Fiji Diaspora

By Dr. H. Koya

INTRODUCTION

This brief report has been compiled on the request of Fiji Embassy in Washington, DC. Fiji Indians or Indo-Fijians have been immigrating to USA since l930s in ones and twos mainly as tourists or sailors who eventually jumped ship and overstayed in America. A good number also came as serious students for further studies a trend that began in the 50s. Most chose to remain in US after their studies or midway their career, married and settled down here. Some of them became very successful doctors, engineers and professionals. With the passage of time people in this category did not go back home and got very enthralled in the American ways. 1987 Military Coup opened a floodgate There has been an influx of Fiji immigrants after the 1987 military coup in Fiji who came in thousands and sought political asylum in US. A large of number of them settled in in the Bay Area, the Fiji Indians in cities like San Bruno, South San Francisco, Oakland, Hayward, San Jose and Monterey, spreading further to East to Modesto, Stockton and Sacramento, Marysville, Reno and Nevada. Native Fijians settled in great numbers in Marina, San Rafael, Santa Rosa, Napa and Sacramento. Some also settled in Portland and Washington states.

POLARIZATION

Although Fiji Indians have actively sought to participate and include the Native Fijians in various programs, the Natives remain very polarized. Several Fijians are leading Talatalas (priests) and keep the Native Fijians quite united.

Greece pledges €6.6bn in austerity

The Greek government said it passed a new budget backed by its international creditors, including larger deficits than previously forecast, as the country moves closer to securing an 8 billion-euro ($10.7 billion ) aid payout needed to avoid default. PM George Papandreou's Cabinet also passed 6.6 billion euros of austerity measures last night to cut the 2012 deficit to 6.8% of gross domestic product, missing the 6.5% goal previously set with the EU, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank, known as the troika . Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos had previously said Greece would miss the targets and the troika accepted the new budget. The new deficit numbers "should not derail Greece's current negotiations with the troika," Geoffrey Yu, a currency strategist at UBS AG in London, wrote in a note to clients. "Greece pledged to undertake additional spending cuts in order to secure the next aid tranche. We remain of the view that Greece will ultimately receive its current bailout tranche." Greek bonds fell before European FMs gathered on Monday to consider enhancement's to the region's rescue fund.

RUGBY AND SOCCER

Natives have several rugby teams and stage their competitions while Fiji Indians like always are into soccer with scores of teams almost everywhere they reside.

CONTRAST

In contrast to Fiji Indians, Native Fijians are for the most part wage earners. Very few are in high tech industries, education or engineering profession. They also lag behind in business ownership one of the keys to survival in the US environment with tax benefits and small business administration loans. This is an area where I would like to assist our Native Fijians to get involved in a big way.

No Political Manifestos for Fiji elections

Government acknowledges private sector

FIJI NEWS

TWO bushfires along the Queens Road yesterday have sparked concerns with the National Fire Authority urging people to take care when burning rubbish. Around noon, firefighters put out a fire that broke out near a home at Mokosoi Road, Pacific Harbour after uncontrolled burning of rubbish.

There will be no political manifestos come the General Elections in 2014. This was confirmed to FBC News by Sitiveni Raturala from the Office for Strategic Framework for Change. Raturala says manifestos will be planned by political parties based on development approved by the people of Fiji and contained in the National Charter. He says in the past, political parties planned manifestos according to what they could do - but most of the time it was used to buy votes and never fulfilled. Raturala says for the 2014 elections, parties will follow the development goals outlined in the charter which he says have been approved by the people.

Fiji’s private sector has been acknowledged by government for its crucial role in implementing the Buy Fiji Made initiative as a basis for their exported products. Minister for Trade and Commerce Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the private sector holds the key to growing Fiji’s export base and this is a fundamental and integral part of the initiative. "I would like to acknowledge the input by the private sector and the Fijian companies to be the driving force of the Buy Fijian Made initiative," he said while opening the Top Executive (TOPEX) meeting of the Fiji

Employers and Commerce Federation at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi yesterday. Sayed Khaiyum said a month has been dedicated to the initiative and a lot of awareness towards the initiative will be beefed up. "November has been the month earmarked for Buy Fiji and you will see a lot of campaign in that respect which will see the final stages of establishing the criteria as to who will be able to get access to those labels and that should be done in the next couple of weeks." He also urged all companies and business houses to participate in the campaign.

LOS ANGELES The Emmy Awards began on a controversial note when it was revealed that a taped comedy routine by Alec Baldwin for the show was cut from the telecast because it contained a joke about the News Corp phone hacking scandal. The actor was to be part of an opening video for Sunday (yesterday Fiji Time) night's ceremony airing on Fox, a News Corp-owned network. But he tweeted before the awards that the network had killed his joke about the hacking scandal in Britain involving the now-closed News of the World tabloid.

sel became controversial when she revealed later that she was raped by the lawyer in June. But then Balaggan withdrew her statement against Chaudhry saying she was coerced by senior government officials into making those allegations in exchange for an acquittal from her drug smuggling charges. Following her revelations, Balaggan was then charged with one count of giving false information to a public officer, once again represented by Chaudhry. While ruling on her bail application pending trial, the court stated that Balaggan was at flight risk if granted bail with any conditions

and that she would say anything without regard to truth or falsity if it will secure her bail or her acquittal on the drug charges at trial. It said when the prosecution opines that Balaggan will obtain false documents and travel to Australia if granted bail; they accepted that this is likely to happen given her attempts at manipulating investigative and judicial processes from the time of her arrest until the date of this judgement. However, the court of appeal judges also suggested that her drug smuggling trial be listed to commence within weeks rather than within months.

Three Police Commissioners from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea have confirmed their participation to attend the Police Commissioners Conference on March 23 in Suva, Fiji. Police Commissioner Brigadier General IowaneNaivalurua told FijiLive that the first delegates to the conference would be arriving today. Brigadier General Naivalurua also said that there are nine items on the agenda but did not reveal further. “After the Commissioners Conference reports will be tabled to the senior officials at the MSG,” said Naivalurua.

sentence for Balaggan. He added that he is still yet to find instances in previous cases where a person was charged for withdrawing their complaint. Balaggan pleaded guilty to withdrawing her complaint made earlier this year against Chaudhry. However, she withdrew her complaint and then soon after released a statement where she highlighted the reasons behind her withdrawal. In her explanation, Balaggan revealed she was coerced by senior officials of government. She also revealed that she had been approached by a high ranking police officer to re-think her decision to withdraw her complaint made against Chaudhry.

the stroke of half-time. The defending champions started the second half as they had ended the first and it wasn't long before Francois Steyn was dotting down for the Springboks' third try. Danie Rossouw, who was a dynamo with the ball, got across the advantage line but it was the neat chip kick by Heinrich Brussow that set up the score. Morne Steyn then got in on the act to secure the bonus point for the Springboks before Naipolioni Nalaga bombed a try for Fiji and it was Mtawarira and Rossouw who finished off the rout.

Indian national pleads for leniency

Investment Fiji in its efforts to better assist potential foreign and local investors is accommodating Mandarin, Korean and Japanese translations on its current website. Important information pertaining to investment opportunities available; steps of registering a business; export information; amongst others have all been translated into the aforementioned languages. Investment Fiji, chief executive Ravuni Uluilakeba, says “For businesses in Fiji to retain their competitive edge in the future, it is key that we give serious consideration to multilingual websites. “The internet is no longer the English speaker’s domain and statistics show that four of the top five internet using nations in the world are non-English speak-

ing. Investment Fiji is here to ensure that the maximum investment output is achieved in a quick span, hence the need to accommodate these three languages,” he said. Investment Fiji believes that this change presents a great opportunity as accommodating different languages will allow more foreign investment into Fiji. A cross cultural communication will allow more foreign interest in Fiji especially from countries like Japan, China and Korea. Investment Fiji has facilitated a number of enquiries from these countries over the last five years and the need to accommodate their language on the website is important and beneficial, given the increasing number of enquiries received.

NEW YORK -- A magnitude-7.2 earthquake rattled Fiji in the Pacific Ocean on Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. No tsunami warning was issued, and no damage or casualties were immediately reported. The 7:30 a.m. (1930 GMT Thursday) quake was deep, some 368.5 miles (593 kilometers) below the surface, the USGS said. The USGS said the quake hit some 264 miles (425 kilometers) west of Nuku'alofa, Tonga, and 281 miles (453 kilometers) southeast of Suva, Fiji.

