INTRODUCTION
This brief report has been compiled on the request of Fiji Embassy in Washington, DC. Fiji Indians or Indo-Fijians have been immigrating to USA since l930s in ones and twos mainly as tourists or sailors who eventually jumped ship and overstayed in America. A good number also came as serious students for further studies a trend that began in the 50s. Most chose to remain in US after their studies or midway their career, married and settled down here. Some of them became very successful doctors, engineers and professionals. With the passage of time people in this category did not go back home and got very enthralled in the American ways. 1987 Military Coup opened a floodgate There has been an influx of Fiji immigrants after the 1987 military coup in Fiji who came in thousands and sought political asylum in US. A large of number of them settled in in the Bay Area, the Fiji Indians in cities like San Bruno, South San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, San Jose and Monterey, spreading further to East to Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento, Marysville, Reno and Nevada. Native Fijians settled in great numbers in Marina, San Rafael, Santa Rosa, Napa and Sacramento. Some also settled in Portland and Washington states.

Greece pledges €6.6bn in austerity
The Greek government said it passed a new budget backed by its international creditors, including larger deficits than previously forecast, as the country moves closer to securing an 8 billion-euro ($10.7 billion ) aid payout needed to avoid default. PM George Papandreou's Cabinet also passed 6.6 billion euros of austerity measures last night to cut the 2012 deficit to 6.8% of gross domestic product, missing the 6.5% goal previously set with the EU, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank, known as the troika . Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos had previously said Greece would miss the targets and the troika accepted the new budget. The new deficit numbers "should not derail Greece's current negotiations with the troika," Geoffrey Yu, a currency strategist at UBS AG in London, wrote in a note to clients. "Greece pledged to undertake additional spending cuts in order to secure the next aid tranche. We remain of the view that Greece will ultimately receive its current bailout tranche." Greek bonds fell before European FMs gathered on Monday to consider enhancement's to the region's rescue fund.

In contrast to Fiji Indians, Native Fijians are for the most part wage earners. Very few are in high tech industries, education or engineering profession. They also lag behind in business ownership one of the keys to survival in the US environment with tax benefits and small business administration loans. This is an area where I would like to assist our Native Fijians to get involved in a big way.

TWO bushfires along the Queens Road yesterday have sparked concerns with the National Fire Authority urging people to take care when burning rubbish. Around noon, firefighters put out a fire that broke out near a home at Mokosoi Road, Pacific Harbour after uncontrolled burning of rubbish.
There will be no political manifestos come the General Elections in 2014. This was confirmed to FBC News by Sitiveni Raturala from the Office for Strategic Framework for Change. Raturala says manifestos will be planned by political parties based on development approved by the people of Fiji and contained in the National Charter. He says in the past, political parties planned manifestos according to what they could do - but most of the time it was used to buy votes and never fulfilled. Raturala says for the 2014 elections, parties will follow the development goals outlined in the charter which he says have been approved by the people.
Fiji’s private sector has been acknowledged by government for its crucial role in implementing the Buy Fiji Made initiative as a basis for their exported products. Minister for Trade and Commerce Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the private sector holds the key to growing Fiji’s export base and this is a fundamental and integral part of the initiative. "I would like to acknowledge the input by the private sector and the Fijian companies to be the driving force of the Buy Fijian Made initiative," he said while opening the Top Executive (TOPEX) meeting of the Fiji

