CHASE FIELD The sidelines aren’t what football fans are accustomed to seeing. After all, there is a dugout behind the visitor’s bench, a bullpen behind the northern endzone, no nets behind the goal posts, and the scoreboard provides a section dedicated to runs, hits and errors. Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is one of only a handful of Major League Baseball stadiums that has been configured to accommodate a football game. It’s one of the most innovative and fan-friendly Major League Baseball stadiums, Chase Field has served as the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks since the spring of 1998. Designed by renowned architect Ellerbe Becket, Chase Field is located in the heart of downtown Phoenix, only 4.3 miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, with Light Rail access on-site. During that time, it has hosted seven Cheez-It Bowls (formerly Cactus Bowl) as well as various other sporting and live musical events, in addition to its baseball activities.

Chase, formerly Bank One Ballpark, has played host to the 2001 World Series Champions and 2011 MLB All-Star Game. From its retractable roof – that is operated by a pair of 200-horsepower motors – to its signature swimming pool, Chase Field is one of the Valley of the Sun’s most recognizable landmarks. The ballpark covers approximately 1,300,000 square feet, including the playing surface, and is divided into six levels: the field, main concourse, press level, suite club level, upper concourse and mechanical level.

AIR FORCE FALCONS AIR FORCE THIS SEASON

AIR FORCE HEAD COACH

A strong rushing attack and discipline play led Air Force to its 400th program win this season. The Falcons went 10-2 for fourth best in program history and finished 7-1 in conference play. Air Force was a perfect 6-0 at home in Colorado Springs. Starting on October 12, Air Force went on a seven-game winning streak, the program’s longest in one season since 1998 and seventh overall in program history. An early-season 30-23 win over Colorado snapped a five-game losing streak to the Buffaloes. Air Force heads to the Cheez-It® Bowl for the second time in program history, while becoming bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016.

In 2006, Troy Calhoun left the Houston Texans of the NFL as offensive coordinator to serve as the head coach for Air Force’s football team, where he has led the program to great success, going 97-69 overall. In his first season with the Falcons, Calhoun led Air Force to nine wins, tying him for the most wins ever at a service academy by a first-year head coach, matching the mark set by Ben Martin in 1958. The 2007 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year is in his 13th season with Air Force and has guided his teams to 10 bowl bids, including this year’s Cheez-It Bowl.

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS WASHINGTON STATE THIS SEASON

WASHINGTON STATE HEAD COACH

Washington State won its last two home games to become bowl eligible for the fifth consecutive year and enters the Cheez-It® Bowl for the second time in program history. Starting the season 3-0 and ranked in the top-25, the Cougars (6-6, 3-6) rolled through their non-conference slate with wins against New Mexico State, Northern Colorado and Houston. During conference play, the Cougars defense got back on track at homecoming against Colorado where they limited the Buffs to 320 yards and recorded three takeaways for a 41-10 victory. Finding themselves in close games in conference play, three of WSU’s losses were by four points or less.

In his first trip to the Insight (now Cheez-It®) Bowl, Mike Leach engineered the largest comeback in NCAA Division I bowl history after Texas Tech scored 31 unanswered points in the second half of regulation and a touchdown in overtime to win over Minnesota, 44-41. Leach, the 2018 AFCA National Coach of the Year and 2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year, is now in his seventh season at Washington State after being named the Cougars’ head football coach, Nov. 30, 2011. He has guided WSU to five bowl appearances in his first seven years, including each of the last four years, a program first. Leach brought a proven record of winning to Pullman, serving 10 seasons as a head coach, all at Texas Tech (2000-09), where his program earned 10 bowl bids and recorded a school-record of 84 victories during his tenure.

CHEEZ-IT® BOWL GAME PREVIEW At first blush, the Cheez-It® Bowl featuring Washington State and the Air Force Academy appears to be a match made in mismatch heaven. Washington State passes the ball. Air Force runs it. It is about as simple as that. Few teams on college landscape are more diametrically opposed in their style of play than the Cougars and Falcons, who will meet in the 2019 edition of the Cheez-It® Bowl, which has played in three different venues since its inception in 1989.

It is a style difference, not a mindset difference. An illustrious son of Washington explained it well. “Now if a ‘6’ turned out to be ‘9,’ I don’t mind,” Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and college football aficionado Jimi Hendrix wrote. “I got my own world to live through, and I ain’t going to copy you.” There is more than one way to skin an opponent. Innovation, meet creativity.

A deeper dig into this year’s game lends a different perspective.

Outside-the-(tackle)-box thinking, meet application.

Both Air Force (10-2) and Washington State (6-6) have gained a significant edge by using schemes that are on far opposite sides of the norm. The approach not only provides an edge by creating week-to-week preparation headaches for opponents, but it also has turned bowl game appearances into an almost yearly occurrence over the last decade.

Apparent polar opposites can attract.

