YEARS IN EXISTENCE 50, first Fiesta Bowl was in 1971 LAST YEAR’S GAME Clemson 29, Ohio State 23 ZIEGLER FIESTA BOWL MUSEUM 7135 E. Camelback Rd., Suite 190 Scottsdale, AZ 85251

STADIUM FACTS CAPACITY: 72,158 PLAYING SURFACE: Natural grass (Tifway 419 Bermuda hybrid planted in early May, 2006 using stolons in an 11” bed of USGA sand mix with inclusions) LIGHTING: 700 Musco pre-aimed sports lights providing over one millionwatts of light. STADIUM HEIGHT: 233 feet from the playing surface to the top of the roof; approximately 19 stories high.

STATE FARM STADIUM With its retractable field and roof, Glendale’s State Farm Stadium is unlike any other venue in North America. The exterior design was the vision of renowned architect Peter Eisenman along with HOK Sport. The basic form of the design takes its cue from a barrel cactus and offers alternating vertical slots with smooth panels. The stadium was constructed with a roof containing two large panels that retract to uncover the entire playing field. The stadium’s most unique feature is a rollout field consisting of a 152,000 square-foot concrete stadium floor with an embedded utility grid. The natural grass field rests in a retractable, 12-million pound tray outside the stadium until game day for maximum sun exposure and nourishment. The tray takes approximately 45 minutes to move inside the stadium and rests atop tracks as it rolls in and out on a steel wheel set powered by small electric motors.

The stadium has permanent seating for 63,000 but expands to hold approximately 73,000 for mega-events like the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, College Football National Championship game and the Super Bowl. The stadium has a total of 88 luxury suites on two levels, club seating for 7,000 with access to private club lounge areas, lower bowl seating for 29,000 and upper deck seating for approximately 26,000 accommodate patrons. All seats are individual chairs with armrests and cup holders. The press box, located in the southwest corner, accommodates approximately 154 working media members. There is also a national television broadcast booth, a home coaches booth, a visiting coaches booth, an instant replay booth, an officials booth, a scoreboard and public address control booth, a stats booth and four radio booths. The 2011 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship Game pitting Auburn and Oregon drew 78,603 fans, the largest crowd in the history of State Farm Stadium.

THE PLAN

FIESTA BOWL TROPHY BY

MOLINA

In 2002 the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors decided it needed a more unique trophy to compete with the trophies of the other national bowls – something that would make a statement. The original Fiesta Bowl Trophy was small, made of wood and slightly resembled the Heisman Trophy. Recognizing the need for something slightly more impressive, the board had in mind the perfect man for the job. Al Molina, a Fiesta Bowl Yellow Jacket Committee member, happened to be an internationallyrecognized jeweler. They tasked Molina with, what would become, a masterpiece of a trophy. With no budget, no guidelines and free rein over the design, Molina and members of the executive committee set out to create a truly historical work of art. Molina, refusing to create anything short of a masterpiece, told the board he would make the trophy on his own “nickel.”

THE CREATION With just a little more than three months to bring the idea life, a team of experts set to work under the leadership of Al Molina and head designer Christopher Olson, who is considered the “champion of the trophy.” The trophy’s foundation entailed an intricate 4

