killed in 1916. That evening, back in Ypres, we attended the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony and then let our hair down with a trip to the famous chocolate shop. Our final morning in Ypres was spent visiting the German cemetery in Langemark and the Allied cemetery at Tyne Cot. Both made enormous impressions on the girls, who spent an hour or two quietly walking among the graves, contemplating, not only the sheer scale of the losses but the individual soldiers themselves; the fact that so many were barely out of their teens, and that many came from

Inter-form Netball Tournament 2013

A brilliant game between staff

and the Sixth Form

IIIS plays and exciting match against IIIJ

On the afternoon of Tuesday 26th March 2013, Regent’s Park was a hive of activity as the FHS Interform Netball Tournament took place. The tournament is always a highlight of the sporting school year as every form plays in a series of netball matches for the chance to win the tournament trophy. All matches were closely fought and some exciting matches were played throughout the afternoon. For the first time each of the three Upper Fourth form groups finished on equal points and their places were awarded by counting goals scored for and against each team. As always, the most anticipated game of the day is the annual Staff v Sixth Form match. The Upper Sixth group had been preparing for months and they had the cheers of the crowd on their side. A gallant effort from both teams, it was the closest game for many years. When the final whistle went the staff had narrowly taken out the victory six goals to five. Congratulations to everyone who participated in particularly frosty conditions. The results of the day are as follows;

FHS Sports Rep rt In what seems to be idyllic conditions this term, our sports teams have flourished in the sunshine! Football fever is back and Mr Ward is running the Inter-form football finals this term. Our re-scheduled FHS Mini Marathon is fast approaching, so some extra fitness work over the half term would not go amiss. Summer term tennis coaching in lessons has worked well again this year and the return to Rounders in class is always a reason to shout and run about. Girls should be reminded to bring along sunscreen, hat and bottled water – even when it’s cloudy, as being sun smart is extremely important! It is hard to remember back to the bleak days of last term, but they do conjure fond memories of the Inter-form Netball tournament and the spectacular winning form of the staff against the Sixth Form. Rounders Club on Friday lunchtimes has become the club to attend this term, so if your daughters are at a loose end on a Friday lunch, encourage them to come along and have fun.

And do not forget Fitness Club on Friday mornings, free swim on Monday lunchtimes or look at the extra curricular calendar for other clubs that might catch your interest. Sports Day is on the horizon, so make sure all you parents clear your calendars for Tuesday 9th July from 11am at the Hub in Regent’s Park. It is a great day and a great time to see your daughters in action! We also have our Inter-form Swimming Gala on Monday 8th July, however spectators are limited to students only. Incorporated into the Inter-form Swimming Gala day will also be the Upper Fourth and Lower Fifth Water Polo and Volleyball competitions which now have a firm place in the FHS sporting calendar.