Three Police Commissioners from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea have confirmed their participation to attend the Police Commissioners Conference on March 23 in Suva, Fiji. NEW YORK -- A magnitude-7.2 earthquake rattled Fiji in the Pacific Ocean on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. No tsunami warning was issued, and no damage or casualties were immediately reported. The 7:30 a.m. (1930 GMT Thursday) quake was deep, some 368.5 miles (593 kilometers) below the surface, the USGS said. The USGS said the quake hit some 264 miles (425 kilometers) west of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, and 281 miles (453 kilometers) southeast of Suva, Fiji.
Indian national Muskan Balaggan, 21, has pleaded to the Suva Magistrate Court for leniency when it reaches a suitable punishment for her. Charged with one count of giving false information to a public servant, Balaggan appeared before Magistrate Nanise Ratakele this afternoon for mitigation. Ministry misses 1per cent target
CLOSE to 80,000 people remain infected in Fiji with lymphatic filariasis commonly known as "Elephantiasis" or waqaqa as the Health Ministry launched its mass drug administration (MDA) of the anti-filariasis tablets to eradicate the disease. The MDA program, launched by Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma yesterday, started in Fiji in 2002 and was conducted for five years. And it was later revealed in a survey in 2007 that the prevalence fell from 16.6 per cent in 2001 to 9.5 per cent in 2007. "Filariasis is a dreadful, disfiguring disease that has affected our population for many years. This is clearly visible with the grotesque pictures that are distributed. The disfigurement and disabilities that are associated are a consequence of not taking the antifilarial tablets that is given out every year," Dr Sharma said. He said the recommended prevalence was below 1 per cent but this had not
been achieved. "The drugs that are taken will not only kill the parasite or worm in our body but will also provide some protection from re-entry of the worm into the body for some time," Dr Sharma said. "The worm enters the body through the bite of an infected mosquito, which immediately causes no obvious sign that one has the disease. "Every person above the age of two years old needs to take these drugs to break the transmission of this disease from person to person." The Western Division, according to the ministry is free of the disease. Tablets will be distributed in the Central Division (Suva, Rewa, Navua, Tailevu, Naitasiri), parts of the Eastern Division (Kadavu, Lomaiviti and Lau groups) and the Northern Division (Macuata, Cakaudrove, Bua and Taveuni). While tablets will be available at health centres, teams will make house-to-house calls.
Amidst China’s growing presence into the Pacific, it has announced financial assistance to Fiji of 40 million RMB. This was announced by the President of China Hu Jintao in a bilateral meeting with the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau last month in Shenzhen. Jintao said China fully recognised the importance of Fiji’s position among other Pacific Island Countries and that Fiji was the first Pacific country to establish diplomatic ties with China. He said China respected the sovereignty of a country and its territorial integrity irrespective of its size and status.

ADVERTISING BAN ON BABY FOOD
Marketing controls on food for infants and young children will come into effect from Friday. The Health Ministry together with the Consumer Council of Fiji will keep a close eye on labels that are a must for baby food. Health spokesperson Prisilla Govind told FBC News all infant food that do not carry proper labels will be seized. "The regulations apply to products imported into, packed in, or produced and processed in Fiji for domestic distribution and consumption or export or re-export. It prohibits the promotion, marketing, and advertising of all commercial infant formula drinks and food products, including feeding bottles, teats and pacifiers." New laws also ban companies producing baby milk from any form of sponsorship.

MARKED improvements in foreign reserves and the recent payment of $US150 million ($F276m) global bond combined with the upward revision of Fiji's credit rating should see a boost in foreign investment. Deputy secretary for Finance Kelera Vakaloloma said this, plus an increase in foreign investor interest from Asia and the Americas was a positive sign of economic recovery. "With marked improvement in our foreign reserves, now over $1.6 billion, the prospects for growth oriented policies are more viable and much easier to implement," she said. Ms Vakaloloma said recent trade missions to Fiji by prospective foreign investors from Canada, Thailand, China and the US showed investor confidence was building. The Fiji Police Force sounded the warning yesterday following recent incidents where police officers were assaulted while executing their duties. A police officer was assaulted in t e Southern Division and another in the Northern Division in the past two weeks. Both were injured. Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said police officers were there to help members of the public "and they are your friends who will help you in your times of need". Brig-Gen Naivalurua said it was also important to remember that police officers had the right to defend themselves while being attacked. A woman police officer suffered injuries to her eyes when she was assaulted by two youths along Khalsa Road, Nasinu last Friday.

