U NI V E R S I T Y O F P H OENI X STAD I UM With its retractable field and roof, Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium is unlike any other venue in North America. The exterior design was the vision of renowned architect Peter Eisenman along with HOK Sport. The basic form of the design takes its cue from a barrel cactus and offers alternating vertical slots with smooth panels. The stadium was constructed with a roof containing two large panels that retract to uncover the entire playing field. The stadium’s most unique feature is a rollout field consisting of a 152,000 square-foot concrete stadium floor with an embedded utility grid. The natural grass field rests in a retractable, 12-million pound tray outside the stadium until game day for maximum sun exposure and nourishment. The tray takes approximately 45 minutes to move inside the stadium and rests atop tracks as it rolls in and out on a steel wheel set powered by small electric motors. The stadium has permanent seating for 63,000 but expands to hold approximately 73,000 for mega-events like the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, College Football National Championship game and the Super Bowl. The stadium has a total of 88 luxury suites on two levels, club seating for 7,000 with access to private club lounge areas, lower bowl seating for 29,000 and upper deck seating for approximately 26,000 accommodate patrons. All seats are individual chairs with armrests and cup holders.

The press box, located in the southwest corner, accommodates approximately 154 working media members. There is also a national television broadcast booth, a home coaches booth, a visiting coaches booth, an instant replay booth, an officials booth, a scoreboard and public address control booth, a stats booth and four radio booths. The 2011 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship Game pitting Auburn and Oregon drew 78,603 fans, the largest crowd in the history of University of Phoenix Stadium.

M OLI NA FIESTA BO W L T RO P H Y THE PLAN In 2002 the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors decided it needed a more unique trophy to compete with the trophies of the other national bowls – something that would make a statement. The original Fiesta Bowl Trophy was small, made of wood and slightly resembled the Heisman Trophy. Recognizing the need for something slightly more impressive, the board had in mind the perfect man for the job. Al Molina, a Fiesta Bowl Yellow Jacket Committee member, happened to be an internationally-recognized jeweler. They tasked Molina with, what would become, a masterpiece of a trophy. With no budget, no guidelines and free rein over the design, Molina and members of the executive committee set out to create a truly historical work of art. Molina, refusing to create anything short of a masterpiece, told the board he would make the trophy on his own “nickel.”

04

T H E PL AYS TAT I O N ® F I E S TA B OW L

THE CREATION With just a little more than three months to bring the idea life, a team of experts set to work under the leadership of Al Molina and head designer Christopher Olson, who is considered the “champion of the trophy.” The trophy’s foundation entailed an intricate fabrication of five different shades of marble and granite, upholding the stunning complexities of the trophy. The center column was created using lapis lazuli, one of the most sought after stones in the world. Created to simulate the Arizona sunset, it was hand-carved in 18-karat yellow, green, red, peach and white gold. The sterling silver dome alone, enhanced with multi-colored windows created in jeweler’s enamel, took more than 96 hours to complete.

cast the eight perfectly-designed players in sterling silver to live on each side and corner of the structure. Ken Wilson, a former Disney “Imagineer” and inventor of the infamous lightsabers used in Star Wars, created the one-of-a-kind LED lighting display within the trophy.

After more than 3,000 hours of work, along with a frantic two a.m. call to fix a crack in the dome the night before the big reveal, the Molina Design Team was ready to unveil the masterpiece – a trophy like none other in collegiate athletics.

Weighing more than 200 pounds, the trophy design team knew even the strongest football team wouldn’t be able to hold it up in celebration after their Fiesta Bowl victory. This realization sparked the idea of the removable football, but not just any ole’ football. Made of 18-karat gold with jeweler’s enameled Fiesta Bowl sunburst marks, this football flaunts 2,187 pavé-set diamonds. The stones weigh a total of 50 carats, making up the stripes on the extravagant football, which is two-thirds regulation size.

