Week 1 . 2022

Coming off a 3-9 season, the Wildcats started the 2022 season in Dublin with a Big Ten Conference game against Nebraska. Northwestern trailed, 28-17, when the Huskers scored two touchdowns :26 apart with 9:09 left in the third quarter. But the Wildcats recovered the ensuing onsides kick and immediately scored on a short field with Cam Porter’s 3-yard touchdown run on a direct snap to close the gap to 28-24, while holding Nebraska scoreless the rest of the way. Northwestern took the lead for good when Evan Hull ran it in from four yards out only :26 into the fourth quarter following an interception by Cameron Mitchell. Quarterback Ryan Hilinski completed 27-of-38 passes for 314 yards and two touchdowns in his Northwestern debut. Hull finished with 192 rushing yards on 22 carries and added five catches for 55 yards. Northwestern has the week off before hosting Duke on Saturday, September 10.

TEAM TO WATCH: Notre Dame TEAM OF THE WEEK: Northwestern Quote of the week

“I might have a few Guinness — or some Jameson or something. I don’t know if that’s OK. I don’t have to drive, so.”

The Fighting Irish look to rebound from a rough second half in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State. Head Coach Marcus Freeman had a full offseason to rejuvenate the Irish and the energy around South Bend has been rocking. The season opener sees No. 5 Notre Dame travel to Ohio State to face the second-ranked Buckeyes. Not exactly the easiest first-ever regular season game as head coach for the former Buckeyes star Startingplayer.quarterback

Ty Buchner is a dual threat to hurt defenses with his feet or with his arm. His top target might be one of the nation’s top tight ends on the roster, 6-foot-4 junior Michael Mayer, who had seven catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the Fiesta Bowl. Defensive end Isaiah Foskey and safety Brandon Joseph are established stars for Notre Dame. Kickoff in the Horseshoe is Saturday, September 3, at 4:30 pm PHX time on ABC.

It’s an immediate test for new Oregon Head Coach Dan Lanning, taking No. 11 Oregon to Atlanta to face the defending national champion and No. 3 Georgia. A year ago, Lanning led the Dawgs to the nation’s best defense and now he opens as a 17-point underdog according to Caesars Sportsbook. The over/under is 51. In a matchup that could have College Football Playoff implications, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is back to lead the offense. Will Lanning bring his defensive mastery to shut down his former team and propel the Ducks into the College Football Playoff conversation? We’ll see at 12:30 pm PHX on September 3 on ABC.

Starting at quarterback for Kansas State in the 2017 Cactus Bowl, Thompson was a seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft but has performed arguably the best of any NFL quarterback in the preseason. Leading the Dolphins to a 26-24 win over Tampa in the opener, he went 20-of-28 for 218 yards and a touchdown. From there, Thompson’s stock continued to rise against Las Vegas and Philadelphia, and many have called him the unofficial Most Valuable Player of the preseason. Thompson finished the preseason 36-of-48 passing for 450 yards and five touchdowns, with no interceptions. He led the NFL by a wide margin with a 138.4 passer rating.

Known for providing many of college football’s most memorable moments, the Fiesta Bowl has come together with Vrbo, part of Expedia Group, and ESPN via Disney Advertising on a title partnership that will make the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl one of college football’s premier annual postseason matchups. As a member of the College Football Playoff New Year’s Six, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl will serve as a CFP Semifinal this season, kicking off on Saturday, December 31 with two of the nation’s four highest-ranking teams battling for a spot in the CFP National Championship. Both organizations have a rich history for their innovation and for bringing people together to make memories that last a lifetime. Known as a “Bowl of Firsts,” the Fiesta Bowl was the first to secure a title sponsor back in 1986 and Vrbo created the first online platform for travelers to book private whole homes, beach houses, cabins and condos for their family vacations. At the heart of the Fiesta Bowl Organization is a simple mission: to enhance organizations that contribute to the success of their communities through youth, sports and education. Through its two annual bowl games in the Valley, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl and the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, as well as community events throughout the year, Fiesta Bowl Charities has selected 40 Arizona nonprofits through its 2022-23 Grant Cycle. This is the fifth consecutive season that Fiesta Bowl Charities has donated $3 million or more to nonprofits and teachers across Arizona, the most of any college football bowl organization on an annual basis.

Recognized statewide as the highest-attended single day event with 100,000 attendees, the Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Lerner & Rowe will take its traditional two-mile march through Central Phoenix, on Saturday, December 17, at 10 a.m. This year marks the 50th edition of the Fiesta Bowl Parade and, in tribute to the incredible legacy built by citizens from the State of Arizona, the theme for the Fiesta Bowl Parade presented by Lerner & Rowe is “Legends Made Here.”