Indian national Muskan Balaggan, 21, has pleaded to the Suva Magistrate Court for leniency when it reaches a suitable punishment for her. Charged with one count of giving false information to a public servant, Balaggan appeared before Magistrate Nanise Ratakele this afternoon for mitigation. Her lawyer, Rajendra Chaudhry on behalf of the Indian national said there was no dishonesty offence in the case. Chaudhry said this matter was simply a case of someone making a complaint and then withdrawing that complaint. He said there was no aggravating factor whatsoever that could call for a custodial

South Africa sent a message to their World Cup rivals not to write them off just yet with a dominant 493 victory over Fiji in Wellington on Saturday. The defending champions outscored the Pacific Islanders six tries-to-nil and were in charge of the contest from the 26th minute when prop Gurthro Steenkamp dived over for the opening try. Jaque Fourie capped a fine allround performance with another before the break to give the Springboks a comfortable 21-3 halftime lead before Francois Steyn, Morne Steyn, Tendai Mtawarira and

Danie Rossouw scored in the second spell as the South Africans ran the Fijians ragged. The Springboks did not get off to the best start as Morne Steyn missed a straightforward penalty inside the opening two minutes then the ball was knocked on in a drive from a five-metre lineout. Fiji tested the Springboks defence earlywith Dominiko Maiwiriwiri Waqaniburotu particularly prominent with ball in hand. But South Africa's defence stood firm and too often Fiji's final pass failed to stick and opportunities went beg-

ging. The first points eventually came in the 11th minute with a mammoth 57-metre penalty from Francois Steyn. South Africa could not benefit from the Pacific Islanders indiscipline at the breakdown as Steenkamp then Schalk Burger were held up just short after a lineout drive. Fiji finally got on the board - with what turned out to be their only points of the night - with a Seremaia Bai penalty on 20 minutes. But South Africa, who were without the injured Victor Matfield, Jean de Villiers and Bryan Habana, took charge from then on.

Steenkamp's try in the 26th minute was sparked by a good surging run from Francois Steyn, who looked to have blown an overlap before the ball was shipped out to the big loosehead prop. Morne Steyn added the conversion then slotted a penalty when Fiji infringed at the breakdown again. Fourie showed good finishing skills to dot down in the corner in the 35th minute after Sakiusa Matadigo bombed yet another high ball. But Morne Steyn could not add the extras then missed another penalty before slotting a three-pointer on

Ministry misses 1per cent target

CLOSE to 80,000 people remain infected in Fiji with lymphatic filariasis commonly known as "Elephantiasis" or waqaqa as the Health Ministry launched its mass drug administration (MDA) of the anti-filariasis tablets to eradicate the disease. The MDA program, launched by Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma yesterday, started in Fiji in 2002 and was conducted for five years. And it was later revealed in a survey in 2007 that the prevalence fell from 16.6 per cent in 2001 to 9.5 per cent in 2007. "Filariasis is a dreadful, disfiguring disease that has affected our population for many years. This is clearly visible with the grotesque pictures that are distributed. The disfigurement and disabilities that are associated are a consequence of not taking the antifilarial tablets that is given out every year," Dr Sharma said. He said the recommended prevalence was below 1 per cent but this had not

been achieved. "The drugs that are taken will not only kill the parasite or worm in our body but will also provide some protection from re-entry of the worm into the body for some time," Dr Sharma said. "The worm enters the body through the bite of an infected mosquito, which immediately causes no obvious sign that one has the disease. "Every person above the age of two years old needs to take these drugs to break the transmission of this disease from person to person." The Western Division, according to the ministry is free of the disease. Tablets will be distributed in the Central Division (Suva, Rewa, Navua, Tailevu, Naitasiri), parts of the Eastern Division (Kadavu, Lomaiviti and Lau groups) and the Northern Division (Macuata, Cakaudrove, Bua and Taveuni). While tablets will be available at health centres, teams will make house-to-house calls.

Amidst China’s growing presence into the Pacific, it has announced financial assistance to Fiji of 40 million RMB. This was announced by the President of China Hu Jintao in a bilateral meeting with the President of Fiji Ratu Epeli Nailatikau last month in Shenzhen. Jintao said China fully recognised the importance of Fiji’s position among other Pacific Island Countries and that Fiji was the first Pacific country to establish diplomatic ties with China. He said China respected the sovereignty of a country and its territorial integrity irrespective of its size and status.

A recent highlevel government delegation that visited China recently was able to draw a number of large investors who have expressed their interest in setting up businesses in Fiji," she said. Speaking at the Fiji Economy Update held at the Novotel Nadi last week, Ms Vakaloloma said it was also important to note that high liquidity could be attributed to government substantially reducing domestic borrowings. "Whereas government borrowed around $450 million from the domestic market last year, for 2011 this has been reduced to around $130 million as bulk of our financing has been sourced from abroad through the global bond," Ms Vakaloloma explained. Government borrowed $US250 million ($F461m)through the issue of bonds in March this year, of which $US150 million ($F276m) was used to pay off the bonds that were floated in 2006, and US$100 million ($185m) on capital works.

ADVERTISING BAN ON BABY FOOD

Marketing controls on food for infants and young children will come into effect from Friday. The Health Ministry together with the Consumer Council of Fiji will keep a close eye on labels that are a must for baby food. Health spokesperson Prisilla Govind told FBC News all infant food that do not carry proper labels will be seized. "The regulations apply to products imported into, packed in, or produced and processed in Fiji for domestic distribution and consumption or export or re-export. It prohibits the promotion, marketing, and advertising of all commercial infant formula drinks and food products, including feeding bottles, teats and pacifiers." New laws also ban companies producing baby milk from any form of sponsorship.

MARKED improvements in foreign reserves and the recent payment of $US150 million ($F276m) global bond combined with the upward revision of Fiji's credit rating should see a boost in foreign investment. Deputy secretary for Finance Kelera Vakaloloma said this, plus an increase in foreign investor interest from Asia and the Americas was a positive sign of economic recovery. "With marked improvement in our foreign reserves, now over $1.6 billion, the prospects for growth oriented policies are more viable and much easier to implement," she said. Ms Vakaloloma said recent trade missions to Fiji by prospective foreign investors from Canada, Thailand, China and the US showed investor confidence was building. "Contrary to the pessimistic view that government's efforts to entice Chinese investors will not materialise, new businesses as a result of these missions are already springing up like the Min Du Restaurant and

Woman Police Constable Sadamma told the women that the failure to report crime which included defilement, sexual abuse, child abuse and domestic violence, was a crime itself. WPC Sadamma said in some communities, culture and tradition acted as a barrier. "It is very common in the Indo-Fijian community to not report cases because of several reasons and one of it is the tight culture," WPC Sadamma said. "In many cases relating to sexual abuse, the perpetrator is known to the victim, and the family considers it right not to tarnish the family and perpetrator's name by reporting the

ATTACKS DRAW WARNING FROM NAIVALURUA PEOPLE have been warned that assaulting a police officer is a serious offence. The Fiji Police Force sounded the warning yesterday following recent incidents where police officers were assaulted while executing their duties. A police officer was assaulted in t e Southern Division and another in the Northern Division in the past two weeks. Both were injured. Police Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said police officers were there to help members of the public "and they are your friends who will help you in your times of need". Brig-Gen Naivalurua said it was also important to remember that police officers had the right to defend themselves while being attacked. A woman police officer suffered injuries to her eyes when she was assaulted by two youths along Khalsa Road, Nasinu last Friday.

crime," she said. "The family chose to reconcile the matter at home, however, little do they realise that failing to report the matter to police can lead to the offence happening again in the future. "Report the matter to the police, and the police will address the matter professionally. We assure nobody will be subjected to defamation and justice will be brought to the victim." She said failure to report such sensitive issues would only lead to victims suffering in silence and perpetrators would feel encouraged to commit the offence again. The women at the program were also provided with free medical checks, which included blood pressure and glucose level tests.

The Australian High Commission visa service opened its Suva office on Monday. The centre, a first for the Pacific, was launched and attended by dignitaries from national and international stakeholders. The centre is outsourced by global telecommunications company TT services. Australian acting High Commissioner Kirsty McNeil officiated at the opening and said it was a significant event. “This event shows our commitment to our client. We value our clients and guests’ feedback which this office is a reflection off. This is the first for the Pacific. “This will be the first of two offices we will set up in Fiji. The other will opened in Lautoka shortly.” “Be it consultation, visa application filing, preparing prospective immigrants for personal interview.

Women wash in sea water

THE lack of proper water supply experienced on an island in Macuata has forced women to wash their utensils and clothes in the sea. Five families at Macuatai-Wai have no choice but to depend on rainwater for drinking. Villager Ratu Jone Matanababa said the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) had installed a tank with piping system in 2009 but the pressure from the source was too low to pump water to households. "The five families are entirely dependent on rainwater because the water supply from the tank is too low to cater for the villagers," Ratu Jone said. "It can take villagers about half an hour to fill a 500 millilitre Coke bottle from their taps because of the low pressure," he said. "The situation

here has seen women washing their dishes and clothes in the sea." Ratu Jone said villagers desperately needed assistance because they were affected for the past eight months. "We are seeking assistance and we hope someone will assist us with our water supply so we can continue with our daily work normally," he said. In response, WAF media liaison officer Maika Nagalu said their rural water supply officers visited the island last week to rectify the problem. "Water supply has been restored on the island since last week and we ask villagers to use water wisely because the tank only has a capacity of 6,500 liters which is not enough for the households in the village," he said.

