Since 1971, Fiesta Bowl Charities has had the fortunate opportunity to serve thousands of nonprofits across the state, giving back to organizations that contribute to the success of their communities through our three pillars of youth, sports and education.

This past season was record-breaking for our organization. Fiesta Bowl Charities distributed $2.5 million to 67 Arizona nonprofits, a Fiesta Bowl record and more than any other college football bowl organization. Through our two annual bowl games in the Valley, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl and Cactus Bowl, as well as community events throughout the year, Fiesta Bowl Charities has given more than $10 million to the Arizona community in the last seven years. In addition to the charitable organizations who received funding, more than $700,000 was donated through the Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers program. Through random selection, 140 Arizona teachers received a $5,000 grant to support their students and classroom. We are excited to see where the continued growth will take us in future seasons. None of this would be possible without the support of our amazing fans, partners, volunteers, board, committee, ambassadors and staff. Thank you to all.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Resource Room 10
Fiesta Bowl Charities teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona to create a vibrant space for mentorship groups to collaborate. This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona received a $50,000 grant to renovate a space in its downtown office, creating the firstever Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room. This new room was entirely funded and designed by Fiesta Bowl Charities includes playbook covered tables, new laptops and a gaming system. This space is now the perfect place for 1,000+ mentors to have meaningful time and conversations with at-risk youth.
Now we have this amazing space where the kids can play games and be on the computer and play video games. Our program is 100 percent run by donations, and if we didn’t have generous organizations like the Fiesta Bowl, we wouldn’t exist.

Fiesta Bowl Charities partnered with KaBOOM! to build two new playgrounds in the state of Arizona during the 2017-18 grant cycle, providing more than 4,000 children with beautiful playgrounds in their communities.

This playground really completes the Kroc Center! Our community, parents, and children now have a go-to area to gather, play, and make new friends. Whether for a bit of fun or while waiting for a family member participating in one the Center’s many programs, the new playground provides a great setting for everyone to enjoy.

Fiesta Bowl Charities donated the game field from the 29th Annual Cactus Bowl to the Laveen Elementary School District as the newest addition to the new David Glasser Athletic Complex. On March 8, the inaugural Day of Play hosted children from Laveen Elementary to officially break in the field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and flag football game. Over 1,000 children and families are expected to utilize and benefit from the new field every year.

As part of a $200,000 Fiesta Bowl Charities Legacy Project, the donation includes 70,000 square feet of grass field plus a custom Fiesta Bowl Charities electronic scoreboard. The new space is expected to play home to at least four community football and soccer leagues.

Wishes for Teachers 16
Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers, in partnership with azcentral, provided $700,000 this fall to 140 deserving teachers throughout the state of Arizona. Fiesta Bowl Charities put forth $500,000 and used a text-todonate campaign and generous $100,000 donations from azcentral and the College Football Playoff Foundation to significantly increase its 2016 impact.

By submitting online applications, Arizona teachers in public and charter schools were eligible to receive $5,000 grants to fulfill their classroom wish. By random selection, teachers had their wishes granted throughout November and December by local Arizona community champions, celebrities and the college football community.

I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a $5,000 grant for teachers awarded by the Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers. This is an absolute dream come true as our classroom is in desperate need of books and some children size furniture to create a quiet reading corner. I am sharing this with both first grade classrooms and we are so thrilled. I want to thank you again for making this teachers dream come true!
Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers is an amazing opportunity provided to teachers! $5,000 is a lot of money. The exciting part about Wishes for Teachers is that the teacher can actually choose how to make their classroom or student’s wishes really come true - it is a clean win that no one can take away. Team Outreach Every year, Fiesta Bowl Charities provides each participating team with a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give back to the Arizona Community. This year, all studentathletes participated from the Cactus Bowl, PlayStation Fiesta Bowl and Overwatch Collegiate Championship teams, creating memories that will last forever!

An afternoon of fun and games was held at Notre Dame Prep with 110 Penn State players and children from Children’s Cancer Network and HopeKids Arizona. Kids and players were split into teams and they rotated through stations of kickball, the PlayStation gaming truck and an autograph session. Participants also received a PlayStation gift bag and Penn State posters.

