HISTORIC ATHABASCA LANDING /PEACE RIVER TRAIL

Welcome! Dotted with dozens of picturesque lakes and threaded by the mighty Athabasca River, set against the backdrop of lush boreal forests, the Athabasca-Boyle region offers scenic natural vistas and unique recreation opportunities, all less than 90 minutes’ drive north of Edmonton.

Our Communities:

The Athabasca-Boyle region has experienced an upward trend in growth over the past several years. Much of this growth can be attributed to industrial development, both within the region and beyond, as many families are choosing our small communities, lakefront and rural living as an alternative to the big city lifestyle. According to the 2011 Census, over 11,500 people live in the Athabasca-Boyle region.

Athabasca – Population 2990. The primary service centre of our region, Athabasca was founded as a Hudson’s Bay Company depot and built by entrepreneurs and homesteaders. Today, Athabasca thrives on history, music, arts, culture and recreation.

Geography: River valleys are among the most striking features of the AthabascaBoyle region, highlighted by the majestic Athabasca River, which enters the region near the hamlet of Smith, and winds its way south to the Town of Athabasca before turning north towards Fort McMurray and Lake Athabasca. Also shaping our landscape is the Tawatinaw River valley, which parallels Highway 2 between Athabasca and Clyde; and the Muskeg Creek valley, which runs north-south on the west side of the Town of Athabasca.

Boyle – Population 916. Located at the south end of the Alberta Energy Corridor (Highway 63), Boyle offers a comfortable small-town lifestyle with amenities that include recreational facilities, motel lodging, rodeo grounds and vibrant commercial district and more. Camping, boating fishing and golf are located just minutes away. Colinton — Population 215. Located in the heart of the picturesque Tawatinaw River valley and a key stopping point on the former Athabasca Landing Trail, Colinton features the region’s only bowling alley, and the famous Colinton Hotel steak night every Thursday throughout the summer, which regularly draws visitors from over a hour’s drive away. Grassland — Population 94. The halfway point on Highway 63 between Edmonton and Fort McMurray, and a key service centre for the nearby Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries pulp mill, Grassland offers a variety of services for the traveling public. It’s modern Community Centre plays host a variety of events including sportsmens shows, quad rallies and grass drags. Rochester — Population 101. Near the headwaters of the meandering Tawatinaw River lies this active, vibrant community. Local volunteers maintain a convenient roadside campground along the nearby Highway 2, and the community comes alive each August for the annual Rochester & District Ag Society Fair, which features an amazingly creative small-town parade.

Lakefront living is popular with both residents and visitors to the Athabasca-Boyle region. Whether boating, fishing, camping or just listening as the water quietly laps the shoreline, there are dozens of locations to enjoy life on the water. Among the more popular water bodies in the region are Baptiste Lake and Island Lake (both located west of Athabasca), Skeleton and Amisk Lake (east of Boyle), Calling Lake (60 km north of Athabasca), Long Lake/Narrow Lake (southwest of Athabasca off Highway 663) and Long Lake (south of Boyle in the County of Thorhild).

Climate: The Athabasca-Boyle Region averages 382 mm of rain and 122 cm of snow per year. Average temperatures range from 16 C at the height of summer to -15 C in January. The region’s latitude provides almost 17.5 hours of daylight at the summer solstice, and just over seven hours in December.

Wandering River — Population 71. One of the fastest-growing communities in the Alberta Energy Corridor, Wandering River represents the last stop on Highway 63 on your way north to Fort McMurray. A great rest stop for motorists, Wandering River offers camping, hotel accommodations and the scenic yet challenging nine-hole Riverside Golf Course. Smith-Hondo — Population 218. In the northwest corner of our region, within the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River, lies the twin hamlets of Smith and Hondo. The communities’ Fall Fair on the Labour Day weekend offer animal exhibits and exciting pony chuck and chariot races. Smith is also a popular launch point for canoe and raft expeditions down the Athabasca River to the Town of Athabasca, or beyond to Poacher’s Landing near Grassland. Calling Lake — Population 189. Located approximately 60 km north of Athabasca, Calling Lake lies within the M.D. of Opportunity and is part of the Bigstone Cree Nation. Popular with cottagers, Calling Lake has a beautiful forest campground and offers some of the best fishing in the region. 2013-2014 Athabasca, Boyle & District Visitor’s Guide