Subsidies even for those spending over Rs 32 a day

NEW DELHI : Seeking to counter the perception of insensitivity, the government and the Planning Commission came together to remove caps on the number of poor an individual state can have and formally de-linked subsidies from the income threshold, but did not agree to change its definition of poverty, at least immediately. The stand, to be articulated shortly in the Supreme Court, has been shaped more by political needs of a regime already under pressure on the twin issues of corruption and inflation. Faced with a furore over the Rs 32 poverty line, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and rural development minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters that states would not be required to peg the number of beneficiaries of Centre's welfare schemes. A census to identify people living below the poverty line (BPL census) is underway and the plan was to restrict handouts to only a limited number in every state. The formal de-coupling of poverty and entitlements such as subsidized food, fuel and fertilizer is significant because of indications that a move was on to reduce the subsidy burden. The clarification marks the triumph of pragmatic politics over an approach that focused on fiscal consolidation.

'IAF expanding wings beyond Pakistan and China'

NEW DELHI: India is gradually building powerful military capabilities in tune with its expanding geopolitical interests, which are no longer limited to the swathe stretching from the Persian Gulf to Malacca Strait, even as the eastern and western fronts are being strengthened to deter the twin Pakistan-China threat. After the over Rs 3,00,000 crore plan to build a potent three-dimensional Indian Navy for the future, reported by TOI last month, it was IAF's turn on Monday to assert it was on the path to transform into a true aerospace power with the capability to rapidly deploy and operate around the globe. "No other air force has attempted to modernize at such a fast pace in such a short span of 15 years," said Air Chief Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne, indicating a doctrinal shift in the run-up to IAF's 79th anniversary on October 8. But he was quick to emphasize this did not mean "an expeditionary force" on the lines of the US Air Force. "We are not going to fight other people's wars. But yes, IAF must have the wherewithal to meet the requirements wherever India's strategic interests lie," said the IAF chief. As for the two-front challenge,

apart from progressively basing Sukhoi-30MKI fighters and missile squadrons in the two theatres, the plan also includes upgrading the Nyoma advanced landing ground in eastern Ladakh, located 23km from the LAC with China at an altitude of 13,300 feet. "We want a 12,000feet runway capable of handling fighters as well as transport aircraft at Nyoma. It will give us both defensive and offensive options. After being cleared by the defence ministry, it's now going to the Cabinet Committee on Security," said Browne. Similarly, learning lessons from the 1999 conflict with Pakistan, the Kargil airstrip will be extended to ensure strategic airlift aircraft like C-17 Globemaster-III and C-130J 'Super Hercules' as well as fighters can operate from there. Moreover, the next six C-130Js, after the first six procured for the Hindon airbase for $1.2 billion, will be based at Charbatia (Orissa) for the eastern sector. Armed with perspective plans till 2027, IAF is looking at a combat fleet of 250-300 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, 126-200 medium multi-role fighter aircraft and 270 Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, as also over 100 upgraded MiG-29s and Mirage-2000s.

Bigg Boss to rake up Charles Sobhraj's buried past

KATHMANDU: On Tuesday morning, a day after her daughter Nihita Biswas Sobhraj made her debut on Color TV's reality show Bigg Boss and defended her husband Charles Sobhraj, the alleged serial killer of yesteryear, Shakuntala Thapa received a congratulatory phone call from an unexpected caller. It was from Bishwo Lal Shrestha, a former policeman turned lawyer who was hired by the family of Connie Jo Bronzich, the American backpacker who was killed in 1975 and whose murder was pinned on Sobhraj almost three decades later by Nepal's police and judiciary. Shrestha had been a police officer when the murder occurred in 1975 and says he recognised Sobhraj, who had been living in Kathmandu at that time posing as a Dutch tourist. In 2003, when Sobhraj was seen in Kathmandu and arrested from a casino, he says Shrestha played a key

role in getting him convicted by liaising with a former Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg, who sent the Nepali authorities a document described as Sobhraj's confession to murder before Indian authorities in New Delhi. It is not just Shrestha who has an interest in Bigg Boss to see how contestant number four Nihita conducts herself and defends Sobhraj. She has already mentioned that the reports of mass serial killings against him are just rumours and that in many of the countries where he is said to have committed the murders, there is not even any police complaint filed against him. Indeed, even in India, where Sobhraj's crimes were the most well-documented, he was jailed only for lesser crimes like robbery and forgery with all murder charges being turned down by the judges for lack of evidence.

Indian committing crime abroad can be tried in India : SC

NEW DELHI: An Indian citizen who has committed a crime abroad can be prosecuted in the country but the trial cannot commence beyond the cognisance stage without prior sanction of the government, the Supreme Court has held. A bench comprising justices Altamas Kabir, Cyriac Joseph and S S Nijjar rejected the plea of NRI Thota Venkateswarlu that the trial court in Andhra Pradesh cannot take cognisance of a complaint of harassment, dowry

demands and criminal intimidation lodged by his wife, as the couple were living in Botswana. The NRI's wife Parvathareddy Suneetha returned from Botswana and lodged the complaint with the police which filed a charge sheet in the court of the additional munsif magistrate, Addanki, Prakasham district against her husband and other relatives. The apex court said, "The language of Section 188 CrPC is quite clear that when an offence is committed outside India by a citizen

of India, he may be dealt with in respect of such offences as if they had been committed in India. "The proviso, however, indicates that such offences could be inquired into or tried only after having obtained the previous sanction of the central government." Justice Kabir said Section 188 is a fetter on the powers of the investigating authority to inquire into offence to the extent that it can be done only with the previous sanction of the central government.

The state government now plans to rethink the campaign, and incentivize the birth of a third child-but only if it is a girl. The idea is to narrow the state's child sex ratio, among the worst in the country at 883 girls for every 1,000 boys. The national average is 914:1,000. The proposal will soon come to the cabinet. It seeks to reward couples who give birth to a third child, a girl, by taking care of her education and giving other financial rewards on the lines of those being offered under the Rajmata Jijau Malnutrition Free Maharashtra programme. The existing laws will be tweaked to ensure government employees or elected representatives at all levels, including the gram panchayats, are not disqualified for giving birth to a third girl child.

FAISALABAD: Two overloaded donkey driven carts creating hurdles for the smooth flow of traffic at busy Rajbah Road and needs the attention of concerned authorities.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that his government is ready to start parleys with Taliban, but evaded questions whether the reconciliation would include the Haqqani faction. For the first time, Gilani dropped his earlier pre-condition of militants giving up arms before any talks, but warned that if the parleys fail to work, the military will launch operations in the tribal areas. "If negotiations fail to work, the government will launch military operations in the tribal areas," he told a small group of journalists at his residence in Lahore last night. Gilani provided details about how the talks would be conducted for the first time, days after a meeting of Pakistan's political parties called for peace talks to end unrest in the militancy-hit tribal belt. "We will not ask them (militants) to disarm

before the negotiations since this is against the tribal culture. However, the political agents (government administrators in the tribal regions) will ask them to decommission themselves," he was quoted as saying in media reports today. The proposed talks will be monitored by a parliamentary committee to ensure transparency and civilian oversight of the process, he said. "We want to give peace a chance now...The national interest is above everything, we will give people a chance to reconcile." Asked whether the Haqqani network - blamed by the US for high-profile terror attacks in Afghanistan - would be part of the reconciliation, Gilani evaded a direct answer and said a parliamentary committee would implement resolutions passed on such issues by parliament and the All Parties Conference (APC) that was held on September 29.

