To celebrate Georgetown’s and Williamson County’s 175th birthdays this year, citizens gathered to add a new mural on the side of the county’s tax office building. “You’re part of history now!” one lady called out to the group of painters. It was indeed a memorable experience getting to join the community in contributing to our town’s art legacy.

From murals to arts festivals to community theater to literary hubs, Georgetown is home to a thriving arts and culture scene. It’s one that drew Christelle Bois to film an episode of The Story of Art in America in April. You can read about her experience in this issue as well as our town’s journey to becoming a cultural district and how it has grown as an arts and culture destination.

Speaking of films, our What Makes Texas, Texas section spotlights the many movies that have and continue to put our state on the film map.

Georgetown'’s Thriving Arts and Culture Scene

In 2013, the Georgetown Art Center opened alongside myriad arts and culture attractions. The city's Arts and Culture Board saw an opportunity to leverage this development and applied for our community to become a cultural district, with the goal of driving economic growth in the downtown area. The designation also enables Georgetown to be eligible for additional grant funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts. Now one of 52 cultural districts across the state, Georgetown continues to make its mark on the Texas arts and culture scene with a rich mix of arts offerings, from public art that tells stories and honors history to art galleries, educational programs, and festivals.

CULTURAL DISTRICT JOURNEY

The Arts and Culture Board sent the Texas Commission on the Arts a letter of intent describing Georgetown’s plans for the district and how its arts offerings will play a pivotal role in driving economic development. “These districts can become focal points for generating business, attracting tourists, stimulating cultural development, and fostering civic pride,” Georgetown Arts and Culture Program Manager Amanda Still says.

The most successful cultural districts, TCA Executive Director Gary Gibbs says, have a rich mix of arts offerings within walking distance — galleries, theaters, etc. — along with retail shops, restaurants, and lodging. “Georgetown has these assets located within the charming downtown Square, which continues to attract visitors and members of the community.”

Amanda agrees that Georgetown checks all the boxes when it comes to the TCA’s criteria for a successful cultural district, including a unique social and historical identity, arts institutions and events that serve as cornerstones of the community, and robust backing from the community.

FLOURISHING ARTS AND CULTURE HUB

The TCA provided critical support and guidance to the Georgetown Arts and Culture Board in bringing their program vision to life. They presented the city a framework and offered valuable resources during the planning process. Since being designated as a cultural district the city has received $118,000 in grants, which has funded infrastructure projects to provide space for arts and culture programming and events.

Thanks to TCA funding, the space between the Grace Heritage Center and Sweet Lemon Kitchen has been transformed into a gathering place known as the South Main Arts District for public art, arts and culture programs, art strolls, and the new South Main Arts Festival. Today, the district has evolved into a thriving community hub, drawing surrounding businesses and residents alike.

The Arts and Culture Board’s goal for Georgetown’s arts and culture scene is three-fold:

 strengthen relationships with arts organizations and businesses,

 increase economic opportunities for the arts in the community and attract more arts-based businesses to the Cultural District, and

 add spaces for arts education and performing arts facilities.

Painting Georgetown

From honoring military heroes and preserving history to welcoming newcomers and showcasing our signature flower, Georgetown’s murals are part of the Arts and Culture Board’s vision of building a vibrant arts community. “Murals are a way to tell an important story and honor history and culture,” Amanda says. Another reason is simply that “people love murals, and that’s what they want to see! Once we established a permitting process for murals, businesses and property owners jumped at the opportunity to invest in a mural for their building.”

Some of the most popular murals around town include “Greetings from Georgetown, Texas” at Gus’s Drug and “Preserving History” on the back of City Hall and adjacent to the African American Shotgun House. One recent mural is featured on the side of the county’s tax office building in celebration of Georgetown and Williamson County’s 175th birthday in March.

“I frequently get requests from visual artists regarding community space for meetings, workshops, and art classes, as well as from performing artists and musicians for a large performance space,” she says. “Our community facilities are currently at capacity for these types of arts activities, and the Arts and Culture Board loves to add new spaces to our Georgetown arts and culture scene.”

Georgetown Cultural District

The Georgetown Cultural District covers the 40-block area of the downtown around the Courthouse Square, with arts and cultural attractions like the Art Center, Palace Theatre, Williamson Museum, Georgetown Public Library, Grace Heritage Center, Shotgun House Museum, downtown art galleries, and shops featuring handcrafted items. Balancing Life & Scaffolding for Art's Sake

Sarah Blankenship’s days have their ups and downs – literally, and few people have a voicemail message that reminds callers, “I’m often on scaffolding and can’t get to my phone.” But for this well-known muralist and sign painter, the physical demands, continual test of creativity, and required patience are all worth it.

