www.LacLaBicheCounty.com

Welcome to

Lac La Biche County With more than 100 lakes and over 1,300 beach-side campsites and cabins offering white sand beaches, Lac La Biche County is a host to many recreational activities. You can hit the waves for some fast-paced water sports, walk or bike over 22 kilometres of paved-trails, tour the backcountry trails by cross-country skiing, bike, or ATV, or just kick back and relax for an evening around a warm campfire. Annually, visitors come to our pristine surroundings for camping, boating, waterskiing, fishing, hiking, bird watching, and many other outdoor activities. We are a community that takes pride in our cultural diversity, celebrating it through various activities and events throughout the year with several rodeos, pow wows, and community gatherings. For those who are looking for an adrenaline-rush, we have open events for individuals to register in such as the Winter Festival of Speed hosting on-ice car, sled, and ATV races, and in summer Plamondon hosts their annual Mud Bog competition where the tires spin and the mud flies. Whether you are looking to actively take part in our events or be a spectator, come and experience the Lac La Biche region and feel welcomed by nature.

Let us float a question your way ‌ Where else are you going to find over 100 lakes in one region for all your boating needs? Within a 50 kilometre radius of Lac La Biche, outdoor enthusiasts can find over 100 bodies of water perfect for a secluded float under the summer sun, a canoe trip into the back country, a kayak race around a series of remote islands, a family fishing trip, or wide open waters with enough space to bounce even the most 'glued-in' passenger from the tube your boat is pulling.

www.LacLaBicheRegion.com

The waters of Beaver Lake and Lac La Biche lake are often churning most summer days with water-ski boats, pontoon-boat travelers and fishermen looking for that hidden underwater ledge or weed bed. In recent years the sights of tall sailboats can be seen on the waters, reviving the popular annual Desperado Sailboat Race held each August long weekend. With so many large lakes in the region there is enough room for those looking to zip around while still offering quieter areas for those looking to float along with the waves and just enjoy the scenery.

This is a guaranteed adventure that will take you into a unique area of the Lakeland Provincial Park, Alberta’s only backcountry canoe circuit. Just make sure not to forget the essentials, because for the next few days of approximately 38 kilometres of paddling, it’s only you and Mother Nature. These paddle-happy days will take you across several pristine lakes where the days start with the call of a loon and end with the flapping wings and splashing feet of a pod of pelicans landing on the water for a night’s rest. The Lakeland backcountry is home to several outdoor activities as the Lakeland Provincial Park boasts over 45 kilometres of trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. With more than 30 backcountry campsites it is easy to plan a true outdoor adventure full of wildlifeviewing and photo opportunities. If you’re looking for some motorized fun, the Lakeland Recreation area has over 140 kilometres of shared trails for motorized ATVs and snowmobiles. Many of these trails have been upgraded so that ATV use does not degrade the trails and the landscape. By staying on designated trails and practicing responsible operation of ATVs, you will help to ensure that Lakeland remains a great place to visit. Maps are available of the Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area at many local tourism offices to help plan your escape into the wild.

Hooked on Fishing

Whether you are looking to cast your line on a big lake with lots of your friends or fish on a calm waterway off the beaten path, our region can fulfill an angler’s dream. Your fishing stories of snagging a big jackfish, luring a humpback perch, or catching a keepersized walleye are sure to be the envy of your friends. Grab a fishing guide for catch limit information, and shop locally for great deals on tackle and bait. You might also get a few ‘local secrets’ about good fishing holes from local merchants. Now you’re ready to catch our waves.

Regional Events Rain or shine, hot or cold, it seems like there is always something going on in the Lac La Biche Region. Every season of the year there is an event to celebrate, bringing the communities of the region together and welcoming all visitors.

To beat the winter chills, visitors can take part in hay rides, fun ice fishing tournaments, cross-country skiing in the afternoons, and community hockey games that take over rinks carved on our lakes. There are several curling bonspiels and hockey tournaments for teams to register and compete in every year. With the warmer months, residents and visitors alike partake in several summer events in the region including various rodeos, pow wows, and Plamondon’s annual Mud Bog competition. The firework display at the 50th annual Lac La Biche Pow Wow is sure to be memorable as the show is not only in the sky, but also reflected back onto the lake. If you’re looking to see traditional Aboriginal dancing, the Heart Lake and Beaver Lake Pow Wows are two events that proudly showcase the culture, talent, and native artwork that go into the extravagant costumes. The annual rodeos in Lac La Biche, Kikino, and Buffalo Lake invite professional riders and ropers to compete providing great entertainment for all fans. Buffalo Lake and Kikino also host Pony Chariot and Chuckwagon races the same weekend as their rodeos. And just remember, you’re always welcome to get dirty at the Plamondon Mud Bog, where getting a little muddy is only a small part of all the activities going on there that weekend. Lakeland 55+ Summer Games The Alberta 55 Plus Games offer the ideal test for mind, muscle, body, and spirit. The provincial-wide games are held every second year, but every other year the regional zones hold their own mini-games. Like-minded individuals will be coming together from Zone 7 as Lac La Biche hosts the mini-games from August 14-16, 2012.

