STADIUM FACTS CAPACITY: 72,158 PLAYING SURFACE: Natural grass (Tifway 419 Bermuda hybrid planted in early May, 2006 using stolons in an 11” bed of USGA sand mix with inclusions) LIGHTING: 700 Musco pre-aimed sports lights providing over one millionwatts of light. STADIUM HEIGHT: 233 feet from the playing surface to the top of the roof; approximately 19 stories high.
STATE FARM STADIUM With its retractable field and roof, Glendale’s State Farm Stadium is unlike any other venue in North America. The exterior design was the vision of renowned architect Peter Eisenman along with HOK Sport. The basic form of the design takes its cue from a barrel cactus and offers alternating vertical slots with smooth panels. The stadium was constructed with a roof containing two large panels that retract to uncover the entire playing field. The stadium’s most unique feature is a rollout field consisting of a 152,000 square-foot concrete stadium floor with an embedded utility grid. The natural grass field rests in a retractable, 12-million pound tray outside the stadium until game day for maximum sun exposure and nourishment. The tray takes approximately 45 minutes to move inside the stadium and rests atop tracks as it rolls in and out on a steel wheel set powered by small electric motors.
The stadium has permanent seating for 63,000 but expands to hold approximately 73,000 for mega-events like the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, College Football National Championship game and the Super Bowl. The stadium has a total of 88 luxury suites on two levels, club seating for 7,000 with access to private club lounge areas, lower bowl seating for 29,000 and upper deck seating for approximately 26,000 accommodate patrons. All seats are individual chairs with armrests and cup holders. The press box, located in the southwest corner, accommodates approximately 154 working media members. There is also a national television broadcast booth, a home coaches booth, a visiting coaches booth, an instant replay booth, an officials booth, a scoreboard and public address control booth, a stats booth and four radio booths. The 2011 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship Game pitting Auburn and Oregon drew 78,603 fans, the largest crowd in the history of State Farm Stadium.

THE PLAN
In 2002 the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors decided it needed a more unique trophy to compete with the trophies of the other national bowls – something that would make a statement. The original Fiesta Bowl Trophy was small, made of wood and slightly resembled the Heisman Trophy. Recognizing the need for something slightly more impressive, the board had in mind the perfect man for the job. Al Molina, a Fiesta Bowl Yellow Jacket Committee member, happened to be an internationallyrecognized jeweler. They tasked Molina with, what would become, a masterpiece of a trophy. With no budget, no guidelines and free rein over the design, Molina and members of the executive committee set out to create a truly historical work of art. Molina, refusing to create anything short of a masterpiece, told the board he would make the trophy on his own “nickel.”
THE CREATION
With just a little more than three months to bring the idea life, a team of experts set to work under the leadership of Al Molina and head designer Christopher Olson, who is considered the “champion of the trophy.” The trophy’s foundation entailed an intricate fabrication of five different shades of marble and granite, upholding the stunning complexities of the trophy. The center column was created using lapis lazuli, one of the most sought after stones in the world. Created to simulate the Arizona sunset, it was hand-carved in 18-karat yellow, green, red, peach and white gold. The sterling silver dome alone, enhanced with multi-colored windows created in jeweler’s enamel, took more than 96 hours to complete. Todd McFarlane, Grammy- and Emmy-winning producer/director
and founder of one of America’s top action figure manufactures, McFarlane Toys, used his rare talent for detail and accuracy to create the football players. He cast the eight perfectly-designed players in sterling silver to live on each side and corner of the structure. Ken Wilson, a former Disney “Imagineer” and inventor of the infamous lightsabers used in Star Wars, created the one-of-a-kind LED lighting display within the trophy. Weighing more than 200 pounds, the trophy design team knew even the strongest football team wouldn’t be able to hold it up in celebration after their Fiesta Bowl victory. This realization sparked the idea of the removable football, but not just any ole’ football. Made of 18-karat gold with jeweler’s enameled Fiesta Bowl sunburst marks, this football flaunts 2,187 pavé-set diamonds. The stones weigh a total of 50 carats, making up the stripes on the extravagant football, which is twothirds regulation size. Not one element of the design was created at random. The compass on the base of the trophy signifies the path of life. The players at the base depict those who support and uphold the team while the players above represent those who guard and protect the ball. The Greek word Nyvk, meaning “the goddess of victory,” is engraved on the curtain above the players. Designed in lotus flowers, the dome signifies purity of strength, power and heart of the victors. Finally, the perfection of the diamonds on the football represents the dedication of the winning team to their sport. After more than 3,000 hours of work, along with a frantic two a.m. call to fix a crack in the dome the night before the big reveal, the Molina Design Team was ready to unveil the masterpiece – a trophy like none other in collegiate athletics.