We asked Sarah to share the ins and outs of muraling and what it takes to bring her works of art to life.

What is the difference between painting on canvas or paper compared to a building wall?

Setting: For canvas/paper, you can execute in the comfort of your home studio. You can also control the temperature, where you sit/stand, and who is around you. For wall murals, the location and surrounding environment change all the time. For exterior wall murals, expect changing weather conditions, visibility constraints of daylight hours, and standing for hours at a time.

Surface texture: Canvas is stretched across a wood frame and there isn't a solid surface behind it, which creates some movement when you paint. Walls are a solid surface, which requires less of a delicate brush stroke. The paint that adheres best can vary on different wall textures/materials and the approach to painting can differ.

Subject matter: For a wall mural, my goal is to help achieve the vision of the business or homeowner, not necessarily mine. There is a lot more flexibility to simply create what you like as an artist on canvas/paper.

Does painting on buildings require different skills or techniques?

If you can paint small, you can learn how to paint big. The biggest difference is scale, speed, brush size, and ladders/scaffolding. You have to cover a lot more ground in a quick amount of time. A roller or a larger brush — the kind you use to paint house trim — is often needed to cover a large expanse, rather than small detail brushes more common in canvas painting.

What is your process from start to finish? ? ? ?

5. Painting: that’s the best part for me!

7. Wrap up: touch ups/adjustments. Make sure client is happy.

Does being a muralist require any certain training?

You don't need certain training. I think people are born with artistic skill and many people out there already have the talents to paint a mural. What you do need is trial and error time with the best execution, materials, and methods that work for you. Practice in your home or a friend's home, or volunteer on a community mural.

I did attend Savannah College of Art and Design and I know my classes on color theory, drawing, art history, computer art, etc. were helpful. What my college lacked was business classes. I've had to figure out how to write estimates, do invoicing, get business insurance, do my taxes and much more. I think business classes would be helpful to anyone looking to work for themselves in any industry.

Every muralist approaches their process slightly different. For me, computer design is essential to my process, so training in Photoshop and Illustrator was very helpful. Knowledge of Photoshop also allows me to quickly adjust scale and designs on site if my drawing doesn't perfectly match up to on-site conditions.

How long does a typical project take?

Logos are often a day project, most murals take a week, larger murals are typically two weeks.

How do you scale your designs onto a wall in order to get accurate guidelines to work from?

It depends on the space and the surrounding environment. A projector is the easiest, quickest, and the most common way I transfer the design from the computer to the wall. If there is not enough room or site conditions aren't conducive, I use the grid method, free-hand, stencils, tracing paper transfers, or a tape measure and level.

Are there any tips you can share for beginning muralists?

Sign painting workshops are helpful for lettering.

The level is your best tool for straight lettering.

Practice with sample size or discounted mis-tint paints from your local paint store.

You learn as you go, don't be afraid to get out there and try!

Running a one-woman business was a conscious decision for Sarah. Her goal was to create a less complicated, more free-flowing environment in which she could devote herself to the reason behind it all – painting.

Annual Texas Bach Festival Returns in June

In just five years, the Texas Bach Festival has gained a devoted following, local business support, and generous grants and donations. Despite its substantive growth, Artistic Director Barry Scott Williamson recognizes the need to build on the festival’s success by continuing to bring a transformative classical music experience to Central Texas. "We are making headway, but years 6 through 10 present a unique challenge," he says. "This is the time people say, ‘Yeah,

we've heard of TBF, but what will you bring us next year?' In this new phase, it's vital we continue to exhibit exceptional musical quality. We must keep putting the community first and also give our musicians a multi-faceted array of great performance opportunities."

ROCK Celebrates 25 Years Barn Dance Raises $500,000

A testament to the nonprofit’s impact on countless lives over the last 25 years, this year’s Barn Dance raised more than $500,000 to further Ride On Center for Kids’ efforts to provide equine-assisted services to children, adults, and veterans with physical and cognitive challenges. “We are incredibly blessed and grateful to everyone who supported us this year,” marketing manager Tina Clary says. “We recognize there are hundreds and hundreds of people who have given blood, sweat, and tears to make ROCK happen. At the end of the day, it’s humbling to realize that lives are changing because of that work and that power. We’re so grateful for all the donors and sponsors who have shown up and supported ROCK’s mission and healing through horses for 25 years. We are excited about what another 25 years will bring.”