THE SIGNIFICANCE The Molina Fiesta Bowl Trophy, now a recognized staple of the Bowl, was certainly a labor of love. The one-of-a-kind trophy signifies the values, vision and pride of the game and of the Fiesta Bowl Organization. Al Molina has been asked numerous times to make other trophies but the answer is always the same:

Not one element of the design was created at random. The compass on the base of the trophy signifies the path of life. The players at the base depict those who support and uphold the team while the players above represent those who guard and protect the ball. The Greek word Nyvk, meaning “the goddess of victory,” is engraved on the curtain above the players. Designed in lotus flowers, the dome signifies purity of strength, power and heart of the victors. Finally, the perfection of the diamonds on the football represents the dedication of the winning team to their sport.

“That is the only trophy Molina has ever made. That is the only trophy we will ever make.” Below photos of the Molina Fiesta Bowl Trophy were taken at the Desert Botanical Garden.

Todd McFarlane, Grammy- and Emmy-winning producer/director and founder of one of America’s top action figure manufactures, McFarlane Toys, used his rare talent for detail and accuracy to create the football players. He

WASHINGTON THIS SEASON

PENN STATE SEASON Penn State (10-2, 7-2) closed out a great season on a four-game win streak behind the dynamic offensive duo of quarterback Trace McSorley and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year running back Saquon Barkley to place second in the Big Ten East. After going 7-0 to start the season, the Nittany Lions fell to both Ohio State and Michigan State by a combined four points.

After finishing the season with a 41-14 win over rival No. 18 Washington State, Washington (10-2, 7-2) enters the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl for the first time in program history. Washington is in the New Year’s Six for the second straight year and is the first Pac-12 team to play in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl since Arizona in 2014. The Huskies earned a bowl berth for the eight consecutive season, the second longest streak among Pac-12 programs. MATCHUP HISTORY This will be only the third time Washington has faced Penn State and the first since 1983. The Huskies lost both meetings, including a 13-10 loss in the Aloha Bowl and a 21-7 loss to the Nittany Lions in 1921. PLAYSTATION® FIESTA BOWL HISTORY This will be the first time Washington has appeared in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. WASHINGTON HEAD COACH CHRIS PETERSEN Since taking over the Huskies football program following the 2013 season, Chris Petersen has turned Washington into a national contender. record includes a 12-1 regular season in 2016, a Pac-12 title and a berth in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. Petersen has coached in one of the Fiesta Bowl’s greatest games, guiding Boise State to a 43-42 overtime win in 2007 over Oklahoma. KEY PLAYERS Myles Gaskin The junior running back has played in 12 games, rushed for 1,322 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and 106.8 yards per game. He has rushed for 19 touchdowns. Jake Browning The junior quarterback has played in 12 games, completing 212 passes on 308 attempts with five interceptions. Browning has thrown for 2,544 yards and 18 touchdowns. MATCHUP HISTORY This will only be the third time the teams have played and the first since 1983. The Nittany Lions won both meetings, including a 13-10 Penn State win in the Aloha Bowl. The first meeting was in 1921 with a 21-7 Nittany Lion victory. PLAYSTATION® FIESTA BOWL HISTORY The Nittany Lions are a perfect 6-0 in Fiesta Bowl games, a record that includes a fiveyear stretch from 1977-82. The program’s most recent visit was in 1997, beating Texas, 38-15. Penn State defeated Miami 14-10 for the 1987 national championship at the Fiesta Bowl in one of college football’s greatest games ever.

Penn State football history. Franklin has brought the Nittany Lions back into national contention, winning the Big Ten Conference in 2016 and going 21-5 over the last two seasons. After being named the Sporting News National Coach of the Year in 2016, Franklin has led the Nittany Lions to their fourth straight bowl game. KEY PLAYERS Saquon Barkley The junior running back has played in 12 games, rushed for 1,248 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry and 94.5 yards per game. Barkley had a school-record 348 all-purpose yards and career-high 211 yards rushing in a1917 victory at Iowa, a game McSorley won on a 7-yard touchdown pass as time expired to cap an 80-yard drive. “I cannot imagine that there’s a better player in all of college football,” Franklin said of Barkley. Washington has similar numbers and personnel. Quarterback Jake Browning, running back Myles Gaskin and receiver/kick returner Dante Pettis have provided the impetus for a team that is averaging 44.3 points and 411.7 yards per game.

