GRASSROOTS

FIFA inspires girls and boys to play football. FIFA’s Grassroots Programme is the core foundation of our development mission, aimed at encouraging girls and boys around the world to play and enjoy football without restrictions. Grassroots focuses on the enjoyment of the game through small-sided team games, and teaching basic football technique, the value of exercise and fair play.

EDITORIAL

ALL THE BEST The first edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards™ certainly lived up to its billing in terms of prestige and glamour – which was only natural, given the array of stars who honoured FIFA with their presence in Zurich on the evening of 9 January 2017. It was an occasion for the world of football to come together and celebrate, as a galaxy of light-hearted FIFA Legends rubbed shoulders with the best-in-class nominees and award winners for 2016. The new silver trophy, inspired by the World Cup, was awarded for the first time and has already set the standard for global football’s individual gongs. Relive the event by turning to page 6, where you will find a gallery of photographs. Enjoy!

FOR THE GAME. FOR THE WORLD.

In June 2017, the FIFA Confederations Cup will get under way in Russia. Local residents and visitors to Moscow have been reminded of that fact since the end of December, as several of the capital’s underground trains have been decorated in the theme of the tournament. The designs on the carriages also offer information for those travelling to the matches. Russian midfielder Denis Glushakov, who attended the unveiling of the trains, is looking forward to the competition with great anticipation: “This tournament will be a real test of our strength.” In 2016, 136 member associations were able to benefit from FIFA’s women’s football development programmes. in town. At the head of the queue this year is a man who is new to the Premier League and on his first “foreign assignment”: Antonio Conte. It is fair to say that more than a few eyebrows were raised when the Italian joined Chelsea, but Conte has certainly won over the doubters as his brand of attacking football has propelled The Blues to the top of the tree. “We have to try and discover his [Conte’s] secret,” said a certain Pep Guadiola, who is now calling the shots at Manchester City, ahead of the showdown between the two sides in early December. His battle cry was to no avail though as Guardiola and his men promptly lost 3-1 – and at home, to boot. Chelsea and Roman Abramovich have seen no fewer than 11 managers come and go in the last nine years, but Conte is well on the way towards bucking that trend by getting the best out of players such as

EUROPEAN TITLE RACES

GERMANY

Once again there are some familiar faces towards the foot of the Bundesliga – Werder Bremen, SV Darmstadt 98 and Hamburger SV – but there is a fresh wind blowing up at the top in the shape of RB – officially Rasenballsport (literally “grass ball sports”) but sponsored by Red Bull – Leipzig, who have well and truly thrown the gauntlet down to serial champions Bayern Munich in their very first season in the German top flight. Could we be in for a thrilling finish to the Bundesliga season for once? They are certainly taking the new boys seriously in Munich. Or at least that’s what it looks like. Serie A has been somewhat of a procession in recent years, with Juventus strolling almost unopposed to the scudetto every year since 2012. The Old Lady have tended to get off to a flying start and leave their rivals trailing in their wake, so it is little wonder that even a dropped point here and there is often cause for celebration for people outside the black-and-white half of Turin – as was the case in the autumn when Juve slipped to defeats at Internazionale, AC Milan and Genoa, giving their closest challengers renewed hope – however small – that they may be able to go the distance for once. This year, Juve’s main contenders are AS Roma, who are surprising many with their staying power at the head of the chasing pack. Still led by the indefatigable Francesco Totti, as they have been for the past 18 years, the Romans also have another ace up their sleeve this season in Edin Džeko, a man who had been written off by many after a poor season last time proved his critics wrong though by boun

“ITALY ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK” One of AS Roma’s key performers, Alessandro Florenzi epitomises the new generation of Italian footballers. We spoke to him about his lengthy lay-off with a knee injury, the city of Rome and Francesco Totti.

THE INTERVIEW Alessandro, when will you be back on the pitch? Alessandro Florenzi: The knee is making good progress after the cruciate ligament injury. It’s going pretty well and we’re all happy with the way things are going. What we need to do now is take a close look at how the knee stands up to increasing levels of strain. What do AS Roma mean to you? The club is like a second family to me, my second home. Even when I was a young boy, I dreamt of pulling on the shirt for this club one day and I did everything I could to make that dream come true. The fact that I managed it makes me really proud.

“Rome’s got everything: history, culture, sport. You can’t help but fall in love with a place like Rome the moment you get there.”