US needs to do many things in war on terror: Hina Rabbani Khar

WASHINGTON: Foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Sunday fought back allegations that Pakistan had not done enough against extremists, reminding that the "Frankenstein" of terrorism in the Af-Pak region was financed by the US but her country had been left alone to sort out the mess. Khar said the war against terrorism was being fought in the region with joint cooperation between the US and Pakistan,

and singling out Islamabad's role was being "biased". Hitting back at allegations that Pakistan had not done enough in the war on terror, she said even Washington needed to do certain things. "We strongly deny that. We feel that this is completely incorrect. That this is what could be called, you know, a biased statement. We feel that we

are the ones who have reacted the most," Khar told CNN, denying allegations that Pakistan is not taking action against groups that use tribal areas as safe havens and attack Americans, westerners and Indians across the border. She said Pakistanis were the ones who had sacrificed the most, fighting it out on the ground on a daily

Taseer's killer sentenced to death

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's antiterrorism court sentenced to death on Saturday the elite police guard who shot dead the former governor of Punjab Salman Taseer early this year. Taseer had been calling for reform of Pakistan's harsh blasphemy law. Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, one of Taseer's elite police guards, assassinated the governor for his liberal and progressive views on January 4, when he was about to get into his car outside a restaurant in Islamabad. Taseer's had called Pakistan's draconian blasphemy law --"a black law". His murder has put the country's liberal elite on the

defensive. But what came afterwards was perhaps even more alarming: not a single cleric was ready to lead Taseer funeral prayers, dozens of lawyers showered roses on Qadri when he was first produced in the court, thousands of people demonstrated in his defence while most of the politicians could not openly condemn the murder. Mr Qadri's trial, which began a month after the killing, was held in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail and media was barred from covering the proceedings. Confessing that nobody intimidated him for Taseer's killing, Qadri told the court that the governor had criti-

Pakistan denies ISI link to Afghan killing

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has denied the Afghan government's claim that the country's spy agency was involved in the assassination of Afghanistan's envoy for Taliban peace talks. Pakistan's foreign ministry called the allegation baseless and irresponsible in a statement issued on Sunday. It called the envoy, former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, Pakistan's friend. Afghan interior minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi claimed in parliament on Saturday that Pakistan's InterServices Intelligence agency was involved in the suicide bombing that killed Rabbani.

cized the blasphemy law and he deserved to be killed. The ATC judge Pervez Ali Shah said that no one could be given the license to kill someone on any condition. Therefore, the killer cannot be pardoned as he has committed a heinous crime, the judge said before awarding two times death sentence to Mr Qadri. Under Pakistani law, Qadri has the right to appeal within seven days against the verdict. One of Qadri's lawyers, Raja Shuja-ur-Rehman, said the defence would appeal the verdict. "We are not satisfied with the court's verdict, and we will file an appeal against it," he said.

Dreaded militant hit squad Khurasan goes rogue in Pak

One of his executioners - members of an elite militant hit squad zooms a camera in on his severed head and body parts for a video later distributed in street markets as a warning. Taliban and the Haqqani network picked the most ruthless fighters from their ranks in 2009 to form the Khurasan unit, for a special mission. The Obama administration was escalating drone strikes on militants and something had to be done to stop it. So the Khurasan were deployed to hunt down and eliminate anyone suspected of helping the Americans or their Pakistani government and military allies.

basis. "I would completely deny that," Khar said when pointed out that Pakistan has never fought against the Haqqani faction. "Let me also very humbly say that it takes two to tango. There are many things that the US would have to do," Khar said in response to a question. Khar said the Frankenstein of terrorism in the region was not created by Pakistan, rather it was financed and assisted by several world powers including the US.

Mullah Omar is beyond Pakistani control: Musharraf

Claiming that Pakistan should tell US that it has compulsions of "national interest" in not cracking down on the Haqqani network, Musharraf told Telegraph that Omar was semi-literate and not aware of issues of the world.

‘Survivor: South Pacific’ preview: Cochran in the crosshairs 10

We have one final look at “Survivor: South Pacific” before its new episode on Wednesday night, and there is really only one question worth asking as a result — is John Cochran actually going to survive another week? Clearly, our Harvard law student is in the most danger this week thanks to him being a weak player in challenges, and more than anything else he just needs a week to stick around camp so that people can see he is a valuable person to have around. (If his tribe does lose, his best move may either be to try and take out an emotional Dawn, an older Papa Bear, or a major threat in Ozzy.) Meanwhile, the preview below and everything we have seen so far suggests that there are three people in real jeopardy over on Upolo: -Brandon: If people find out that he has already lied about his background in this game, he’s toast — no one will ever trust him again. -Christine: She’s constantly on an idol hunt, and it puts a major target on her back (unless she actual-

It is a bit of a shame, if for no other reason than that he could really help people get further if they side with him. Who do you think is in the most danger?

Oil company idles production in southern Colombia field, citing disruptions by worker protests

A petroleum company in Colombia has halted pumping of 225,000 barrels of oil a day because union workers protesting for pay raises and better health care have blocked roads in the region. Canada-based Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. says the field that was idled Tuesday in southern Colombia accounts for a quarter of the South American nation’s oil production. The operation was shut down for a day and a half in mid-July because of worker protests. The workers’ union is demanding the company increase wages and improve working conditions and health care. Pacific Rubiales operates the field jointly with Colombia’s state oil company, Ecopetrol. About 12,000 people work in the field. Copyright 2011 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The New Zealand Dollar traded relatively flat following data showing a worse-than-expected 2 nd quarter current account deficit for the South Pacific island nation. In spite of the data missing expectations, NZDUSD failed to breach support at 0.8207 and continues to trend near this support level as of 02:25 GMT on Sept. 21. The Relative Strength Indicator remained well within the 30 to 70 range, reflecting a lack of strong buying or selling of the currency. The 2 nd quarter current account balance was -NZ$0.921 billion compared to the median prediction of -NZ$0.671 billion in a Bloomberg survey. This figure brought the cumulative current account deficit for the year to June to 3.7 percent of GDP. The main contributor to the deficit was the net income from abroad balance – at -NZ$2.698 billion – which more than offset a positive goods and services balance driven by strong dairy and agricultural exports. The lack of directional momentum of the Kiwi since the

The South Pacific island of Tonga will soon get its first solar power plant, thanks to a bit of help from its neighbor to the south. The New Zealand government has announced that it will provide $7.9 million toward the solar project. The project, which we spotted on the Renewable Energy Magazine site, is a public-private partnership with Meridian Energy, Tonga Power Limited and the Tongan government that will result in a 1 megawatt solar power plant. Construction is expect to start by the end of this year. Estimates are it will meet 4 percent of Tonga’s power needs while offseting 470,000 liters of diesel per year. The nation of Tonga includes 169 islands across 700,000 square miles, although just 36 of the islands are inhabited, according to the CIA World Factbook. A July 2011 estimate put the population at 105,916 residents. Tonga exports include fish, vanilla, kava and squash, primarily to New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Japan and the United States.

This week, Phoenix Productions revival of South Pacific heads into its second week at Count Basie and Much Ado About Nothing continues at Two River Theater. South Pacific is presented by Phoenix Productions, a community theater company based in Red Bank, NJ. A nonprofit community theater formed in 1987, Phoenix Productions specializes in producing Broadway revivals at a modest cost so that families can attend and introduce children to the theater. For performers, Phoenix allows actors from all over a chance to work in a full scale production at a renowned theater. They have produced more than 100 revivals of Broadway musicals over the past two decades. Rodgers and

Hammerstein’s South Pacific is considered to be one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. The original first wowed audiences in 1949, and has continued to charm audiences of many generations for decades. This classic production is set on a tropical island during World War ll. It paints a picture of what it is like to be an American stationed in a different culture during war time. The musical combines all of the elements needed for a timeless story: romance, war, race, and of course, love. The story gives us a peek into the lives of two ordinary couples and how life as they know it is changed by the realities of war and prejudice. The play’s score is one of the most popular; with memorable songs

SYDNEY, Australia -- New Zealand has joined the growing list of countries that have refused to participate in United Nations’ antiracism conference in New York this week. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully formally withdrew Sept. 16 from representing the South Pacific nation at the 10-year anniversary of the original World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa, which degenerated into an anti-Israel fest. "We remain concerned that the commemoration of the 2001 Durban Declaration could reopen the offensive and anti-Semitic debates which undermined the original world conference,” McCully said. “For these reasons, we have decided not to participate.” New Zealand, which also withdrew from the Durban Review Conference in 2009, joins the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Israel and the United States in opting out of the event.

data release reflects overall market uncertainty prior to the FOMC Interest Rate Decision later on Sept. 21. While the Fed is expected to keep rates at current near-zero levels, markets will be closely monitoring the accompanying statement for signs of further monetary stimulus. Any indication of stimulus (or lack thereof) will affect overall risk sentiment and drive “risky” currencies such as the Kiwi. Over the longer term, NZDUSD moves will continue to be affected by growth prospects in Asia and the outlook for interest rates. Increasing signs of a slowdown in New Zealand’s main export markets – with the IMF revising down its forecasts for Chinese GDP growth for 2011 and 2012 – is expected to weigh on the Kiwi. At the same time, recent data pointing to a slow recovery from the February earthquake, and an RBNZ in no hurry to raise interest rates this year, will continue to place pressure on the New Zealand Dollar.