This event showcases the true building of community, where individuals can compete in golf, baseball, floor curling, cribbage, arts and crafts, and many other activities. But most importantly they come to socialize and have an enjoyable time. The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks & Wildlife Foundation challenges you to experience the fun and competition that will be happening; maybe to try something new or rekindle an old interest. Take up the challenge, and become active and involved in your zone.

Step Back

in Time

From Joe Plamondon, Father Lacombe and 18th Century Welsh Explorer David Thompson, the Lac La Biche Region has a history of discovery. It is easy to take a step back in time and see first-hand what life was like a century ago. For a glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants, visitors can visit Portage College’s Museum of Aboriginal Art and Artifacts and see how old traditions are being carried forward with the Native Arts and Culture Program offered at the post secondary institution. For other opportunities to see the culture in action, be sure to attend one of the summer Pow Wows held annually at Beaver Lake or Heart Lake First Nations. This year, marks the 50th anniversary of Lac La Biche's summer celebration Pow Wow Days and the 2nd annual week-long Metis Celebration in November. The Lac La Biche Mission (Notre Dame des Victoires), a provincial and national historic site, was the home of Western Canada's first printing press and first production wheat field. Book a guided tour, May – September, and follow the guides into the past as they reinterpret historic events. The Alkareem Mosque in Lac La Biche is Canada's second, and North America's third, mosque. It was built in 1958 to serve the local and visiting Arab community. Largely of Lebanese origin, the Muslim faith in the region has roots dating back to the early 1900s. The Mosque is open 24 hours a day for prayers and offers tours for the public. www.LacLaBicheRegion.com

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise The magnificent landscapes of the region create a prime habitat for a spectacular variety of birds offering the best of bird watching opportunities. Here, you can observe many sought-after resident species, neo-tropical migrants, as well as other species stopping over on their seasonal migrations. Renowned for bird watching, the park is located on an island accessible via a 2.5 km causeway and provides many lookout points, 7 kilometres of walking trails throughout the island, and a viewing scope for birding. The boreal forest is the breeding ground for neo-tropical migrants - that is, birds that spend the winter in South America. Since these species are most watchable when displaying their mating behaviour, bird watchers will not be disappointed by the vibrant plumage and the numerous bird calls. One attraction of potential national significance is the hundreds of loons which can be observed on Touchwood Lake in late summer. Annual counts are held in May and December, you can join the counting in Lac La Biche, and find out how many of the species you can see and name. The Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club features natural rolling terrain complete with scenic views of the lake. It contains enough sand traps and water hazards to keep even the most experienced golfer on his or her toes. The course is well guarded by trees and bunkers; you will need to use accurate tee shots, as every hole is a challenge with doglegs and blind shots to the greens. With the relaxed atmosphere on the course it is the perfect place for the golf novice, but still offers a great challenge for more experienced players. The well appointed pro shop is a great place to stock up on the latest golf gear and book your cart and club rentals. Golf lessons are also available through our resident golf professional. Be sure to save some time afterwards to grab a delicious snack or meal and cool beverage from the licensed restaurant after your round. Afterwards, you can sit out on the clubhouse deck and recap you great day as you gaze out at one of the most spectacular vistas in Northern Alberta. Out-of-town golfers are encouraged to participate in the weekly men’s and women’s night activities. Play’n’Stay packages are available through the Ramada Hotel, BCMInns, the La Biche Inn, and Parkland Hotels. To book a tee time call 780-623-4288 or scan the QR-Code to access the mobile site.

The Aboriginal Artifacts collection is housed at the Portage College campus, established in 1968. The College is situated in the beautiful County of Lac La Biche, Alberta which offers the chance to explore some of western Canada’s oldest history. Playing in a Winter Wonderland Summer isn’t the only season in the Lac La Biche Region that offers a time for recreation enthusiasts. There’s just as much fun to be had by playing on our lakes in the winter as summer. Activities in our winter months take the chill out of the cold season’s air. For those who love to fish year-round, there are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing; a line, a few hooks and some bait are all you need to catch a keeper! For the land-lovers, the snow covered trails of the Shaw Lake Cross Country Ski circuit offers miles of natural beauty. If a little more speed is to your liking, the area’s lakes and back country trails of Lakeland Recreation Area have snowmobile trails for every type of rider. The winter months also include several community events like Christmas gatherings, curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, and the popular Winter Festival of Speed, which takes place in early March. During the festival, the Lac La Biche Kinsmen host the On The Pond Minor Hockey Tournament with eight rinks cleared on the lake for games.
