EDITORIAL

NEW HORIZONS You have in your hands the very first issue of the new FIFA magazine, FIFA 1904. Compared to its predecessor, a 40-page publication which appeared weekly over the last two years, the new monthly magazine is bigger and will contain more in-depth stories and interviews over 68 pages – still, of course, in four language editions: English, French, German and Spanish. ‘More to read and more time to read it’ is our motto. FIFA 1904 – the name a nod to the year in which world football’s governing body was founded – will continue on the path taken by the FIFA Weekly, but will take the concept a step further, bringing you news and stories about football from around the world, about FIFA projects and competitions, about the stars and their national teams and clubs. We want to invite you and the rest of the global football community to join us in celebrating football’s successes, particularly the achievements of FIFA’s development programmes, and reliving the emotions that our game awakens in people worldwide. With FIFA 1904, you can also keep your finger on Illustration: Stephan Walter

FOR THE GAME. FOR THE WORLD.

The FIFA Executive Committee unanimously said „yes“ to wide-ranging reforms, which include more transparency, the creation of the FIFA Council, a quota of women, and limits on terms of office. If the Congress also gives its approval on 26 February, the amendments will be incorporated into the FIFA Statutes.

Seven ambitious teams, eight thrilling matches, 272,312 captivated spectators, one winner: the 13th FIFA Club World Cup, held in Japan from 10 to 20 December 2015, was won by FC Barcelona, who beat River Plate in the final. The Catalans also set a new record by lifting the prestigious trophy for the third time after previous victories in 2009 and 2011.

FIFA BALLON D´OR 2015

ANNUAL RENDEZVOUS

Five up for Messi The Argentinian after the awards ceremony at the Zurich Kongresshaus. Back: Thiago Silva (left) and Neymar.

8

/ FIFA 1904

What is the only occasion when adoring fans can rub shoulders with the best footballers on the planet? Why, the FIFA Ballon d’Or, of course – the glamorous gala for everyone. FIFA 1904 took a peek behind the scenes.

Laughing easily, Paul Pogba seems to to come out of his shell in the company of global football stars. He exchanges hugs and wisecracks with Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, Marcelo and Sergio Ramos in the exclusive bar of the Hyatt Zurich. Also present is the legendary Samuel Eto’o, who has flown in to present the FIFA/FIFPro World XI awards at the FIFA Ballon d’Or. Frenchman Pogba towers over them all – physically, if not metaphorically. The 22-year-old Juventus midfielder with the striking hairstyle and extravagant jacket looks around the large, tastefully lit bar and greets some ex-pros, legends of the game – as he will be too, one day, especially if he shines at the EURO 2016 in his home country in June and July. Which is precisely what he hopes to do: after all, Les Bleus triumphed on home soil at the Euros in 1984 as well as at the 1998 World Cup, which augurs well for 2016.

MUTUAL APPRECIATION The fans have been waiting for hours outside the Hyatt to catch a glimpse of their idols. Pogba exchanges high-fives with his mates and night, accompanied by his bodyguards. A murmur goes around the crowd, followed by a deafening roar of approval. Later, as he steps onto the red carpet later in front of the Kongresshaus and his smiling face is displayed on a metre-high video wall above him, the fans outside the Hyatt go crazy again – but this time for the bushy-haired Marcelo. One by one, the stars are acclaimed by their noisy fans. However, the appreciation seems to be mutual. FIFA 1904 /

