There’s a Party and You’re Invited!!!
July 29 - 31, 2011 Centennial Homecoming Weekend
Athabasca has a rich and important history. Starting in the late 1800s, the Athabasca Landing held an important post as the “Gateway to the North”, providing economic avenues for traders heading north on the Athabasca River to the Arctic and by 1900 the area was a key centre allowing the Hudson Bay Company and other traders to access Canada’s northwest and the Arctic. The community has grown from a wonderful mix of settlers – from the First Nations people that have lived in the area for hundreds of years, to the Métis, British and French from Eastern Canada, Western and Eastern Europeans and Americans. In 1911, the Athabasca Landing was incorporated into a town and in 1913 the name was changed to Athabasca. The community has continued to welcome new citizens and plays an important economic role in industries including agriculture, hunting, trapping, fishing and forestry. For most residents, home is thought of fondly with scenic views of rolling hills and the winding river, community involvement and a strong sense of pride for our history and excitement for our future.
The Athabasca Heritage Society is beginning to renovate the 99 yearold CNR Class 1 depot to its original look and feel

ATHABASCA COUNTRY
TOWN OF ATHABASCA
G Population – The Athabasca region has been experiencing growth attributed to industrial development over the last several years. It has also become a housing hotbed, attracting workers from Alberta’s Energy Corridor as an alternative to city living, and an opportunity to choose country and lakefront living. According to the 2008 Census, 10,321 people live within Athabasca County’s 6,126km2. G Geography – A mix of boreal and flatland, the Athabasca Region has its history shaped by the influence of the Athabasca River. From the south, near Nestow, the watershed direction of flow changes from south to north. This means that water from the North Saskatchewan River flows east to the Atlantic Ocean and water from the Athabasca River flows north to the Arctic Ocean. The 55th parallel runs in between Grassland and Wandering River. G Weather & Daylight – The region receives an annual average precipitation of 382mm of rain and 122cm of snow per annum. On the June solstice, the region receives 17hrs and 23 minutes of daylight compared to the December solstice which only receives 7hrs and 18 minutes of daylight. G Industry – As diverse as the people who call this region home, the Athabasca Country is home to forestry, agriculture, oil and gas development. Major employers include Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries, Millar Western Forest Products, Athabasca University and numerous oil and gas service companies. ATHABASKA DICK By Robert Service
When the boys come out from Lac Labiche in the lure of the early Spring, To take the pay of the "Hudson's Bay," as their fathers did before, They are all a-glee for the jamboree, and they make the Landing ring With a whoop and a whirl, and a "Grab your girl", and a rip and a skip and a roar. And here they must make the long portage, and the boys sweat in the sun; And they heft and pack, and they haul and track, and each must do his trick; But their thoughts are far in the Landing bar, where the founts of nectar run: And no man thinks of such gorgeous Drinks as that Athabaska Dick. Athabasca Country 2011-2012 Visitor’s Guide
BUSINESS, SHOPPING & NOVELTY Athabasca Country is steeped in the rich history of the pioneer, prospector and fur trader, and that entrepreneur spirit is more alive today then ever. Whether it’s specialty items, downtown storefronts or micro businesses selling their wares at the many markets throughout the season, visitors are sure to find that special item that is distinctly “Athabasca Country”. More than just souvenirs, each treasure discovered will stand as a reminder of your visit to our remarkable array of artisans and craftsmen. Visit athabascacountry.com events page for a full listing of craft shows and farmers markets throughout the year in the entire region. Come join us for Moonlight Madness the last Friday in November for a community celebration featuring a Santa Claus Parade, fireworks, contests and late night shopping. Hosted by the Athabasca Chamber of Commerce. Check out the Athabasca Country Tourism Event page for complete details at athabascacountry.com.