2 0 2 0 - 2 1 P L AY S TAT I O N ® F I E S TA B O W L

fabrication of five different shades of marble and granite, upholding the stunning complexities of the trophy. The center column was created using lapis lazuli, one of the most sought after stones in the world. Created to simulate the Arizona sunset, it was hand-carved in 18-karat yellow, green, red, peach and white gold. The sterling silver dome alone, enhanced with multicolored windows created in jeweler’s enamel, took more than 96 hours to complete. Todd McFarlane, Grammy- and Emmy-winning producer/director and founder of one of America’s top action figure manufactures, McFarlane Toys, used his rare talent for detail and accuracy to create the football players. He cast the eight perfectly-designed players in sterling silver to live on each side and corner of the structure. Ken Wilson, a former Disney “Imagineer” and inventor of the infamous lightsabers used in Star Wars, created the one-ofa-kind LED lighting display within the trophy. Weighing more than 200 pounds, the trophy design team knew even the strongest football team wouldn’t be able to hold it up in celebration after their Fiesta Bowl victory. This realization sparked the idea of the removable football, but not just any ole’ football. Made of 18-karat gold with jeweler’s enameled Fiesta Bowl sunburst marks, this football flaunts 2,187 pavé-set diamonds. The stones weigh a total of 50 carats, making up the stripes on the extravagant football, which is two-thirds regulation size. Not one element of the design was created at random. The compass on the base of the trophy signifies the path of life. The players at the base depict those who support and uphold the team while the players above represent those who guard and protect the ball. The Greek word Nyvk, meaning “the goddess of victory,” is engraved on the curtain above the players. Designed in lotus flowers, the dome signifies purity of strength, power and heart of the victors. Finally, the perfection of the diamonds on the football represents the dedication of the winning team to their sport. After more than 3,000 hours of work, along with a frantic two a.m. call to fix a crack in the dome the night before the big reveal, the Molina Design Team was ready to unveil the masterpiece – a trophy like none other in collegiate athletics. OREGON THIS SEASON No. 25 Oregon is coming off its second consecutive Pac-12 Championship after defeating then No. 13 USC, 31-24. The Ducks finished second in the Pac-12 North and made the most of their opportunity, winning their fourth-straight matchup against a ranked opponent. The 50th Anniversary of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will be the Ducks second New Year’s Six Bowl game in as many years and the third time that Oregon plays in the Fiesta Bowl. MATCHUP HISTORY The 50th Anniversary of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will mark the first meeting between Iowa State and Oregon. OREGON HEAD COACH In just three seasons as Oregon’s head coach, Mario Cristobal has led his team to two Pac-12 Championships and two New Year’s Six Bowl games. Cristobal has established a culture of winning within the program, securing 25 victories over the last two years, along with back-to-back top recruiting classes within the Pac-12. Cristobal is one of 11 current FBS head coaches to win 20-plus games over his first two seasons leading a Power 5 program. IOWA STATE CYCLONES IOWA STATE THIS SEASON No. 10 Iowa State enters the 50th Anniversary of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl coming off a historic season. The Cyclones (8-3) finished first place in the final Big 12 regular-season standings for the first time in program history and the eight Big 12 wins are a school best. The PlayStation Fiesta Bowl berth is the first New Year’s Six Bowl game in history for Iowa State. The matchup against No. 25 Oregon will be the Cyclones’ sixth opponent in the final College Football Playoff poll this season, the most nationally. MATCHUP HISTORY The 50th Anniversary of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will mark the first meeting between Iowa State and Oregon. IOWA STATE HEAD COACH Matt Campbell has changed the culture and success of the Iowa State football program since taking the helm prior to the 2016 season. Campbell owns the best winning percentage in school history and has positioned the Cyclones in the national rankings and Bowl games during his tenure. In 2020, Campbell led Iowa State to a first-place finish in the Big 12 regular season-standings and a spot in the Big 12 Championship game, which were both firsts in school history. GAME PREVIEW OREGON VS

IOWA STATE

10 2 0 2 0 - 2 1 P L AY S TAT I O N ® F I E S TA B O W L

The PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl has risen to its position among the bowl elite through equal parts imagination, innovation and creative decision-making. Its path to the top has been marked by a steady series of proactive strikes, moves that others might call ‘why-didn’twe-think-of-that?’ moments. And just when you thought the Fiesta Bowl could not get any fresher, the 50th Anniversary game includes another series of firsts. For starters, No. 10 Iowa State and No. 25 Oregon will play each other for the first time, despite the fact both programs can trace their history to the 1890s. The Cyclones have achieved their highest-ever ranking in the College Football Playoff poll and will make their first appearance in a New Year’s Six bowl game. Oregon is in its third Fiesta Bowl, its first since 2013. Then there is this. Both starting quarterbacks hail from the southeastern suburbs of Phoenix, just down the road from State Farm Stadium. Iowa State junior Brock Purdy attended Perry High in Gilbert and Oregon sophomore Tyler Shough went to Hamilton High in nearby Chandler.