With another loss, Pacific U. football still looking for first win in 20 years

With Saturday's loss in Claremont, California, the Pacific University Boxers football team is now 0-3 on the 2011 season and 0-12 in the past two years combined. Pacific wasn't able to get things in sync over the weekend, ultimately falling to the Claremont-MuddScripps for the second year in a row, this time to the tune of a 28-9 clubbing. Pacific receiver Jordan Fukumoto was owner the lone Boxers highlight of the day, moving into second in the school's record books (longest reception) with an 87-yard touchdown catch thrown by QB T.C. Campbell. Fukumoto went on to lead the squad with 4 catches and a season-high 137 yards receiving. Campbell had limited success throwing the ball, completing 14 of 26 passes for 191 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The inability of the running game to net many positive yards ultimately doomed the Pacific offense, forcing them to take the ball to air against a quality pass defense. The Pacific rushing defense didn't fare much better, allowing a staggering 257 yards on the ground, including 118 rushing yards and three rushing downs by Claremont QB Patrick Rooney. The Muslim world is on the brink of change or disaster INTERFAITH

By Iftekhar Hai The culmination of one full month of fasting by Muslims during Ramadan is called Eid ul Fitr, a day marked by jubilation, parties and family get-togethers. This year it was celebrated on two days, Aug. 30 and 31. Why? Because one section of Muslim traditionalists said the moon was not visible by human eye at the time of the original celebration, and other traditionalists said, based on scientific calculations, the moon could be seen. Two opinions, hence two Eids. Islam is not a homogeneous religion. My family was among an estimated 6,000 people who came to observe Eid at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds on Aug. 31. There was much jubilation, but I joined in serious talk about reforms and the introduction of pluralism, democracy and secular governments. These 10 years have been bad news

for us, a gentleman said: "Do you know, according to a Homeland Security report, there have been 30 terrorist attacks and plots by homegrown jihadists on U.S. soil since 9/11"? Another person said, "One of the most striking elements of today's threat picture is that plots to attack America increasingly involve American residents and citizens. What can we do?" A third remarked, "Frankly speaking, we should get rid of the radical thinking from not only among ourselves, but also give serious thought to interfaith education. Yes, we Muslims should also learn about different religions and appreciate the good in them." "Why can't we teach about our Constitution and Bill of Rights in Islamic Schools of America?" a gentleman in a suit shouted. "There are more Islamic principles in America than there are in Muslim countries. Pluralism and democracy are also

part of Quranic teachings, but we do not hear this from our religious clergy." Remember what happened in Pakistan: A suicide bomber attacked a mosque during the Holy Month when Muslims were praying, killing 80 people and injuring another 120. Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya and Iraq -- all these nations are in turmoil. They cannot decide or rule peacefully. Somalia is a failed state where hundreds and thousands of people

are starving to death. Afghanistan is no different. The Muslim world needs reforms, and this Arab Spring is giving us an opportunity to do something about it. "If we do not act now, one more incident like 9/11 and we will end up in camps like the Japanese," added a gentleman. We must stop demonizing others: "We have carried a lot of cultural and religious baggage when we migrated to America from our country of origin," a young man said. "We call every non-Muslim a nonbeliever or kafir (infidel). We think we have a lock on truth. The Holy Scriptures of the nonMuslims are all corrupted or changed, we are taught." This kind of sermon is common all over the Islamic world. Growing up in India, I heard it. When I migrated to Pakistan, the Islamists never said that people of other faiths will also end up in heaven. As discussion turned to pluralism and secular governments, our group

11

grew bigger. We thought how we could best serve our community in America as well as influence events and governments in the Muslim countries that are teetering on the brink of lawlessness, anarchy and corruption. One Turkish gentleman, listening to our heated conversation, remarked, "Muslims should adopt a secular government and honor every religious sect. Pluralism must also be talked from the pulpits, and we should train our Imams to preach tolerance and respect." The time is ripe for American Muslim organizations to work closely with the State Department and the leaders of democratic movements in the Arab world to bring about this kind of change. Is anybody listening in Washington? IFTEKHAR HAI is president of United Muslims of America Interfaith Alliance, a pioneer in interfaith peace-building movement. He wrote this for this newspaper.

A new complex for Islamic School in the planning

It is the vision of a leader that impels and drives the community to make achievements and strive to realize the goals. “No vision, no success,” is the old adage. Currently AML has a three year plan as its short term goal for a welfare office to serve needy families with local government assistance, after school and summer school program and involvement with Hayward City Council to undertake projects that would boost AML’s credibility. AML’s long term goal is to acquire a property in Hayward for an Islamic School for higher studies. Speaking of the Zanana League, Ms. Abida Khan said that led by its current president Jasmin Khan, the Zanana wing is doing a great job and helps raise more money than the men and youth do. She said that AML is fortunate to have a highly qualified Muslim sister Sayeda Huma Qadiri who conducts Islamic classes for women. Said during Ramazan about 8 girls and 9 boys were most regular at Tarawi prayers some of whom also set in Iteqaaf (last 10 days of complete dedication at the mosque) and participation in the Lailatul Qadr Night. They were recognized at the Eid dinner.

No doubt people who donated freely at a simple Eid dinner hosted by Alameda Muslim League Saturday Sept 24, 2011, were motivated by their religious inspirations but it also meant a good organization and planning. The A Street, Hayward-based AML, largely Fiji Muslims, has a well-defined plan with published figures as to how much they raise each year how the funds are used that many do not like to make public. The AML revealed the figures as published in their annual Eid Magazine as well displayed the report on screen projection at last night Eid dinner held at the Buddhist Church, Alvarado Rd., Union City that attracted approximately 200 people.

In an after the event interview the current president Amjad Khan explained that the current A street site valued $1.1 Million and AML’s Eid Mubarak Magazine features full financial report that many non-profits hesitate to reveal talks about a three-year plan. Mortgage payment towards principle alone was $35, 000

LEADERSHIP AND SPOUSE

AML youth receive awards for achievement in their religious studies. AML president Amjad Khan announcing award winners.

The success story does not rest solely on how the ladies’ or youth wing are but great deal support comes from a good sousethat is willing to rally behind a husband. AML president Amjad Khan’s wife Abida an excellent example how a spouse should be right behind her husband to ensure success in what does. Many leaders fail for the lack of support from spouse who lack the enthusiasm to give and unreserved support to her man. In Islam, it is a source of divine blessings to land such support as opposed to taking a back seat, bicker, bad mouth and complain. AML with its clearly defined goals to teach and train the youth, the future

Gaddafi son denies Interpol allegations

WORLD NEWS

October 2011

NEW DELHI: Nine out of 10 women in Afghanistan are worried about the Taliban returning to power as it could risk the gains they have made in the past 10 years, a survey by NGO ActionAid has found. "In a poll conducted among 1,000 women across Afghanistan, 66 percent said they feel safer now than they did 10 years ago, while 72 percent believed their lives are better now than 10 years ago," the survey, released Monday, said in the wake of the current reconciliation process with the Taliban. "Of those who fear a return of the Taliban, 1 in 5 cited their daughters' education as the main concern," the survey report said. Oct 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the US and British forces' intervention in

Afghanistan. For experts working with the women of the war-ravaged territory, their inclusion in policymaking has been the major concern till now. "All parties involved must make public statements that the equal rights for men and women that are enshrined in the Afghan constitution - including women's right to education, to work, and to participate in public life - are sacred and will never be overturned," said Belinda Calaguas, director of policy of ActionAid. The NGO's Afghanistan country director, P.V. Krishnan said: "If Afghan women are excluded from decision-making on the future of their country, we risk not only sacrificing the gains made for women over the past ten years.

The Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation will be conferred on the 76-year-old Dalai Lama at the annual Satyagraha Awards to be held at the Durban City Hall next Sunday. The event is one of several public invitations that the Dalai Lama has accepted during a proposed South African visit this week, amid concern that the South African government may not grant him a visa under Chinese pressure.

TRIPOLI: Muammar Gaddafi's son, al-Saadi, denied allegations of corruption and intimidation and called Interpol's decision to put him on the equivalent of its most-wanted list political, according to an email. Al-Saadi Gaddafi is under house arrest in Libyan neighbor Niger, where he fled after Tripoli fell to revolutionary forces. His father and two of his brothers are in hiding, presumably inside Libya, as fighting between revolutionary forces and Gaddafi loyalists continues on three fronts. Al-Saadi "regrets the issue of a red notice by Interpol and strenuously denies the charges made against him," an email forwarded Sunday to The Associated Press said. Interpol issued a red notice for alSaadi last week based on accusations he misappropriated property and engaged in "armed intimidation" when he headed the Libyan Football Federation. He also was a special forces commander and is the subject of UN sanctions for commanding military units involved in repression of demonstrations. The international police agency said the notice was issued in response to a request by the Libya's National Transitional Council, which has assumed leadership of the North African nation. Niger, which borders Libya on the south and long benefited from Gaddafi's largesse, has said it would study the question. Yoram Kaniuk turned to the courts in May after the interior ministry refused to alter his official religious status from Jewish to "without religion", Haaretz said. And last week, a Tel Aviv court sided with his demand, ruling that Israeli law allows citizens to be officially registered as having no religion. "Freedom from religion is a freedom derived from the right to human dignity, which is protected by the Basic Law on Human Dignity and Freedom," Haaretz quoted the ruling as saying. Kaniuk called the court's decision a "ruling of historic proportions". "I can be without religion but Jewish by nationality. I am so thrilled," he said. That has raised the ire of secular groups who have petitioned the interior ministry for years to replace the Jewish ethnicity label with an Israeli one.