DANCING AND GIVING BACK

The Barn Dance is an annual fundraiser that typically brings in a third or more of the organization’s budget and enables ROCK’s team to continue doing everything from feeding horses to maintaining the facilities to keeping the lights on. This year, the event drew about 900 guests, staff, and volunteers who enjoyed a variety of entertainment. Former County Judge Dan Gattis and Daytripper host Chet Garner emceed the program, which included the Sun City Cloggers and Texas Jam Band, with a special appearance by George Strait’s son, Bubba.

One of the highlights of the night, Tina says, was when ROCK founder Nancy Krenek described how her journey came full circle after seeing her grandson become a ROCK participant. “She didn’t imagine her family would someday need ROCK. When you think about ROCK, it’s more than just one person who comes. It affects the whole family. It affects people down the line in ways that we can’t even guess.”

Save the date for next year’s Barn Dance, April 6, 2024, and also their next fundraiser, the Cowgirl Bruncheon, on November 4. For those wanting to donate time, “Rocketeers” enjoy a variety of volunteering opportunities.

Art in America: Spotlight on the Georgetown

To ensure an interesting mix of on-screen characters, she asked Arts and Culture Program Manager Amanda Still to send her a broad but inclusive list of 10-20 artists. “I wanted all the community represented, some female and male artists, to showcase the most diversity—in terms of art and community—as possible.” Ann Evans, a reference librarian at the Georgetown library, will be the featured historian, and readers who tune in to season three of The Story of Art in America will be the first to see which Georgetown artists made the cut.

ART JOURNEY

Christelle’s filmmaking journey began when she realized she had an emotional need for creative expression. “Art, for me, was for very skilled, educated people. I thought art was definitely not for me,” she says. “It took me 40 years to realize I needed to express myself.”

After exploring the story of art in America in the usual places like Chicago and New York, filmmaker Christelle Bois decided to point her camera at a destination not typically known for its art – Texas. “I really want to discover those places that we usually disregard in terms of art.”

From painting to music, sculpture to murals, poetry to dance, pottery to storytelling, The Story of Art in America docuseries explores how art is, and always has been, an essential part of America’s social fabric. In the first two seasons, viewers followed along as Christelle traversed the west coast and southeast and interviewed talented artists from all walks of life. Last month, she visited a mix of 10 small towns and large cities across Texas: Dallas, Canyon, Odessa, Alpine, Sonora, Georgetown, Salado, Corsicana, Texarkana, and Dennison.

She began her personal journey in 2018, displaying black and white cityscape photos from her globetrotting adventures at an art exhibit in New York. She was subsequently moved to discover the impact of art on others and took to the road to interview artists, art teachers, museum curators, and everyday Americans from New York to California. The resulting documentary, Americart 2019, was well received and inspired Christelle and her team to expand it into a docuseries.

Art Scene

The goal of The Story of Art in America, she says, is to demonstrate that art is accessible to everyone. “It's not behind glass. It can touch everyone, and everyone can experience it." She also hopes viewers will be inspired to not just talk about art, but also the people behind the art. “I want to feel the emotion and discover what it takes to be an artist — what art is in terms of humanity, not technicity.”

Palace Theatre Focuses on Inclusive Entertainment

When it comes to creating a truly inclusive and adaptive theater experience, few venues can match the commitment and dedication of Georgetown’s Palace Theatre. This outstanding keystone of the downtown Square has developed several programs that cater specifically to individuals who have special needs and provide an environment that is welcoming, accommodating, and comfortable for people of all ages. With a range of initiatives that include sensory-friendly performances, adaptive classes, assistive technology, and movement programs, the Palace Theatre has taken important steps to ensure everyone can enjoy the magic of live theater.

CURTAINS UP ON ACCESSIBILITY SENSORY PERFORMANCES

Thanks to Trina Sherman, adaptive theater coordinator and special needs mom who dreamed of inclusion theater, and generous donations from the community, the Palace Theatre holds free, shortened productions of family-friendly musicals for special needs children and their families. Adapted for little ones who struggle to keep still, or are bothered by loud noises, these performances are shorter, include an ASL interpreter, and a hearing induction loop.

AUDIO DESCRIPTIONS

The Palace Theatre also provides verbal commentary for visually impaired theatergoers, which enables them to enjoy performances independently, without relying on a sighted companion. Audio description provides rich and vivid descriptions of the action on stage during scenes without dialogue, such as fights or kissing. These narratives seamlessly blend with the performance, allowing individuals with sight challenges to follow the plot, incorporate facial expressions, and appreciate the costumes and scenery.