WA S H I NGT ON VS . PENN STATE GAME PR EVI EW BY JACK MCGRUDER The PlayStation Fiesta Bowl has found another way to make history. The match of national powers Penn State and Washington has seen to that. The storied programs will meet for the first time in a major bowl game in the 47th edition of the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, and both arrive with full resumes. No. 9 Penn State was a defensive stop here and a scoring drive there from a possible berth in the College Football Playoff, a season in which it was this close to a fifth undefeated season in the last 50 years.

good team and a very good program. That’s what happens. You play in a New Year’s Six bowl game, you’re going to be playing a great opponent. We’re excited about playing Washington. We’re excited about playing the Pac-12. It should be a tremendous challenge.” Penn State should have great memories of its previous holiday time in Arizona. The Nittany Lions have won all six of their Fiesta Bowl appearances, including one of the most memorable bowl games in the history of college football, a 14-10 victory over Miami to conclude an undefeated 1986 season. That game not only pushed the Fiesta Bowl into national prominence but also delivered the Nittany Lions the most recent of their two consensus national championships.

No. 11 Washington played a perfect home season, but an upset loss at Arizona State played a big part in keeping the Huskies from a spot in the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season.

Washington will look to add to its voluminous record of bowl success in its first Fiesta Bowl, although it is hardly a stranger to major bowls. The Huskies have won seven Rose Bowls and one Orange Bowl. They made the FBS Final Four last season, playing Alabama in one semifinal game in the third year of the latest College Football Playoff format.

Neither is a stranger to the national stage, and both are glad to be here.

Strong programs beget strong players, and these teams are no exception.

“There is no better bowl,” Washington coach Chris Petersen said. “When we heard we were coming back there was a lot of jumping around and smiling faces … until we found out it was Penn State. The we said, ‘Oh-oh, be careful what you wish for.’ This is what college football is all about. This is what you play so hard for during the season, to go to a big-time bowl game like this and play against another really, really storied program. Great program.”

Quarterback Trace McSorley, halfback Saquon Barkley and a quartet of 40-catch receivers have led Penn State to an average of 41.6 points and 453.3 yards per game. The Nittany Lions entered the bowl season seventh in the FBS in scoring. McSorley provides a double threat, having passed for 26 touchdowns and rushed for 11 more.

Washington and Penn State have met twice, the most recent in the Nittany Lions’ 13-10 victory in the 1983 Aloha Bowl. Penn State also won the regular-season meeting in 1921. “It’s going to be a great experience,” Penn State coach James Franklin said. “They are a very

Browning has thrown for 2,544 yards and 18 touchdowns, and he holds the career touchdown record with 77. He ranks third in the FBS with a 68.8 completion percentage. Gaskin has rushed for 1,282 yards and 19 touchdowns. He had nine rushing touchdowns in the final three games of the season and has a school-record 43 rushing touchdowns and 47 total touchdowns. Pettis has 62 receptions for 721 yards and seven touchdowns, and he is at his most explosive when fielding punts. He had four punt returns for touchdown this season and set the NCAA Division I career record with nine, breaking the mark held by Texas Tech’s Wes Welker and Oklahoma’s Antonio Perkins. Pettis had a touchdown return in the first three games of the season. “He’s an exciting guy to watch,” Petersen said. Each team has scored at least 30 points 10 times this season by doing what they do best. “Our offense, we’re kind of multiple,” Petersen said. “We do different things depending on the team we are seeing to try to put ourselves in a position to be very successful. We don’t pigeon hole ourselves into one thing, but we’ll figure it out. I think that is one of the reasons we kind of like what we do. We don’t just lock in and say this is what we do. We do what we