PERUGIA: An Italian appeals court threw out Amanda Knox's murder conviction on Monday and ordered the young American freed after nearly four years in prison for the death of her British roommate. Knox collapsed in tears after the verdict overturning her 2009 conviction was read out. Her co-defendant, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, also was cleared of killing 21-year-old Meredith Kercher in 2007. The Kercher family looked on grimly and a bit dazed as the verdict was read out by the judge after 11 hours of deliberations by the eightmember jury. Outside the courthouse, some of the hundreds of observers shouted "Shame, shame!" Yet inside the frescoed courtroom, Knox's parents, who have regularly traveled from their home in Seattle to Perugia to visit the 24year-old over the past four years, hugged their lawyers and cried with joy. "We've been waiting for this for four years," said one of Sollecito's lawyers, Giulia Bongiorno.

The judge upheld Knox's conviction on a charge of slander for accusing bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba of carrying out the killing. He set the sentence at three years, meaning for time served. Knox has been in prison since Nov. 6, 2007. Prosecutors can appeal the acquittal to Italy's highest court. There was no word late Monday if they planned to do so. In Seattle, about a dozen Knox supporters were overjoyed that she has been cleared of the murder conviction. "She's free!" and "We did it!" they shouted at a hotel where they watched the court proceedings on TV. Earlier Monday, Knox tearfully told the court she did not kill her roommate. Knox frequently paused for breath and fought back tears as she spoke in Italian to the eight members of the jury in a packed courtroom, but managed to maintain her composure during the 10minute address. "I've lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way

possible," she said of the 2007 murder of Kercher, who shared an apartment with Knox when they were both students in Perugia. "I'm paying with my life for things that I didn't do." Knox and Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. They both deny wrongdoing. "I never hurt anyone, never in my life," Sollecito said Monday in his own speech to the jury. Hundreds of eager observers gathered outside the courthouse ahead of the highly anticipated announcement, joining television vans that have been camped out for more than a week. One hundred reporters were being allowed into the subterranean courtroom. Observers lined the street leading to the courthouse, taking pictures as the two vans carrying Knox and Sollecito from the prison to the court passed by.

Transitional Council taken without appropriate regard to the current absence of a functioning, effective and fair system of justice in Libya." It said al-Saadi "worked tirelessly to promote football in Libya, priding himself on the fact that Libya was formerly selected to host the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations." It added that Gaddafi's son "continues to call on all sides to seek a negotiated and peaceful resolution to the present conflict." The South African Football Association has signed an agreement with Libya's post-Gaddafi football federation to host the 2013 African Cup of Nations, while Libya will stage the 2017 games. The email was relayed to the AP on Sunday by defense attorney Nick Kaufman, who has been involved in a number of international criminal cases. Kaufman said he was contacted by an intermediary he identified as al-Saadi's press secretary, Jackie Frazier. Al-Saadi fled to Niger in mid-September along with several other regime loyalists, including some generals. Interpol also has issued red notices for Muammar Gaddafi and his son Seif al-Islam upon request by the Hague-based International Criminal Court. Both men have been charged with crimes against humanity. Interpol had urged authorities in Niger and surrounding countries -- and those with direct flights to Niger -- to watch out for and arrest Gaddafi "with a view to returning him to Libya" for prosecution. Interpol's red notices are the highest-level alerts they can issue to their member countries.

PARIS: An ozone hole five times the size of California opened over the Arctic this spring, matching ozone loss over Antarctica for the first time on record, scientists said on Sunday. Formed by a deep chill over the North Pole, the unprecedented hole at one point shifted over eastern Europe, Russia and Mongolia, exposing populations to higher, but unsustained, levels of ultra-violet light. The Ozone layer comes under seasonal attack in both polar regions in the local winter-spring. Part of the loss comes from man-made chlorinebased compounds, once widely used in refrigerants and consumer aerosols, that are being phased out under the United Nation's Montreal Protocol. But the loss itself is driven by deep cold, which causes water vapour and nitric acid to condense into clouds. Ozone loss over the Antarctic is traditionally much bigger than over the Arctic because of the lower temperatures.

Didn't question Sachin's greatness : Afridi 22

SPORTS

October 2011

NEW DELHI: Just a day after claiming that he saw Sachin Tendulkar's legs trembling while facing Shoaib Akhtar, Pakistan's former captain Shahid Afridi has now stated that he did not intend to question the Indian batting icon's greatness and was only talking about one incident. "I am not denying what I have said. I have seen that Tendulkar was not at all comfortable against Shoaib in Kolkata Test in 1999. It was Shoaib's first tour of India and he bowled out Sachin without giving him a chance to open his account. He also claimed (Rahul) Dravid's wicket in both the innings," Afridi said from Karachi. "Shoaib was in full form on that tour and had tremendous speed. He terrorised almost all the batsmen in the world at that time. I have seen Sachin trembling as I was fielding at square leg. I am still saying that.

"But this was only one incident. He never spared Shoaib after that. We all have seen what happened in 2003 World Cup," he added. Afridi went on to state that the Indian batsman does not need his certificate. "Sachin is one of the best batsmen and the whole world knows this. He does not need mine or anybody else's certificate. His records speak for him," Afridi said. The controversy-prone former captain on Saturday backed his Akhtar's claim that Tendulkar was uncomfortable against his pace, saying that he had once witnessed the Indian batsman "trembling" while facing the pacer. Afridi, who retired after revolting against his own board and has a history of making controversial remarks, said Tendulkar was uneasy against Akhtar, a claim which the

pacer made in his recently-launched autobiography 'Controversially Yours'. Afridi said his remarks should not be construed as demeaning to Tendulkar. "I am not raising any

BANGKOK: Britain's Andy Murray hammered Donald Young of America 6-2, 6-0 in an awesome show of power on Sunday to win the ATP Thailand open, his third title of the season. The top-seeded Scot, 24, crushed any faint hopes of firsttime finalist Young, ranked 55th, with a dominating performance, romping to victory in just 47 minutes. "I barely made any errors. I was able to take all of my opportunities. It was a great match for me," said Murray, who lost the first final he played in Bangkok in 2005 when he went down to Roger Federer. This time Murray himself used all his experience against Young, who will still rise to a career-best placing inside the Top 50 in Monday's rankings despite his resounding defeat. "I played very well today, by far my best match of the tournament," said Murray, winner of 19 career titles.

LONDON: Kyle Walker's first goal for Tottenham sealed a 2-1 victory for Harry Redknapp's side over their north London rivals Arsenal at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Walker caught out Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with a 30-yard strike in the second half after Aaron Ramsey had cancelled out Tottenham midfielder Rafael van Der Vaart's first half opener. The result means Tottenham move up to sixth place, five points ahead of their hated neighbours after a derby victory that brought an abrupt end to Arsenal's recent revival. This was the Gunners' fourth defeat in seven Premier League games and they are 15th in the table, just two points off the relegation zone. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's frustration was evident in a fractious exchange with Clive Allen, the Tottenham coach, on his way down

the tunnel after the final whistle. The visitors had appeared capable of claiming at least a point until Walker drilled in a powerful long range shot that found its way through the arms of Szczesny, summing up the Gunners' difficult start to the campaign. Wenger marked the 15th anniversary of his appointment as manager two days before this game by praising his side's spirit and mental strength after three successive victories over Shrewsbury, Bolton and Olympiakos. But that run was always under threat against an in-form Spurs side inspired by former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor. Spurs had started the game brightly and should have gone ahead in the seventh minute when Van der Vaart released Scott Parker into the visiting area only for the midfielder to place his shot too close to keeper Szczesny.

Atwal makes cut at Justin Timberlake event

LAS VEGAS: Arjun Atwal allowed an excellent start in the first nine to go waste as he finished the second round in one-under 70, though he still managed to make the cut in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament. Atwal, who shot 66 in the first round, is now sixunder 136 to be placed tied 37th at the midway stage of the first event in the Fall series of the PGA Tour. Atwal, teed off from the tenth and bogeyed the 11th, but birdies on 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th saw him turn in three-under at which stage he was in line for a top-10. But a bogey on second and a double on sixth spoilt his card. A birdie on ninth, his closing hole of the day, was a small consolation. Kevin Na (63) and Charlie Wi (66) joined Jhonattan Vegas (67) in shared lead at 12-under 130 after two rounds.

question on Sachin's greatness. Everyone knows that how many sixes Sachin has smashed on Shoaib's bowling after that. But sometimes it happens. I got out on a duck against a weak opponent like Zimbabwe in Peshawar when I was at the peak of my career," he said. "Any batsman can go through this on a good wicket and opposite a good bowler. That was Shoaib's day and Sachin was nervous that day. Media should not read much into it as it can happen to Don Bradman as well," added the all-rounder. Afridi said he is a huge fan of Tendulkar both on and off the field. "I am a huge fan of Sachin. He is not only a great cricketer but a humble human being as well. I have only one photograph on the wall of my drawing room and that is of Sachin. It has Sachin's autograph on it, do I need to say more," said Afridi. When asked if he will talk

to Tendulkar to clarify his position on this issue, he said that there is no need for it. "The whole matter is blown out of proportion by Indian media. Sachin is a great cricketer and he will understand what I am saying. I have not said anything wrong," he said. "Media should play a positive role to reduce tension between the two neighbours. When we went to play the World Cup in India earlier this year, we saw all the negative reporting against Pakistani team. Indians love and respect us but not their media," he said. On the possibility of his comeback to international cricket, he said that he wants to play for another twothree years. "Inshah Allah, I will be back in national team. I think I can play for 2-3 years. I am not going to beg for it but I know that I will represent Pakistan again," said Afridi.