The Australian High Commission visa service opened its Suva office on Monday. The centre, a first for the Pacific, was launched and attended by dignitaries from national and international stakeholders. The centre is outsourced by global telecommunications company TT services. Australian acting High Commissioner Kirsty McNeil officiated at the opening and said it was a significant event. “This event shows our commitment to our client. We value our clients and guests’ feedback which this office is a reflection off. This is the first for the Pacific. “This will be the first of two offices we will set up in Fiji. The other will opened in Lautoka shortly.” “Be it consultation, visa application filing, preparing prospective immigrants for personal interview.
Women wash in sea water
THE lack of proper water supply experienced on an island in Macuata has forced women to wash their utensils and clothes in the sea. Five families at Macuatai-Wai have no choice but to depend on rainwater for drinking. Villager Ratu Jone Matanababa said the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) had installed a tank with piping system in 2009 but the pressure from the source was too low to pump water to households. "The five families are entirely dependent on rainwater because the water supply from the tank is too low to cater for the villagers," Ratu Jone said. "It can take villagers about half an hour to fill a 500 millilitre Coke bottle from their taps because of the low pressure," he said. "The situation
here has seen women washing their dishes and clothes in the sea." Ratu Jone said villagers desperately needed assistance because they were affected for the past eight months. "We are seeking assistance and we hope someone will assist us with our water supply so we can continue with our daily work normally," he said. In response, WAF media liaison officer Maika Nagalu said their rural water supply officers visited the island last week to rectify the problem. "Water supply has been restored on the island since last week and we ask villagers to use water wisely because the tank only has a capacity of 6,500 liters which is not enough for the households in the village," he said.

Subsidies even for those spending over Rs 32 a day
NEW DELHI : Seeking to counter the perception of insensitivity, the government and the Planning Commission came together to remove caps on the number of poor an individual state can have and formally de-linked subsidies from the income threshold, but did not agree to change its definition of poverty, at least immediately. The stand, to be articulated shortly in the Supreme Court, has been shaped more by political needs of a regime already under pressure on the twin issues of corruption and inflation. Faced with a furore over the Rs 32 poverty line, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and rural development minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters that states would not be required to peg the number of beneficiaries of Centre's welfare schemes. A census to identify people living below the poverty line (BPL census) is underway and the plan was to restrict handouts to only a limited number in every state. The formal de-coupling of poverty and entitlements such as subsidized food, fuel and fertilizer is significant because of indications that a move was on to reduce the subsidy burden.The clarification marks the triumph of pragmatic politics over an approach that focused on fiscal consolidation.

NEW DELHI: India is gradually building powerful military capabilities in tune with its expanding geopolitical interests, which are no longer limited to the swathe stretching from the Persian Gulf to Malacca Strait, even as the eastern and western fronts are being strengthened to deter the twin Pakistan-China threat. After the over Rs 3,00,000 crore plan to build a potent three-dimensional Indian Navy for the future, reported by TOI last month, it was IAF's turn on Monday to assert it was on the path to transform into a true aerospace power with the capability to rapidly deploy and operate around the globe. "No other air force has attempted to modernize at such a fast pace in such a short span of 15 years," said Air Chief Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne, indicating a doctrinal shift in the run-up to IAF's 79th anniversary on October 8. But he was quick to emphasize this did not mean "an expeditionary force" on the lines of the US Air Force. "We are not going to fight other people's wars. But yes, IAF must have the wherewithal to meet the requirements wherever India's strategic interests lie," said the IAF chief. As for the two-front challenge,
apart from progressively basing Sukhoi-30MKI fighters and missile squadrons in the two theatres, the plan also includes upgrading the Nyoma advanced landing ground in eastern Ladakh, located 23km from the LAC with China at an altitude of 13,300 feet. "We want a 12,000feet runway capable of handling fighters as well as transport aircraft at Nyoma. It will give us both defensive and offensive options. After being cleared by the defence ministry, it's now going to the Cabinet Committee on Security," said Browne. Similarly, learning lessons from the 1999 conflict with Pakistan, the Kargil airstrip will be extended to ensure strategic airlift aircraft like C-17 Globemaster-III and C-130J 'Super Hercules' as well as fighters can operate from there. Moreover, the next six C-130Js, after the first six procured for the Hindon airbase for $1.2 billion, will be based at Charbatia (Orissa) for the eastern sector. Armed with perspective plans till 2027, IAF is looking at a combat fleet of 250-300 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, 126-200 medium multi-role fighter aircraft and 270 Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, as also over 100 upgraded MiG-29s and Mirage-2000s.