Playing kickball with the Penn State football players was a dream come true for many of the HopeKids in attendance. Simple things like playing kickball are impossible for children in wheelchairs or for others who wear feeding tubes, trachs and other medical equipment that normally does not allow for physical play. The Penn State players treated our kids like they were normal, healthy kids and having social acceptance from college aged football heroes can bring a level of HOPE that they would have never imagined.

The Huskies took the field at Scottsdale Community College alongside the Unified Sports Clinic and Special Olympics Arizona athletes. They spent the day rotating through stations of football skills before playing in the PlayStation gaming truck. The holiday spirit was still in the air as players and athletes participated in a gift exchange to conclude the event. The athletes walked away with PlayStation swag bags, hats and signed Washington footballs.

Through this experience, SOAZ athletes and UW football players were able to exchange their skills and knowledge of sport with each other as all attendees felt the spirit of inclusion that comes from celebrating peoples abilities. This event provided a meaningful opportunity for athletes from SOAZ and UW to compete as teammates and friends revealing the greatness in all people, including those with disabilities.

The UCLA Bruins celebrated the holiday season alongside 65 children with the Muscular Dystrophy Association at Main Event Tempe. Players were teamed with children for a round of bowling before hitting the arcade and playing laser tag. Before leaving, each child was given a UCLA hat, trading coin, pin and wristband.
We are so thankful for the opportunity to work with Fiesta Bowl Charities. Through the Cactus Bowl community outreach event, our families were given an opportunity they will never forget and our kids left with a boost in spirits and self-esteem. The community is fortunate to have the support of the Fiesta Bowl Charities.

On Christmas morning, 115 Kansas State Wildcats volunteered their time with the Salvation Army at the Phoenix Convention Center. The players assisted low income families with haircuts, nail painting and serving hot meals. One special player even gave his own shoes to an eager and excited young boy, making it a memorable morning for players and families together.

I’m so pleased that the Cactus Bowl put on the Christmas event that took place with the Salvation Army. It was really an amazing event and it not only meant a great deal to the people that were there, but it meant a great deal to our players as well because they’re those kind of gentlemen, they love helping other people.

The Fiesta Bowl Overwatch Collegiate National Championship participants gave back to the Boys & Girls Club during their stay in the Valley. The Overwatch players spent an afternoon playing arcade games and laser tag with 20 kids from the Guadalupe Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley.

On September 29, approximately 150 kids from 13 different Phoenix-area Boys & Girls Clubs gathered for Spirit’s Second Annual Birthday Party. The Fiesta Bowl’s official mascot hosted children and Arizona’s favorite sports mascots who competed in friendly games of flag football under the lights at the Jerry Colangelo Boys & Girls Club.

Spirit’s Birthday is one of the most anticipated events we host here at The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix Jerry Colangelo Branch! This amazing event provides an opportunity for our youth, families and staff to gain an experience of a lifetime. We have limitless amounts of fun and share new memories each year. In partnership with USAA, Operation Santa hosted 22 children with parents deployed on active military duty for their own Christmas miracle at Dick’s Sporting Goods. This event would not have been possible without Fighter Country Foundation, which supports Airmen and their families. Every participant was given a $200 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card and a USAA volunteer to have as personal shopper. Along with memories that will last a lifetime, these special kids went home with new sports equipment, trampolines, fashionable clothes and more.

Almost as important as the amazing smiles we have on these deployed children are awesome smiles on all of the organizations supporting this endeavor. It is a true example of how a collaboration of entities all working together can create an event full of pure goodness. The experience these deployed families get to share with USAA, Dicks Sporting Goods, Fiesta Bowl Charities and Fighter Country Partnership reminds us why we do what we do!

At the first-ever Fiesta Bowl Par 3 Challenge consisted of six media personalities who took a swing at the chance to donate $3,000 to a local charity. Playworks Arizona, The Be Kind People Project, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Children’s Cancer Network and Fighter Country Foundation were all represented, with Scott Pasmore from azfamily hitting the ball closest to the pin resulting in a donation to The Be Kind People Project.