INDUCTIVE HEARING LOOP

The Palace Theatre also offers a unique and innovative service that caters to those with hearing impairments. The main auditorium is equipped with cutting-edge technology that transmits sound directly from the sound board to any hearing aid fitted with a t-coil. This makes it easy for users to activate the t-coil option and enjoy an enhanced theater experience, with the option to turn off the microphone in their hearing aid to eliminate ambient noise in the auditorium. The theater also allows patrons to check out a “loaner” unit at any performance to ensure everyone can experience the excitement of live theater.

YOU! ARE THE STAR DANCE FOR PD®

For those living with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers, the theater offers a weekly one-hour class, made possible by a grant from the Scott & White Clinic. Led by a professionally trained instructor, the program provides participants with an engaging, stimulating, and creative opportunity to explore movement and music while promoting healing and wellness. The benefits of the program include enhanced flexibility and increased confidence. But beyond the physical benefits, the class also works to stimulate mental activities and focus attention on the eyes, ears, and touch as tools for movement and balance.

ADAPTIVE THEATER FOR ALL

Research has shown the communication and processing skills that are integral to success in theater can have a profound impact on social, emotional, and academic development, and the Palace team is on a mission to bring those benefits to everyone in the community. Thanks to generous support from several local organizations, the Palace Theatre offers vacation theater camps that teach basic techniques and combinations in dance, acting, and music. These camps also provide opportunities for children to learn the art of theater through games, exercises, and rehearsals — all of which culminates in a family-friendly play for a live audience. The Palace Theatre is committed to making these programs available to all special needs children at an affordable cost. Financial need and educational scholarships are available, ensuring that everyone in our community can experience the transformative power of theater education.

Unleash Your Love for Animals as a Shelter Volunteer

For Abigail Counts, volunteering at the Wilco Regional Animal Shelter has been a rewarding way to give back to the place that not only helped her find a furry friend but also raised funds when her dog needed surgery.

When Abigail adopted her from WCRAS in 2019, Bella Bree was nearly 8 years old and had been in and out of the shelter for five years. Many of the volunteers and staff knew and adored their long-time lovable, so when Bella Bree needed surgery, one of the volunteers set up a fundraiser for her that received donations from many members of the shelter community. The nonprofit Fans of Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter also provided financial assistance to help Bella Bree get the surgery she needed.

HAVE A HEART FOR HELPING?

Volunteer opportunities abound at the shelter and one of them is bound to be in your wheelhouse:

• Walk dogs

• Socialize dogs and cats

• Foster animals

• Clean kennels, wash dishes and laundry, handle administrative tasks

• Sort and organize donations

• Work at off-site events

• Help with photography and videos of shelter animals

• Assist with special projects; e.g., assembling shelves, data entry, and research

“It was incredible,” Abigail says. "She passed away suddenly six months ago, and I could think of no better way to honor her memory than to help out at the shelter that brought us together. The volunteer community is amazing and welcomed me with open arms.”

Now Abigail stops by almost every day to walk the dogs, a volunteer task she says is crucial since WCRAS is frequently over capacity and relies on volunteers to make sure the dogs get a break from their kennels every day. During their outdoor adventures, she takes pictures of them for social media and spends time getting to know their personalities to help match them with the right families. “The more we know about the dogs, the better we can advocate for them.”

Her favorite part of volunteering is connecting with so many amazing animals. “Sometimes it’s bittersweet when they’re adopted because I miss them, but I know they are so much happier in homes.”

Volunteers are always needed to provide extra hands and hours to shelter dogs and cats, Community Programs Coordinator April Peiffer says. “The more people there are to care for these deserving creatures, the better job we can do for each and every one of them. Volunteers get a lot from the experience as well, as volunteering here is incredibly rewarding. Ask any shelter volunteer what a joy it is to see their favorites move on to loving new homes, and you will see a face light up in a way you won't soon forget.”

Adopter Turned Volunteer

After adopting a puppy from the shelter in 2019, Natalie Aguilar was inspired to help other furry friends find forever homes. “I learned all the ways I could volunteer and help my community and wanted to give back doing something I enjoyed.”

Natalie serves wherever she is needed. She cleans at the shelter, fosters and promotes adoptable dogs on various websites, and helps with fundraisers, offsite dog adoption events, and foster and volunteer appreciation events.

She loves being surrounded by other animal lovers who truly care about the pets in their care. “They go above and beyond to make sure the shelter is clean and all the animals are taken care of. Just one great example — when it's icy or snowy outside, shelter staff will sleep overnight on cots up at the shelter to make sure there are no delays in morning care due to weather. They are truly the best shelter around!”

Discover Texas' Small-Town Festivals

Small-town festivals are an essential part of Texan culture, celebrating everything from local history and ethnicity to music, food, and art. Each year, hundreds of small towns across the state host festivals that draw neighbors together, with the additional incentive to entice us to visit and spend a few dollars to support local businesses. These festivals also offer an opportunity to experience the unique charm and hospitality of Texas while also providing a platform for artisans, artists, and musicians to showcase their talents.