KATHMANDU: On Tuesday morning, a day after her daughter Nihita Biswas Sobhraj made her debut on Color TV's reality show Bigg Boss and defended her husband Charles Sobhraj, the alleged serial killer of yesteryear, Shakuntala Thapa received a congratulatory phone call from an unexpected caller. It was from Bishwo Lal Shrestha, a former policeman turned lawyer who was hired by the family of Connie Jo Bronzich, the American backpacker who was killed in 1975 and whose murder was pinned on Sobhraj almost three decades later by Nepal's police and judiciary. Shrestha had been a police officer when the murder occurred in 1975 and says he recognised Sobhraj, who had been living in Kathmandu at that time posing as a Dutch tourist. In 2003, when Sobhraj was seen in Kathmandu and arrested from a casino, he says Shrestha played a key
role in getting him convicted by liaising with a former Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg, who sent the Nepali authorities a document described as Sobhraj's confession to murder before Indian authorities in New Delhi. It is not just Shrestha who has an interest in Bigg Boss to see how contestant number four Nihita conducts herself and defends Sobhraj. She has already mentioned that the reports of mass serial killings against him are just rumours and that in many of the countries where he is said to have committed the murders, there is not even any police complaint filed against him. Indeed, even in India, where Sobhraj's crimes were the most well-documented, he was jailed only for lesser crimes like robbery and forgery with all murder charges being turned down by the judges for lack of evidence.

A bench comprising justices Altamas Kabir, Cyriac Joseph and S S Nijjar rejected the plea of NRI Thota Venkateswarlu that the trial court in Andhra Pradesh cannot take cognisance of a complaint of harassment, dowry
demands and criminal intimidation lodged by his wife, as the couple were living in Botswana. The NRI's wife Parvathareddy Suneetha returned from Botswana and lodged the complaint with the police which filed a charge sheet in the court of the additional munsif magistrate, Addanki, Prakasham district against her husband and other relatives. The apex court said, "The language of Section 188 CrPC is quite clear that when an offence is committed outside India by a citizen
of India, he may be dealt with in respect of such offences as if they had been committed in India. "The proviso, however, indicates that such offences could be inquired into or tried only after having obtained the previous sanction of the central government." Justice Kabir said Section 188 is a fetter on the powers of the investigating authority to inquire into offence to the extent that it can be done only with the previous sanction of the central government.

It may be OK to have 3rd child, only if it's a girl
MUMBAI : Four decades ago, India was introduced to the government plea-Hum Do Hamare Do (We Two, Our Two), Horn Ok Please-through highway trucks. The state government now plans to rethink the campaign, and incentivize the birth of a third child-but only if it is a girl. The idea is to narrow the state's child sex ratio, among the worst in the country at 883 girls for every 1,000 boys. The national average is 914:1,000. The proposal will soon come to the cabinet. It seeks to reward couples who give birth to a third child, a girl, by taking care of her education and giving other financial rewards on the lines of those being offered under the Rajmata Jijau Malnutrition Free Maharashtra programme. The existing laws will be tweaked to ensure government employees or elected representatives at all levels, including the gram panchayats, are not disqualified for giving birth to a third girl child.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his government is ready to start parleys with Taliban, but evaded questions whether the reconciliation would include the Haqqani faction. For the first time, Gilani dropped his earlier pre-condition of militants giving up arms before any talks, but warned that if the parleys fail to work, the military will launch operations in the tribal areas. "If negotiations fail to work, the government will launch military operations in the tribal areas," he told a small group of journalists at his residence in Lahore last night. Gilani provided details about how the talks would be conducted for the first time, days after a meeting of Pakistan's political parties called for peace talks to end unrest in the militancy-hit tribal belt. "We will not ask them (militants) to disarm
before the negotiations since this is against the tribal culture. However, the political agents (government administrators in the tribal regions) will ask them to decommission themselves," he was quoted as saying in media reports today. The proposed talks will be monitored by a parliamentary committee to ensure transparency and civilian oversight of the process, he said. "We want to give peace a chance now...The national interest is above everything, we will give people a chance to reconcile." Asked whether the Haqqani network - blamed by the US for high-profile terror attacks in Afghanistan - would be part of the reconciliation, Gilani evaded a direct answer and said a parliamentary committee would implement resolutions passed on such issues by parliament and the All Parties Conference (APC) that was held on September 29.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's antiterrorism court sentenced to death on Saturday the elite police guard who shot dead the former governor of Punjab Salman Taseer early this year. Taseer had been calling for reform of Pakistan's harsh blasphemy law. Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, one of Taseer's elite police guards, assassinated the governor for his liberal and progressive views on January 4, when he was about to get into his car outside a restaurant in Islamabad. Taseer's had called Pakistan's draconian blasphemy law --"a black law". His murder has put the country's liberal elite on the