PRIVATE MOMENTS Paul Pogba, who is making quite a name for himself both on and off the pitch, is taking to the spotlight as if to the manor born. Selected as one of the FIFA/FIFPro World XI, he has yet to be considered a contender for the Ballon d’Or itself: according to the lists published by FIFA of votes cast by the coaches and captains of the 209 FIFA member associations and selected journalists, only Vanuatu captain Fenedy Masauvakalo selected the young Frenchman as his player of the year, so for now, it remains something to aspire to. After the ceremony, the candidates congregate in the player’s lounge. Marcelo’s young son, whose hair resembles his father’s, plays with the stars, who pose with each other for some private snaps. A grinning Messi clutches his fifth Ballon d’Or, while Ronaldo, who was the first to arrive with his small entourage, relaxes on the sofa, his arms stretched out. When someone he knows approaches him, he stands up and greets them cordially. Things will soon resort to normal on the pitch, however, when this Portuguese gentleman once again becomes a highly competitive, instinctive footballer, producing the sort of top performances that he hopes will unseat Messi this time next year. We – fans, players and FIFA – will then once again take in the festive atmosphere to see if he has been successful.

A VISIONARY CAMPAIGNER

Zurich Airport: Gerald Asamoah has just arrived after a long and tiring flight, but the German player, capped for his country 43 times, including in the final of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™, seems relaxed. He is also focused – in the car, before we have even reached the hotel, he wants to talk about his appearance at the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2015. Asamoah is here to collect the FIFA Fair Play Award on

behalf of the winners: all of those football associations and clubs around the world that are supporting refugees. Not only the big names such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, FC Santos, Arsenal, etc., but also many other smaller clubs have, along with their fans, donated money and goods, given out free tickets, displayed banners, provided educational opportunities, created partnerships with social welfare organisations, held open training sessions and intercultural tournaments, and much more in 2015 in order to welcome and support thousands of refugees. And thus once again, the unifying power of football, when it is correctly targeted, has been clearly demonstrated.

Asamoah’s father William himself had to flee from Ghana. Gerald Asamoah, from 1999 to 2011 a striker with FC Schalke 04 and now a youth coach and ambassador for the club, has long been passionate about social engagement alongside his sporting career, getting involved in projects run by Schalke as well as others. Indeed, he has direct experience of the issues facing refugees, as his father William, a journalist and opponent of the regime in Ghana, had to flee from his home in Mampong, via Italy and Poland to Germany, following a military coup in 1978, the year Gerald was born.

Kick-off The U-15 league in Malawi gets underway with a match between Chiradzulu (in red) and Zomba Urban (in blue).

With FIFA’s support, regional U-15 leagues are being launched in Malawi. Through targeted development, players will be helped to make the transition from youth to adult football. By Bruno Sassi

his car, John Kaputa is talking – more like passionately preaching – about the human potential in football you find in Malawi. „We have the talent and a ridiculous passion for football, but we lack the structure to lead these passionate, talented kids to professionalism. Or at least to learn how to play organisedly,“ he says, as we drive past a farmers’ market at the side of the M1 highway. It felt like an art director had been shaping the landscape all along the way from the Chileka International Airport, just outside Blantyre, to the city centre. Right in front of a vegetable stall,

THE INTERVIEW

Antonio Conte The 46-year-old wants to replicate his years of success at Juventus with the Italy national team.

30

/ FIFA 1904

„CATENACCIO HAS HAD ITS DAY“ After learning his trade under some of Italy’s finest coaches and after leading Juventus to three league titles, Antonio Conte is about to experience his first major tournament as a national team coach. FIFA 1904’s Alan Schweingruber sat down with him in Paris for a chat about EURO 2016, the crisis in Serie A, and the young footballers of today.

Antonio, what is your opinion of Italian club football at the moment? Antonio Conte: I think the best football is currently being played in England, followed by the leagues in Spain and Germany. Serie A is only in fourth place, there are no two ways about it. It didn’t used to be that way. That sounds wistful. It’s not wistful, it’s just the truth. Italian football used to be in a far better state. Serie A was one of the most attractive leagues in the world. Everybody wanted to play their football here. If you look at figures from the past, it is even clearer. When we became world champions in 2006, 66% of all players in Serie A were Italian, and that figure was even higher still when I was playing. Today, that figure is only 34%. Club owners are no longer prepared to invest huge sums of money in their teams. There is simply a lack of money in Serie A.