Outside the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas” there is no shortage of festivities to explore in the Lone Star State. This month, have a closer look at some family friendly options near Georgetown and what makes them so special.

FROM SPOOF TO SUCCESS

The history of that quirky Oatmeal Festival starts with the typical Texas type of moxie that, quite literally, put Oatmeal on the map. At its founding in the 1840s, the community was a group of German settlers living near Oatmeal Creek. Many say the name was an Americanization of the family that owned the area’s first gristmill — Othneil. It did have a post office by 1853 but, for decades, official state maps did not include Oatmeal because there was no highway intersection.

Finally, in 1978, a resident named Ken Odiorne had a brilliant idea to spoof the Texas chili cookoff cliché and create a unique event that would draw visitors and attention to his little community. As Oatmeal had only 20 residents, Ken wrote to all the major producers of oatmeal cereal for assistance. National Oats, the maker of 3 Minutes Oats, responded and the Oatmeal Festival was born.

GET YOUR SPOON READY

The festival has become a beloved tradition and every Labor Day, rain or shine, draws visitors from all over the state to enjoy oatmeal-themed treats, games, and live music. In addition to putting the small town back on the map, it raises money for local initiatives, including college scholarships for high school students, and construction of a community center in Oatmeal and open-air pavilion in Bertram.

Just 30 minutes from Georgetown, save the date, September 30 - October 1, for this annual testament to the ingenuity and humor of small-town Texans. This year's event features the Miss Oatmeal Pageant, live music, barbecue dinner, live auction, pet parade, and the grand parade, as well as kids zone and vendor booths.

TURKEY, TOURISM, AND TRADITION

Cuero has a rich agricultural history and an annual festival to celebrate the farm product that made it famous: the turkey. In 1908, the first processing plant opened on the edge of town, making it easier for farmers to deliver flocks to a central location for processing and shipping. Since it was 1908, there weren’t any trucks around so getting the birds to town was no easy feat. Resourceful farmers herded the turkeys on foot like a cattle drive and the annual trek through the streets began to draw visitors from far and wide.

And the crowds grew. In 1912, the city hosted the first official Turkey Trot and more than 30,000 people flocked to Cuero to see the spectacle of 18,000 turkeys being herded down Main Street snapping up corn scattered in the streets to keep them moving. The town leaders added agricultural shows, a carnival, big band dances, a football game, floats and gowns decorated with turkey feathers, and the crowning of the first Turkey Queen, Minnie Lee Mangham.

Legend has it that visiting entrepreneurs were struck by the days-long population explosion and noticed merchants renting out rooms and selling hot meals. They suggested local business leaders create an event around it and the idea for the Cuero Turkeyfest was born.

With the turkey industry slowly moving out of town and turkeys themselves unable to

march in the parades anymore, the original Turkey Trot race bowed out in 1972 but a committee formed to keep the festival and the Turkeyfest continued, sans round-up, with many turkey-themed activities and contests.

Save the date, October 13-15, 2023, and witness the "World's Largest Turkey Fryer" just a two-hour drive from Georgetown . Visitors will also enjoy live music performances, carnival rides, a turkey calling contest, turkey race, and more.

CZECH OUT FLATONIA

The Czhilispiel Festival has been a beloved annual event in Flatonia since 1973 and is a great way to experience the unique culture and hospitality of the area. The festival's name is a playful Czech take on the word chili and the German word spiel, meaning play. The 2023 festival is a family-friendly event that takes place October 2729 and includes a pageant, 5K, and Halloween costume contest.

Flatonia was established in 1873 and named for pioneer merchant F.W. Flato. It was known as a melting pot for immigrants from all over western Europe, including English, German, Bohemian, Czech, and Italian. Today, while still a small town, it is a well-known spot for train watchers, with one of Texas' longest-standing manually operated railroad switching towers featuring North-South and East-West cross rails.

The festival began as a fundraiser to support a local Flatonia student's medical school education. At the time, Flatonia did not have a doctor, so the community organized a Czech heritage festival and chili cook-off, Czhilispiel, to raise money for his tuition. The student agreed to serve the community for five years after completing medical

school, but ended up staying longer and made a lasting impact on the town's medical care. Today, Czhilispiel continues to use proceeds from the festival to support scholarships and community services.

