INSIDER | 2020 | WEEK 13

Quote of the week “I told myself I needed a big game, especially in this one.” - Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler after throwing for 301 yards and four TDs and defeating Oklahoma State

TEAM TO WATCH:

Northwestern The Wildcats posted a huge win over No. 10 Wisconsin to take a convincing lead in the Big Ten West Division. Northwestern jumped out to a 14-0 lead and 17-7 win over the Badgers. Northwestern’s stingy defense led the way once again, as the Wildcats forced four three-and-outs and had five takeaways – including three interceptions. Other than Wisconsin’s lone scoring drive, none of the other 16 drives went more than 42 yards. Northwestern quarterback Peyton Ramsey finished 23-of-44 for 203 yards and two touchdowns and hit Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman for a 25-yard score with just 56 seconds left in the half to give the Wildcats the lead for good. With the win, Northwestern jumped to No. 11 in the AP rankings and is No. 8 in the inaugural CFP rankings, one year after a 3-9 season. The Wildcats will travel to Michigan State this Saturday at 1:30 pm MST on ESPN2.

TEAM OF THE WEEK:

Tulsa

Tulsa had a flair for the dramatic in its primetime appearance last Thursday night. After a scoreless first half, the fireworks came out late in a 30-24 double overtime win over Tulane. The game only got to overtime when the Golden Hurricane tied the game on third-string QB Davis Brin’s 37-yard Hail Mary to Juan Carlos Santana as time expired. Tulsa came back from a 14-0 deficit in the final 10 minutes of regulation, marking the third straight comeback victory for the Golden Hurricane. After trading field goals in the opening overtime, Tulsa extended its winning streak to five when Zaven Collins picked off Michael Pratt and ran the ball back 96 yards for the winning score in the second overtime. Brin, who came in in relief after two Tulsa quarterbacks were injured, was 18-of-28 for 266 yards and two touchdowns. No. 25 Tulsa has a 5-1 record after an opening loss at Oklahoma State and hosts Houston this week.

GOLDEN HISTORY:

1982 – FIESTA BOWL MOVES TO NEW YEAR’S DAY In the first Fiesta Bowl to be played on New Year’s Day, Penn State outplayed USC to record a 26-10 victory. Heisman Trophy finalist Curt Warner outdistanced Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen to earn his second consecutive Offensive Player of the Game honors. For the second straight Fiesta Bowl, Warner scored the first time he touched the ball, this time on a 17-yard scamper, and wound up with 145 yards on 26 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Allen was held to 85 yards on 30 carries and fumbled twice. He was never able to get on track against the tenacious Nittany Lion defense.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT:

Ashtyn Davis

Former Cal safety Ashtyn Davis had a career day on Sunday for the New York Jets. Davis recorded his first double-digit tackle game, totaling 12 with eight being solo, and added a fumble recovery. Davis was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets and has worked his way into the lineup throughout the year. Since Week 8, the former Golden Bear has played in every game and has 18 solo tackles and a pass deflection. In 2018, Davis represented Cal in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl (formerly the Cheez-It Bowl). He recorded two solo tackles and helped the Golden Bears’ secondary hold TCU to 28 total passing yards.

After falling behind 7-0, Chip Banks got the Trojans on the board by taking a Todd Blackledge interception 20 yards for a touchdown. Penn State scored 17 unanswered points on two touchdowns and a field goal. One score came on a 52-yard bomb from Blackledge to Gregg Garrity in the second quarter. USC added a field goal, but both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter and the Nittany Lions held on for the victory. PSU concluded its season with a No. 3 national ranking, while improving its Fiesta Bowl mark to 3-0.

50th Anniversary Celebration To celebrate its storied history that began with a vision from nine community leaders in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has unveiled a special logo and other initiatives to commemorate its 50th Anniversary season. The Fiesta Bowl will recognize some of the top players, coaches, moments and milestones with a series of Top 50 lists, offer merchandise with the 50th Anniversary logo, honor its 50-year season ticket members, host a volunteer appreciation event open to every volunteer over the 50-year history and more.