First settled in the late 1800’s, Athabasca grew quickly to become a thriving community. Originally an important Hudson’s Bay Company outpost that linked the Athabasca Landing Trail to Edmonton with the Athabasca River routes to both Fort Chipewyan and the Peace Country, Athabasca grew to prominence on the strength of brave entrepreneurs seeking to capitalize on the fur trade, European immigrants who established homesteads in the region, and Métis and First Nations people who formed the early labour force. Today, Athabasca continues to flourish as one of Alberta’s most vibrant and picturesque communities in which to live play and work, with the Athabasca River serving as a constant reminder of our history and heritage.

Athabasca Royal Canadian Legion

The mission of the Royal Canadian Legion is to serve veterans and their dependants, promote remembrance and act in the service of Canada and its communities. The future of our Legion depends on you. Because of the declining number of veterans and the aging of our current membership, we are appealing to the community to help us revive our organization. If you agree with our ideals, aims, and objectives, this may be the perfect organization for you to join. However, membership alone is not enough to help us carry on. Our strength comes from numbers, and many hands make light work. Each Saturday afternoon, we have a meat draw where members, their guests, and anybody who wants to attend gather for some social fun and the chance to win one of about 18 meat draws. This is the main fundraiser for our Ways and Means portfolio. Currently, the Legion is running Beat the Deck, which involves a deck of cards and the chance to pick the one card that will win you a huge jackpot. The lucky winner gets half! This has proven to be a wonderful fundraising opportunity for us and we have raised over $50,000 so far. The bulk of this money goes into the community. The groups we have given money to include Minor Hockey, Flips Gymnastics, Figure Skating,

Girl Guides, Ukrainian Dancers, Words Work, Dance Society, Rapids Swim Club, the High School Football Team, Karate, Marine Biology, Scouts, Playschool and the Native Friendship Centre. Last year we were able to give back approximately $25,000. We do want to stress emphatically that you do not have to be a Legion member to come in, have a beverage, and make use of the sporting equipment. We have darts, shuffleboard, pool, semi-big screen TV, cards, and Wednesday night Legion golf. This is all at the local branch, and we also have district and area sporting events

where participants can advance all the way to the national level. Our lower level facilities are also available for rent for weddings, anniversaries, meetings, and any special occasion. The rental comes with a full kitchen and a bar can be provided with or without a bartender. The Legion is open Wednesday to Friday 4:00 p.m. to close and Saturday 2:00 p.m. to close. We are located at 4801 48 Street, across from the Brick School. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. At the Legion, every hour is happy hour as we are able to keep the price of beverages quite reasonable. We can always use volunteers because the Legion supports the arts, sports, the entire community and provides bursaries and scholarships to students. There is also the annual Poppy Fund Drive, where all proceeds go to veterans and their dependants. The Legion wants you to be a part of it all. Help us continue to keep up the good works of the Legion and promote awareness of the sacrifices of those who came before us. Lest We Forget.

Magnificent River Rats Festival

Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic

Known as the largest rural Canada Day festival in Western Canada, the 2013 Magnificent River Rats Festival goes June 29-30. Centred at the Riverfront Stage in downtown Athabasca, the festival include live music, children’s activities, a parade, a vintage vehicle show-and-shine, fireworks and craft tables. Boyle native and TSN commentator Bryan Mudryk returns home every summer to host a fundraising golf tournament and dinner in support of the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) in Edmonton. Over its 10-year history, it has grown to become one of the largest annual CCI fundraisers in the province, and looks to break the $1 million mark in all-time funds raised this year. Harvest Gold Old-Time Fiddlers Weekend Held every Labour Day weekend at the Athabasca Regional Multiplex, the Harvest Gold Old-Time Fiddlers weekend is one of the most popular fiddle events in Alberta. A fiddle dance, jamboree and judged fiddle competitions for all age categories are all part of the weekend.