One of the main attractions of the Czhilispiel Festival is the czhili cook-off, which draws participants from all over Texas to compete for the title of best chili. Other food vendors offer a variety of Czech and Texan cuisine, including kolaches, sausages, and barbecue. In addition to the food, the Czhilispiel Festival features live music performances, carnival rides, and a variety of games and contests, such as the young farmers egg toss, tricycle races, and jalapeño eating contest. There is also a parade, beer garden, and marketplace featuring local artisans and craftspeople.

A HOLLYWOOD DESTINATION

Texans won't deny the #1 and #2 rankings that California and New York hold as the states with the most television and movie projects; that's where most of the movie companies live, after all. Fortunately for Texans, our state ranks number three and we don't live in either of those other states.

In 2023, according to IMDb.com, Texas has been the setting for 22,397 movies and shows. Within Texas, the most filmed cities were Austin (5,160), Dallas (3,879), Houston (3,159), San Antonio (1,429), Fort Worth (898), El Paso (423), Arlington (358), Denton (318), Plano (200), and Corpus Christi (197).

WELCOME TO TEXAS

On the business side, there are 170 Film Friendly Certified communities in Texas and the governor's Film Friendly Texas program is working to add more. The program involves certification and marketing by the Texas Film Commission. Communities in the program receive training and guidance about media industry standards, best practices, and how to effectively accommodate media production in their cities and communities. It is a valuable resource that helps maintain Texas as a premier destination for media production. Close to home, Williamson County has eight certified communities.

For the creatives, nothing compares to the history and romance that set Texas apart in many ways, and none more so than in entertainment. The distinctive scenery and landscapes, colorful history, and unique character of Texans themselves have provided plenty of inspiration and content for filmmakers. More than a setting for classic westerns, Texas provides a full spectrum of angst-filled teens, big city business, and quirky folks who make Texas so "Texas" all over the world.

CLASSICS AND MODERN BLOCKBUSTERS

 Giant (1956): One of the most iconic Texas films ever made, this epic drama starred Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson, and was largely shot in Marfa and other locations throughout the state.

 Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): Filmed in Round Rock, Bastrop, and Leander. The owners of the film's gas station in Bastrop held a grand reopening in 2016. There are four creepy little cabins on the property where fans can spend a night. There's a sign out front that says, "We Slaughter Barbecue."

 Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, Hud: All based on books by Larry McMurtry.

 Urban Cowboy (1980): Set in Houston, showcased the honky-tonk culture, started the modern wave of cowboy fashion, and made Gilley's bar famous.

 Blood Simple (1984): A Coen brothers' thriller about a jealous husband, filmed in Pflugerville and Hutto.

 Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985): Hopefully people aren't still looking for his bike in the Alamo's basement.

 Dazed and Confused (1993): Matthew McConaughey's breakout hit. (Alright, alright, alright!)

 What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993): Set in the fictional town of Endora, Iowa, but filming was done in the Manor area. The family house was filmed on Hodde Lane outside of Pflugerville and the famous water town is located on Old US-290.

 Selena (1997): The biographical drama about the life and career of Selena Quintanilla-Perez, the "Queen of Tejano Music," was filmed largely in Corpus Christi and other Texas locations.

 Office Space (1999): The Initech Office is real, but goes by a different name; filmed in Austin at 4120 Freidrich Lane. The flair-requiring restaurant where Jennifer Aniston works, Chotchkie's, is now a Chase bank in the Arboretum in Northwest Austin.

 Friday Night Lights (2004): Based on the popular book and TV series, this movie was shot on location in Odessa, Texas, and captured the high stakes and intense pressure of high school football in the state.

 No Country for Old Men (2007): Another Coen Brothers film set and largely shot in West Texas, featuring stunning landscapes and gritty, intense action.

 True Grit (2010): The Coen brothers seem to like Texas. Their remake follows a young girl seeking revenge against the man who killed her father. She hires a pasthis-prime lawman to help track the murderer. Along the way, the two team up with a Texas Ranger.

 Boyhood (2014): Boyhood is famous primarily because it was shot over the course of 12 years. The film features the same cast over the years and follows a boy as he works his way through boyhood, enjoying the highs and dealing with the lows. Dialogue scenes were shot at Dart Bowl on 5700 Grover Ave. Two South Congress venues are featured: Continental Club and Magnolia Cafe South.

 Also Starring Austin (2018): This meta-movie is all about lights, camera, Austin. A documentary about the movies made in and around Central Texas. Features filmmakers who share their experiences of working in the city. The film even boasts an appearance from Willie Nelson.

 9-1-1: Lone Star (2020– ): A New York firefighter relocates to Austin, Texas with his son, where he works to save people's lives while trying to solve his own personal problems.