Can Roma win the scudetto again after 16 years? We will certainly pull out all the stops to snatch the title away from Juventus, but it’s going to be hard – although we’ve got a good team and are improving all the time.

Francesco Totti may well retire at the end of the season. Will you take over the captain’s armband from him? Who knows, Francesco may carry on playing, and let’s not forget that Daniele De Rossi is currently the vice-captain. He does a really good job – he’s a true leader.

“Antonio Conte has taken Italian football forward.”

Do you live in Rome itself? Yes, but not in the centre, I live in the outskirts. Rome’s a fantastic city, it’s my home. There’s always something going on here. It’s got everything: history, culture, sport. You can’t help it, with a place like Rome it’s love at first sight [laughs].

Italy did very well at the Euros and have maintained that level in the World Cup qualifiers so far. But for me personally, I’m just concentrating on getting fit again. I want to make a full recovery from my cruciate ligament injury before I even think about the World Cup.

Where does Serie A stand on the global football ladder? Our league is well on its way back to the top. That’s what we’re working hard towards in Italy, and I think all clubs have taken this aim on board. Serie A is still not at the level of the English Premier League, but I think that soon we will be able compete pretty well with the best leagues in the world. Top players are signing new contracts in Italy again, which tells you all you need to know.

Antonio Conte has put Italy back on the map as far as coaching is concerned. Is his style of football the way it should be played? Definitely. I’m not surprised that Conte has continued to be successful at Chelsea. He’s a passionate coach and worker, and I personally am delighted that his vision and methods are also working in England. He’s taken Italian football forward: we did pretty well at the Euros in France, and that was mainly down to him. I have the greatest respect for Conte.

Can the national team also reach the top again? Definitely. We have a lot of experienced players, but we’ve also got young players who want to learn and who are increasingly prepared to put their skills to the test. Like my younger team-mates, I want to continue to benefit from the older players’ experience. And our new coach Giampiero Ventura wants us to play attractive football. He is really strong tactically. Is Italian football conservative and behind the times, as Arrigo Sacchi says? [Thinks] Not behind the times, but as far as tactics are concerned, Italian football is certainly conservative. What about the 2018 World Cup in Russia? Everyone who plays for his country wants to be there at the major tournaments.

You are one of the new generation of Italian players, and an ambassador for the Italian charity “Fondazione Telethon”. It’s a responsibility that I gladly take on. When someone calls me an important player who represents the future of Italian football, it makes me proud and delighted. And as far as the charity work is concerned, I’m discovering a whole new world as an ambassador. Helping people who suffer from rare diseases is very rewarding. I’m amazed at their strength, at how they cope every day. They love football too and support me and my team-mates. So taking on this role is my way of giving something back and I’ve also become a fan of theirs, which is something that means a lot to me. The role is close to my heart. For me, it’s simply about helping people in the world who are having a bad time of it.

Have you still got a secret football ambition? No, I fulfilled it when I started playing in Serie A. I think I’ve achieved a lot, although a few more trophies wouldn’t go amiss. You became a father in the summer with the birth of your daughter. How has that changed your life? A lot. Getting together with my future wife and the birth of my daughter are the best things that have ever happened to me. Becoming a father is something special. My wife, my daughter and my entire family are the rocks in my life and I hope that I am for them, too. At least something positive came out of my injury: I’ve been able to spend much more time with my baby daughter Penelope. Will you still be playing for Roma when you’re 40? [Laughs] I don’t know. I take life as it comes. Turning out for Roma is a great honour, especially if, like me, you come from a family who are all Roma fans. Collaboration: Alan Schweingruber

A FAIRY TALE RISE TO THE TOP Once upon a time, there was a little girl who struggled to find her way in life. Her relationship with her mum could best be described as “difficult” and she found herself living on the streets. For six long years, she moved from hostel to hostel in search of her place in the world, but one thing kept her going: her love of football. Fara Williams, meanwhile, holds a record number of England caps (more than 150 and counting) and has played in three European Championships and three FIFA Women’s World Cups™, most recently at Canada 2015, when England claimed bronze.

Spot on Fara Williams secures third place for England at the 2015 Women’s World Cup, converting a penalty in extra time to seal a 1-0 win over Germany.

