FINANCE & ESTATE PLANNING
Precautions when solicited for donations Edmonton Senior News Staff Charities often target certain groups of people when soliciting donations. Those groups may include past donors and people who have recently attended charitable fundraisers. Such an approach can be very effective. It should come as no surprise that criminals posing as legitimate organizations tend to target specific groups of people as well. Anyone can be fooled by a fraudulent charity, but such criminals tend to target seniors more than others. Seniors often make attractive targets to con artists because seniors are most likely to have substantial savings, own their homes and/or have excellent credit. Elderly victims of fraud and other crimes are less likely to report those crimes out of fear that their families may feel they are no longer able to take care of themselves or manage their own finances. These factors make seniors especially attractive and vulnerable to con artists, particularly those who prey on wellintentioned men and women by posing as fake charities. But there are steps seniors can take to protect themselves from fraud. Be skeptical of solicitors. Many con artists will indicate that persons have given to the charity in the past, hoping that prospective victims simply won’t remember if that claim is valid or not. If a solicitor or appeal letter claims
that you donated in the past, don’t simply take it at face value, especially if you don’t recall making such a donation. Get specific information about alleged past donations, checking that information against your own bank records and receipts. Many donors claim donations as deductions on their tax returns, which also can be used to verify or debunk solicitors’ claims. Don’t feel obligated to reciprocate a gift with a donation. Many charities send gifts, be it mailing labels or holiday cards, to prospective donors as a token of appreciation for past donations and as a way of encouraging future donations. Con artists are fully aware of this tactic and may try to imitate it in an attempt to defraud potential victims. No matter if the people behind those mailing labels or holiday ornaments are legitimate charities or con artists, you should not feel compelled to reciprocate a free gift with a financial donation. Beware of solicitors pressuring you to donate. Reputable charities should not be on the verge of shut down if you fail to make a donation, so such organizations never pressure prospective donors into making donations. If a solicitor is pressuring you into making a donation over the phone or in person, chances are this person is not representing a reputable charity. Hang up the phone or, if the solicitor is on your
property, politely close the door, ask the solicitor to leave your property and contact the local authorities. Send donations directly to the charity after independently confirming their address. When making charitable donations, those donations should never be given directly to solicitors. Donations should only be made after you have independently confirmed the charity’s address and mailed straight to the organization. Never make a cash donation, as cash provides no paper trail should you want to deduct your donation or should you learn that you were victimized by a con artist posing as a representative of a reputable charity. Request personal information not be shared. Upon receiving a charitable donation, many charities share their donors’ contact information with other charities. Such actions are legal as long as no sensitive information is shared. But many donors would prefer their contact information not be shared so they don’t find themselves being inundated with solicitations from other charities. Donors can ask to opt out of having their personal information shared upon making a donation. This is especially important for seniors living on fixed incomes who simply cannot afford to support many causes no matter how compelling those causes are.

Cancer Screening Programs Breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening saves lives. Cancer screening helps detect breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer early, when treatment may work better. Alberta Health Services – Cancer Screening Programs coordinates three organized provincial programs: the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program, the Alberta Cervical Cancer Screening Program and the Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program. Working together with your healthcare providers, the goal of these programs is to strengthen cancer screening across the province. These programs provide information and education to support Albertans in making informed decisions about cancer screening.
ALBERTA BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
ALBERTA COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Alberta women and screening mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer at an early stage. This program encourages women who are eligible and have no symptoms to get screened regularly for breast cancer.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Alberta for men and women combined. Screening is the only way to find polyps and colorectal cancer early when 90% of cases can be prevented or treated successfully.
ALBERTA CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
Screening is something we encourage you to learn about if it is not already included in your wellness activities.
Pap tests together with HPV vaccinations are the best way to prevent cervical cancer. By getting screened regularly with a Pap test, any abnormal cells that are found can be monitored and, if needed, treated before they can develop into cancer.
To find out if breast, cervical and/ or colorectal cancer screening is right for you: • Visit www.screeningforlife.ca • Talk to your healthcare provider
To find a doctor: Call Health Link Alberta at 1-866-408-LINK (5465)

