Le Posate

Les petits chefs-d’oeuvre du design

The first Alessi Flatware model was “Dry”, designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1982. It won the XIVth Compasso d’Oro in 1983 and is present in the collections of many museums the world over. With its regular parallelepipedon shape, unprecedented but very practical, it was also, in my view, one of the five or six most innovative and remarkable flatware sets of the 20th century. With this project, Castiglioni was reacting to the functionalist and formalist approaches that had characterised flatware design between the 1950s and the 1970s, above all that of Scandinavian origin. To make clear what he saw as the exaggerations of this method, he would twist his hexagonal pencil through his fingers, explaining to us how, in his view, the hand, “designed” as it was to be extraordinarily prehensile and malleable, could, in many cases, adapt itself to objects rather than the other way around. Our second model was “Nuovo Milano” by Ettore Sottsass, which saw the light of day in 1987, after quite a few years of experiments, prototypes and research into differentiated thicknesses of the bodies of the Flatware pieces. “Nuovo Milano” won the XVth Compasso d’Oro in 1989. The Set is as soft and rounded as Castiglioni’s is angular and hard. I recall how much Ettore would insist that

he wanted his Flatware to be “as smooth and polished as a sea stone”. I remember also a sort of affectionate competition between the two maestros, and how every so often Achille would ask me for news about his Service, in particular if people still liked it. On receiving my reassurance that his and Ettore’s sets were the two favourites among the public, he would smile contentedly and light up his umpteenth cigarette. After Achille’s and Ettore’s Sets, which could not have been more unalike, but both of which were pioneering in the renewal of Italian Flatware design, I’ve arguably exhausted the subject. But perhaps not, because year after year the Alessi catalogue is inexorably enriched with new projects, no one like the other, each with its own raison d’être, its own meaning and its own formal approach, all of which we then offer to our customers, who know how to appreciate the subtle quality of beautiful tableware. Alberto Alessi

Boccioni, Cezanne, contexulising it with the “universe of the table” as we conceive it: convivial, quiet, hearty, basic, elegant, metaphysical, baroque, cubist, colourful, minimal,

“‘Alessi Le Posate’ (Alessi cutlery) is the third installment in a unfied communication campaign where the packaging tells the stories of products that tell stories about the company. It follows the two other recent packaging projects for ‘ObjetsBijoux’ and ‘Super and Popular’. In this way Alessi continues along its unique path made of specialized niches in which, regarding issues of design, functionality and domestic rituals, each object can express itslef with the virtuosity of a soloist while the collection as a whole has the generous impact of a complete orchestra. In our project for ‘Alessi Cutlery’, we aimed to bestow on this fine group of products all the iconographical strength it deserves. Each of the 24-piece sets of cutlery is associated with the painting depicting a dinner table, which is shown on the package. Thus the shops become small imaginary museums that tell the story of Alessi cutlery through the works of Gauguin, Juan Gris, Van Gogh, Paul Klee, Giulio Romano,

timeless. It almost makes you want to eat. As in our previous packaging projects, we have tried to exploit the package’s full potential to work in concert with shop displays: each set currently in production is presented in a compact-sized box, reducing its overall dimensions compared to past versions in order to facilitate displaying the complete range on the shelf. And in the event that dishes and glasses by the same designer are present in our catalogue, photographs of complete table settings show them together suggesting possible and auspicable coordinated universes. It almost makes you want to buy them.” Mario Trimarchi
