30TH ANNUAL CHEEZ-IT® BOWL

CHASE FIELD The sidelines aren’t what football fans are accustomed to seeing. After all, there is a dugout behind the visitor’s bench, a bullpen behind the northern endzone, no nets behind the goal posts, and the scoreboard provides a section dedicated to runs, hits and errors. Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is one of only a handful of Major League Baseball stadiums that has been configured to accommodate a football game. It’s one of the most innovative and fan-friendly Major League Baseball stadiums, Chase Field has served as the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks since the spring of 1998. Designed by renowned architect Ellerbe Becket, Chase Field is located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, only 4.3 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, with Light Rail access on-site. During that time, it has hosted seven Cheez-It Bowls (formerly Cactus Bowl) as well as various other sporting and live musical events, in addition to its baseball activities. Chase, formerly Bank One Ballpark, has played host to the 2001 World Series Champions and 2011 MLB All-Star Game. From its retractable roof – that is operated by a pair of 200-horsepower motors – to its signature

swimming pool, Chase Field is one of the Valley of the Sun’s most recognizable landmarks. The ballpark covers approximately 1,300,000 square feet, including the playing surface, and is divided into six levels: the field, main concourse, press level, suite club level, upper concourse and mechanical level.

CAL GOLDEN BEARS CAL THIS SEASON

After completing its first winning season since 2015, Cal enters the Cheez-It® Bowl for the third time in school history. Ranked third in the Pac-12 in points allowed (255), 11th in the nation in total yards allowed (3,833), 16th in the nation in yards allowed per game (319) and 19th in the nation in passing yards allowed this season (2,245), Cal has one of the best defenses in the nation. The Golden Bears’ signature win came against No. 9 Washington, upsetting the Huskies 12-10.

30TH ANNUAL CHEEZ-IT® BOWL

CAL HEAD COACH JUSTIN WILCOX

In 2017, Justin Wilcox was named the 34th head coach of the Golden Bears, going 12-12 in his first two seasons. Wilcox has been coaching since 2001, spending time at Boise State, Tennessee, Washington, USC and was on the coaching staff at Cal during the Golden Bears last appearance in the Cheez-It Bowl.

MATCHUP HISTORY

TCU PRIMARY MEDIA CONTACT

The Horned Frogs (6-6, 4-5) enter the Cheez-It® Bowl after strong defensive efforts helped TCU win three of its last four games. With one of the stingiest defenses in the nation, giving up the fewest yards in the Big 12 Conference, the Horned Frogs held Baylor to nine points and Oklahoma State to 24 to close out the season and earn bowl eligibility for the fifth straight year. This will be TCU’s 19th bowl appearance since 1998 and 13th in the last 15 seasons. The 2018 Cheez-It® Bowl will mark the first meeting between TCU and Cal.

In 2000, Gary Patterson became the 30th head coach in TCU history and has led the program to great success, going 166-63 in Fort Worth, the most wins for a head coach in program history. In 2011, the Horned Frogs beat Wisconsin, 21-19, in the Rose Bowl, completing their first undefeated season since 1938. Patterson has led the Horned Frogs to the Valley on two previous occasions, appearing in the Fiesta Bowl in 2009 and the Cheez-It® Bowl in 2012. Mark Cohen m.cohen@tcu.edu 817-343-2017

CHEEZ-IT BOWL GAME PREVIEW (CONT.)

30th ANNUAL CHEEZ-IT® BOWL GAME PREVIEW By Jack Magruder The Cheez-It® Bowl will provide a nice blend of the new and the always has been. The meeting of TCU and California presents not only a matchup of schools with long-established traditions, it also serves as a testament to the preeminent power of stick-to-it-iveness. You cannot spell “tenacious” without TCU. You cannot spell “dogged” without Golden Bears. Those traits — and there are many more adjectives that are just as applicable — have defined the California and TCU programs as they prepare to face each other for the first time in the 30th edition of the Cheez-It® Bowl at reconfigured Chase Field, the summer home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 2018 season just seemed to reinforce them. TCU overcame the loss of its two top quarterbacks, not to mention another two dozen or so contributors, and were victorious in win-or-gohome games in the final two weeks of the Big 12 season to qualify for