“In an unprecedented season, it is our great pleasure to reward two teams coming off of great years,” said Patrick Barkley, who is the chairman of the Fiesta Bowl board of directors. “What a great way to celebrate our 50th anniversary, with two Arizonans at quarterback.” Shough has had a hand in sustaining the excellence of an Oregon program that has been among the best in the Pac-12 and the nation for the better part of the last two decades. The Ducks’ conference title this season was their second in as many years and their sixth since 2009. They have won two straight bowl games and six of their last nine, and they have appeared in a bowl game every season but one since 2005. They also played in two national championship games during that stretch – one in the same stadium they will step foot into this season. “You play in our conference and you play some phenomenal programs and teams. And then to be able to have some of these bowl experiences and play some of the elite programs in college football.” IOWA STATE COACH MATT CAMPBELL

Given the Bowl’s history, we should have seen this coming.

F I E S TA B OW L .O R G

11

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Purdy has helped coach Matt Campbell elevate the Cyclones’ program to unprecedented heights. The PlayStation Fiesta Bowl is the Cyclones’ fourth straight bowl game, a program first. Iowa State (8-3) has won eight games in three of the last four seasons and had a winning record in all four, the best four-game stretch in school history. Campbell has been named the Big 12 Coach of the Year three times in his five seasons, including this season. “You play in our conference and you play some phenomenal programs and teams. And then to be able to have some of these bowl experiences and play some of the elite programs in college football,” said Campbell, the only coach in program history to have beaten every conference opponent. “It helps you grow into what you want to become and really where you want to go and stay. What a phenomenal opportunity to play Oregon and their great history and their great tradition. A great challenge for us and certainly a great opportunity.” To say the Cyclones have taken advantage of recent opportunities is an understatement. Iowa State has beaten six ranked teams in Campbell’s five seasons, and if some were considered upsets, maybe they should be reconsidered in light of current trends. “To be able to endure all that stuff and still come out in the end with a Pac-12 title speaks loudly, and at the same time a lot of lessons learned along the way will provide a tremendous boost for our program to continue on that upward trajectory.” OREGON COACH MARIO CRISTOBAL

Iowa State beat No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 TCU in 2017 and was ranked as high as No. 14 in the AP poll that year. The Cyclones finished the season 7-5 by beating another ranked team, No. 20, Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. Their 38-31 victory at Oklahoma in 2017 was their first in Norman since 1980. They beat No. 6 West Virginia in 2018 and No. 23 Texas last season.

12 2 0 2 0 - 2 1 P L AY S TAT I O N ® F I E S TA B O W L

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Iowa State split with Oklahoma this season, winning 37-30 on Oct. 3 and falling 27-21 in the Big 12 title game. Purdy threw for 254 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another touchdown in the first meeting, when Breece Hall rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Purdy passed for 322 yards and a touchdown and Hall rushed for two touchdowns in the Big 12 title game, a game that was decided in the final minute. Sophomore halfback Hall, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, enters Bowl Season with 1,436 rushing yards, the most in the FBS. Only Alabama’s Najee Harris had more rushing touchdowns than Hall’s 19. Purdy was 13th in FBS with 2,594 passing yards. Linebacker Mike Rose is the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Will McDonald IV enters Bowl Season with a Power Five-leading 9½ sacks. If Iowa State’s path to the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl followed a typical season-long progression, Oregon’s was the polar opposite. The Ducks (4-2) finished second in the Pac-12 North to Washington, but the Ducks gained a spot in the Pac-12 Championship game against unbeaten USC because Washington could not play due to coronavirus protocols. The Ducks had not won in a month and had one game cancelled, but they stopped USC 31-24 when Shough and backup quarterback Anthony Brown threw two touchdown passes apiece and nickel cornerback Jamal Hill had two interceptions. “To be able to endure all that stuff and still come out in the end with a Pac-12 title speaks loudly, and at the same time a lot of lessons learned along the way will provide a tremendous boost for our program to continue on that upward trajectory,” said Oregon coach Mario Cristobal, who is 25-9 with a pair of Pac-12 titles and New Year’s Six bowl appearances in three seasons. “There is no sign of anyone being content. We will never let that happen. The fact that we get to play an opponent of this caliber, our guys are very well aware of who we are playing and how good they are.”