Oil company idles production in southern Colombia field, citing disruptions by worker protests
A petroleum company in Colombia has halted pumping of 225,000 barrels of oil a day because union workers protesting for pay raises and better health care have blocked roads in the region. Canada-based Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. says the field that was idled Tuesday in southern Colombia accounts for a quarter of the South American nation’s oil production. The operation was shut down for a day and a half in mid-July because of worker protests. The workers’ union is demanding the company increase wages and improve working conditions and health care. In spite of the data missing expectations, NZDUSD failed to breach support at 0.8207 and continues to trend near this support level as of 02:25 GMT on Sept. 21. The Relative Strength Indicator remained well within the 30 to 70 range, reflecting a lack of strong buying or selling of the currency. The 2 nd quarter current account balance was -NZ$0.921 billion compared to the median prediction of -NZ$0.671 billion in a Bloomberg survey. This figure brought the cumulative current account deficit for the year to June to 3.7 percent of GDP. The main contributor to the deficit was the net income from abroad balance – at -NZ$2.698 billion – which more than offset a positive goods and services balance driven by strong dairy and agricultural exports. The South Pacific island of Tonga will soon get its first solar power plant, thanks to a bit of help from its neighbor to the south. The New Zealand government has announced that it will provide $7.9 million toward the solar project. The project, which we spotted on the Renewable Energy Magazine site, is a public-private partnership with Meridian Energy, Tonga Power Limited and the Tongan government that will result in a 1 megawatt solar power plant. Construction is expect to start by the end of this year. Estimates are it will meet 4 percent of Tonga’s power needs while offseting 470,000 liters of diesel per year. The nation of Tonga includes 169 islands across 700,000 square miles, although just 36 of the islands are inhabited, according to the CIA World Factbook. A July 2011 estimate put the population at 105,916 residents. Tonga exports include fish, vanilla, kava and squash, primarily to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Japan and the United States.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully formally withdrew Sept. 16 from representing the South Pacific nation at the 10-year anniversary of the original World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, which degenerated into an anti-Israel fest. "We remain concerned that the commemoration of the 2001 Durban Declaration could reopen the offensive and anti-Semitic debates which undermined the original world conference,” McCully said. “For these reasons, we have decided not to participate.” New Zealand, which also withdrew from the Durban Review Conference in 2009, joins the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Israel and the United States in opting out of the event.

Pacific wasn't able to get things in sync over the weekend, ultimately falling to the Claremont-MuddScripps for the second year in a row, this time to the tune of a 28-9 clubbing. Pacific receiver Jordan Fukumoto was owner the lone Boxers highlight of the day, moving into second in the school's record books (longest reception) with an 87-yard touchdown catch thrown by QB T.C. Campbell. Fukumoto went on to lead the squad with 4 catches and a season-high 137 yards receiving. Campbell had limited success throwing the ball, completing 14 of 26 passes for 191 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Because one section of Muslim traditionalists said the moon was not visible by human eye at the time of the original celebration, and other traditionalists said, based on scientific calculations, the moon could be seen. Two opinions, hence two Eids. Islam is not a homogeneous religion. My family was among an estimated 6,000 people who came to observe Eid at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds on Aug. 31. There was much jubilation, but I joined in serious talk about reforms and the introduction of pluralism, democracy and secular governments. These 10 years have been bad news

