Francis Holland School Newsletter September 2012
FHS enjoys an Olympic Summer! After our very own successful "FHS Olympics", girls from Francis Holland were incredibly lucky to receive tickets to the Olympics and Paralympics. Memories for a lifetime were had by all: Usain Bolt's first appearance in the stadium; Oscar Pistorius running with able runners; gold medals being won in the women's wrestling and men's boxing. UIVS and UVP, winners of the FHS Olympics competitions, were treated to sessions of Paralympic athletic action in the stadium - quite simply "inspiring a generation". Thanks must go to all teachers who accompanied groups, and also to the Mayor of London for his generosity! Miss C Mahieu Pastoral Deputy Head

The Parents’ Association Committee is organising the 2012 FHS Christmas Fair on Saturday 17th November from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Grateful thanks to Mrs Sue Silkstone, Chair of the Parents’ Association Committee, for leading the organisation of this annual event and to the many parents who have already offered to help. Further details of all these and many other future school events can be found on the school website: www.francisholland.org.uk
Our annual sponsored walk in Regent’s Park on Thursday 4th October will be in aid of the NSPCC.
From the Headmistress Dear Parents, This has been an Olympic summer at FHS as well as in London. The school whole-heartedly enjoyed the Olympic and Paralympic Games; none more so than UIVS and UVP, the two classes which gained the highest number of points during the “FHS Olympic” events, which had been held throughout the academic year. The prize for pupils in these two classes was a day at the Paralympics: a memorable and inspiring start to the term! Our public examination results this August were gilded with triumph, too: A level results were some of the best ever: 55.2% were awarded A* and A grades. Amongst the many individual successes at A level: Misa Saka achieved five A levels (in her second language) all at grade A*, A or B; several sixth formers gained straight A and A* grades, including Thea Waxman who achieved two A* and two A grades at A level, thus securing her place and choral scholarship to read Earth Sciences at St Peter’s College, Oxford. Upper Fifth results were equally impressive. 43.27% gained A* grades at GCSE or IGCSE; almost 80% of all GCSEs at FHS/NW1 this summer were awarded grades A* or A, placing FHS 27th in the national GCSE league table for girls’ schools, according to The Times. Many congratulations to all the pupils and teachers whose hard work and commitment are reflected in these wonderful A level and GCSE results. Now in its sixth year, FHS Summer Camp is one of the most important aspects of the school’s charitable work. At the end of July, a team of Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth students - and several members of staff - voluntarily gave time during their summer holidays to provide Westminster children in foster care with a memorable activity holiday week at FHS Summer camp at Sayers Croft, in Surrey. Many thanks to Mr Adrian Smith who led FHS Summer Camp 2012, assisted by Miss Farthing,
During the fortnight of October half term, Miss Tucker, Head of the PE Department, will lead a Sports Tour to Sri Lanka. In addition to their sports fixtures, the group will undertake charitable projects including work at the Rainbow Centre and Room to Read. These two remarkable projects were (coincidentally!) both founded by current FHS parents, and can be supported via www.justgiving.com/rcsl/donate and www.roomtoread.org/donate
Mrs V M Durham
Congratulations!
I look forward to seeing you at the many school events during this term, particularly the Autumn concert which will be held in St Cyprian’s Church on Wednesday 10th October at 7pm, preceded by drinks in the school library at 6:30pm. My thanks to those FHS parents who have volunteered to represent their profession at our biennial Careers evening, organised by Mrs Kate Oakley, Head of the Careers Department; this excellent event is a must for all senior pupils (Lower Fifth and above) and parents are most welcome to attend with their daughters. At the Parents’ Association Evening on Wednesday 7th November at 6:30pm, Mrs Kitty Hagenbach will talk about how parents can manage examination stress - especially their own!
Congratulations to Natasha Kleeman who is beginning her final year at FHS and has been awarded a choral scholarship to Worcester College, Oxford. Natasha is applying for a place to read English at this college in October 2013.