13

GAME PREVIEW (CONT.) Shough entered Bowl Season 15th in the FBS in passing efficiency, with 13 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He also is second in the team’s well-rounded rushing attack with 332 yards and two more scores. Purdy and Shough were premier recruits from a state that has become a breeding ground for college quarterbacks. If history is a guide, the 50th Fiesta Bowl could be an offensive show. Perry beat Hamilton 6563 in 2017, when the two were seniors on opposing sides. Purdy was

14 2 0 2 0 - 2 1 P L AY S TAT I O N ® F I E S TA B O W L

the Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year that year and Shough was an Elite 11 participant. “I know there will be a lot of attention surrounding that, which adds to the excitement of the game,” Cristobal said. “First and foremost, it is important to note that we are playing an excellent football team with a strong culture and tremendous leadership. We have a ton of respect for them.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF EVERY GAME COUNTS

SELECTION COMMITTEE

The College Football Playoff (CFP) determines the national champion of the top division of college football. The format fits within the academic calendar and preserves the sport’s unique and compelling regular season.

A dedicated group of high integrity football experts, with experience as coaches, student-athletes, college administrators and journalists, along with sitting athletics directors, comprise the selection committee. Members of the selection committee are Rob Mullens (chair), Gary Barta, Frank Beamer, Paola Boivin, Joe Castiglione, Ken Hatfield, Chris Howard, Ronnie Lott, Terry Mohajir, Ray Odierno, R.C. Slocum, Todd Stansbury and Scott Stricklin.

SELECTION COMMITTEE The selection committee ranks the teams based on the members’ evaluation of the teams’ performance on the field, using conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparison of results against common opponents to decide among teams that are comparable.

TRADITION The New Year’s holiday period belongs to college football, with two semifinal games rotating annually among the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl.

SELECTION COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES •

Rank the top 25 teams and assign the top four to semifinal sites.

CHAMPIONSHIP MONDAY

Assign teams to New Year’s Six bowls.

The two winning teams from the Playoff Semifinals compete for the College Football Playoff National Championship. The national championship game is in a different city each year, always on a Monday night.

Create competitive matchups.

Attempt to avoid rematches of regular-season games and repeat appearances in specific bowls.

Consider geography.

UNIVERSAL ACCESS No team qualifies automatically, so every Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team has equal access to the CFP based on its performance during the season.

REVENUE The format produces revenue for all FBS schools and for Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences that meet a predetermined threshold of grantsin-aid.

GOVERNANCE University presidents and chancellors from all 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame serve as the Board of Managers and govern the administrative operations, with commissioners (the Management Committee) managing the event. A small staff in the CFP office in Irving, Texas, carries out the day-to-day responsibilities.

PARTICIPANTS IN THE NEW YEAR’S SIX BOWLS Both participants in the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowls are contracted outside the playoff arrangement (Big Ten and Pac-12 to Rose Bowl; SEC and Big 12 to Sugar Bowl; ACC to Orange Bowl against the highest ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten and Notre Dame). If a conference champion qualifies for the College Football Playoff, then the bowl will choose a replacement from that conference. When those bowls host the Playoff Semifinals and their contracted conference champions do not qualify, then the displaced champion(s) will play in one of the other New Year’s Six bowls. When not hosting Playoff Semifinals, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls will welcome displaced conference champions and the top-ranked champion from a non-contract conference. The highest-ranked available teams will fill any other berths. The selection committee will make the pairings.