This kind of sermon is common all over the Islamic world. Growing up in India, I heard it. When I migrated to Pakistan, the Islamists never said that people of other faiths will also end up in heaven. As discussion turned to pluralism and secular governments, our group

We thought how we could best serve our community in America as well as influence events and governments in the Muslim countries that are teetering on the brink of lawlessness, anarchy and corruption. Said during Ramazan about 8 girls and 9 boys were most regular at Tarawi prayers some of whom also set in Iteqaaf (last 10 days of complete dedication at the mosque) and participation in the Lailatul Qadr Night. NEW DELHI: Nine out of 10 women in Afghanistan are worried about the Taliban returning to power as it could risk the gains they have made in the past 10 years, a survey by NGO ActionAid has found. "In a poll conducted among 1,000 women across Afghanistan, 66 percent said they feel safer now than they did 10 years ago, while 72 percent believed their lives are better now than 10 years ago," the survey, released Monday, said in the wake of the current reconciliation process with the Taliban. "Of those who fear a return of the Taliban, 1 in 5 cited their daughters' education as the main concern," the survey report said. Oct 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the US and British forces' intervention in
Afghanistan. For experts working with the women of the war-ravaged territory, their inclusion in policymaking has been the major concern till now. "All parties involved must make public statements that the equal rights for men and women that are enshrined in the Afghan constitution - including women's right to education, to work, and to participate in public life - are sacred and will never be overturned," said Belinda Calaguas, director of policy of ActionAid. The NGO's Afghanistan country director, P.V. Krishnan said: "If Afghan women are excluded from decision-making on the future of their country, we risk not only sacrificing the gains made for women over the past ten years.
Lama will receive the Mahatma Gandhi peace prize, the legendary Indian leader's granddaughter Ela Gandhi announced here today on Gandhi Jayanti and asked the South African government to grant a visa to the Tibetan spiritual leader to visit the country. The Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation will be conferred on the 76-year-old Dalai Lama at the annual Satyagraha Awards to be held at the Durban City Hall next Sunday. The event is one of several public invitations that the Dalai Lama has accepted during a proposed South African visit this week, amid concern that the South African government may not grant him a visa under Chinese pressure.
TRIPOLI: Muammar Gaddafi's son, al-Saadi, denied allegations of corruption and intimidation and called Interpol's decision to put him on the equivalent of its most-wanted list political, according to an email. Al-Saadi Gaddafi is under house arrest in Libyan neighbor Niger, where he fled after Tripoli fell to revolutionary forces. His father and two of his brothers are in hiding, presumably inside Libya, as fighting between revolutionary forces and Gaddafi loyalists continues on three fronts. Al-Saadi "regrets the issue of a red notice by Interpol and strenuously denies the charges made against him," an email forwarded Sunday to The Associated Press said. Interpol issued a red notice for alSaadi last week based on accusations he misappropriated property and engaged in "armed intimidation" when he headed the Libyan Football Federation. He also was a special forces commander and is the subject of UN sanctions for commanding military units involved in repression of demonstrations. The international police agency said the notice was issued in response to a request by the Libya's National Transitional Council, which has assumed leadership of the North African nation. Niger, which borders Libya on the south and long benefited from Gaddafi's largesse, has said it would study the question. In the email, al-Saadi called the Interpol notice a "clear political decision to recognize the de jure authority of the National
