Fiesta Bowl Charities is donating $2.5 million in charitable giving during the 2017-18 Fiesta Bowl season to nonprofit organizations in Arizona – the largest amount in Fiesta Bowl history and more than any college bowl organization. $500,000 will be dedicated to Arizona educators. Fiesta Bowl Charities, our Board of Directors and entire organization are honored that we can enhance the lives of Arizonans through this increased level of funding that sets a new standard. Our three pillars of youth, sports and education drive everything we do, including determining where this money was distributed. We’ve seen how our state’s nonprofits maximize the funds they receive and we look forward to hearing the stories of how these charities implemented the grants in the year to come. WISHES FOR TEACHERS
Fiesta Bowl Charities is thrilled to announce that the Wishes for Teachers program will continue and impact even more classrooms during the 2017-18 season. This year, $500,000 has been pledged to grant 100 wishes for classrooms across the state each worth $5,000. Do you know a teacher that could use a classroom makeover, new technology for students, a school garden, new sports equipment or new programs? All teachers are encouraged to submit their wish on the Fiesta Bowl website from October 6 through November 3 for a chance to be randomly selected to receive funding from Fiesta Bowl Charities! A LO O K IN S ID E T HE F IES TA B O W L C H AR I TAB L E G I V I N G C O M MIT TE E Four years ago, Gary Hanson got a call on his way home from work and the speaker on the other line had one simple question. “How do you look in yellow?” asked Patrick Barkley, a member of the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors. From that point on, Hanson immersed himself in the Fiesta Bowl, volunteering for every event, joining various committees and committing himself to learning everything about the organization. These efforts led to his current role as chair of Fiesta Bowl Charities Charitable Giving Committee. As chair, Hanson leads the 20-person committee of volunteers and three staff members in evaluating every application that is submitted to Fiesta Bowl Charities during the annual grant cycle. The committee individually reviews each application and ensures that the three pillars of the Fiesta Bowl – youth, sports and education – are at the core of every decision. This past year, nearly 400 applications were received, resulting in $2.5 million distributed to 67 Arizona nonprofits during the 2017-18 season. “Every single application touches your heart when you think about all the people you may impact,” Hanson explained. “We go through and make tough decisions based off who we are and what we stand for as an organization. It is a huge responsibility and a very humbling experience.” In addition to the charitable organizations who receive funding, for the second year, up to $500,000 of the total grant money will be donated through the Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers program. Hanson was vice chair of the committee during the 2016-17 season and remembers directly feeling the impact of the 100 teachers state-wide who earned a $5,000 grant to benefit their students. “The teachers were so excited but not for their own sake, what they felt was knowing the impact the grant would have on their students,” Hanson reflected. “That was extremely rewarding to see.” CO N TI N UE R EAD I N G

Help us build a playground in one day! In partnership with KaBOOM!, Fiesta Bowl Charities has built three playgrounds in the Arizona community so far. KaBOOM! is a nonprofit organization that focuses their efforts on providing safe and fun places for children to play, specifically in low income areas. With the help of approximately 200 volunteers per build, a playground goes up in a matter of six hours. Volunteers move mulch to the site, assemble playground equipment, mix and move cement, paint existing structures, plant trees and so much more to create a playground each neighborhood will cherish for years to come.