CHEEZITBOWL.COM

Both Washington State and Air Force move the football better than most. They score more than most. They win more than most. Air Force enters on a seven-game winning streak, the program’s longest since the 1998 team won eight in a row.

CHEEZ-IT BOWL GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) “I’ve always followed (Air Force), one, because they’ve always been a high-achieving team,” Washington State coach Mike Leach said. “That alone commands attention. And the other thing. You know, if I didn’t throw the ball … I admire the option, and I always felt our brand of football really kind of started with the wishbone, because what the wishbone always did such a good job of is distribution. All the skill positions touch the ball. “And they (Falcons) are pretty good at stretching the field side-toside, and better at stretching it upfield than they’ve ever gotten credit for, because some of those pitches take place after they begin to get upfield. I feel like a lot of our space concepts came from the wishbone. The distribution, in particular, was something we admired the most. And in our case, it became how to do it.” The Falcons and Cougars can stretch some fields. Each rank in the top 22 NCAA Division I in scoring, Washington State ranking 11th (39.2 points a game) and Air Force tied for 22nd (34.3). Cougars quarterback Anthony Gordon, in his first season as a starter, has thrown for an NCAA-high 5,228 yards, more than 500 yards more than LSU’s Joe Burrow, and he also leads the NCAA with 5,220 yards total offense and 38 completions per game. The Cougars also lead Division I in passing yards (444.3 per game) and are sixth in total offense (516.8 yards). Falcons quarterback Donald Hamilton III orchestrates an option attack that has rushed for an average of 292.7 yards per game, third in the NCAA entering bowl season, and 37 touchdowns. Four Falcons, including Hammond III, have rushed for at least 490 yards. And guess who leads the NCAA in passing efficiency? Air Force, of course, which has a 203.7 rating despite throwing only 114 passes, the-second fewest in Division I. The Falcons are second in third-down efficiency, converting 54.8 percent of the times.

Oil up the scoreboard and prepare for a big night. “Oh, goodness,” Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun said. “What a challenge it is, most certainly. Mike has done a sensational job, even going back at Kentucky, even prior to that. Some of the places where they were, he’s just been incredible. He’s the one that truly launched Oklahoma back into such a prominent program. And the job he did at both Texas Tech and, certainly, the amazing job they’ve done at Washington State. The production, the quality of their execution, and really the difficulty in trying to assimilate what they do. “It’s going to be a gigantic challenge. You’ve heard me say it before. I do think our guys embrace challenges. This is going to be one unlikely encounter that will be real.” A Leach-coached team has played Air Force in this game once before, when he guided Texas Tech to a 55-41 victory in the 1995 Copper Bowl played in Tucson’s Arizona Stadium. Leach’s offense generated 619 yards total offense. The Falcons had 449 yards rushing and 532 total yards. While area fans could bond with Pac-12 Washington State because of its many trips to the Valley, the Falcons could expect support from the local military installations, including Luke Air Force Base in suburban Glendale and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. “There will be a bunch of people in blue,” Calhoun said. “We might be the away team, yet at the same time, we will have a bunch of people there … a bunch of proud, proud veterans. For us to be part of the Cheez-It® Bowl is beyond a privilege.” The Cougars became bowl eligible with a 54-53 victory over Oregon State on the penultimate week of the regular season, a victory Gordon celebrated by rolling his helmet onto the homer turf at Martin Stadium.

CHEEZ-IT BOWL GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Bowling is more than an indoor sport for these teams. Washington State will play in a bowl game for a school-record fifth straight season and for the sixth time in seven seasons. Calhoun has led the Falcons to nine bowl appearances in the previous 12 seasons. The Cougars postseason success is one of the reasons athletic director Pat Chun recently announced the addition of another year to Leach’s contract, which now runs through the 2024 season. Washington State’s bowl history dates to a 1916 Rose Bowl appearance against Brown, a 14-0 victory that included some extra-curricular work. Cougars’ players served as extras in the movie “Tim Brown of Harvard” in the morning before practicing in the afternoon. In the afternoons, coach William “Lone Star” Dietz supervised practice in what was described as his normal coaching attire — a silk hat, Prince Albert cutaway coat, striped pants, yellow gloves and a walking stick. Is there any reason to doubt the sometimes theatrical Leach fits on this campus? Quarterbacks Timm Rosenbach and Drew Bledsoe took their turns in leading the Cougars to bowl games in the 1980s and early 1990s, and Bledsoe had one of the best games in Cheez-It® Bowl history in 1992, when the game was known as the Copper bowl and was played in Tucson. Bledsoe signaled what was to come in a lengthy NFL career by throwing for 476 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and he drove the Cougars to the 5-yard line before Aaron Price kicked the winning field goal in a 31-28 victory over Utah. Washington State ran 89 plays and had 636 yards total offense. The Cougars’ recent bowl run includes a 20-14 victory over Miami, Fla., in the 2015 Sun Bowl and a 28-26 victory over Iowa State in the 2018 Alamo Bowl, where mustachioed quarterback Gardner Minshew II starred. Minshew, like Gordon playing in his only season as the starter, passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to beat the Cyclones as the No. 12 Cougars set the school season record with 11 victories. Returnee wide receiver Renard Bell had a touchdown reception,

