“You can learn anything!” To learn anything, you only need to know one thing. That you can learn anything!- Sal Khan, Khan Academy What a powerful statement. It packs so much in it. You may have heard it before; but I want to share some research behind this which is absolutely revolutionizing the way we are learning in this decade. Specifically, this research shows that it is possible to boost one's achievements by just changing our mindset. Let’s consider a small case study to understand this. There are two students: Student A has a 9.3 CGPA and has been on the Dean's Honor Roll for each of the previous 4 terms. He completed his CIP at well-known FMCG Company working on an industry study project. He was the class representative for the junior year. Apart from this he mentions he hasn’t had the time to pursue any extracurricular or co-curricular activities as they would have distracted him from keeping her grades up. During interactions with him. he impresses us with his strengths and also makes it clear that he neither has any weaknesses nor has ever experienced failure.
Student B has a CGPA of 7.5. She completed her CIP at a digital marketing start-up company. Enthused by the positive experience she has in this challenging set-up, she develops a strong interest in the area and has been working on a part-time live project with an NGO in helping set up their social media presence with an aim to increase awareness for the NGO. She has participated in most competitive events on campus with mixed results for herself. In conversations with her she comes across as a grounded person who has persisted in the face of setbacks and embraced challenges.
Who do you think has a higher chance of being successful and happy at the workplace, and more generally in life? Let’s look at some research. Carol Dweck is a researcher at Stanford University and through her research she reveals the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset- “In a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb” - This is Student A. He keeps doing the same thing again and again –excels in academics, because that has a high chance of success. He does not take challenges or accept that he has made a mistake, because that would make him look less smart. The extracurricular that he takes on are the ones that are low effort and low risk. He would probably not try for a debate competition or lead a new initiative because for these he may have to struggle and potentially fail. Such students may plateau in their careers and achieve less than their full potential. “In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort and persistence. They believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it” - This is Student B. She prefers taking on challenging assignments and learning from them. She is open-minded about life’s experiences and feedback received because she has a strong desire to improve. This helps her reach her full potential. As a result of this research, we now know that much of our success depends on our belief that our abilities can be developed and grown, versus believing that they are fixed. If the brain is a muscle, then like every other muscle in our body it must get stronger as we exercise it more by doing harder and harder tasks rather than repeatedly attaining success with familiar and easier ones. You need to have effort, struggle, and failure on a continuous basis to change your learning outcomes. You need to embrace challenges and sometimes look not-so-smart to attain overall success. An important part of Dweck’s research is most people are neither 100% growth nor 100% fixed mindset people. And therefore in reality there are no Student A and B as described above. There’s usually a combination of both. Another key part of this research is that we can train ourselves at all ages to change our mindsets. In case you would like to read about some of Carol Dweck’s growth mindset interventions, do read her book Mindset –The New Psychology of Success. As the student clubs heat up their activities on campus towards the end of September, do consider using your growth mindset to enroll in the myriad of activities that will be offered. See how just believing that you can learn anything, will affect your motivation, ability to accomplish tasks, and achieve your goals!