10 Diet Tips No Senior Should Skip! Edmonton Senior News Staff As we get older, eating right becomes ever more imperative. Our bodies tend not to be as forgiving of overindulgence and lazy eating; they expect to be well maintained and will punish us if they are not. A proper diet for seniors promotes mental alertness, higher energy, better recuperation from illness or surgery, and avoidance of health problems like osteoporosis and constipation. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy diet as an older person: 1. Understand that as you age, your metabolism slows, therefore all else being equal, you need fewer calories. Depending on activity level, a man over 50 should consume 2,000 to 2,800 calories, while a woman over 50 should consume 1,600 to 2,000
calories. 2. Get plenty of fiber in your diet. This reduces the risk of constipation and certain chronic diseases. Good
sources of fiber include fresh fruits and vegetables including beans, and whole grains. See DIET TIPS, Page 25

HEALTH & WELLNESS
diet tips
From Page 15 3. Reduce bad fats like butter, fried foods, full fat dairy, and fatty meats. Eat good fats that promote the good kind of cholesterol, like avocados, fatty fish, nuts and seeds, and olive oil. 4. Older people are especially at risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures if they fall, so it’s important to get plenty of calcium in your diet for strong bones. Good sources of calcium include almonds, broccoli, cheese, kale, milk, tofu, and yogurt. 5. Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. As we get older, we do not regulate fluid levels as well, and our sense of thirst can be dulled. 6. An older body does not absorb certain nutrients as well, such as vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and folic acid. Be sure to get plenty of these in your diet, or take vitamin supplements. 7. Watch your salt intake. Salt is especially bad for those prone to high blood pressure. 8. Be aware of factors that can alter a person’s diet for the worse, and deal with them. Dental problems can affect the taste of food. Medications can affect the taste of food. Limited mobility can affect a person’s ability to shop for the food they need. Poverty can prevent a person from being able to buy the food they need. Alzheimer’s can leave a person confused
as to what they should be eating, what they’ve eaten so far today, etc. 9. Don’t be too proud to ask for help if you’re having problems like these. Meals on Wheels, for instance, is a wonderful program for getting nu-
tritious food to shut-in seniors. 10. Consult your doctor for nutrition tips specific to you and your condition. People are living longer than ever. Why not aim for 100 or more? With the proper diet, you’ll increase your chances of getting there.

HOMES & LIFESTYLE
Dual master bedrooms rising trend for baby boomers Edmonton Senior News Staff What began as an answer to buyers living alternative lifestyles has rapidly become a desired feature for maturing baby boomers buying a new home. Dual master bedrooms are becoming an attractive idea for couples whose children have long since left the nest. There are a number of reasons for this trend, not the least of which is getting a good night’s sleep. One reason for wanting dual master bedrooms is the need to care for elderly parents. As boomers age, so do their parents. Having a second master suite for elderly family members gives
both the dependent relatives and their caregivers much needed privacy and a degree of independence. For married couples, sleeping together can sometimes become troublesome in the later years. For light sleepers, their partners’ nocturnal visits to the bathroom can rouse them from sleep, making it difficult to get a good night’s rest. Of course, there’s the age-old problem of one partner snoring, while the other lies awake thinking of ways to clog up her loved one’s nostrils without causing suffocation. Having another comfortable bedroom to escape to may be the answer to the prayers of the sleep deprived.
But nightly disturbances are not the only reason for wanting dual master bedrooms. For boomers leaving the workforce, dual master suites gives each partner a retreat, a place that needn’t be shared with anyone else. After years of sharing space, including bathrooms, with spouses, children, and overnight guests, having a space of one’s own can be a dream come true, a reward for years of sacrifice and tight living quarters. Retirement, though, is not necessarily quiet days spent before a television in one’s own bedroom. As boomers enter their retirement years, they’re drawn to active living communities. bedrooms
From Page 27 As is often the case with couples, interests may be divergent. As couples come and go throughout the day and evening, partners can shower, change or nap without interfering with their spouses’ schedule. If all this sounds like couples are living separate lives, and the romance is gone, think again. The allure of visiting one’s love interest in her boudoir
can be an aphrodisiac; and visiting a gentleman’s quarters can feel a bit naughty, adding a bit of spark to the passion. On the more practical side, dual master suites are certain to add market value to a home. Particularly in communities catering to the over-55 market, housing need not be the tra-
ditional home for the nuclear family. Retirees need not be concerned with meeting the needs of children. Rather, they want their own needs met, and they want floor plans that accommodate their new active lifestyle. Dual master bedrooms are versatile and practical. They provide solutions to problematic sleeping arrangements and offer alternative living arrangements for changing lifestyles.