OHIO STATE HEAD C OACH On Dec. 4, 2018, legendary coach Urban Meyer announced his retirement and named Ryan Day his successor. Day served as acting head coach and led the Buckeyes to a 3-0 start in 2018, including a win over No. 15 TCU. Overall, Day is 16-0 in his Ohio State tenure. This season, Day led the Buckeyes to be ranked in the top-five nationally for both defense (second) and offense (fifth). A former New Hampshire quarterback, Day played for then-offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who he worked for as a quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles (2015) and San Francisco 49ers (2016).

The PlayStation® Fiesta has done it again. A premier purveyor of college football excellence, the Fiesta added to its legacy with yet another match of the nation’s elite in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Undefeated No. 2 Ohio State meet undefeated No. 3 Clemson. The can’t-miss game of the bowl season could be the best bowl game of the year… Oh, heck, let’s just say it … The 49th edition of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl IS the best game of the bowl season, and it requires neither a leap of faith nor a willing suspension of disbelief to get there. Of the three remaining unbeaten teams in contention for the CFP national championship, two are here at State Farm Stadium, and you could make a strong case that each is a co-equal to No. 1 seed as LSU. The margin of difference between 13-0, 13-0 and 13-0 teams seems layer-of-skin thin, more in the eye of the beholder that in evidence gleaned from the stat sheets or game logs. Be that as it may, one bowl game features the national champions from three of the last five seasons. The PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl. Clemson won its second NCAA championship in school history 2016 and took No. 3 last year, beating Alabama both times, once in a squeaker and once in a blowout. Ohio State was the first to win a championship under the current playoff format adopted in 2014, steamrolling Oregon for the most recent of its eight consensus NCAA titles. One of the CFP semifinals will be played on ad-revenue-bumping prime time TV, a wrinkle that goes directly to the method used by the Fiesta’s Founding Fathers to
usher themselves into the modern era when they sold NBC on a prime-time match between Penn State and Miami on Jan. 2, 1987. This one. One bowl game features two of the top four scoring offenses and two of the top three scoring defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision. You can guess which. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Ohio State first-year coach Ryan Day — each a finalist for the Maxwell Club’s national coach of the year award this season— understand more than most just what they are getting into.
“We have the utmost respect for what they (Tigers) have done,” said Day, who took over for Urban Meyer this season after serving the previous two seasons as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. “Not only winning national championships but continuing with that success. It’s very hard when you are the top dog and everyone is giving you their best shot to continue what they’ve done. Not only are they talented, but they’re very well coached. Our team is excited about this challenge.” Swinney won the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award in 2011 and was named the AP Coach of the Year in 2015, when the Tigers stopped Ohio State in in the CFP Semifinals in the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl and edged Alabama in the national championship game.

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) “Congratulations to Coach Day and the Buckeyes,” Swinney said. “They’ve been unbelievable. Just one of the most dominant teams every week all year long, and that’s an unbelievable accomplishment. Talented on both sides of the ball.” You may be able to play a big game that does not involve either Ohio State or Clemson, but when one is involved, it is a biggee. When they are matched, it draws national attention and respect. Clemson will bring a 28-game winning streak to the match, the longest current streak among Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Ohio State’s current 19-game is second. The Tigers have not lost since the seventh week of the 2017 season, during which time they have beaten Alabama twice and perennial bowl participants Louisville (twice) and Texas A&M (twice) and Notre Dame in nonconference games. The Buckeyes’ run includes a pair of victories over Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin (both this season) and wins over Penn State and Washington. Ohio State held the No. 1 spot in the first, fourth and fifth CFP rankings before being overtaken by LSU in the final poll after the conference championships games. The Buckeyes beat No. 8 Penn State, No. 13 Michigan and No. 8 Wisconsin by a combined 118-65 in their final three games but slipped a spot nevertheless. Ohio State is No. 1?
“I mean, I’m competitive, so sure,” Day said. ”Trying not to get too far into that. I thought we made our case, but it’s time to move on. Now it’s time to go play Clemson. I know the (selection committee) had a hard decision to make. If we want to go win the whole thing, we have to be able to play everybody, so now we’ve got a chance to play Clemson.” All-win, all-the-time Clemson had an unusual trip through the polls this season. Despite entering the season as the defending national champion and outscoring opponents by an average of 35.9 points per game, the Tigers slowly dropped from No. 1 in the AP Top 25 to second, then third, and then fourth even as they kept winning. They were ranked No. 5 behind Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State in the initial CFP poll and moved up only after losses by Penn State and Alabama dictated the changes.