Radwanska beats Zvonareva to win Pan Pacific Open

TOKYO: Agnieszka Radwanska kept up her immaculate winning record in finals this season by beating Vera Zvonareva of Russia to take the WTA Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament on Saturday. The 22year-old Pole, who claimed the title at Carlsbad in her first final of the season in August, when she also beat Zvonareva, repeated her excellent performance with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the world number four. "I'm really happy, because I really had tough matches here, it's very tough to play every day, I had very long matches, so I'm really happy," said Radwanska. "To play against those like Vera, you just have to play your 100 percent and your best tennis. I was always trying my best from the first point and actually I was very focused till the end. That's why I took the two sets. "I was just feeling very good today and I'm happy about my performance, for sure," she added. Radwanska shrugged off

a 0-2 start, taking five games in a row as the Russian struggled to put away her first serves, hitting four double faults - one on a break point. Radwanska missed one set point in the eighth game and two more in the ninth, but cashed in on a fourth as the Russian hit a lob long. The Pole jumped ahead 2-0 and then 4-1 in the second set and, although she dropped her serve in the sixth, she took the following two games, the match ending with the Russian hitting a forehand wide. It was Radwanska's third straight win against Zvonareva after losing their first two meetings. It was also Radwanska's sixth career title, following victories at Pattaya City, Istanbul and Eastbourne in 2008 and Stockholm in 2007, as well as at Carlsbad. The win brought Radwanska a winner's cheque for $360,000 and she will move up to 12th in the world when the new rankings are announced next Monday.

Members of the group have vowed to stay at the park through the winter.

Awlaki death may trigger anti-US attacks worldwide: State Dept

WASHINGTON: Al-Qaida's top spiritual leader Anwar al-Awlaki's killing in a drone strike in Yemen could provide motivation for antiAmerican attacks globally by those seeking to avenge his death, the State Department has said, issuing a worldwide travel alert for its citizens. "The Department of State alerts US citizens to the potential for retaliation against US citizens and interests following the deaths of key figures in the terrorist group al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula on September 30," it said in an official statement said. The statement came yesterday, a day after Awlaki, a US-Yemeni citizen who was external operations' leader of alQaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), was killed in Yemen along with the outfit's propagandist Samir Khan. The death of Awlaki, in the near term, could provide motivation for anti-American attacks worldwide from individuals or groups seeking to retaliate against US citizens or interests because of this action, the State Department said. In the past, Awlaki and other members of AQPA have called for attacks against the United States and American citizens and interests, it said. Awlaki's standing as a preeminent English-language advocate of violence could potentially trigger anti-American acts worldwide to avenge his death, the State Department said.

In addition to what they view as excessive force and unfair treatment of minorities, including Muslims, the movement is also protesting against home foreclosures, high unemployment and the 2008 bailouts. Filmmaker Michael Moore and actress Susan Sarandon have stopped by the protesters' camp, which is plastered with posters with anti-Wall Street slogans and has a kitchen and library, to offer their support. Friday evening, more than 1,000 demonstrators, including representatives of labor organizations, held a peaceful march to police headquarters a few blocks north of City Hall to protest what they said was a heavy-handed police response the previous week. No arrests were reported.

U.S. President Barack Obama gives remarks at the Human Rights Campaign's annual dinner in Washington.

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama on Monday piled new pressure on Congress to pass his $447 billion jobs bill, saying he wanted Congress to vote on the measure this month. The president said in a cabinet meeting that it was time for lawmakers to act on the plan, a mix of tax cuts and infrastructure spending, which Obama says could create 1.9 million jobs and cut the unemployment rate to 8.1 per cent. "It's been several weeks now since I sent up the

American Jobs Act, and as I've been saying on the road, I want it back. I'm ready to sign it," he said. "So my expectation is, now that we're in the month of October, that we will schedule a vote before the end of this month." Obama said that he would talk to House Speaker John Boehner and the chamber's top Democrat Nancy Pelosi and the Senate's Democratic leader Harry Reid and his Republican minority counterpart Mitch McConnell about the need to

pass the bill. The president said that Republicans should make clear what aspects of the bill they did not like: "they should tell us what it is that they're not going to go for." "I'm very much looking forward to seeing Congress debate this bill, pass it, send it to my desk, so we can start putting hundreds of thousands of Americans back to work." Senior administration officials say that Obama will relentlessly push the jobs bill until the end of the year, seeking to push Republicans

US says Palestinians must be willing to negotiate

WASHINGTON: Holding a strong view that there would be no change in ground realities in the Middle East even if the UN passed a resolution backing a Palestinian state, the US has said the Palestinians must be willing to negotiate with the Israelis to achieve their goal. "If the United Nations passes a resolution which says we want to see Palestinians become a state and may be we upgrade their status or may be we recognise them, the next day nothing changes in Ramallah, and I want things to change," secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in an interview to Al-Hayat TV of Egypt. "I want the Palestinians to have their own state; I want them to govern themselves; I want them to continue developing economically to be a real example, to work with Egypt for the betterment of people in the region, and we know that won't happen," she said in response to a question. So, what the US has said is "very straightforward", she said. "We want to see both sides back at the table, and we criticise and make absolutely clear we don't want to see provocative actions. "We've said that about the recent announcements from the Israeli Government, but we also know that the Palestinians have to be willing to negotiate."

into a dicey political corner should they decide to block action on the measure. Republican leaders have said that they favor some aspects of the legislation, but are unlikely to pass the bill as one piece of legislation. Some senior Senate Democrats have also expressed concern at aspects of the measure, which has yet to be taken up either in the Democratic-led Senate or the Republican-led House of Representatives.

Obama: Commander in chief must support gay troops

WASHINGTON: In a sharp rebuke of his Republican rivals, President Barack Obama said on Saturday that anyone who wants to be commander in chief must support the entire US military, including gay service members. A combative Obama criticized Republican presidential candidates for staying silent when the crowd at a recent debate booed a gay soldier who asked a question of the contenders via videotape. "You want to be commander in chief? Start with standing up for the men and women who wear the uniform," Obama said during remarks at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Council, the nation's largest gay rights

organization. Obama touted his administration's efforts to repeal the military's ban on openly gay service members, as well as his orders to the Justice Department to stop enforcing a law defining marriage as between one man and one woman. But, as expected, Obama stopped short of endorsing gay marriage, saying only that "every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law." Obama has said his views on gay marriage are "evolving," but for now he only supports civil union. Obama's position on gay marriage has become a sore point for some gay activists who say they're otherwise pleased with the president's

handling of issues important to them. Some of the president's backers say he could be wasting a chance to energize key segments of his base, including young people, if he doesn't publicly advocate for gay marriage. "If he doesn't, he could be missing an opportunity to mobilize voters who need to be inspired to vote for him," said Doug Hattaway, a Democratic consultant. The president's position on gay marriage puts him at odds with some of his supporters. Numerous recent polls suggest a slight majority of Americans favor giving same-sex couples the right to marry, and support is highest among Democrats and young people.

It may only be Namibia, but the Springboks face a potential flyhalf crisis ahead of their clash against their African neighbours at the North Harbour Stadium on Thursday. While the Boks are giving away no secrets in the build-up to their third match at this year’s Rugby World Cup, with the team taking a light run in front of a few hundred eager spectators in the early morning cold and rain that greeted them, they have been hit by a string of mishaps and injuries which may see a revamped halfback combination for the match against Namibia. Coach Peter de Villiers has made it clear he wants to play his best team against the Namibians, but already he will have to do without lock Victor Matfield and midfielder Jean de Villiers, and

even though Bryan Habana rejoined training, possibly without his services as well if assistant coach Dick Muir is to be believed. Muir intimated that the trio of players who missed the 49-3 thrashing of Fiji on Saturday would also miss the Namibia game, especially given the short turnaround time set for the match. With some bruising battles ahead against Samoa and in the playoff rounds, the Boks won’t want to take any chances against the Namibians, a team they put 100 past the last time these two sides met. With flyhalf Butch James missing training on Monday -- ostensibly because of a hip flexor -- and Pat Lambie running with the injured squad thanks to a wrist injury, it came as equally bad news when incumbent flyhalf Morne Samo to wing in for Wallabies against Russia : Fijian and Wallabies backrower Radike Samo is in line to play on the right wing to cover spots in the backline, in a change Robbie Deans is expected to ring in following injuries in the backline. The Wallabies are short of midfielders - with Rob Horne, Pat McCabe and Kurtley Beale unavailable and Anthony Faingaa in serious doubt.