Lower Fifth Trip to Oxford Colleges It was a swelteringly hot day. However, we were all incredibly grateful that it was not raining. We set off bright and early, bursting with energy and excitement, ready to catch our coach. We were all stunned with the beauty of the city and the foreign idea that a city, so beautiful, could be centered around learning. We first visited Queen’s College, and then after admiring the Bodleian library with its Radcliffe Camera we went to Brasenose College: the clear favourite college among us. Seeing Oxford was an amazing experience and gave us a lot
to aspire to. Whether we fell in love with the Oxford based on tradition or the Oxford of independence and determination to learn, we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. We all felt very privileged, being some of the youngest students there on the Open Day, that we had the opportunity to be taken there and look around the departments and colleges by Miss Gustave and Miss Lowes. It was not a true fairy-tale, however - we all now know that to accomplish our goals and dreams of reaching the top university in the country will require a huge amount of hard work! Cordelia Nagle (LVP)
Lower Fifth girls enjoy visiting Oxford University
Lower Fifth Trip to Cambridge Colleges On 6th July 2012 a group of Lower Fifths took a trip to Cambridge University to find out what life may be like in just over three years' time. During the course of the day, we got a glimpse of the daily routine of the students at the university. The rooms were surprisingly homely even though they were vacated for the summer. The grounds of many of the colleges were extremely scenic and filled with flowers and beautiful architecture, which was very "Cambridge". Newnham College was the most popular college we visited, not only due to its quaint girly feel but because it was once home to Miss Barton herself. As part of the tour we looked at the various faculty libraries and talked to professors about their subjects. Everyone was extremely excited when we went to visit areas involving the subjects they wanted to study. I was especially fascinated by the Earth Science department, which had a whole museum of fossils dating back over 130 million years and samples of rock from outer space containing foreign alloys. Finally, before heading home to catch the train to Kings Cross, we looked around the huge University Library which holds over eight million books and has copies of all books copyrighted in the UK, which made the thought of studying there even more exciting. Overall the experience gave us a great insight to what our futures may be like and answered many of our questions about university subjects, accommodation and examinations. Not only did it give us a greater perspective but it also fuelled us to try to earn a place at the university. Alisha Mukherjee (UVH)

Science Master Class for St Edward’s Primary School Twenty four eager year 6 students from St Edward’s Primary School were invited to attend a Science Master Class in June. They attended two practical and theory classes including a "Chemistry wizzbang" session by Miss Hotchkiss and a "Rockets" session by Mr Ward. The sixth form scientists provided invaluable assistance throughout the afternoon. In the Chemistry session, they carried out flame tests, mixed chemicals and made a number of mini explosions, including an erupting model volcano. In Physics, the pupils each made a mini rocket then fired it up to 30m in the air using a high pressure launcher in the playground. It was a most enjoyable afternoon and the pupils from St Edward’s thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being in a science laboratory and carrying out exciting experiments. Mathematics Beyond The Classroom! On 19th November, the Mathematics Association is hosting a talk by James Grime from Bletchley Park on the Science and Mathematics of Codebreaking, including a demonstration of a genuine WWII Enigma machine. If you are interested in attending, please email Mrs Martin (anjali.martin@fhs-nw1. org.uk). We were very lucky to be the proud recipients of nine tickets to hear Professor Marcus du Sautoy, obe, talking about the Number Mysteries as part of a programme to mark the Prince’s Teaching Institute’s 10th Year Anniversary. We took nine Lower Fifth girls on 3rd July, the evening of our A level taster day. And our Lower Sixth girls went to hear Sir Roger Penrose, one of the world's most widely known mathematicians whose name will be forever linked with such giants as Hawking and Einstein, talk at the London Mathematics Society Popular lecture on On Attempting to Model the Mathematical Mind. The Young Shakespeare Company comes every year to do a similar introduction to the Third Year on their set text - A Midsummer Night's Dream - but this is the first time for a number of years that students have been able to enjoy a workshop on their set texts two years in a row.
“It was hilarious. I could see it again and again. They really helped me understand the story line.”
The girls loved it! They laughed uproariously at the depiction of Orsino as a kind of yoga-loving hippy, singing mantras to his love, and at Sir Toby Belch as a kind of drunken overgrown school boy repeatedly quaffing from his hip flask, but they also felt very sorry for Malvolio when Sir Toby tormented him to the brink of madness and they were keenly F r a n c i s

FHS Summer Camp 2012 There were thirty six of us: fourteen senior pupils from FHS; five FHS staff; five social workers; and twelve “looked after” children, a real mixture, but a wonderful end result! Welcome to FHS Summer Camp at Sayers Croft! What is FHS Summer Camp about? Our Sixth Formers volunteer to support, teach and mentor children who live not with their parents but with foster carers. It’s fun, challenging, exhilarating, demanding ... and FHS pupils find it immensely rewarding. For the “looked lfter” children, it is a remarkable week of achievement, learning new things and friendships forged over raft building, pond dipping and camp building.