Claudio Porcarelli

How much does that affect the Italian national team? The national team obviously suffers as a result. There are fewer players available for selection. I am still optimistic about the future for Serie A though. We are on our way back to the top. FIFA 1904 /

31

THE INTERVIEW You’ll have to explain that one to us ... The clubs have started to invest more in youth football again, and the association has also launched good, ambitious development projects. We are now in a very exciting period, which I would compare with where Germany were about 15 years ago, when the German FA began to set up training centres in every region. And we all know how well that project turned out, with Germany winning the 2014 World Cup with the players who were just kids back then. But isn’t it also true that Italy should be able to win any tournament, regardless of how well Serie A is doing? (laughs) You could say that! You can never write off Italy. Can you win EURO 2016 with your team? Let’s just say that we have ambitions. It doesn’t matter to me if we are one of the favourites or not. Maybe we will just be dangerous outsiders in France. The main thing is that we prepare for this European Championship as well as we can. If all goes to plan we will play seven matches, so it would be a case of doing our best seven times. You have to get a lot right if you are to win a tournament.

„As a player, I was fortunate to be able to learn from good coaches. Marcello Lippi, Giovanni Trapattoni, Arrigo Sacchi, Carlo Ancelotti ... so it is certainly worth making a few calls.“

You are about to go into your first major tournament as a national team coach. How much can you take from your experience of tournaments as a player? Of course you learn something from every experience. I was part of the national team for six years, in which time we reached the final of a major tournament twice (Ed. 1994 World But I will certainly ask for some advice from one or two coaches before the European Championship. Which coaches do you have in mind? As a player, I was fortunate to be able to learn from good coaches. EXTRAORDINARY FIFA CONGRESS 2016 On 26 February, the reforms will be voted on and a new President elected at the Hallenstadion in Zurich. Below are the key questions and answers about the event. By Sarah Steiner

aim to foster a positive image of FIFA and to ensure that FIFA’s mission, strategic direction, policies and values, as defined by the Council, are protected and advanced. The President has one ordinary vote on the Council. What is the role of the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee and what are its duties? The Ad-hoc Electoral Committee supervises the electoral process for the office of FIFA President. It checks whether candidates fulfil the eligibility criteria and monitors the candidates’ campaigns, i.e. it ensures that they are conducted in a fair and reputable manner and, more generally, in a spirit of respect for the FIFA Statutes and FIFA’s regulations. The duties of the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee are defined in art. 8 of the Electoral Regulations for the FIFA Presidency. Which candidates were approved by the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee? Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Shk. Salman Bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, Jérôme Champagne, Gianni Infantino, Tokyo Sexwale. SPOTLIGHT ON NEW FACES

An eye to the future Many players hope to be discovered at the African Nations Championship.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) is being held in Rwanda from 16 January to 7 February and features only footballers who play in their national leagues. By Sarah Steiner.

In the Rwandan genocide a little over 20 years ago, an estimated one million people were killed in a 100-day period in 1994 – one of the 20 th century’s major atrocities. A new generation now lives in this landlocked African country, where the majority of those under 19 only know what happened from what they read and hear, yet the memory is ever-present. But a new Rwanda is emerging, a land that has gained a worldwide reputation for peace and reconciliation. Football has played its part in this. Alongside the many projects to encourage children and young people to play the beautiful game, the national team is also bringing a message of peace and hope to the Rwandan people. The country will also be given a further boost by staging the African Nations Championship (CHAN) from 16 January to 7 February. Although Rwanda by no means belongs to Africa’s football elite, the Wasps (as the national team are known) have improved in leaps and

AFRICA

„FOOTBALL IS A RELIGION IN AFRICA“ For the past six months, the fate of Nigerian football has been in the hands of its national team coach Sunday Oliseh, who, as a player for Nigeria, won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 and a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He spoke to Sarah Steiner about the African Nations Championship, African football and his team.

