Fifty years after the momentous uprising following a police raid on Manhattan’s Stonewall Inn, the Pacific Pride Foundation and Fielding Graduate University join forces to reflect on how far LGBTQ+ rights have come – and how far they have yet to go. The event’s keynote speaker was Jim Obergefell, the plaintiff in the landmark 2015 Supreme Court case, Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage. After his talk, Jim was joined on stage by a multi-generational panel for an open discussion of issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. The panel included, “Accidental activist” Jim Obergefell; Ellen Broidy, PhD, cofounder of first Gay Pride March and member of Gay Liberation Front; Aiden Hirshfield, PhD, Fielding graduate and transgender scholar; and Anaiya Boutan, 2019 Pacific Pride Foundation Youth Advocate Leader. The panel discussion was moderated by Starshine Roshell; special thanks to Platinum Sponsors: the Santa Barbara Independent, Santa Barbara City College Foundation, and Montecito Bank & Trust.
