2020 - Week 14 COLLEGE FOOTBALL
INSIDER | 2020 | WEEK 14
Quote of the week “Culture doesn’t change overnight – it just doesn’t, but wins like today show what we’re capable of.” - Michigan State Head Coach Mel Tucker after upsetting No. 8 Northwestern, 29-20
TEAM TO WATCH:
iowa state
The Cyclones are on the verge of program history after defeating then-No. 17 Texas, 23-20, on Saturday. The win keeps Iowa State atop the Big 12 standings and a win over West Virginia, or an Oklahoma State loss, would seal its place. Iowa State has never won a championship in the Big 12 or the Big Eight, with its last conference title in 1912. History could be made in Head Coach Matt Campbell’s fifth season. The Cyclones trailed by 10 in the third quarter but managed to hold off the Texas offense, kicked two field goals and took the lead on running back Breece Hall’s 3-yard TD run with 1:25 left on the clock to complete the comeback. Hall totaled 91 yards on 20 carries while Gilbert Perry HS graduate Brock Purdy went 25-of-36 passing for 312 yards and a touchdown. Next up, No. 9 Iowa State will host West Virginia on December 5 with a Big 12 Championship trip in sight. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm MST on ESPN.
TEAM OF THE WEEK:
oregon state
If you listened to the latest episode of the Fiesta Bowl Football Focus Podcast, you know how much the “Civil War” rivalry means to Oregon State Head Coach Jonathan Smith. The game gives the winner pride and bragging rights in the state of Oregon. Smith’s Beavers now own both of those after upsetting then-No. 15 Oregon, 41-38. The Ducks had won three-straight against Oregon State. Beavers quarterback Chance Nolan took his first collegiate snap after starting quarterback Tristan Gebbia limped off and scored on a 1-yard run with 33 seconds left to break the Ducks’ streak. Running back Jermar Jefferson rushed for 226 yards and two touchdowns, continuing his impressive season. Jefferson has run for at least 100 yards every game this season and is on pace to break 1,000 yards despite the shortened season. Oregon State looks to extend its winning streak to three as it travels to Utah on Saturday, with kickoff set for 8:30 pm MST on ESPN.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL INSIDER | 2020 | WEEK 14
GOLDEN HISTORY:
2003 – ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES IN HISTORY People are calling the 2003 Fiesta Bowl the greatest game in college football history. That includes the experts, the media, the die-hard fans, the general fans and the bashers of the BCS. That’s what a doubleovertime, edge-of-your-seat, palm sweating, instant classic can do. It can silence the critics and make people realize that college football is the greatest game in the land.
ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT:
Deshaun Watson Former Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson feasted on Thanksgiving with 318 yards and four touchdowns on 17-of-25 passing in the Houston Texans’ 41-25 win over the Detroit Lions. It was Watson’s sixth 300-plus passing yard game this year and the four touchdowns ties a season-best for the Texans’ signal caller. He sits in the NFL’s top five for passing yards and touchdowns this season. PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl fans know that Watson’s big-time performance is nothing out of the ordinary for him. In the 2016 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, Watson went 23-of-36 for 259 yards and a touchdown, plus 57 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. He earned Offensive Player of the Game honors and helped send Clemson to its second consecutive national championship appearance.
In a game that had it all, Ohio State stopped Miami on three consecutive plays from the 1-yard line in the game’s second overtime to escape with a 31-24 victory and claim the school’s fifth consensus national championship. A pass from Craig Krenzel to Chris Gamble fell incomplete, as fireworks and Miami players swarmed the field. However, a late flag was thrown for pass interference, giving Ohio State a first down at the 2-yard line. Three plays later, the Buckeyes scored on a sneak by Krenzel to send the game into a second overtime. Ohio State scored quickly to begin the second frame, as star freshman running back Maurice Clarett sprinted in from five yards out. Miami took over and had the ball first-and-goal from the two but was stopped on four consecutive plays in one of the most important goal line stands in college football history.
50th Anniversary Celebration To celebrate its storied history that began with a vision from nine community leaders in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has unveiled a special logo and other initiatives to commemorate its 50th Anniversary season. The Fiesta Bowl will recognize some of the top players, coaches, moments and milestones with a series of Top 50 lists, offer merchandise with the 50th Anniversary logo, honor its 50-year season ticket members, host a volunteer appreciation event open to every volunteer over the 50-year history and more.
