FOOTBALL INSIDER 2017 /// WEEK 11

WEEK 11 WHAT'S NEW

Team of the Week: Iowa The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated No. 6 Ohio State, 55-24, after scoring the most points ever by an Iowa offense against the Buckeyes. With the score tied at 17 in the second quarter, the Hawkeyes scored 14 points in the final 6:38 to take a 31-17 lead at halftime. After trading punts during the first four possessions of the second half, the Hawkeyes made it a three-possession game with a nine-play, 78-yard scoring drive. Iowa lined up to attempt a 37-yard field goal on fourth-and-3 from the OSU 20 and instead, rolled the dice with a fake field goal. After another third-quarter score, the Hawkeyes put the game away with a 17-point outburst in the fourth quarter.

Quote of the Week Michigan State upset No. 7 Penn State by a last-minute field goal, 27-24, a win that earned the No. 12 spot in this week’s CFP rankings. Head coach Mark Dantonio commented on his team’s confidence moving forward: “Sometimes I have to come across aggressive and intense and get our guys motivated, and there are other times where I need to use poise and let everybody know that everything will be okay. We have to stick together and it’s going to work out.”

This Week in College Football History November 3, 1962

Rutgers University and its neighbor, Princeton University, played the first game of intercollegiate football on this date, on a plot of ground where the present-day Rutgers gymnasium now stands in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers won that first game, 6-4. The contest was played with two teams of 25 men each under rugby-like rules, but like modern football, it was “replete with surprise, strategy, prodigies of determination, and physical prowess,” to use the words of one of the Rutgers players. Rutgers got Columbia University started in the grid sport the following season and in a few years most of the colleges and universities in the East were represented on the gridiron.