Hawg Flatts Pig Roast & Bike Rally The 14th annual Hawg Flatts Pig Roast & Bike Rally goes July 12-14, 2013. Popular with motorbike enthusiasts from across north-central Alberta, the weekend event includes bike rodeos, beer gardens, live bands and other activities, with camping, showers and firewood provided at the rally site, located 38 km west of Athabasca on Highway 2. Rochester Fair

Billy Loutit Despatch

The annual Rochester Fair is always a popular event. Held Aug. 9-11, includes a pancake breakfast; one of the best parades in the entire region; craft vendor exhibits; heritage displays; wagon train tours of the townsite; displays of vintage vehicles and farm machinery; beer gardens; a supper featuring local musical entertainment; cowboy church; old-time livestock exhibitions; a quilt show;; ball games, a bench show and a heavy horse pull.

Named for a Métis mailrunner who, in 1904, ran to Edmonton in 16 hours with an important message (despatch) about flooding in Athabasca, the Billy Loutit Despatch is now a popular summer triathlon, to be held this year July 20-21. Standard and sprint version of the triathlon are held, along with the popular Kids of Steel event for children aged 7-14. Visit billyloutit. ca for more information.

Grassland Mud Bogs ATV use is wildly popular in the Athabasca-Boyle region, and folks in the Grassland area always find unique ways to add some fun and competition to it. Past years have seen snowmobile grass drags, quad rodeos and ATV pulls, and this year’s event, to take place sometime in August, is set to feature mud bogging. Boyle Rodeo & Boyle Wildberry Festival The Boyle Ag Society presents its annual rodeo July 20-21. With a full lineup of rodeo events each day and live entertainment, it’s an event not to miss. The Boyle Betterment Committee hosts the third annual Boyle Wildberry Festival in mid-August (exact dates TBA). In the Athabasca-Boyle region, we love to play outside. It’s no wonder, with lush boreal forests, picturesque lakes and rivers, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities at our doorstep.

Fishing

Peace River Trail

Recreational fishing is available on most lakes and rivers in the AthabascaBoyle region. See the fishing guide on page 23 for more information. Obtain the official Alberta Fishing Guide for full rules and regulations. Visit www.reelangling.com for information on guided fishing trips throughout the region.

From a trailhead just north of Athabasca off Highway 813, 60.2 km of trails link to Smith. Open to ATVs and snowmobiles, there are camping areas, toilet facilities and necessary signage along the way. Watch for some steep sections. Trail bridges are 8 feet wide.

Boating Boat launches are available at most lakes in the region, as well as at various points along the Athabasca River. For a special experience, Grand Rapids Wilderness Adventures offers guided excursions along the Athabasca River, all the way to the historic Grand Rapids. Muskeg Creek Trails A well-maintained 17.5 km trail system criss-crosses the Muskeg Creek valley on the west side of the town of Athabasca. Perfect for walking and biking in the summer months, and groomed for cross-country skiing in the winter. Link from the trails to the Athabasca riverfront via the paved Rotary Way trail, or to the Athabasca University campus. A 1.2 km loop is lit for evening use. No motorized vehicles permitted. Athabasca Landing Trail Following the historic route first mapped out as a Hudson’s Bay Company trade corridor, the trail’s most popular section is 32 km between Athabasca and Perryvale along the Tawatinaw River. Further sections are being developed. No motorized vehicles permitted.

Athabasca River Runners Snowmobile Trails The local snowmobile club helps maintain over 350 miles of trails that can take you as far away as the town of Whitecourt. A clubhouse with staging area is located just west of Athabasca. Signage is in place throughout the trail system. Care and consideration is urged at all times, particularly within municipal boundaries.

Poacher’s Landing Located along the Athabasca River north of Grassland and the AlbertaPacific Forest Industries millsite, Poacher’s Landing is a provincial recreation area offering camping and a staging area for ATVs using the nearby trail system. Watch for steep sections and bridge crossings. For more information, call 780-623-5235.

MAGNIFICENT RIVER RATS FESTIVAL Since 1996, Athabasca’s Magnificent River Rats Festival has become well-known as one of the premier outdoor music events in the province.