JERUSALEM: An Israeli writer has won a historic court victory granting his request to be officially registered as "without religion" rather than "Jewish", Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday. Yoram Kaniuk turned to the courts in May after the interior ministry refused to alter his official religious status from Jewish to "without religion", Haaretz said. And last week, a Tel Aviv court sided with his demand, ruling that Israeli law allows citizens to be officially registered as having no religion. "Freedom from religion is a freedom derived from the right to human dignity, which is protected by the Basic Law on Human Dignity and Freedom," Haaretz quoted the ruling as saying. Kaniuk called the court's decision a "ruling of historic proportions". "I can be without religion but Jewish by nationality. I am so thrilled," he said. That has raised the ire of secular groups who have petitioned the interior ministry for years to replace the Jewish ethnicity label with an Israeli one.
PERUGIA: An Italian appeals court threw out Amanda Knox's murder conviction on Monday and ordered the young American freed after nearly four years in prison for the death of her British roommate. Knox collapsed in tears after the verdict overturning her 2009 conviction was read out. Her co-defendant, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, also was cleared of killing 21-year-old Meredith Kercher in 2007. The Kercher family looked on grimly and a bit dazed as the verdict was read out by the judge after 11 hours of deliberations by the eightmember jury. Outside the courthouse, some of the hundreds of observers shouted "Shame, shame!" Yet inside the frescoed courtroom, Knox's parents, who have regularly traveled from their home in Seattle to Perugia to visit the 24year-old over the past four years, hugged their lawyers and cried with joy. "We've been waiting for this for four years," said one of Sollecito's lawyers, Giulia Bongiorno.
The judge upheld Knox's conviction on a charge of slander for accusing bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba of carrying out the killing. He set the sentence at three years, meaning for time served. Knox has been in prison since Nov. 6, 2007. Prosecutors can appeal the acquittal to Italy's highest court. There was no word late Monday if they planned to do so. In Seattle, about a dozen Knox supporters were overjoyed that she has been cleared of the murder conviction. "She's free!" and "We did it!" they shouted at a hotel where they watched the court proceedings on TV. Earlier Monday, Knox tearfully told the court she did not kill her roommate. Knox frequently paused for breath and fought back tears as she spoke in Italian to the eight members of the jury in a packed courtroom, but managed to maintain her composure during the 10minute address. "I've lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way
possible," she said of the 2007 murder of Kercher, who shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. "I'm paying with my life for things that I didn't do." Knox and Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. They both deny wrongdoing. "I never hurt anyone, never in my life," Sollecito said Monday in his own speech to the jury. Hundreds of eager observers gathered outside the courthouse ahead of the highly anticipated announcement, joining television vans that have been camped out for more than a week. One hundred reporters were being allowed into the subterranean courtroom. Observers lined the street leading to the courthouse, taking pictures as the two vans carrying Knox and Sollecito from the prison to the court passed by.