and Max Borghi capped his strong freshman season on a 10-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for a decisive 28-20 lead. Air Force may have been a relative late-comer to college football while playing its first varsity schedule in 1956, but the Falcons made an almost immediate ascension into the bowl game elite under legendary coach and offensive maestro Ben Martin. Martin won 96 games in 20 seasons and had a stretch of six straight winning seasons, more difficult in those days because the Falcons were an independent and often had to schedule up (and play away from home) in order to find meaningful competition. Martin took the 9-0-2 Falcons, the only undefeated team in academy history, to the 1958 Cotton Bowl in his first season, where they played TCU to a 0-0 tie in 48-degree weather. Bill Parcells spent the 1978 season as the Falcons’ coach after Martin retired, and the only three coaches who have followed him — Ken Hatfield, Fisher DeBerry and now Calhoun — have made postseason play a common occurrence, a remarkable record considering the constraints placed on the pool of recruits available to the Air Force or any military academy, where post-graduate service is required. Calhoun has led the Falcons to nine bowl appearances in the previous 12 seasons, when they have compiled records of 10-3 twice, 9-4 twice and 8-5 twice. The 2016 team capped their most recent 10-3 season with a lopsided 45-21 victory over South Alabama in the Arizona Bowl in Tucson. In that one, the Falcons showed a little of the versatility they might bring into the Cheez-It® Bowl today. They had 460 yards total offense, 253 yards and rushing and 207 passing, while rolling up a dominating 20-minute, 52-second edge in time of possession. They passed only 10 times, but completed seven for big yardage. “I guess other than this bowl game — being an American and everything — I always root for the Air Force,” Leach said. “Couldn’t be more excited to get on the field and play a team of the quality of Air Force.” CHEEZITBOWL.COM

CONFERENCE AFFILIATIONS

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE • The Mountain West is headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. • In its 21st season, the MW is comprised of 11 all-sport members: the United States Air Force Academy, Boise State University, Colorado State University, Fresno State, University of Nevada, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, San José State University, UNLV, Utah State University and University of Wyoming. In addition, the University of Hawai‘i and Colorado College participate in the Mountain West as single-sport members in football and women’s soccer, respectively.

• The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders five MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, respectively, while Fresno State, San Diego State and San José State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central, Southern and Northern California. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean, while the addition of the women’s soccer program at Colorado College gives the MW an additional presence in the Rocky Mountains. • The Mountain West has marked several achievements during its first 20 years, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). • The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to

• Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men’s sports and 13 women’s sports, with women’s lacrosse a new addition for the 2017-18 academic year and beach volleyball having been added in 2015-16. • Additionally, the Conference is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men’s sports and two women’s sports.

PAC-12 CONFERENCE • The Pac-12 Conference is headquartered in San Francisco, California in the SOMA district.

• Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Pac-12 Conference renewed its undisputed claim as the Conference of Champions® in 2016-17, becoming the first conference to win 500 NCAA Championships. • The Pac-12 led the nation in 2017-18 with 13 NCAA crowns. • The Pac-12 has led or tied the nation in NCAA Championships in 52 of the last 58 years, the only exceptions being in 1980-81, 1988-89, 1990-91 and 1995-96 when the Conference finished second, and only twice finished third in 1998-99 and 2004-05.

participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. • In the inaugural year of the new College Football Playoff system, Boise State earned the automatic slot into a New Year’s Six bowl game as the highest-ranked champion from the Group of Five 5 conferences. The Broncos defeated then 10th-ranked Arizona 3830 in the VIZIO Fiesta Bowl. • In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the-art basketball instant replay system. • The MW has produced 1,214 All-America selections among its 18 sponsored sports. • In the classroom, 212 student-athletes have earned Academic AllAmerica honors. • 43 MW student-athletes have been awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. • 50 Mountain West student-athletes have won individual NCAA championships, while the league is home to five team NCAA titles.

• For the 13th-consecutive year, the Pac-12 had the most or tied for the most NCAA titles of any conference in the country, winning at least six every year since 2000-01. No other conference has won doubledigit NCAA crowns in a single year, the Pac-12 doing so nine times, including a record 14 in 1996-97. • Spanning over a century of outstanding athletics achievements, The Pac-12 has claimed 526 NCAA Championships (300 men’s, 183 women’s, 30 combined), nearly 200 more than the next league. It was also the first to win 400 championships then surpassed 450 when Colorado and Utah joined the league in 2010-11. • On the women’s side, the story is much the same. Since the NCAA began conducting women’s championships 36 years ago, Pac-12 members have claimed at least four national titles in a single season on 26 occasions, including a current streak of 18-consecutive years, dating back to 2000.