TOWNS AROUND

While you may not recognize Georgetown in every movie and TV show, our city has 63 entries in the database, from major motion pictures to shorts. Popular projects include the iconic "Friday Night Lights" television show and, in film, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?", "Johnny B. Goode," and "Varsity Blues." While not in Texas' top 10, it's worth mentioning that "Bernie," starring Matthew McConaughey, was filmed here and also featured his mom, Kay, who was a resident of Sun City at the time.

"Temple Grandin" was filmed in Schwertner and Temple herself helped redesign the facility at the ranch where filming took place.

Hutto has been featured on film 20 times, and last February wrapped initial filming for a new Nicole Kidman project for HBO based on the true story about a woman accused of killing her friend with an ax in Wylie, Texas in 1980. Many scenes were filmed at the Historic Williamson County Courthouse in Georgetown.

Known for its late 19th- and early 20th-century architecture, Bartlett was the site for the filming of movies including "The Stars Fell on Henrietta" and "The Newton Boys," as well as two seasons of the NBC television drama, "Revolution."

In February 2019, Round Rock had to close a few roads while "Fear the Walking Dead" filmed part of season 4. Take a trip down memory lane with the Texas Classics Film Trail, highlighting 25 film destinations from some of Texas' most iconic projects.

FestivalWithoutFoods the Lines

Texas is the perfect place for year-round festivals and fairs. From pulled pork and sausages to funnel cakes and fried Oreos, the food at these events is a big part of the experience and, with some creativity and a little bit of skill, you can DIY a few of the classics. These inspired recipes are great for summer gatherings or to satisfy your craving for a festival vibe at home.

Grilled Corn with Chipotle Lime Butter

• 4 ears of corn, husked

• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

• 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder

• 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

 Preheat grill to medium-high.

• 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• Zest of 1 lime

• Juice of 1/2 lime

 In a small bowl, combine butter, chipotle powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, lime zest, and lime juice. Mix well.

 Grill corn about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until cooked and lightly charred.

 Once the corn is cooked, transfer to a plate and immediately spread the chipotle lime butter over each ear. Serve immediately.

 Chipotle powder and lime juice to suit your taste.

 If you can't find chipotle powder, you can use a chipotle pepper in adobo sauce instead. Simply mince the pepper and mix it with the butter and other spices.

 If you don't have a grill, you can also cook the corn in a grill pan on the stovetop or under the broiler in the oven.

 Adjust the amount of chipotle powder and lime juice to suit your taste.

Walking around Salad

When it comes to mixing salads in a cup for an outdoor event, it's important to choose ingredients that won't wilt or get soggy too quickly. These ingredients work well in a portable salad cup:

 Cherry tomatoes: A great option because they hold their shape and flavor and won't turn mushy too quickly.

 Cucumber: A refreshing addition to any salad and holds up well in a cup.

 Carrots: Shredded or grated; a nice way to add color and crunch.

 Bell peppers: Hold up well and add a nice crunch and flavor.

 Radishes: Sliced or chopped; a great way to add a peppery kick.

 Nuts or seeds: Adding nuts or seeds like almonds, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds can add a crunch to your salad.

 Cheese: Adding crumbled cheese like feta or goat cheese can add flavor to your salad.

 Dressing: You can pack a small container of dressing separately and add it just before eating.

A simple recipe you can mix in a cup:

• 1 cup chopped mixed greens

• 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

• 1/2 cup chopped cucumber

• 1/4 cup shredded carrot

• 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (such as basil or parsley)

• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinaigrette

In large bowl, combine greens, tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, crumbled feta cheese, and herbs. Drizzle vinaigrette over the salad and toss to combine. Spoon the salad into a plastic cup with a lid or a small resealable bag. Pack a fork or spoon for a portable, healthy meal on-the-go.

 You can adjust the amount of ingredients based on your personal preference.

 Consider adding some protein, like grilled chicken or chickpeas, to make the salad more filling.

Old Bay Kettle Corn

• 1/4 cup popcorn kernels

• 1/4 cup granulated sugar

• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

• 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning

• Salt to taste

 Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add three kernels to the pot and wait for them to pop, which indicates the oil is hot enough to add the rest of the popcorn.

 Add remaining popcorn kernels to the pot and sprinkle the sugar evenly over the kernels. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and shake the pot to distribute the sugar evenly.

 As the popcorn starts to pop, continue to shake the pot to prevent the popcorn from burning. Once the popping slows down to a few seconds between pops, remove the pot from the heat and sprinkle the Old Bay seasoning over the popcorn.

 Cover the pot and shake it to distribute the seasoning evenly. Add salt to taste and serve.

 You can adjust the amount of Old Bay seasoning and salt to suit your taste preferences.