Fiji have been rocked by news Dominiko Waqaniburotu will miss the Pool D matches against Samoa and Wales through suspension. The flanker has been banned for three weeks for a dangerous tip tackle in Fiji's 49-3 loss to South Africa in Wellington. Waqaniburotu, who has 48 hours to appeal, would also miss the quarter-finals should the Fijians get there. A

statement from RWC organisers read: "With respect to the sanction, the offence was deemed to be mid-range (which has an entry point of six weeks). "However, taking into account mitigating factors including his admission, his excellent disciplinary record and remorse and the absence of aggravating factors, the player was suspended for a period of three weeks."

TAUPO — Despite outplaying Fiji and limiting the physical Pacific Island outfit to a single penalty in their clash at the weekend, Springbok backline coach Dick Muir said yesterday his team had a lot more to offer in the tournament. The Boks travelled to Taupo yesterday to begin preparations for their clash against Namibia on Thursday, which will be hosted at the North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, and, fortunately for the coaches, there were no injuries from the weekend’s clash. After early attempts at their tactical kicking game proved unsuccessful against Fiji’s brawny hard- running players, the Boks opted for a more structured approach by retaining possession and putting pressure on Fiji’s defence, which resulted in six tries and a convincing 49-3 victory. Apart from rubber-stamping the Springboks’ status as one of the favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, the performance also proved that the team could be a threat when they played structured rugby — a style they abandoned a few years

ago in favour of their kicking game. If the team maintains this burning form going into Thursday’s clash against the World Cup minnows, there is no doubt they will register another big win. Commenting on the team’s form a few hours after arriving in New Zealand’s adventure hot spot, Muir said: "We showed a good improvement (from the Welsh clash), but there is a lot more to come from this group and we have to head in that direction … we want to keep the momentum going. We had two physical hit-outs (against Wales and Fiji) and we are expecting the same against Namibia and Samoa. " Muir was particularly impressed with the team’s attack and said apart from a few players doing well outside of their regular positions, he was happy with the decision-making on attack. "We went into our campaign a little underdone and we said from the outset that we wanted to improve as the competition progresses," said Muir. "And to score six tries was pleasing. We exploited the opportunities given to us and when we had

Steyn was confined to bed with flu. Steyn tweeted about his illness, giving the reason why he was unable to train in the cold and wet: “Not a great day for me today.....sick in bed!!Thanks for the great support by everyone, appreciate it! Short week for us.....Cheers everyone”

REVAMPED MIDFIELD

Which means that by default the Boks don’t have a fit flyhalf and may be forced to look at Ruan Pienaar, or even Frans Steyn to fill the void if all three flyhalves are deemed too risky to play against Namibia. The Boks are set to continue with their revamped midfield and lock combinations but have given no clue as to what they will do with the rest of the team. Several players -- including Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger,

Danie Rossouw, Heinrich Brussow, Fourie du Preez and Steyn -missed training on Monday but there are no real injury worries among them. “We’re just a bit bruised…the body is a bit sore,” Burger laughed when asked on the sidelines after the bruising Fiji encounter. Meanwhile Pienaar said he was looking forward to the stadium in North Harbour, a ground which he describes as a “great surface” for kickers. Pienaar added that Namibia would provide some stern opposition even though they were considered minnows by the rest of the world. "They try to play a good brand of rugby. They're willing to throw the ball around a little bit,” Pienaar told journalists. "There's a couple of

FIJI SPORTS

guys who are playing rugby overseas and in the Currie Cup that we know. "They have lost their first two games but have really been positive in the way they've played. They are asking a lot of questions of the defence. It's going to be a good challenge."

Real overwhelm Ajax to take control of group

Nine-time European champions Real Madrid strolled to a 3-0 victory over Dutch giants Ajax on Tuesday in their Champions League match to make it maximum points from their first two matches. Goals from Cristian Ronaldo, Kaka - his first in the competition since 2009 - and French striker Karim Benzema sees them top the group two pooints ahead of Lyon. Kaka was happy with the performance. "It was a good game, I feel good and we are in a good position in the Group if we can continue like this," said the Brazilian. "It's an important game at home to Lyon next, if we win that we'll be in a very good position to finish the group as early as possible." He was also pleased with the progress he was making in his performances. "I'm improving game by game, it's not just tonight, I'm feeling good in the last few games so I'm happy with my own progress," he said. Ajax, themselves four times winner of Europe's premier club competition, started well and when Christian Eriksen tried his luck in the first minute from just outside the area goalkeeper Iker Casillas did well to parry away his shot. Former Barcelona stalwart Frank De Boer had warned his Ajax team would not be overawed before the game and their neat play saw them have the better of the opening exchanges. Icelandic forward Kolbeinn Sigthorsson missed narrowly from distance on 7 minutes and it looked like Madrid may be in for a difficult evening. It was not until the 17th minute that Madrid launched their first attack and when Sami Khedira found Benzema in the penalty area the Frenchmen should have done better than drag his shot just wide of the left post. On 22 minutes Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer was quick out of his area to block at the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo. And

when a minute later Benzema again shot wide this time to the right of goal, Ajax were warned of what was to come. It was a spectacularly quick counter-attack move on 25 minutes involving one touch passing from five different players that broke the deadlock, Ronaldo finishing with his right foot a move in which he was earlier involved. Ajax continued to enjoy the majority of possession and patiently carved out a number of attacks but it was Real who were to double their lead. Kaka received a pass from Ronaldo on 41 minutes and, instead of giving the easier return pass, turned and fired a left footed shot into the bottom right hand corner.

Coach keen to maintain Bok momentum

space we moved the ball around, which was nice to see, so we are on the right track." Looking ahead to the clash against Namibia, Muir was doubtful that the players who were ruled out of the weekend’s clash due to injury — locks Victor Matfield and Johann Muller, centre Jean de Villiers, wing Bryan Habana and flyhalf Butch James — would recover in time for the clash, but team doctor Craig Roberts said the players would be assessed at training

today and then a decision would be made . "We said we would take it one game at a time," said Muir. "There is a short turnaround time for the guys who were not available for the last match, so they will probably not be available." Judging by Roberts’s comments about Matfield, in particular, it is unlikely that the player will feature in the match due to the hamstring injury that forced him to leave the field against Wales. The good news, however, was that

Bakkies Botha should be fit to play despite being replaced at half-time against Fiji, with the team management confirming that their plan was for Botha to play only 40 minutes. "Victor did a lot of intense rehabilitation last week, which is what we wanted," said Roberts. "But we don’t want to rush him back. It is a long tournament. We will make a call on the players (today)." n Any World Cup confidence among the big three southern hemisphere teams — New Zealand, Australia and S A — has been knocked by Ireland’s upset win over Australia, the All Blacks said yesterday . Ireland’s 15-6 win in a tryless match opened the way for a southern hemisphere-northern hemisphere final after pretournament predictions had centred on a New Zealand- Australia showdown. "It just shows a little bit of arrogance we sometimes have in the southern hemisphere — we think we’re the best teams in the world — and Ireland showed last night that’s not the case," All Blacks wing Richard Kahui said.

KadirChashmawala takes editor head-on regarding Jesus talk and affinity article

Kadir Chashmawala, Southland Mall jewelry dealer was in upset mood when editor and his wife walked into hi store following the Eid celebration. After having responded editor’s Muslim greetings and shaking hands( called musafa), Kadr quickly retracted and said he was not sure whether he should even do that given the differences of the beliefs. Surprised, the editor asked Kadir Chashmawala felt that way. “You remember we walked out of a gathering in Sacramento (at Munif’s place) where you gave a speech and said ‘If Jesus was traveling by rocket, he would be still in space today’, Kadir reminded the editor. The editor said it would have been meaningful if Kadir and others had remained and questioned him right there at the time. “I would have even given you the chance to explain your views to the gathering since I

was the chairman. I would be happy to explain my position” “You should speak with our Sheikh who knows Arabic better than us,” Kadir submitted. “That will be great, if you can arrange a meeting with the Sheikh, editor. “We will,” Kadir continued, “and on the article of late Mr. Hussain, what right you had to say anything about him. The person is dead, man. What you know about him?” “Well that’s a different matter. I have been familiar with Uncle Husain’s personal and business affairs more than his closest relatives,” editor clarified. Before departing the editor asked Kadir why was he so opposed to Ahmadis and yet his own cousin married an Ahmadi girl, Sharif’s daughter. “O! Yes, that’s another thing. I was opposed to the marriage. But we were all there at the nikkah to support my cousin Ashfaq Chashmawala,” explained Kadir.