PARIS: An ozone hole five times the size of California opened over the Arctic this spring, matching ozone loss over Antarctica for the first time on record, scientists said on Sunday. Formed by a deep chill over the North Pole, the unprecedented hole at one point shifted over eastern Europe, Russia and Mongolia, exposing populations to higher, but unsustained, levels of ultra-violet light. The Ozone layer comes under seasonal attack in both polar regions in the local winter-spring. Part of the loss comes from man-made chlorinebased compounds, once widely used in refrigerants and consumer aerosols, that are being phased out under the United Nation's Montreal Protocol. But the loss itself is driven by deep cold, which causes water vapour and nitric acid to condense into clouds. Ozone loss over the Antarctic is traditionally much bigger than over the Arctic because of the lower temperatures.

NEW DELHI: Just a day after claiming that he saw Sachin Tendulkar's legs trembling while facing Shoaib Akhtar, Pakistan's former captain Shahid Afridi has now stated that he did not intend to question the Indian batting icon's greatness and was only talking about one incident. "I am not denying what I have said. I have seen that Tendulkar was not at all comfortable against Shoaib in Kolkata Test in 1999. It was Shoaib's first tour of India and he bowled out Sachin without giving him a chance to open his account. He also claimed (Rahul) Dravid's wicket in both the innings," Afridi said from Karachi. "Shoaib was in full form on that tour and had tremendous speed. He terrorised almost all the batsmen in the world at that time. I have seen Sachin trembling as I was fielding at square leg. I am still saying that.
"But this was only one incident. He never spared Shoaib after that. We all have seen what happened in 2003 World Cup," he added. Afridi went on to state that the Indian batsman does not need his certificate. "Sachin is one of the best batsmen and the whole world knows this. He does not need mine or anybody else's certificate. His records speak for him," Afridi said. "The Department of State alerts US citizens to the potential for retaliation against US citizens and interests following the deaths of key figures in the terrorist group al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula on September 30," it said in an official statement said. It may only be Namibia, but the Springboks face a potential flyhalf crisis ahead of their clash against their African neighbours at the North Harbour Stadium on Thursday. While the Boks are giving away no secrets in the build-up to their third match at this year’s Rugby World Cup, with the team taking a light run in front of a few hundred eager spectators in the early morning cold and rain that greeted them, they have been hit by a string of mishaps and injuries which may see a revamped halfback combination for the match against Namibia. Coach Peter de Villiers has made it clear he wants to play his best team against the Namibians, but already he will have to do without lock Victor Matfield and midfielder Jean de Villiers, and
even though Bryan Habana rejoined training, possibly without his services as well if assistant coach Dick Muir is to be believed. Muir intimated that the trio of players who missed the 49-3 thrashing of Fiji on Saturday would also miss the Namibia game, especially given the short turnaround time set for the match. With some bruising battles ahead against Samoa and in the playoff rounds, the Boks won’t want to take any chances against the Namibians, a team they put 100 past the last time these two sides met. With flyhalf Butch James missing training on Monday -- ostensibly because of a hip flexor -- and Pat Lambie running with the injured squad thanks to a wrist injury, it came as equally bad news when incumbent flyhalf Morne Samo to wing in for Wallabies against Russia : Fijian and Wallabies backrower Radike Samo is in line to play on the right wing to cover spots in the backline, in a change Robbie Deans is expected to ring in following injuries in the backline. The Wallabies are short of midfielders - with Rob Horne, Pat McCabe and Kurtley Beale unavailable and Anthony Faingaa in serious doubt.

Fiji have been rocked by news Dominiko Waqaniburotu will miss the Pool D matches against Samoa and Wales through suspension. The flanker has been banned for three weeks for a dangerous tip tackle in Fiji's 49-3 loss to South Africa in Wellington. Waqaniburotu, who has 48 hours to appeal, would also miss the quarter-finals should the Fijians get there. A
statement from RWC organisers read: "With respect to the sanction, the offence was deemed to be mid-range (which has an entry point of six weeks). "However, taking into account mitigating factors including his admission, his excellent disciplinary record and remorse and the absence of aggravating factors, the player was suspended for a period of three weeks."
TAUPO — Despite outplaying Fiji and limiting the physical Pacific Island outfit to a single penalty in their clash at the weekend, Springbok backline coach Dick Muir said yesterday his team had a lot more to offer in the tournament. The Boks travelled to Taupo yesterday to begin preparations for their clash against Namibia on Thursday, which will be hosted at the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, and, fortunately for the coaches, there were no injuries from the weekend’s clash. After early attempts at their tactical kicking game proved unsuccessful against Fiji’s brawny hard- running players, the Boks opted for a more structured approach by retaining possession and putting pressure on Fiji’s defence, which resulted in six tries and a convincing 49-3 victory. Apart from rubber-stamping the Springboks’ status as one of the favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, the performance also proved that the team could be a threat when they played structured rugby — a style they abandoned a few years
ago in favour of their kicking game. If the team maintains this burning form going into Thursday’s clash against the World Cup minnows, there is no doubt they will register another big win. Commenting on the team’s form a few hours after arriving in New Zealand’s adventure hot spot, Muir said: "We showed a good improvement (from the Welsh clash), but there is a lot more to come from this group and we have to head in that direction … we want to keep the momentum going. We had two physical hit-outs (against Wales and Fiji) and we are expecting the same against Namibia and Samoa. " Muir was particularly impressed with the team’s attack and said apart from a few players doing well outside of their regular positions, he was happy with the decision-making on attack. Real overwhelm Ajax to take control of group