RECREATION & LEISURE
Aging Boomers are out having fun! Can this be good for society? Edmonton Senior News Staff More and more aging Canadian baby boomers can be seen out there doing outrageous things like running, biking, playing tennis and even riding motorcycles. This can’t be a good thing! Actually, it’s a great thing! What a great way to move into retirement! This kind of very active lifestyle adds such life to your years – and improves both mental and physical health. It can however also come with aches, pains, and even the odd strain. As we get older, it is even more important that we treat these conditions properly so that we recover quickly and more completely. Those of you …um…err… with more life experience and wisdom (that was very smooth), have probably noticed that when something hurts now, it takes longer to recover, and sometimes it’s never quite the same afterwards. Our bodies just don’t bounce back like they used to! The great news though, is that when your aching bones are slowing you down, you don’t have to sit at home suffering. But don’t just medicate your pain away! As unpleasant as it can be, remember that pain is one of the most important ways the body has of getting your attention, and telling you what’s wrong with it. Sometimes though, you need a professional to interpret those messages, and treat the body in ways that help it heal as quickly and completely as possible. One professional you should keep on your speed dial, is a good physiotherapist. Once available almost exclusively to elite and professional athletes, physiotherapy services have become much more accessible. While physiotherapy is also essential while recovering from surgery, you don’t need to be recov2014 Edmonton Seniors Products & Services Directory
ering from surgery to benefit from physiotherapy. As a matter of fact, some conditions react so well to physiotherapy that surgery can be avoided altogether. This is great news to older Canadians who are staying more active – and unfortunately experiencing some consequences from all that fun. The aging population is the newest group to benefit from the work of physiotherapists – skilled in the assessment and management of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. A good physiotherapy clinic will often offer osteopathy services as well, and some even practice IMS (Intramuscular Muscle Stimulation) – a relatively new technique that “marries east and west “ – combining the intuition and experience of the eastern practice of acupuncture with the scientific knowledge of western medical science. IMS can be very effective in the management of chronic pain. While there are relatively few physio-
therapists in Canada certified to practice IMS, the Guelph area is fortunate to have a small number of them. So…aging boomers (and those with even more life experience), get out there, and have fun!

Radiant Orchid There is one spring-like hue that trendy consumers should consider incorporating into their wardrobe and accessories because it’s predicted to be a big hit this year.  That hue is Radiant Orchid, which Pantone, the global authority on colour, has declared the colour for 2014.