FAVOURITE SHIRTS

Looking at the shirts worn by footballers over the past 50-plus years, one thing stands out: the styles may change, but the jersey never loses its importance. By Annette Braun

HISTORY It should be borne in mind, though, that trends never die out completely, for one simple reason: nostalgia. Lauding the stars and triumphs of yesteryear is all very well, but the retro look can raise unrealistic hopes of a return to the glory days that are etched in the memory. It’s not just about playing with materials, styles and designs – plenty of mind games are played, too.

CAMEROON’S LION AND PERU’S CLASSIC MAINSTAY National team shirts can also bridge two epochs, combining styles and creating something completely new in the process. Some of today’s fashions are similar to those of the 1970s, being light and body-hugging – and are eagerly embraced by players who need no invitation to display their impressive muscles by wearing a smaller size than is strictly necessary. Others, however, evoke the graphics favoured in the 1990s, such as the roaring lion on Cameroon’s shirt from 2012, which attempted to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents, or Spain’s red and yellow triangles on a white background from EURO 2016. Identity and tradition play an important role in jerseys. Peru appeared at the 1936 Olympic Games with a combination that would become the team’s trademark: a white shirt with a diagonal red stripe. It would be adorned with a white collar Cock-a-hoop Mexico’s keeper Jorge Campos caught everyone’s eye at the 1994 World Cup.

FROM COTTON TO POLYESTER Players need to feel comfortable in their shirts, which is why the fabric used tends to be the clinching factor, rather than the design. Tops made of cotton would become heavier from sweat or rain as the match progressed, and today’s versions are made of light, breathable polyester. That makes swapping shirts after the match easier, too, thus increasing players’ burgeoning collections. Every footballer has shirts that are prized possessions, but by the same token, every fan has a favourite shirt that he or she peels on when the mood takes them – it may be a bit faded and probably does not fit so well as in days of yore,

A PIE AND A PINT – AND THREE POINTS, PLEASE! Going to watch a match also means stocking up on snacks and drinks. But what do people eat at games? A glance at stadium menus from all over the world reveals a lot of grains and carbohydrates, and a rather peculiar aversion to the colour green. By Annette Braun and Jörn Kaspuhl (illustration)

FOOD TO CALM THE NERVES If, however, you fancy chowing down on a salad in a stadium, you’ll probably be left disappointed. You will find some green – on the pitch, on the shirts of certain clubs – but there is very little of it to be found in the stadium kitchens of this world as vegetables don’t seem to have found their way into fan fare ... not yet anyway, although you can certainly eat more healthily in stadiums in some countries in South-East Europe and the Middle East. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ...

A FIFA MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN When Rolf Kägi starts his working day early in the morning, his first task is to unlock all the gates and doors to the FIFA buildings at Hitzigweg and Sonnenberg, which are guarded at night by security staff, and to set all the buildings’ technical systems to “present”. When he gets to his desk, he catches up on his e-mails and checks what’s on the agenda for that day: What needs attention? Which air vent filters need to be changed? Are any external tradespeople expected and when? Was anything reported overnight? Have the cleaning staff found that anything is missing or broken? “Because you never know exactly what will await you each morning, no two days are alike,” says Rolf. The 52-year-old Swiss employee has worked at FIFA for nearly 13 years and, as he says, is still learning every day. He has to – in his job it’s important to keep up to date with the latest developments in technology. He used to work as a bricklayer until one day he spotted the advert for the position at FIFA. “It’s hardly possible to train for this type of job,” explains Rolf, “because

CELEBRATION

PAUL POGBA In his home country of France, Paul Pogba was the subject of a maths question last summer that required the students to examine a picture of the midfield star in typical celebratory pose. Pogba’s imitation of the “dab” was creating a sensation, hence the question. Originating in US hip-hop, the dance, in which the practitioner raises an arm while simultaneously dropping the head towards the elbow of the other arm in a gesture that resembles sneezing, is increasingly finding favour among athletes. Pogba is renowned for doing the dab after scoring a goal, as seen here after he put France 2-0 up on their way to a 5-2 victory over Iceland in the EURO 2016 quarter-finals, and he is also considered a dab hand at the dance in football circles. The students taking the maths test had to figure out the mathematical dimensions of the world’s most expensive player’s pose, i.e. whether the two triangles formed by his upper body and arms constituted a rectangle. “The dab is useful, have I passed? #maths,” tweeted Pogba, who must feel blessed on two counts: his goals regularly transform the pitch into a dance floor, and his cult celebration is clearly a hit with a certain group of schoolkids: no prizes for guessing how they celebrated the end of the test.