More than 170 children from the Salvation Army Kroc Center, Boys & Girls Clubs, Luke Air Force Base and Fighter Country Club participated in the Fiesta Bowl Youth Football Clinic. The free non-contact clinic was led by former NFL athletes and coaches, as well as the Notre Dame Prep High School football team.

On Saturday, March 10, the Fiesta Bowl Running of the Bills Duck Race, presented by SRP, took over the Scottsdale Waterfront. By adopting a duck(s), participants were entered into the race and had a chance at the grand prize of $7,500. More than 15,000 ducks racing down the canal and the winning duck/participant took home the cash prize. In addition to the main event, participants enjoyed a block party complete with food trucks, live music, outdoor games and a cornhole tournament. The proceeds from this event were donated to Fiesta Bowl Charities.

AeroSpace Challenge 44
The Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge, presented by Kadima.Ventures, continues to be the largest STEM program for grade school and junior high students in Arizona. This year, over 200 teams created a scale model and written report about an international logistics mission to colonize Phobos, a moon of Mars. From January 22-24, the teams presented their plans to provide a sustainable base for a colony of 24 people in 10 years to Honeywell engineers. The top two teams from each day – six in total – moved onto the finals, held on February 10. As champions of this year’s event, Team Serendipity from Ss. Simon and Jude, will receive scholarships to U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp and an on-field appearance at the 48th Annual PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

Once again, the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade dazzled the community before 100,000 fans who lined the streets of Central Phoenix. With a theme of “Champions of the Community” and Grand Marshal Shane Doan, the Parade featured 105 acts of brilliantly colored floats, giant balloons, equestrian units, specialty and charitable groups, local celebrities and marching bands as they make their way along the two-mile parade route. Numerous volunteers and charitable organizations participated in the event, which has become one of the state’s crown jewels.

Each year, more than 3,000 men and women donate their time to volunteer with the Fiesta Bowl organization. The heartbeat of the organization starts with the Fiesta Bowl volunteers, Board of Directors, Ambassadors and Yellow Jacket Committee members as they work endless hours to ensure that the bowl games and community events are successful.
The money that goes back into the Arizona community is sizable and notable. It’s not all about the athletes and incredible moments, over the years I have gotten passed that. Rather, it’s about the charitable giving which is why I do what I do.

Born in Arizona in 1971, Spirit is the official mascot and heart of the Fiesta Bowl organization. Spirit tirelessly dedicates himself to nearly 120 appearances across the state each year. From hyping up crowds at various Arizona events, to spreading joy at local schools, Spirit brings smiles and warmth wherever he goes.

In November, Fiesta Bowl Charities was awarded the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Greater Arizona Chapter, 2017 Outstanding Corporation/ Foundation Award. The Award recognizes Fiesta Bowl Charities commitment to the community and the $10 million given in charitable donations over the last seven years to youth, sports and education across the state of Arizona. Fiesta Bowl Charities was nominated by A New Leaf after donating $15,000 to the nonprofit in 2016 to support A New Leaf’s Faith House Women’s Crisis Center in Glendale.
We’re known by many for the elite football games we put on each year, and we’ve had several of the most memorable in college football history. We’re proud of that reputation and equally thrilled to be recognized for the year-round work we do to enhance the lives of Arizonans each and every day.

The National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA) and the Fiesta Bowl crowned the University of Maryland as the winner of the inaugural Community Service Award. Maryland was chosen from a pool of three finalists and received the award for the Share the Shell community outreach program. The Community Service Award was presented by NACDA and the Fiesta Bowl in November at an on-campus event hosted by Maryland.

The award was designed to recognize NACDA member institutions in Division I honoring exceptional athletics departments that make volunteerism and community service a way of life. Maryland received a trophy for permanent display and $10,000 for its chosen charity. Additionally, the Fiesta Bowl partnered with NACDA to award a sixth scholarship as part of the annual John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. Awarded to a student from an Arizona-based four-year institution, the McLendon Scholarship, presented by Fiesta Bowl, was awarded to Mia Mazon from Arizona State University.

The Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Champions program, made up of the Send-A-Vet, Send-A-Teacher and Send-AKid initiatives, donated 17,745 tickets to veterans and active military, underprivileged children and educators all from the Arizona community.
