CHARIT IES S PO T LIGHT
Join us at the Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped and help build a playground in just six hours! On December 1st, we’ll build a custom playground for hundreds of Arizona youth as the original playground was burned in a fire. Volunteers will construct, paint, build, and once we’re done, celebrate the new playground.
For nearly 70 years, the Franciscan Renewal Center has been renewing lives to those who need it, regardless of race, religion or wealth. They do this through the many programs they offer like legal or spiritual counseling, support groups, and their retreats that help people deal with grief, whether it be the loss of a child or a veteran returning from war dealing with the mental and moral scars from it. The Franciscan Renewal Center doesn’t reject anyone due to a lack of funds or if they aren’t of the same religion, the sign in the front of their building speaks for them: “All are Welcome.” To help fund their programs and their facilities, Fiesta Bowl Charities gave Franciscan Renewal Center a grant during the 2018-19 grant cycle.

B O A R D S P O T L I G H T: M A R C H E L L E F R A N K L I N First Year on Board: 2018 Favorite Fiesta Bowl Game: December 25, 1976 for two reasons: it was my first Fiesta Bowl game and my uncle (Lucious Selmon) was the defensive coach for Oklahoma who played in the game that year. Most Memorable Moment: Related to the Fiesta Bowl, it had to be when I got the call from my dear friend and board member that she had nominated me for the board. I was very shocked to be considered for board membership to such a prestigious organization. Favorite Job: Chief of Staff for a former City of Phoenix Mayor; blessed to work with this great leader for 8 years who brought significant change to the city, especially downtown. Favorite Event: I’m a newbie to the board so I’m just experiencing all the various events associated with the organization...ask me next year! Interesting Fact: Well I’m a NASCAR junkie! Phoenix International Raceway twice a year; something about the roar from the engines when the cars throttle up and down the straightaway and the smell of tires gripping the asphalt in the turns.
Y E L L O W J A C K E T S P O T L I G H T: K I R K M c C L U R E Number of Years with the Bowl: Four Positions Held at the Fiesta Bowl: VIP Hospitality, VIP Check-in, Team Hospitality Chair, Duck Race committee, HIO committee, Par 3 Challenge Chair, Sales coach, this year VIP Hospitality Asst. Chair, and Game Officials. Favorite Game: 2016 Clemson v Ohio State. Spent a lot of time with Clemson in VIP Suite that week and was so impressed by their professionalism, character, and respect. Followed by them handing Ohio State a goose egg capped it off, being a Michigan fan, it made my day! Memorable Moment: Most memorable moment had to be my first shift on VIP check-in at the game. Thinking there was no way I am not going to get lost in the stadium while hearing horror stories of past guys not getting their guest down to the field in time. It was overwhelming but so thrilling to be there on the field and see the game that close. Favorite Job: Chair for this year’s Par 3 Challenge. It was cool to assist the Bowl with organizing a new concept event after HIO and then watching it develop over the past 2 years. I believe we have set the stage for the event to be a staple in the Bowl’s strong fundraising efforts for years to come. Fun Fact: For a kid growing up in Michigan, I actually came Arizona to play hockey at ASU. Why do you volunteer for the Fiesta Bowl: I volunteer at the Fiesta Bowl because I love to find things to give back to. It’s so cool to see kids at Aerospace Challenge or Teachers getting grants for their classroom or Vets at the game. I also enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow Yellow Jackets, and bowl staff.