Featuring an all-Canadian music line-up, the Magnificent River Rats Festival serves as a showcase for talented local musicians, a means for regional bands to reach new audiences, and a popular venue that has hosted some of Canada’s best known artists. Past Magnificent River Rats headliners have included country music icons like Charlie Major, Prairie Oyster and Michelle Wright; popular folk artists like Leahy, Valdy and Gary Fjellgaard; and classic Canadian rockers like Randy Bachman, Kim Mitchell, Glass Tiger and Honeymoon Suite. But there’s much more to the Magnificent River Rats Festival than the great music. There’s a wide range of children’s activities, a wildly popular classic car show & shine, arts & crafts vendors, on-site food service, a downtown parade, and a spectacular fireworks display to cap it all off. In the early 1900’s, 170 Black settlers came from Oklahoma in search of a more tolerant home and formed the community of Amber Valley, east of Athabasca. Though most of the original families have moved on, the Amber Valley Cultural Centre, Obadiah Place homestead and Jordan Murphy Cemetery remain. Tours of the museum are available by appointment. Located south of Athabasca in the scenic Tawatinaw River valley, Colinton hosts the region’s only bowling alley. The Colinton Hotel’s Thursday steak nights, held throughout the summer months, draw regular visitors from as far away as Edmonton. In the fall, the valley comes alive with colour as the leaves change.

Atmore

Grassland

Prominently located at the junction of Highways 63 & 55 where Fort McMurray travelers make the final northward turn, residents of Atmore show their pride through two signature events, a Hoof-a-Thon trail ride May 4-5 in support of the world-leading Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton, and a popular Community Christmas Supper Dec. 6 that supports the local food bank and Santas Anonymous programs.

Located on the east side of our region along Highway 63, Grassland is well known as a convenient stopping point for travelers between Edmonton and Fort McMurray. The community offers several options to fuel vehicles and motorists alike. Grassland’s community hall hosts several community and cultural events, and the Grassland also hosts motorsports events such as a Father’s Day show & shine in June, mud bog races in August, plus quad rodeos and ATV rallies.

Calling Lake

Perryvale

Located north of Athabasca on Highway 813, Calling Lake is the earliest known settlement in the region. First Nations tribes discovered plentiful fishing in the lake, which remains today as one of the preferred spots for anglers. Part of the Bigstone Cree Nation, Calling Lake offers camping, summer and full-time cottage living, and necessary amenities at two local stores.

Located just off Highway 2, deep in the Tawatinaw valley, Perryvale carries a nostalgic feel with the classic architecture of its two churches, old-style general store and community centre. Locally-produced honey is available, and soft ice cream is popular throughout the summer.

Summer Villages Baptiste & Island Lake

A historic community founded in 1912 by the Canadian Northern Railway, Rochester remains an active, vibrant community with a school, hotel and plenty of green space. The local agricultural society maintains a convenient roadside campground along Highway 2, and hosts a number of dances, suppers, bingos and other events throughout the year to bring the community together. A highlight every August is the Rochester Fair, which features a lengthy candy-throwing parade, children’s games, heavy horse pulling events and an old-time bench show.

Located west of Athabasca, and handful of summer villages surround the neighbouring lakes of Baptiste and Island Lake. Campgrounds, picnic areas, boating and fishing are available at both, and Island Lake has a special bird-watching area.

Smith-Hondo In the northwest corner of our region lie the twin communities of Smith & Hondo. Located near the confluence of the Athabasca and Lesser Slave Rivers, it’s a popular launching point for canoe or raft trips down the Athabasca River. There’s a rustic antique store/restaurant to stop for lunch, and the community shows its pride every Labour Day weekend with the Smith-Hondo Fall Fair that features animal exhibits, kids’ games and exciting pony chuck and chariot races.

Skeleton Lake East of Boyle lie picturesque Skeleton Lake and the summer villages of Bondiss and Mewatha Beach. There are camping and picnic areas around the lake, and challenging nine-hole golf at the Skeleton Lake Golf Course. Not far further east, near Caslan, are Amisk Lake and North Buck Lake, both of which also have day use areas.

Wandering River The last stop on the northward trek up Highway 63 to Fort McMurray, Wandering River is a growing community, set to prosper as the northern anchor of the Alberta Energy Corridor. Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic June 15, 2013 — The Million Dollar Year Boyle native Bryan Mudryk is living his dream, working the sports desk as a TSN anchor and curling broadcaster. After starting with CKSA Lloydminster and a successful stint with CTV Edmonton, Bryan has now called matches at the Vancouver Olympics, the Tim Horton’s Brier and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. But Bryan is most passionate about the charity that helps the very hospital that helped save his life, Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute. In 1996, Bryan was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, which nearly cost him his life. Bryan twice battled the deadly disease, enduring high dosage chemotherapy and stem cell treatments that took his six-foot-one frame and diminished it from 205 pounds to 139. The three years Bryan grappled with cancer were his darkest days. “It was horrible. It can’t help but change you. I learned a lot of life lessons in those three years “ Today, Bryan is cancer free and is more driven than ever to make the most of his dreams.