How important is the African Nations Championship to you and how are your preparations going? Sunday Oliseh: I’ve never taken part in this tournament, but it’s clearly a big one. We have prepared ourselves well and beaten a South African Premier Division team, Tuks, 3-0 at our training camp in South Africa. We only managed a 1-1 draw against Angola but then beat Côte d’Ivoire 1-0. Our goal is now to get the best out of each other and try to progress as far as possible. The mood in the squad is good, and we are pumped up. You can only choose players who play in the Nigerian league, so some key players will be missing. How will you cope with that? You could see that as a negative thing, but it’s also a good opportunity to have a look at other players – to see how they’ve developed and where they can improve. To just observe them, really, and who knows, we may uncover one or two future members of the national team proper. Many of them have already played in the second round qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. We got through to the third round by beating Swaziland. But you don’t know most of the team, is that right? That is true, it’s another set of players altogether. I’ll have to make some adjustments, including on the coaching side. We have put a lot of work in on the training ground, and some extra sessions were needed for those who don’t know me so well.

It is a good idea. These days, nearly all of the players in the African national teams no longer play in the country where they grew up, so it’s a great opportunity for those who play in the domestic league to show what they can do. There are bound to be some scouts in the stands having a close look at the talent on show, even if that leads to certain

THE ROAD TO RUSSIA African football wants to make a statement, but not only in continental tournaments. It is high time that one of its nations triumphed on the global stage: will Russia 2018 prove to be that historic occasion? The tournament qualifiers are in full swing, with 20 African teams still in the running after the second round of matches. These will be divided into five groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches between October 2016 and November 2017, with the five group winners qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. THE 1938 WORLD CUP IN FRANCE Europe was in turmoil with dictators on the march and borders far from secure when the third World Cup kicked off in France. The tournament was also marked by political developments, as, following the Anschluss, some of the players from qualified Austria joined a „Greater German” team, which, however, failed to get off to winning ways due to the different formations deployed by coach Sepp Herberger, falling to Switzerland in the first round. Defending champions Italy provocatively wore black shirts in honour of fascism in their quarter-final against France, and their superior play saw them through to the semi-final, where they met Brazil, the only South American team left, whose legendary victories over Poland and Czechoslovakia had seen them through to the last four. Without their injured star striker Leônidas da Silva, however, the Seleção succumbed to Italy, although they did manage to beat Sweden to secure third place. The final, which was played out in Paris in front of 55,000 fans, saw Italy take on the skilful and attacking Hungarians, who missed their best chances and were made to pay for it by the more assured „Azzurri“, who eventually won 4-2 and thus successfully defended their title. WINNING IN YOUR SLEEP Eyes on the prize Bayern Munich’s Franz Roth struggles to drop off in such exclusive company.

Professional clubs plan everything right down to the finest detail, but they often forget to look at their players‘ sleep routines. Sleep coach Nick Littlehales wants to change all that. By Annette Braun. It is fair to say that Wayne Rooney is a fan of vacuum cleaners as the roaring sound helps the Manchester United star to switch off at the end of a long day. Whereas others may grit their teeth and pray for the noise to stop, Rooney sits back and – as hard as it may be to believe – relaxes. In his autobiography, England’s record goalscorer admitted that it is not the dulcet tones of Mozart or Chopin that help him drift off to sleep, but rather the white noise of a vacuum cleaner. But after his wife Coleen stepped in and banned vacuum cleaners from the Rooney bedroom, the Manchester United man had to make do with his wife’s hairdryers which, one by one, he eventually ruined by letting them burn out. Is deafening noise really part of the perfect sleep routine to wind down at the end of the day? For Rooney, it is actually the secret of his success.

