2020 - Week 11 COLLEGE FOOTBALL

INSIDER | 2020 | WEEK 11

Quote of the week “No matter how old I am, I’ll remember this one forever.” - Notre Dame Quarterback Ian Book after defeating No. 1 Clemson 47-40 in double OT

TEAM TO WATCH:

FLORIDA

Florida had lost three straight games to Georgia in the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” rivalry and Georgia was favored again this year. Kyle Trask changed the narrative, as the Florida quarterback threw for four touchdowns, marking the first time in history a Southeastern Conference player has done so in five consecutive games. No. 8 Florida defeated No. 5 Georgia, 44-28, behind Trask’s career-high 474 yards and four touchdowns on 30-of-43 passes. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead and the two teams went back-and-forth until Trask connected with Kenmore Gamble for a 24-yard TD, kicker Evan McPherson knocked in a 50-yard field goal and Trask sent the Gators to the locker room with a 14-yard touchdown pass and a 38-21 lead. The Gators put the game away, allowing only seven second half points while limiting the Georgia passing game to just 112 total yards. Florida needs to keep momentum in its quest for an SEC East title and a SEC Championship date with No. 1 Alabama. The Gators welcome Arkansas and former Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks to the Swamp this week.

TEAM OF THE WEEK:

BYU

The Cougars are off to their best start since 2001, when they started 12-0, after routing Boise State 51-17 on Friday night. It was the first time BYU defeated Boise State on the road in six years. Quarterback Zach Wilson continued to show why he belongs in the Heisman Trophy race, throwing for 359 yards, three passing touchdowns and adding one rushing touchdown. Running back Tyler Allgeier was another star, carrying the ball 14 times for 123 yards and two scores. The Cougars defense held Boise State to just 61 rushing yards and forced two turnovers despite the Broncos having the ball for 33-plus minutes. With the 51-point performance, BYU has now scored 40-plus points in all but one game this season. BYU moved up one spot in the rankings to No. 8 and will face North Alabama on November 21. BYU has been projected to play in the 2020 Fiesta Bowl by multiple experts.

GOLDEN HISTORY:

2001 — OREGON STATE MAKES A STATEMENT Oregon State put a serious exclamation point on its sudden emergence on the national college football scene. The Beavers took control in the third quarter to post a convincing 41-9 victory over Notre Dame in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl in front of 75,428, the third largest crowd in Fiesta Bowl history and the largest for a non-national championship game.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT:

AARON RODGERS

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers shined on Thursday night football, throwing for 305 yards and four touchdowns in a win over the San Francisco 49ers, 34-17. Rodgers has led Green Bay to a 6-2 record and primed for a playoff run. The Packers signal caller leads the NFL in quarterback rating at 87.7. In 2003, Rodgers guided California to an Insight Bowl (now named Guaranteed Rate Bowl) victory as he completed 27-of-35 passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns. He tied Cal’s Bowl records for most completions, touchdowns and rushing touchdowns. Rodgers’ completion percentage of 77 percent stands as a Guaranteed Rate Bowl record. California defeated Virginia Tech, 52-49, and Rodgers was named Offensive Player of the Game.

Oregon State finished the season with an 11-1 record and ranked fourth in the final Associated Press poll, both marks being the best in school history. The win was the first bowl victory for the Beavers in 39 years and arguably their biggest win of all time. The Fighting Irish, who entered the game on a seven-game winning streak, were never able to get their offense going. They finished with 17 yards rushing and three turnovers, after setting a NCAA record with only eight turnovers during the regular season. It is the 20th Anniversary of that historic Oregon State win. Offensive Player of the Game and current Beavers Head Coach Jonathan Smith sat down to reminisce on the Fiesta Bowl Football Focus Podcast. Click here to listen.

Fiesta Bowl Football Focus Podcast We hope you haven’t missed the distinguished roster of guests on the Fiesta Bowl Football Focus Podcast. Next up is a visit with Oregon State Head Coach Jonathan Smith, who also served as quarterback in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl when the Beavers overpowered Notre Dame, 41-9. Two of the most respected college athletics administers in the country in Oklahoma Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and Texas Athletics Director Chris Del Conte were recent guests. While their schools may be rivals, they are close longtime friends who share common values and funny stories.
