22-26th November, 2012 were the best days of the lives of the first year students studying at Fortune Institute of International Business as they went for an educational trip to Dubai which spanned 5 days that were exciting, full of adventures, learning, experiences, meeting new people, learning about Dubai culture, economics and social life of the local people.

DUBAI STU While the second year students visited China the desert and the beach of the Land of including Prof. Vijayeta, Prof. Kumar Shreesti Ghosh recreates the magic of through his

The first night in Dubai began with a mesmerizing experience at Dubai Dhow Cruise from the lovely Dubai Creek. Everyone was welcomed onboard to the traditional Arabian wooden dhow looking opulent, elegant and ready to sail. The Dhow Cruise slowly sailed through the old Dubai with its antique wind houses on one side and gleaming concrete monoliths on the other. Historic and vintage buildings such as The Heritage Village, Sheikh Saeed House, Wind Towers of Bastakia, Al Makhtoum Bridge and the lovely water taxis zipping past the dhow was shown. As Dhow Cruise Dubai moved ahead, other vessels, Abras and luxury yachts moving smoothly on the crystal clear water of the Sea were observed. This Cruise was one of it’s kind that one should never like to miss ever. Since the Dhow sailed slowly, everyone ambled through the deck and wished that this trip never ended. The most courteous Dhow Cruise staff was forever ready to pamper everyone with onboard buffet dinner and refreshing drinks. The next destination was Gold Souk located in the heart of Dubai's commercial business district in Deira, in the locality of Al Dhagaya. Dubai is known for really cheap gold .Whether or not you're ready to buy, a stroll through the dazzling Gold Souk is a must. The stores offer platinum, diamonds and occasionally silver and street vendors could be seen outside hawking "genuine fake" watches and "Gucci" handbags. All the most elite jewelry brands of Dubai have their center here: Joyalukkas, Taiba, Damas, Pure Gold Jewellers, Al Zain, Kaloti, Dhamani, Tanishq. Burj Khalifa, world’s tallest building and a free standing structure was a living wonder and a piece of art. More than just the world’s tallest building, it is an unprecedented example of international cooperation, symbolic beacon of progress, and an emblem of the new, dynamic and prosperous Middle East. One sculpture over there said “From the earth to the sky” and this was in fact true when Dubai looked so beautiful from the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa and at that moment nothing else mattered but the view.

I am going to Dubai and I am really excited to explore the Beauty of the City. Going to Dubai was a wonderful experience as the city is beautifully constructed and marvelous experience of seeing Burj Khalifa- the tallest building of the world. We had a good exposure of 2 industries that we visited there i.e. Danube- a construction company and Exide subsidiary. It truely met my expectations. - Jasmine Kaur, Sec A I am not going to Dubai because of some work but I think its a great itinerary that has been prepared for the students with everything from cultural to educational covered, so its going to be fun. CANDID CONVERSATIONS They came and they conquered! Out of the 7 contests that were held at Sankalp 2012, they won four- the maximum for any team. Editorial Board member Aakanksha Joshi gets candid with the Silent Assassins, Utkarsh Garg, Sugandha Arora, Sangam Lalsivaraju and Dhruv Mahajan about what made the team so victorious!

Aakanksha (A): It must be an amazing feeling to win. Did you have a strategy as a team? Sugandha (S) - It was indeed a great feeling winning the competitions. The strategy that we adopted was that our team comprised of the same members as our class group. Dhruv (D) – Further, we wanted to compete in all the competitions. It dint matter whether we win or lose. One strategy that was adopted by us was to focus on team work and proper coordination amongst the team. Utkarsh (U) – I don’t think we had a strategy. We just aimed to win by giving our 200%. Shiva(Sh)- The coordination amongst ourselves helped a lot! A: Did you compete against each other in the process? S - I guess there’s a little bit of competition in everything that we do, that’s what makes us strive for excellence and success. D - We were stormed with diverse answers amongst the team at the time of Bizz Quiz but then it can’t be called “competition” rather “brainstorm” to reach a unanimous decision. ;) U - No, not at all because we participated in a true spirit as we are best buddies. Sh- I can't say it's a competition; however I improved my performance based on my team's performance as a scale. A: What kind of preparation was needed for this competition? S - Preparation! Not really. Presence of mind worked the best for us coupled with the extensive learning that we had here in FIIB in these 4 months. D - The competition was majorly a general overview of our awareness regarding the basic principles and methodologies of the corporate world, in a way testing our MBA skills.  U – These competitions helped us to exercise our brains so we just needed to use it! SL – I think we had to take care of one thing! We registered for the workshops at Sankalp in a way that it dint disturb our participation in competitions. And we managed time well. And we did some practice for competitions like Silent Talkers and the presentations.

Student Speak It is an old adage, “Home is where the heart is”. At home, we learn in a better way, but when we are outside our home, we are bound to learn it in a little bitter way. This learning is beneficial throughout our life but the path is rough and sometimes ruthless too. Many FIIB students are from outside Delhi. Priyanka Singh interacted with them to find out how it feels being away from HOME SWEET HOME and living in hostels and PG!

“Mutual cooperation, sympathy, and love are the characteristics of hostel life. Hostel life not only develops the spirit of healthy competition, but also teaches the lesson of mutual cooperation. I have been enjoying it since my graduation. I learned many things from my hostel life like - to be independent, to adjust with others, a sense of confidence & self help” - Ankit Phartiyal, PGDM 2012-14 “All the fun that we share together cannot be done at home. That fun can be anything, from waking up late on holidays or making vegetable sandwiches and Maggie. I have keen interest in managing things. And it is an advantage to my hostel life. Therefore whether it is a birthday party in my hostel or we plan to go out to some place, my friends automatically put this responsibility upon me to arrange such events. And I learn a lot from these small things”- Prateek Anand, PGDM 2011-13 “Being away from home is learning with a variety of people. It churns out a lot of energy from you but ultimately it fills positivity inside you because you learn how to create a balance between what you like and dislike. Also, it is a home away from home, I was missing Rakshabandhan since I could not go home this time. We started Mehndi session here in our hostel. It was crazy but I found happiness.”-Shruti Dubey, PGDM 2012-14 “It is a great experience to be staying away from home especially in a city like Delhi. According to me it is a great platform for me to learn from the real life.I came to know the real value of friendship, family and money. And being a Chef (my previous career) it is a great place to try new dishes independently without getting scoldings from my mom which I used to get at my home when I mess up the kitchen !” - Libin Joseph, PGDM 2012-14 “We cannot compare the hostel life with our home. I faced a lot of criticisms in early days but I am gradually learning how to handle hardships. I also learn from my hostel mates that how they act positively in hard times etc.” Rashi Gupta, PGDM 2012-14

Outings and get togethers are a norm at Hostels

At the hostel, students find families away from their families

Students experimenting with Living in hostels give us a wider scope to interact and express. This helps us to broaden our perspectives Mehendi

and learn more because there are different kind of people who have varied culture, thinking pattern, fooding style etc. We come out of our comfort zone and start accepting the people the way they are, not the way we want them to behave. We come out of our shells and become prosocial. The sociability factor increases. Living in such environment once in a life is plus to our personality development.