8

30TH ANNUAL CHEEZ-IT® BOWL

its 12th bowl game appearance in the last 13 seasons under coach Gary Patterson. Knuckle up? Indeed. Cal returned to the bowl scene in coach Justin Wilcox’s second season, and the Bears did it with an exclamation point — they were one of three teams to hold Pac-12 champion and Rose Bowl representative Washington to a lone touchdown, and they were the only team to beat the Huskies in regulation play in the regular season. Earn it? Certainly. “I think we both went through some struggles in the middle of the season, for different reasons, and both teams have fought back,” Patterson said. “And so you get ready to go. That’s why you play a bowl game, because it is a positive for your players. It’s a reward. I probably would be able to speak for both teams — both teams want to be able to end the season

playing their best football and put on a great ball game.” Both played their best when it was most needed in 2018. Cal won four of five games to open the second half of the season to break a three-game losing streak, with a signature 12-10 victory over Washington providing a springboard to wins over USC and Colorado and bowl eligibility. The Golden Bears beat Washington their way — leading with an aggressive defense and an error-free offense. Evan Weaver scored on a 37-yard interception return on the final play of the third quarter and the Bears made it stand up. The pick-six proved contagious. Elijah Hicks and Ashtyn Davis scored on interception returns within a minute of each other in the first quarter of a 33-21 victory over Colorado three weeks later, giving the Bears their seventh victory. Davis had another interception as the Bears had a seasonhigh five takeaways. “We’ve had some ups and downs this season,” Wilcox said, “and I thought our guys really battled through it, to be honest. The character of the team really showed. Our kids just kept fighting and believing in each other. “I know it (Washington victory) generated some confidence amongst them. I thought we got better as the season wore on. We didn’t always play as well as we would have liked, but really proud of how hard the guys play and how hard they compete. We won some games with the intangibles, I think.” The tangibles factored in, of course. Halfback Patrick Laird has 1,223 yards in total offense and nine touchdowns as a run/pass catch threat out of the backfield, and is 68 yards short of his second straight 1,000-yard rushing season. Chase Garbers emerged as the No. 1 quarterback and has passed for 1,413 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for another 396 yards. No. 2 quarterback Brandon McIlwain has 1,165 passing/rushing yards. Through it all the defense was a constant. The Golden Bears entered the

bowl season ranked No. 16 in the FBS total defense, giving up just 319 yards a game, and were 24th in points allowed at 21.3. They have five defensive touchdowns, tied with Alabama for fourth in the nation, and their 17 interceptions are one short of the national leaders. Maybe the defensive bent is to be expected. Wilcox’s father, Dave, was a rangy outside linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “Since we’ve been here, I think we’ve definitely made some strides in that area,” Wilcox said. “We have some players on that side of the ball that are really, really coachable. The guys are really learning how to play the game. Most importantly, they play extremely hard and play together, and that always gives you a chance.” TCU knows a thing or two about that side of the ball, also. The Horned Frogs have given up an average of only 344 yards a game, and they held three opponents to one touchdown and three others to two. They held 11 opponents under their season total offense average and nine under their scoring average despite losing five defensive starters to season-ending injuries. The defense was at its best was in regular season-ending victories over Baylor and Oklahoma State. TCU had a season-high five sacks and limited Baylor to 59 yards in the fourth quarter of 16-9 victory in the first of its two must-win games. The Horned Frogs pressure Oklahoma State into four straight incompletions on the final meaningful possession of a 31-24 victory the following week. Defensive end Ben Banogu has 7 1/2 sacks and has had a hand in two of the three Horned Frogs’ defensive touchdowns this season, scoring on a 47-yard fumble recovery and causing a fumble that Alex Dunham returned 25 yards for a score. Again, perhaps its runs in the genes. Certainly in the schemes. Patterson’s CHEEZITBOWL.COM

team has led the Big 12 in total defense four times (including this season) since it joined the league in 2012. The unit has recorded at least 25 sacks a year for the last 23. While the defense has remained solid as ever, the Horned Frogs have persevered through injuries to quarterbacks Mike Collins and Shawn Robinson and were down to one scholarship running back against Baylor. Not to worry. Fifth-year senior Grayson Muehlstein, who remained in school to begin work on his master’s degree, completed 27-of-40 passes for three touchdowns and no interceptions and rushed for 57 yards while starting the last two games. He had one career completion entering the Baylor game. “We’d be in a lot of trouble if he hadn’t stayed,” Patterson said. “He’s done what he’s needed to do to win the last two ball games. We’re fighting through it and glad to be in this position.” The national stage is a position in which both have found themselves through the years. The schools have produced some of the most revered players in the college game, starting at quarterback. Slingin’ Sammy Baugh finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1936, the second year the trophy was presented, and Davey O’Brien won it two years later. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was ninth in 2010, and Trevor Boykin finished fourth and ninth in 2014-15. Running back Jim Swink was a two-time All-America selection in the mid1950s and LaDanian Tomlinson continued the running back tradition as a consensus All-America in 2000. Baugh, O’Brien and Tomlinson have had their numbers retired. Horned Frogs defensive tackle Bob Lilly was a unanimous All-America choice in 1960 before becoming a member of the Dallas Cowboys’ “Doomsday Defense.” He earned seven first-team All-Pro selections, played in 11 Pro Bowls, and is enshrined in both the College Football Hall