 Be sure to use a large pot with a tight-fitting lid to prevent the popcorn from spilling out.

 Kettle corn can be stored in an airtight container for up to several days.

Dear Mom...

Ican still see you standing at the sink, washing dishes by hand, and thinking myself clever to have figured out that the ever-present stains on the hips of your house clothes came from the thousands of handwipes there. Always too busy multitasking to remember where the dishtowel landed last. Cooking, cleaning, helping with homework, and stretching that coiled telephone cord across the kitchen, keeping up with dozens of friends who were likely doing the same things in their own kitchens. The cord seemed to be perpetually at runningkid-throat height and resulted in many a comical, feet-up Looney Tunes moment. Ah, childhood.

I still marvel, though, that with all your problem solving, I still get text photos of your foot when you try to pick up a Facetime call. But I also envy your life because I can’t think of two friends I’ve had the time (and mental space) to casually chat up on the phone in the last few months.

I remember being so annoyed during most of my childhood for the free labor we kids provided. It remains not funny that the answer to, “Why can’t we get a dishwasher?” was always, “Don’t need one, I have four of them.”

I would always have preferred to be watching afternoon reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Bugs Bunny rather than peeling potatoes or hanging clothes on the line outside. And what kid in her right mind would have been happy to give up a Saturday afternoon in the basement ironing, the only distraction a television that didn’t have a picture unless you banged on the screen to make the tubes light back up? I feel like scolding my younger self for not appreciating the peace of a single task in a quiet room and the simple sense of “doing for my family.”

I also recall a recent dinner gathering and the shock and awe of those who couldn’t believe I know how to do things like grow food and snake a drain. I can only wish that my son would sit by my side for hours today in idle fascination and random conversation while I make strawberry jelly from berries we picked ourselves, cut patterns for sundresses, or wallpaper the kitchen.

I remember being awakened in the middle of the night to take medicine and it didn’t occur to me that you must have set an alarm, without complaint, to wake yourself at 2am to make sure I didn’t miss a pill. I remember how hard I tried to please you, and how much I wanted you at every game, play, and piano recital, because I knew the praise was already forthcoming and I couldn’t wait to hear it. None of us thought to thank you for handing us your change every Sunday so we could all have something to put in the collection basket when it went by.

We made fun of your crazy hats and weird orange lipstick even if it was the 70s. We laughed at your bad puns and intentional goofs to test our grammar and history facts. And the photos of the six of us in matching homemade tank tops at Kings Dominion (so you could see us in a crowd) would likely have been mildly viral in a later time. But even today, I make an effort to be funny or silly because your laughs are genuine, and you are easily filled with joy.

Here’s the thing, Nance. I am only now old enough to recognize the value and utter uniqueness of growing up with a mom who was raised with Depression-era values. I still save bread bag ties and mend my clothes. I often have a moment of guilty entitlement when I realize I filled up my whole grocery cart without adding up the prices in my head. I remember the dignity you always showed when you handed me items to take back to the shelves because we didn't have enough money that day.

Perhaps neither of us realized it at the time, but I am so grateful for the self-reliance that came, via osmosis, through the chores and all the “mom’s little helper” times. I am happy to be a link in a thousand generations of folk wisdom that binds me to all those moms before us.

For my part, I'll probably have to settle for sharing my AI search engine tricks over a Zoom call to help my son navigate the digital era and hope he might stop by for homemade fried chicken once in a while.

Boot Scootin’ at San Gabriel Park

A sea of denim and cowboy boots filled San Gabriel Park during the Two Step Inn Festival, which drew about 60,000 country music lovers in April. “We are thrilled Georgetown’s first, large festival in San Gabriel Park went so well,” Georgetown Parks and Recreation Director Kimberly Garrett says. “The production firm was an excellent partner, and several city departments worked together to put on a wildly successful event. The feedback we’ve received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.”

The Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation expect to receive over $500,000 from the event, which will fund Parks and Rec capital projects, programs, and scholarships.

To ensure safety at such a large public event, a dedicated team of 63 police officers and two communications operators, along with 26 fire/EMS staff, worked tirelessly to maintain a secure environment throughout the weekend.

To bolster their efforts, Ascension Seton Hospital provided additional support with dozens of EMTs and healthcare workers.

During the event, visitors enjoyed honky tonk tunes from headliners like Wynonna Judd, Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, Clay Walker, and Tanya Tucker. There were also several familiar faces among the many food and market vendors, including Golden Rule, Jimmy Vega’s Smokehouse, Scoops Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Southern Sweets Kettle Corn, Mesquite Creek Outfitters, Outlaws and Gypsies, and The Daytripper.