Top 10 Destinations for Snowbirds The Canadian Snowbird (escapus wintersnowus) is well known for its annual migration to warmer climes. As the bitter cold sets in, the snowbird pack its bag, buys flights, and relocates to another life, typically where a beach is never far away. Here are ten choices for any budding snowbird: 1. Florida Leaves are still on the trees when snowbirds ritually begin heading south to the sunny state of Florida, and towns like Palm Springs, Lake City, Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale. They’re here for one thing – sunshine – and they’re going to get it in abundance. Locals love or hate snowbirds, depending on whether the birds are good for business. As the classic winter escapes above above get overcrowded, snowbirds are venturing out into less-known destinations like Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola Beach, Siesta Key, and sleepy Seaside. As the names suggest, all offer access to Florida’s famous beaches. 2. Costa Rica Some species of snowbirds prefer a bigger change: a difference in culture, a difference in language, currency, and scenic beauty. Costa Rica has the beaches, but it also has beautiful rainforest, and peaceful mountain communities. The country enjoys the third highest life expectancy in the western hemisphere, is affordable, accessible, and even offers Canadian-run health insurance for expats. Snowbirds congregate around the country, but can usually be found in the northern Pacific beach communities of Playa Hermosa, Flamingo, Tamarindo and Malpais. 3. Panama Florida, Mexico and Costa Rica might have led the way for snowbird communities, but up-and-comer Panama is proving to be increasingly popular. Although it might not yet have the housing options or infrastructure of the mainstays, it does have gor2014 Edmonton Seniors Products & Services Directory
geous and predictable winter weather, friendly locals, and a currency that is not just linked to the US dollar, it is the US dollar. Not only is Panama inexpensive, it’s safe and peaceful, and offers outdoor activities like golf, scuba diving and hiking. On a Sunday morning I visited a local expat market in the town of Boquete, discovering a thriving snowbird community, blissfully enjoying the good life. 4. Hawaii Whether you think Hawaii is overcrowded or an island paradise, one thing’s for certain: the islands are blessed with a lifestyle to suit just about any snowbird. Cooling trade winds means it seldom gets too hot (or polluted in the cities). There’s always a beach nearby, with world-class surfing, diving, sailing, windsurfing and other watersports. The main islands appeal to different interests: 95% of the state’s population live on Oahu, so if you’re looking for more of a city vibe, that’s the best bet. Maui is a vacationer’s paradise, with a holidaylike atmosphere. Find remoteness on the Big Island, which is larger than all the other islands combined. Or enjoy
the rainforests, views and small communities of the Garden Isle, Kauai. 5. Mexico Popular locations in Mexico include Puerto Vallarta, attracting snowbirds with its sunny winters and large expat population. Further south, the Yucutan Peninsula has many small towns and fishing villages offering bargains on the dollar, and an international airport at Merida. Playa del Carmen has traditionally attracted younger snowbirds, but the quality lifestyle on offer is packing in boomers. Manzanillo is a fishing paradise with plenty of beachfront condos, and sharing the Pacific is affordable Mazatlán. You’ll also find Canadians settled in San Miguel de Allende, Oaxaca, Guadalajara, and Lake Chapala. 6. Cuba While politics still clips the wings of many a US snowbird, Canadians have been flocking to Cuba, increasing at a steady rate of about 15% a year. Snowbirds are lured by inexpensive beachfront communities around the country, where the loony stretches far. See TOP 10, Page 49

From Page 47 Many all-inclusive resorts also offer long-term snowbird packages. The advantages of Cuba are more than just weather and beaches. It’s just a fourhour flight from Toronto, making it very accessible. The country’s isolation however, does limit communication, and shopping for goods can be a challenge. 7. Thailand Sunny beaches, clear skies, delicious food, friendly locals, oh, and a cost of living estimated to be just 10% of living in North America. It’s easy to see why snowbirds are willing to brave a different hemisphere to escape to Thailand. They might settle amongst the exotic islands of the south, with their squeaky white sandy beaches. Unfortunately, there’s also a possibility of a tourism frenzy, as cheap budget flights from Europe drop off tourists by the plane load (and gather all sorts of hustlers who would prey on them). I’ve always been a fan of the north around Chiang Mai, culturally rich, with a lot less mayhem. As for having to drink fresh fruit shakes and eat a different Thai curry every day, where do I sign up? 8. California Sunny California, especially around Coachella Valley (Palm Springs) and cities like Escondido, LA, San Diego along the So-Cal coast, has long been popular with snowbirds. There’s a huge industry built around facilitating home and condo purchases, and navigating US-Canadian tax law. Although California can be quite pricey, for some Canadians, it’s as comfortable as slipping into a second skin. 9. Arizona Bordering New Mexico, California, Utah and Nevada, Arizona is blessed with mild, sunny winters and plenty of space to accommodate northern snowbirds. Boomers and retirees typically settle in lifestyle communities that surround the capital of Phoenix. Places like Scottsdale, Quartzite, Sun Cities and Yuma, where temperatures from December to March hover pleasantly 2014 Edmonton Seniors Products & Services Directory
around 20°C. With over 300 golf courses in the state, Arizona is a golfer’s paradise. Being inland from the coast also means more affordable housing. 10. Nicaragua Relishing its political stability, Nicaragua is attractive to Snowbirds for its natural beauty, beaches, colonial towns
and affordable prices. Granada, a 500 year-old cobblestone town lined with great restaurants and bars, is home to thousands of expats. Or consider historical Leon, close to beaches and scenic volcanoes. Ocean front houses might cost under $100,000, and the cost of living is extremely low. Another popular snowbird nest is the resort town of San Juan del Sur. Source – The Loop