need to do to win the game or give our kids the best chance to win the game.” In Washington, Penn State will meet a team ranked No. 1 in the NCAA FBS in rushing defense for the third time this season. Washington has allowed an average of 93.2 yards per game 2.6 yards per rush, both tops in the rankings enter fowl season. With Barkley and McSorley leading the way, the Nittany Lions rushed for 224 against a Michigan team that was ranked No. 1 on Oct. 7. They had 65 yards rushing while passing for 401 yards against new top-rated Michigan State on Nov. 4. “It’s going to be a challenge,” Franklin said. “They are big. They are strong. They are physical. They are fast. And they take a lot of pride in how they play defense there (in Seattle), them and the Seattle Seahawks. They’ve got it rolling on the defensive side of the ball and are obviously doing a great job on offense as well. I know our guys will be excited about it.” History suggest this will be another memorable edition. Penn State played one of the most remarkable Fiesta Bowls in history in its 14-10 victory over Miami, Fla. on the second day of 1987. Petersen showed off perhaps the most innovative playbook in Fiesta history when his previous team, Boise State, beat Oklahoma 43-42 in overtime on the second day of 2006 in the first college football game played at University of Phoenix Stadium. Each game brought with it the kind of special that makes college football what it is. The Nittany Lions’ victory over Miami, the fourth of their six successful Fiesta matchups, brought coach Joe Paterno his second national championship. The other was in 1982. By locking up the two independents and convincing the NBC network to televise the game on a Monday night, the Fiesta had the national audience (and the national advertising dollars) to itself, and an estimated 70 million viewers made it the most-watched bowl game in history.

Barkley, whose resume includes a dynamic Rose Bowl performance a year ago, has shown the ability to beat a defense in all sorts of ways. He has 1,134 yards and 16 touchdowns rushing and 47 passes receptions for 594 yards. He also has two touchdowns among his 15

G A ME P R EVIEW The run-up was as eventful as the game. Miami moved to No. 1 in the AP poll after beating defending national champion Oklahoma in the fourth week, and they were not afraid to show it. Upon arrival in Phoenix, the Hurricanes deplaned wearing militarystyle fatigues. For its part, more buttoned-down Penn State — No. 2 ranked and also undefeated — took a shot at Miami coach Jimmy Johnson’s a-place-for-every-hair-andevery-hair-in-its-place coif in a skit at the midweek steak fry for both teams, causing Miami players to walk out. The Lions forced seven turnovers, including five interceptions by Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, and All-American linebacker Shane Conlan’s pick in the fourth quarter set up halfback D.J. Dozier’s 6-yard touchdown run with just more than eight minutes remaining for a 14-10 lead, the Lions’ first lead of the game. Testaverde moved the Hurricanes to the Penn State 5-yard line in the final minute, but linebacker Pete Giftopolous dropped into coverage and intercepted a pass in the end zone to seal the victory. Penn State’s other victories here have come against Arizona State (1977 season), Ohio State (1980), Southern California (1981), Tennessee (1991) and Texas (1996). Average game score: 32-17. Average margin of victory: 15. The Nittany Lions’ defense, always well-prepared in bowl season, have given up five touchdowns in their last four appearances here.

notion that the Huskies will not be ready, willing and able. Peterson pulled so many rabbits out of his hat late in the victory over Oklahoma that he needed another hat. Down by seven points with 18 seconds remaining and facing a fourth-and-18 at midfield, the Broncos executed a hook-and-ladder play perfectly for the tying touchdown. The play was known as “circus” in the Boise State vernacular. After Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson ran for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime, the Broncos faced another fourth down, this time fourth-and-two at the Oklahoma five. Not to worry. A wide receiver who lined up in the shotgun formation threw a touchdown to a tight end who had lined up as a wide receiver to make it 42-41. Instead of going for a tie, Petersen went for two with a “statue of liberty” play, in which halfback Ian Johnson took a surreptitious handoff from the quarterback and scored untouched for the win. Moiments later, Johnson got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Boise State head cheerleader Chrissy Popadics, during a live postgame interview. So be prepared.

Rightly, Franklin did not want to get caught up in what came before. “This game is about execution,” Franklin said. “The history is great, and we are excited to be back there. But at the end of the day, it is going to come down to the University of Washington’s 2017 football team and Penn State University’s 2017 football team and all the great coaches and players that we have in our programs, going out and playing well.” Washington may have no Fiesta Bowl experience, but Petersen’s resume dispels any
