MEET FIGJAM’S NEW FASHION EDITOR

EMELIE STENMAN

FIGJAM is delighted to welcome our new Fashion Editor, Emelie to the team. Emelie brings years of experience as a very successfull fashion model, but also as a succesfull blogger and influencer. The overnight success of FIGJAM, and the amount of readership we have achieved in our relative short lifespan so far, have given us even more inspiration to make it an even better magazine. Emelie was previously a part of the ‘The Model Diaries’ blog which achieved great success on social media. We be-leive the idea of getting Emelie onboard will help us get even better. Emelie was previosuly part of the ‘Model’s Diary’ team, which acheived great success and many followers online and on social media. Emelie brings a wealth of experience from her days as fashion model, she have been involved in the fashion industry for over a decade, as well as having got herself a university degree in marketing and is a fantastic writer. We aim to utilise her experience to the best of our ability. As you might have noticed already in this issue, we are

actually bringing an article about the changes in the fashion industry. .In future FIGJAM issues, we aim to bring more inter-esting content from the world of fashion and beauty. As fashion editor, that will of course be one of Emelie’s most important responsibilities, naturally along side picking which editorials to feature on our pages, going to fashion events, shows and running the social media etc etc. She is already in full swing at the magazine and we are super excited about the long term prospects for Emelie as FIGJAM fashion editor.. If you can any questions, or any suggestions for Emelie, her email is: Emelie@figjammagazine.com She is also open to suggestions from our readers if there is anything you would like to see in FIGJAM. FIGJAM MAGAZINE VOL.4

How Is The Sustainability Movement Impacting On The Fashion Industry? The fashion industry is currently the second largest polluting industry right after the oil industry and the production of clothing has almost doubled in the last 15 years according to reseach by the ‘Ellen MacArthur Foundation’. Our constant desire to renew our wardrobe and keep up to date with the latest catwalk trends has caused the so called fast-fashion industry to sky-rocket in recent years and the figures showing the impact to the environment by the industry is pretty bleak. It has been reported that in order to produce one single cotton T-shirt 2,700 litres of water is used which is the equivalent of three years worth of drinking water. The fashion industry is also responsible for causing 10% of carbon emissions globally due to the long production processes, manufacturing, shipping and retail activities that are required to deliver the latest trends to us as consumers.

quite yet willing to pay a higher price tag for sustainability. In the era of social media, the pressure of keeping up to date with the latest trends has many people feeling the pressure to be regularly seen in a new outfit or piece of clothing when posting on social media platforms such as Instagram. This has propelled the current throw-away culture even more so with many simply using some pieces of clothing just once before they are thrown-away. Coming up to the festive season many of us have Christmas parties to attend and British shoppers spent about £3.5bn on Christmas party clothing last year. Unfortunately many of those sparkly items will be on their way to landfill after just one wear.

So what is the solution to our endless thirst for having a new outfit? Rental Fashion may hold the answer. The rise of the so called rental fashion business has become more and more popular amongst sustainability aware consumers. Although rental fashion isn’t a new phe-noOur thirst to wear the very latest runway trends almost menon an increase in environmental concerns has made immediately after they have been showcased has caused hiring clothes more popular than ever. The value of the fast fashion industry to boom in recent years unused clothing in our wardrobes has been estimated offering consumers the latest trends for a fraction of the at £30 billion with an whopping £140 million of clothing price of the catwalk looks they are replicating. going to landfill annually in the UK alone. Could this be the answer to our thirst for trendy fashion pieces? This has caused the waste attached to the textile and fashion industry to

“The value of un-used clothing in our wardrobes is estimated a £30 billions”

sky-rocket putting the fashion industry at the forefront of the worst polluting industries worldwide. We now buy approximately 40% of all our clothing from so called value retailers using only 17% of our total clothing budget which has resulted in more cheap garments being shipped from east Asia than ever before according to recent statistics. Although figures indicating our consumption of fast-fashion are pretty bleak, a movement of sustainable fashion is starting to take real hold of the industry and there are some promising changes starting to happen brought on by leaders within the industry. High-street retailers such as Mango are launching sustainable collections and Zalado are promising to cut their carbon dioxide emissions and eliminate single use plastics. Other big brands in-cluding Nike and Adidas are also working on finding better and more sustainable ways to use dye, integrating waterless dye technologies into their product lines. A recent survey commissioned by Nosto revealed that over half (52%) of consumers in the UK and US want the fashion industry to become more sustainable, with calls for reduced packaging and fair pay for workers among their top demands. Although these figures are promising, the survey also revealed that consumers are not

A recent survey conducted by the Westfield Shopping

centre in London has indicated that clothing rental is on path to become a strong future trend and the clothing rental market has been estimated to have a potential of £923m in the UK market alone. The US based company Rent the Runway has an estimated customer base over 6 million and with an impressive figure of $100 million in revenue. One of the appeals with the rental fashion industry is that it enables people to be a little bit more experimental with their fashion choices and allow consumers to try new designer brands they may not have discovered otherwise. It also allows the consumer to wear brands that would normally be out of their budget, especially if it is an outfit that is only going to be worn once or twice. This radical approach to how we think and consume fashion has got some real traction the last few years and sharing our wardrobes makes sense in order to reduce our textile waste for the planet’s sake but how does it work? Just like Airbnb which is built on listing your property for others to rent, you do the same with your clothes. Although we as a society have a long way to go to tackle the current unsustainable way we produce and consume fashion, forward thinking and innovative ways of changing the way we think about fashion will have to become the norm in order to save our planet.