“Those were the times that drove me when I was healthy to enjoy every day, to embrace what you have and work really hard, because you are not promised tomorrow; I learnt that the hard way.� This year, organizers of the 11th annual Bryan Mudryk Golf Classic fundraiser are going to help realize Bryan’s dream of raising one million dollars, thanks to efforts of all the volunteers, sponsors and donors. Every year, money is raised through the celebrity golf tournament and banquet that goes towards a life saving machine. A Linac MR was purchased in 2012, which allows doctors to see and treat cancer in real time, giving lung and brain cancer patients a 20-40 per cent increase in survival. Past years’ celebrities have included TSN’s Dan O’Toole, Jay Onrait and Darren Dutchyshen; Paul Boyd from Inside Edition; CTV’s Darryl McIntyre, Rob Williams and Joel Gotlib; curling stars Kevin Koe, Jon Morris, Carter Rycroft, Marc Kennedy, and Ben Hebert; former NHL’er Jamie McLennan; TSN’s Kate Beirness; Alberta

village of boyle The second-largest community in our region, the Village of Boyle is a thriving community located on the Highway 63 corridor between Edmonton and Fort McMurray.

Boyle acts as a service centre to large area that includes agricultural producers, forest industries, oil and gas service businesses, First Nations communities, village residents, and cottagers living at nearby Skeleton Lake, Amisk Lake, Hope Lake and North Buck Lake. A vibrant business sector offers both everyday necessities and specialty products and services, supported by an active Chamber of Commerce that helps promote the local economy through local shopping incentives and a pre-Christmas late-night retail promotion. Boyle is poised for future growth as the homebase of the Alberta Energy Corridor, an economic development agency that seeks to develop the region as a service sector for the forestry and oil & gas industries. The Boyle Betterment Committee is a volunteer group dedicated to enhancing the community for both residents and visitors alike. The group’s signature event is the Wildberry Festival in August. The Boyle Agricultural Society remains active year-round hosting

workshops and 4-H events, and they also sponsor the Boyle Rodeo in July that features high-level competition, live entertainment and a popular downtown parade. One of Boyle’s proudest exports is The Sports Network (TSN) commentator Bryan Mudryk, who returns to the community each June to host the Bryan Mudryk & Friends Golf Classic in support of Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute. Recreation opportunities abound in and around Boyle. In the summer, enjoy ball diamonds, a skateboard park, sand volleyball courts and tennis. Golfing lies nearby at both the Skeleton Lake Golf & Country Club and the Northern Ridge Golf & RV Resort. The area’s lakes offer swimming, boating, water skiing and camping. Flat Lake, just west of Boyle, is a haven for birdwatchers. Cross-Country Skiing

One of the most popular outdoor activities for area residents is snowmobiling, and the Athabasca-Boyle region has plenty of room and facilities to accommodate visitors and newcomers to the sport. The Athabasca River Runners help maintain 563 km of trails along four routes that link Athabasca to Swan Hills, Flatbush, Smith and Calling Lake. Poacher’s Landing, near Grassland, is another popular staging area for snowmobile treks. Many local groups also hold snowmobile poker rallies and other fun runs.

Within Athabasca, the Muskeg Creek trail system offers 10 km of groomed crosscountry trails, included a 1.2 km lighted trail for evening outings. Call 780-675-2967 for more information. Island Lake

Located 28 km west of Athabasca on Highway 2. Campground on east side of lake. 8 km NE of Athabasca. Campground and boat launch.

Located 20 km south of Boyle on Sec Rd 831. Camping, boat launch, boat rentals. ATV access only. Access by heading west on cutline 2 km South of Chain Lake (Lower). Reference to a map is recommended. West 30 km on highway 663 from Meanook. Camping, boat launch at Forfar Recreation area.