of the Football and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Cal’s tradition began a century ago, soon after the school turned from rugby to football. The Bears were the consensus national champion in 1920 and shared the title the next two seasons while going 27-0-1. Lynn “Pappy” Waldorf ranks among the legends of the coaching ranks after guiding the Bears to a school-record 33 consecutive regular-season victories in 1947-50. Running backs Jackie Jensen, Hugh McElhenny and Johnny Olszewski begat Chuck Muncie, Russell White and Marshawn Lynch in the long line of dominant ball carriers, and the quarterback depth is just as rich. Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff, who left school 10 years apart, have made their mark on the NFL. Rodgers is not stranger to Chase Field. He passed for 394 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more touchdowns as the MVP of the 2003 Insight Bowl, a 52-49 victory over Virginia Tech. With these defenses, that kind of game may not break out tonight. Expect grind. “Any time you get into a ball game where it’s going to be hard-hitting and it’s going to be a close game, everybody gets excited about it,” Patterson said. “Whether it is high-scoring or low-scoring, it makes no difference. What both sides are trying to do is win by one point.”

BIG 12 CONFERENCE

30TH ANNUAL CHEEZ-IT® BOWL

The Pac-12 Conference is headquartered in San Francisco, California in the SOMA district. Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men’s sports and 13 women’s sports, with women’s lacrosse a new addition for the 2017-18 academic year and beach volleyball having been added in 2015-16. Additionally, the Conference is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men’s sports and two women’s sports. Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Pac-12 Conference renewed its undisputed claim as the Conference of Champions® in 2016-17, becoming the first conference to win 500 NCAA Championships. The Pac-12 led the nation in 2016-17 with 13 NCAA crowns. The Pac-12 has led or tied the nation in NCAA Championships in 51 of the last 57 years, the only exceptions being in 1980-81, 1988-89, 1990-91 and 1995-96 when the Conference finished second, and only twice finished third in 1998-99 and 2004-05. The Big 12 Conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas. Since 1996, the league has won 60 NCAA team titles and 654 individual national championships. The Big 12 has had six players win the Heisman Trophy with Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) winning the latest one in 2017. Overall, more than 4,800 student-athletes have earned AllAmerica recognition. Big 12 has over 650 Academic All-America recipients, averaging about 30 each season. Big 12 has sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, football, golf, outdoor track & field, tennis, wrestling and more. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, gymnastics, outdoor track & field, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and more. Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. Nearly 5,000 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference. The Big 12 remains as the only autonomy conference to

For the 12th-consecutive year, the Pac-12 had the most or tied for the most NCAA titles of any conference in the country, winning at least six every year since 2000-01. No other conference has won double-digit NCAA crowns in a single year, the Pac-12 doing so nine times, including a record 14 in 1996-97. Spanning over a century of outstanding athletics achievements, The Pac-12 has claimed 513 NCAA Championships (297 men’s, 174 women’s, 30 combined), nearly 200 more than the next league. It was also the first to win 400 championships then surpassed 450 when Colorado and Utah joined the league in 2010-11. On the women’s side, the story is much the same. Since the NCAA began conducting women’s championships 36 years ago, Pac-12 members have claimed at least four national titles in a single season on 26 occasions, including a current streak of 17-consecutive years, dating back to 2000.

determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule The Big 12 led the nation in the fall of 2017 with 80% of its teams selected to bowl games highlighted by No. 2 Oklahoma competing in the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl. The Big 12 had at least 80% of teams bowl eligible for the third time in Conference history (90% in 2010 and 80% in 2011). The Big 12 has made six appearances in a CFP News Year’s Bowl in the four years of the structure. The Big 12 was the only conference in 2017-18 that placed a team in the College Football Playoff (Oklahoma), Men’s Final Four (Kansas), Men’s College World Series (Texas and Texas Tech) and Women’s College World Series (Oklahoma). A total of 421 scholars have received over $3.1 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 22 years of the program. The Conference currently conducts postseason championships for 21 of its 23 sports with the Football Championship Game returning in 2017 after a six-year absence. CHEEZITBOWL.COM
