TEACHER FEATURE School: Navajo Elementary School Mission Statement: Explore Your World, Discover Your Learning, Design Your Future, Ignite Your Character One of Navajo Elementary’s core beliefs is giving encouragement to try new things, explore the world and tackle unexpected problems. That belief was tested in August of 2018 when Navajo Elementary School was shut down and relocated after a fire broke out at the school. Suffering severe smoke, water, and asbestos damage, the interior of the building was destroyed. With one day to move locations, principals, teachers and committed members of PTOs helped make the transition easy for students and families! Fiesta Bowl Charities met up with the teachers and staff of Navajo Elementary during Teacher Appreciation Week in April. It was a blast throwing an ice cream social for very deserving teachers and staff! Fiesta Bowl Charities is committed to education and supporting our state’s teachers on a year-round basis. Last year, Fiesta Bowl awarded $1,000,000 to teachers across Arizona, impacting 50,000 students in 168 schools. Thank you to all of our teachers!

The staff, Scottsdale Unified School District and the community really stepped up and were amazing after the fire. Everyone went a mile a minute and put in so much extra time into getting things in place and set up because our students deserved it. Doing the right thing by kids is at the root of all of our decisions and our kids deserved a great facility and amazing teaching and learning. I knew our staff's dedication and commitment to kids was great, but I was truly amazed and extremely proud at just how much everyone stepped up.We are very eager to get back to our original Navajo campus but we have made this campus our home for the time being. Students and staff have been working very hard this year and I am very proud to work at Navajo and be part of this team.” Matthew Patzlaff, Principal

POSITIVE PARTNER

Event: MDA Summer Camp at Whispering Horse Ranch Fiesta Bowl Charities and Spirit enjoyed an afternoon with MDA at their summer camp! Spirit joined in on the fun of Pioneer Day and spent time building butter sculptures, digging for gold and eating snow cones. It was a pretty perfect afternoon. Kids with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and related lifethreatening diseases face daily challenges that often make “just being a kid” difficult. As their muscles progressively get weaker, children may lose basic functions such as walking, dressing, eating, talking or even breathing. MDA Summer Camp gives kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them, during a life-changing all-inclusive week of fun and friendship, all at no cost to their families. Summer Camp offers a world of possibilities and awesome adventures to campers – from swimming and horseback riding to zip-lining, adaptive sports and camp dances. We have medical experts on-site and available 24-hours a day at camps nationwide. Our kids always say camp is better than Christmas! PG 4

We had the pleasure of having Spirit from the Fiesta Bowl join us this year, which provided smiles all over camp that day. We are so appreciative of the support the Fiesta Bowl provides to the MDA! Dana Koza, Development Specialist, Muscular Dystrophy Association

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CENTRAL ARIZONA The children of the Boys & Girls Club in Prescott didn’t have an adequate play space. When they learned that the Fiesta Bowl and KaBOOM! would be building a playground for them, they pitched their ideas and desires for their dream play space on design day. On March 23, 2019, the kids’ visions came to life! With the help of 200 volunteers, the Fiesta Bowl Charities Playground Builds Program unveiled its seventh playground and creaged a space for over 1,100 kids annually. We can’t wait to see where our next playground goes!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Arizona are honored to be the recipient of a generous gift from Fiesta Bowl Charities. This new playground is so much more than a place to play. It is the first step in our plans to address the wait list in Prescott, allowing us to serve more families who need us most. We are thrilled to be sharing this gift with all of our Prescott area neighbors – a beautiful new space for our community to enjoy for years to come. VOLUNTEER EVENT

Event: Child Crisis Arizona Shelter On April 25, the Fiesta Bowl team spent time at the Phoenix emergency shelter for Child Crisis Arizona. We assembled beds and cribs for the children in the Emergency Placement Services program. Child Crisis Arizona believes every single child matters and that together we can nurture safe kids and strong families. Child Crisis Arizona provides emergency shelter, foster care, adoption, counseling, early education, home visitation and parenting support services to Arizona’s most vulnerable children and families. Fiesta Bowl Charities was thrilled to spend the morning supporting such a great organization with an inspiring mission. The Fiesta Bowl volunteer program has a base of over 3,000 people from across the state who come together to work and support all Fiesta Bowl events, charitable activities as well as the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, CheezItŽ Bowl and Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade, presented by Cheez-It. During the 2018-19 season, Fiesta Bowl volunteers contributed 34,000 hours to the Arizona Community.