The FHS girls were wonderful, giving their time and talents; the “looked after” children excelled in their commitment and energy, culminating in a fantastic talent show on the last evening. We left on 27th July after five great days. Thanks to fourteen sixth formers, to Mr Chiverton - whose idea this was back in 2006 - to the staff at Sayers Croft, and to Miss Gallagher, Miss Lowes, Mrs Hillier and Miss Farthing. Italian Trip to Sorrento A group of Upper Fourth and Lower Fifth students went to Sorrento, Italy, with me and Mrs Francisco from 12th to 16th July 2012. The girls attended lessons for a total of six hours over two days at a local language school. As part of our cultural visits, the girls also visited the archaeological site of Pompeii and they climbed Mount Vesuvius. Finally, they took part in numerous activities including an excursion to Positano, beach sport sessions and, of course, lots of pizza and ice cream tasting. The girls proved to be excellent linguists and enjoyed their time in Italy. The girls’ enthusiasm and behaviour were as impressive as they were delightful, Grazie Mille! Duke of Edinburgh’s Award During the summer holidays, while most of us were lapping up the Olympic spirit from the comfort of our lounge, four girls from the sixth form were getting set for their own test of endurance. Zoe Silkstone, Grace Whitehead, Emma Harrison and Sophie Watson battled the elements on their expeditions for the Gold Level of the award, and must be congratulated for doing so in truly wet conditions. The expeditions were held in the Peak District in late July and North Wales in mid August. The group did a fantastic job of navigating their way around
this ‘wild’ country while Mrs Wood observed them to ensure there were no problems. The girls impressed the assessor who reported back to me that they were an amazing group! Congratulations to you all. Bronze expeditions are going out in September and October and we wish all girls in the current Lower Fifth good luck for these. Spanish Department Trip to Cantabria At the beginning of the summer holidays, Miss Gustave and I took a group of ten Spanish students, between the ages of 15 and 17, on a trip to Cantabria in Northern Spain. We stayed in a typical mountain hotel in Santillana del Mar, a medieval village declared a cultural heritage site by UNESCO. The girls attended a language school in the famous university town of Santander, where they had Spanish lessons specifically tailored to their needs and level of ability. During our stay, we discovered the fascinating sites and scenery of the region, such as the traditional market town of Potes. We also took the cable car from Fuente De to the dizzying heights of the Picos de Europa. Of course, we could not miss the extraordinary Altamira Caves, after which the girls tried their hand at archery, as our prehistoric ancestors did before them. Luckily our lunch did not depend on our catches! On the way back, we visited the futuristic Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Sixth Form Drawing Day in Hastings On Saturday 15th September, the new Lower Sixth art students spent the day in Hastings with their teachers, sketching, photographing and collecting found objects from the sea shore, as inspiration for their coursework. The weather was balmy, the sea was sparkling and colourful fishing boats provided the backdrop for a perfect day, during which, the art department hastens to assure you, plenty of useful source material was gathered for work back in the studio! Parents' Association News Where did the summer go? It seems to disappear faster and faster each year! This term sees two of our major events - please put the dates in your diaries and come along; without your support we cannot exist or indeed thrive and raise funds for worthwhile causes in conjunction with the school. We have chosen this year to share our profits with Teenage Cancer Trust and the on-going charities we continue to support. The first event will take place on Wednesday 7th November 2012, we have invited a very eminent speaker, Kitty Hagenbach, MA Dip Psych, MA Child, Adolescent & Family Therapy with a Diploma in Transpersonal Psychotherapy, to speak to us all about handling stress - our children’s and our own. Please send in your RSVP forms by 31st October latest as from feedback so far, we believe this will be a popular event. To kick the evening off, we shall have a very short AGM (10 minutes) to bring you up to date with new committee members
and how we’re doing on your behalf. Saturday 17th November 2012 heralds in the Christmas period with our annual Christmas Fair - an event, as so many of you know, definitely not to miss. Last year we had bumper sales and attendance; we would like to beat that this year so please look out for the advertising and notices coming your way in the next few weeks. As ever, we are seeking bakers (for the sale of cakes in the café) and volunteers to help on the day. If you think you can contribute in any way, please let me know. In addition, your donations of chocolates, anything in a bottle, Lucky Jars and now vintage clothing will be gratefully received - please hand over as much as you can…