Sleep is a vital part of a footballer’s preparations for a training session or a match the next day. Sleep is part of everyone’s day. Where, how, when, why – little to no thought is ever given to any of these questions, whether it is in high-level sport or not. After all, sleep will always come … won’t it? Eventually, somehow … even if – assuming you are like Rooney – you need a little extra help from the droning noise of a vacuum cleaner. Yet healthy sleep actually has a major role to play in keeping you healthy, and as such it is a vital part of any footballer’s preparations for a match the next day. A player will always take to the pitch

HEALTH to a 25% drop in the body’s ability to perform. Periods of rest therefore play a major role in the body’s regeneration. But while little is left to chance in a player’s daily routine in terms of training, nutrition and medical care, clubs still pay very little attention to the importance of sleep in their plans.

SLEEP ANALYSIS BY A SLEEP COACH If you ask Englishman Nick Littlehales, sleep is neglected because clubs are most interested in winning, and not in long-term development, and also because very few coaches now enjoy extended stays at clubs in the modern game. If a coach leaves a club, then often his entire team of support staff leaves with him, which brings all of the coach’s projects to an end too. The club is then deprived of the continuity that would enable it to conduct sleep analyses. Regeneration in the air Michael Essien (left) catches up on some sleep while John Obi Mikel relaxes with some music.

If there is one man who knows what he is talking about, then it is Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with many leading clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real

It is a totally different story in the evening though, which is why a late penalty shoot-out would fit Bale’s rhythm perfectly. So can sleep really be the difference between victory and defeat? „Yes,“ says Littlehales emphatically. Sleep can help to prevent injuries and ensure that a coach can field his strongest team – and win the big games. Sleep can also lead to a major rescue operation though, as it recently did at Barnsley FC in England, where a shoeless fan fell asleep on a stadium toilet. A DAY IN THE LIFE...

KEEPER OF THE TROPHIES The eyes of the football world are on Zurich. The big day has arrived, the day on which the player of the year will be named. Who will it be this time? It’s a big day – not just for the stars, but also for FIFA employee Reto Thurnherr, who has been working towards this day for months. Today, the 41-year-old and his team will be responsible for the trophies, and he is up bright and early to tackle whatever this cold, wintery day in Zurich may have in store for him. „Even though I’ve been doing this for many years now, it’s always something special,“ he smiles. His first port of call is the Home of FIFA, where the prestigious trophies are stored. Reto and the Event Management team are responsible for ordering the trophies and for making sure that they are engraved correctly. Reto picks up the trophies and makes a final check to ensure that there are no typos in the winners’ names or any other

CELEBRATION

BRANDI CHASTAIN Brandi Chastain has never been one to suffer from self-doubt. As a young girl, she defied all conventions by turning up for school every day with a football tucked safely under her arm. That strength of character was probably why – many years later – she stepped up to meet one particularly tricky challenge head-on. The day in question is 10 July 1999, and the USA are in the Women’s World Cup final against China PR. 120 goalless minutes have gone by, and the Americans are on the cusp of winning the penalty shoot-out with the score tied at 4-4. Chastain places the ball on the spot, takes seven steps back and brushes her hair away from her face. 90,185 fans are packed into the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena. What goes through the head of a player at moments like these? Chastain would later say that everything just happened spontaneously. And then the shot: firm and true and into the right side of the net, unstoppable for China’s goalkeeper Gao Hong. This image, taken two seconds after the ball had hit the back of the net, depicts the incredible moment when the USA’s dream of winning their second World Cup title in nine years came true. But it also shows something that was, at that time, unthinkable: a footballer on her knees, shirtless, wearing a new style of sports bra, clenching her fists and screaming in celebration. The photo certainly created a stir as Time, Newsweek, People and Sports Illustrated all ran with it on their front covers. As for Chastain, she went on to sign a lucrative advertising deal with a sporting goods manufacturer, and her bra became part of an exhibition in New York’s Sports Museum of America. USA coach Tony DiCicco also has his own story to tell about that iconic moment. He knew that the Chinese had been watching his team’s training sessions ahead of the final, so before the shoot-out started he turned to Chastain, who was just as comfortable with her left foot as with her right, and said: „If you take a penalty, use your left foot”. Chastain had only ever taken penalties with her right foot before. Nerves of steel ... Alan Schweingruber