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Clemson is the first team since Alabama in 1966 to open the season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll and finish the season with a lower ranking despite not losing a game, If the Tigers are tempted to break out the disrespect card, it seems to apply. Clemson is No. 1?
“You can only play the schedule that you got, and that’s what we’ve done,” Swinney said. “I don’t care what league you’re in, it’s incredibly difficult to win, to win them all. We’ve earned the right to get into postseason. We know at this point, you’re playing the best of the best. It doesn’t really matter if you are ranked first, second, third, or fourth. We’ve got a track record over the last nine years that kind of speaks for itself. I think our team has shown up with great focus and preparation each week, with great respect for every opponent, and has found a way to win.” Ohio State leads the nation with an average of 48.7 points a game and ranks fifth in total offense and rushing offense behind first-year quarterback starter Justin Fields and perennial top rusher J.K. Dobbins. Fields has 3,424 yards in total offense and has accounted for 50 touchdowns, 40 passing and 10 rushing. He has passed for 2,953 yards and thrown only one interception in 308 attempts, ranking fourth in passing efficiency at 190.3. He has season-high passing games of 305, 302 and 299 yards in his last four. Junior Dobbins ranks third in the nation with 1,829 yards rushing and is fifth with 20 rushing touchdowns. Dobbins and two-time Heisman Trophy Archie Griffin are the only running backs in school history with 4,000 career rushing yards. Dobbins had a career-high 211 yards rushing in the regular-season finale against Michigan. Wide receivers K.J. Hill and Chris Olave have 97 receptions and 21 touchdowns between them, and Hill is the school career leader with 197 receptions. Clemson’s offense is ranked in the NCAA top 10 in seven categories. It leads the nation with 81 touchdowns, is third with 547.7 yards per game and is fourth with a 46.5 scoring average. The unit is driven by halfback Travis Etienne and quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Etienne rushed for an even 1,500 yards, averaging a NCAAleading 8.24 yards per carry, and had 17 rushing touchdowns. He also had two more scores on 29 pass receptions. Etienne had two 200-yard games this season, gaining 205 in the season opener against Georgia Tech and a career-best 212 against Wofford in November.

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Lawrence has thrown for 3,172 yards and 34 touchdowns with eight interceptions and is seventh in the nation with 176.50 passing efficiency rating. He had his second 300-yard game of the season in the 62-17 victory over Virginia in the ACC championship game, when he threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns. He has six career 300-yard games and is 14-0 as starter since taking over early last season. Wide receivers Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins have 107 receptions and 21 touchdowns between them. Ohio State defensive end Chase Young brings a most impressive resume into the game, leading a defense that is second in the NCAA in total defense at 247.6 yards a game. Junior Young won three major awards, the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards as the defensive player of the year and the Ted Hendricks Award as the top defensive end after compiling a school-record and nation-leading 16 sacks. He is the school leader with 30 1/2 career sacks.
Clemson ranks first in the nation Division I in total defense, scoring defense and opponents’ touchdowns, giving up only 244.7 yards and 10.6 points a game while giving up only 16 touchdowns. Linebacker Isaiah Simmons is the ringleader. He won the Dick Butkus Award as the best linebacker in the nation while compiling a team-high 93 tackles, seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Strength, meet strength.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF EVERY GAME C OUNT S
SELECTION C OMMITTEE
The College Football Playoff (CFP) determines the national champion of the top division of college football. The format fits within the academic calendar and preserves the sport’s unique and compelling regular season.
A dedicated group of high integrity football experts, with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors, comprise the selection committee. Members of the selection committee are Rob Mullens (chair), Gary Barta, Frank Beamer, Paola Boivin, Joe Castiglione, Ken Hatfield, Chris Howard, Ronnie Lott, Terry Mohajir, Ray Odierno, R.C. Slocum, Todd Stansbury and Scott Stricklin.
SELECTION C OMMITTEE The selection committee ranks the teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field, using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparison of results against common opponents to decide among teams that are comparable.
SELECTION C OMMITTEE RESP ONSIBILITIES • Rank the top 25 teams and assign the top four to semifinal sites. • Assign teams to New Year’s Six bowls.
TRADITION The New Year’s holiday period belongs to college football, with two semifinal games rotating annually among the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl.
• Create competitive matchups. • Attempt to avoid rematches of regular-season games and repeat appearances in specific bowls. • Consider geography.
CHAMPIONSHIP MONDAY The two winning teams from the Playoff Semifinals compete for the College Football Playoff National Championship. The national championship game is in a different city each year, always on a Monday night.
UNIVERSAL AC CESS No team qualifies automatically, so every Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team has equal access to the CFP based on its performance during the season.
REVENUE The format produces revenue for all FBS schools and for Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences that meet a predetermined threshold of grants-inaid.
Participants in the New Year’s Six Bowls Both participants in the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls are contracted outside the playoff arrangement (Big Ten and Pac-12 to Rose Bowl; SEC and Big 12 to Sugar Bowl; ACC to Orange Bowl against the highest ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame). If a conference champion qualifies for the College Football Playoff, then the bowl will choose a replacement from that conference. When those bowls host the Playoff Semifinals and their contracted conference champions do not qualify, then the displaced champion(s) will play in one of the other New Year’s Six bowls. When not hosting Playoff Semifinals, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls will welcome displaced conference champions and the top-ranked champion from a non-contract conference. The highest-ranked available teams will fill any other berths. The selection committee will make the pairings.
GOVERNANCE University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame serve as the Board of Managers and govern the administrative operations, with commissioners (the Management Committee) managing the event. A small staff in the CFP office in Irving, Texas, carries out the day-to-day responsibilities.