Thirds' Activity Day at Sayers Croft Our activity day began with a long but enjoyable coach journey from FHS to Surrey. With a little drizzle of rain outside, we all kept our fingers crossed that the sun would make an appearance during at least one activity. When we arrived,we were all split into different groups, each with an instructor and were taken off for our first adventure! My group headed towards the zip-wire. It turned out that for me and many of my group, the zip-wire was one of the most popular activities. All the groups had different activities to start off with. After our first activity we sat outside and had a picnic, the sun was shining and it was a great chance to chat and make new friends in different classes. Afterwards, we set off to another new challenge. My next task was rock climbing. We had to put our trust in our partners without being harnessed. Doing this gave us a sense of confidence. Then we were all harnessed for safety and ready to start. We all had an individual go to try it out. The second part to the rock climbing session involved a team effort.
Rosie and Gabby enjoying “Team games”
The last task of the day for my group was "ballista building" for which we were given some rope and wooden poles to create a sponge catapult. We were split into three groups: one of the groups was lucky enough to get the fort at the top of the hill but the other two groups had no choice but to put their catapults at the bottom. We had such a great time and enjoyed getting soaking wet! At the end of the day we all came back with so many stories to tell and new friendships made! We all had such a good time. Thank you to all the teachers for a fantastic day! Serena, Sophie, Katya and Savannah

Sports Day 2012
FHS Sports Report
The pressure was on this year to make Sports Day the unanimous, all-time number one event on the school calendar. The atmosphere was electric with the "zing" and "zap" of rounders balls being smashed into the outfield and footsteps sprinting over the grass. As ever, the most popular events of Sports Day were the throwing events where everybody can join in. The three-legged race and egg and spoon novelty proved once again to gather the biggest crowd and the thrills and spills were a-plenty! Rivalries between forms were settled for the year and once again the Staff proved their worth in the inaugural Staff v Sixth Form Rounders game.
The autumn term has started at a frenetic pace with our team and squad trials taking over the first couple of weeks of term. Thus the weekly fixtures have begun with much gusto. Our girls travelling to Sri Lanka on the Sports tour haven’t missed a beat and the extra weekly training sessions are paying dividends. We have also had two special Netball teams start intensive training for their upcoming GSA tournament, taking place over half term. With the Olympics and Paralympics still fondly in our hearts, it is easy to remember also the wonderful summer of sports at FHS which set the sporting stage. Sports Day 2012 superseded all expectation and was a perfect finale to a whole year of FHS Olympic events. Looking ahead, the new Thirds should be on the lookout for the Hockey trials sign-up sheet, which will go up in the week before the half term. Thirds trials start the first Monday back at lunchtime and all are welcome! And it will not be long before the Inter-form Hockey competition week starts up in December; spectators are most welcome to all PE extra-curricular events!
Many individual performances stood out, but the community spirit and form pride was the real highlight. It was fantastic to see each and every form supporting their own Olympic country and judging by the photos, they really produced a great deal of national patriotism! Many thanks to all of the students, staff, parents and visitors who came along to enjoy a fun filled day. Special thanks must be given to all of the PE staff: Miss Mahieu; Miss Gallagher; Miss Laytham; Mrs Drummond and Mrs Bain, without whom the day could not and would not have happened.
Miss J Tucker Head of PE Department
Swimming Gala Interlaced with the end of term excitement was the Inter-form Swimming Gala. There were some stunning individual and class performances across all of the year-groups, and the battle for the ‘Open’ Cups was down to mere milliseconds. The Inter-form Water Polo and Volleyball competitions for the Upper Fourth and Lower Fifth were also a close and exciting, if not contentious battle between the year levels. Congratulations to all of our winners and for everyone else – training starts now for next year!
