Looking Ahead—Exploring RFID and Related Emerging Technologies for Construction
Ed Koch, Automation Specialist and Software Product Manager, Bechtel Francis Rabuck, Director, Technology Research, Bentley Systems © 2008 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
As the construction and facility-management industries begin to deploy RFID solutions, new issues beyond the selection of readers and tags begin to emerge. This session will explore some of these emerging issues, including infrastructure setup (communication options to consider in an open environment), alternative mobile devices as readers (digital pens and tablets, interactive hands-free or head-mounted mobile devices, and cell phone readers), and unique issues involving rugged and metal-friendly tags (including ATEX certification and data standards).

What’s Ahead for RFID (and related technologies) •
RFID is just one part of Auto-ID options – Barcode/Augmented Reality/Image Recognition
•
Wireless Options – New Speeds and Feeds
•
RTLS – More Options, but – DASH 7 – come convergence
•
Alternative I/O devices, methods – Golden-I – Cell Phones

Auto-Id - 2D Bar Codes, Augmented Reality, Image Recognition
• 2D Bar Codes have existed for years • One way to connect the Physical World to the Digital World • Camera phones read the codes and execute an action – phone a friend, send a text message, or open a URL link • Augmented Reality works the same way – but includes orientation of code and the result is the display of a 3D object on screen • Try Esquire Magazine with a webcam
