Graphics and Gaming Backed by Intel’s HD 4400 graphics chip with 128 MB of dedicated system memory, the new Aspire S7 delivered decent results on graphics benchmark tests. Scoring 33,185 on 3DMark Ice Storm, the laptop beat the average ultraportable (27,905) and the ATIV Book 9 Plus (29,377) but trailed the Intel HD Graphics 5100 (Iris) ASUS Zenbook UX301 (38,338). On the more taxing 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme, the new S7’s 22,499 result trumps the ultraportable category average (20,483) and the ATIV Book (19,511). The Zenbook did better, with 31,151. For more serious gaming, however, the Aspire S7 failed to deliver. When we played “World of Warcraft” at 1366 x 768p resolution and effects set to autodetect, the S7 averaged 36 fps, just above the ultraportable category average of 31 fps. While playable, this showing is poorer than its predecessor’s 39 fps and also trails the Zenbook (62 fps), the MacBook Pro (52 fps at 1280 x 800p) and the ATIV Book 9 Plus (54 fps). At its native 2560 x 1440p resolution on autodetect, the Aspire S7 pushed an unplayable 22 fps.

The notebook’s 4-cell 6,280-mAh lithium-polymer battery (the same as the one in its predecessor) lasted just 6 hours and 44 minutes on Laptop Mag’s battery test, which involves continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi. with a 1.6 percent error rate, which is better than our desktop average of 77 wpm (no errors). The keyboard also features adjustable LED backlighting, which was bright and even. Our biggest bone to pick with the layout on the S7 is the odd key placement. Buttons to quickly toggle the volume, font size, display brightness and connectivity are on the second (QWERTY) row, and you activate them by pressing the Fn and relevant key. The top line lets you switch between numbers, symbols and functions. We also don’t like that the tilde button sits next to the Caps Lock, and that the latter has been reduced to a pinkie-size segment. The 4.25 x 2.5-inch touchpad is spacious and proved responsive when we performed Windows 8 gestures such as two-finger scrolling and pinch to zoom. Only the bottom half of the touchpad can be depressed to trigger clicks; pressing the bottom-right corner activates a right click, while the left side results in a regular click.

high-speed fans -- one pulls in cool air, while the other expels hot air. For the most part, this technology was effective. After 15 minutes of streaming a full-screen Hulu video, the laptop’s touchpad measured a cool 81 degrees Fahrenheit, while the space between the G and H keys hit 85 degrees. That’s about the same as the ultraportable category averages of 79 degrees (touchpad) and 84 degrees (G and H keys). We find temperatures below 95 degrees to be comfortable. However, the S7 reached 102 degrees on its underside, just below the vent. While that’s not scorching, we didn’t want to keep the system on our lap for extended periods of time.

Webcam and Ports

With its 720p webcam, the Aspire S7 took grainy but accurately colored pictures. The lime-green headphones and multicolored iPhone case in our selfie retained vibrant hues, but we saw significant noise on our face. The Aspire S7 packs plenty of connectivity options, including an HDMI-out Heat port with HDCP support, an Acer ConJust as on its predecessor, the new verter Port (which can be used with an Aspire S7 comes with a cooling sys- adapter to support miniDisplay) and tem called TwinAir that uses two small, two USB 3.0 ports for faster media

Packing a 1.6-GHz Intel Core i54200U Haswell CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), the Aspire S7 is a speedy device for daily tasks. We smoothly typed a Google Doc while streaming an episode of “American Dad” on Netflix and installing the “League of Legends” client in the background. On synthetic benchmarks, the S7 delivered above-average results, but fell short of some of its competitors. The Ultrabook’s PCMark 7 score of 4,755 is better than the ultraportable average (4,033), but not the 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-powered ASUS Zenbook (5,838) and the ATIV Book 9 Plus (5,017). The ATIV Book 9 Plus sports the same CPU as the S7, but with 4GB of RAM. The Aspire S7 did better on Geekbench 3, scoring 5,101 to beat the average ultraportable (4,473) and the ATIV Book 9 Plus (5,077). It still trailed the Zenbook (6,862) and the MacBook Pro (6,294). The 128GB SSD in the S7 booted in a mere 6 seconds. That’s less than half the time it took the average ultraportable (15 seconds), and significantly faster than the MacBook Pro (12 seconds), the Zenbook (12 seconds) and the ATIV Book 9 Plus (11 seconds). On Laptop Mag’s File Transfer Test, the new S7 copied 4.97GB of mixed-media files in 26 seconds (196 MBps), which is significantly better than the average ultraportable (118 MBps). Acer’s Ultrabook also beat the Zenbook (127 MBps) and the ATIV Book (127.2 MBps), but fell

Windows 8 gestures -- such as pinch to zoom and swiping back and forth -- worked quickly, and we easily swiped in from edges to switch between open apps. However, it did outdo the Zenbook (80 dB).

Keyboard and Touchpad

Acer added 0.3mm (0.01 inches) of key-travel distance to the new S7, making the black-on-silver island keyboard more comfortable to type on. We still wish the keyboard offered more depth, but given its sleek aesthetic, this is a minor trade-off. On the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor test, we scored an average of 85.2 words per minute

Acer Aspire Packs both beauty & Brawn If you want a laptop that packs both beauty and brawn, Acer’s new Aspire S7-392-6807 ($1,399) is a strong contender. A refresh of last year’s model, the gorgeous Windows 8.1 Ultrabook offers zippy Haswell performance and a new high-definition WQHD display. However, with this sharper panel comes a trade-off some people may not want to make.

Under the lid is a silver deck that houses a matte-silver Chiclet-style keyboard, and a rectangular touchpad with rounded corners sits below. The glossy, 13.3-inch display is protected by Gorilla Glass, lending it an air of class and security. On the white bottom of the notebook, a vent runs horizontally along the back, while two speakers sit on either side, closer to the front.

At 12.72 x 8.78 x 0.51 inches and 3.0 pounds, the new Aspire S7 has the same barely-there profile as its predecessor. It’s smaller and heavier than Asus’ Zenbook UX301 (12.8 x 8.8 x 0.6 inches, 2.6 pounds), but somewhat bigger and lighter than the MacBook Pro 13-inch with Retina display (12.35 x 8.62 x 0.71 inches, 3.46 pounds) and Samsung’s ATIV Book 9 Plus (12.6 x 8.8 x 0.54 inches, 3.2 Design pounds). Samsung mockery of iphone because of wirless charge.. Shortly after Apple announced the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, Samsung debuted a new TV ad which showcases one feature that Apple’s latest handsets do not offer (and no iPhone ever did). The tagline of Samsung’s new TV commercial is “It’s not a phone, it’s a Galaxy” - which sounds like some sort of reply to Apple’s “if it’s not an iPhone, it’s not an iPhone” tagline. In fact, the commercial itself is showing an iPhone 6 Plus for a couple of brief moments, only to underline the fact that it does not support wireless charging. At the same time, Sam-

Oppo R5.. Slimmest smart phone Once the world’s slimmest smartphone, the Oppo R5 has found a worthy heir in the face of the new R7. With the crown already forfeited, the company chose to walk out of that fight and made the R7 a touch thicker, but it still has every bit of the upmarket feel of the R5. Although it may have lost the wow factor of the razor-thin R5, the R7 is an equally fine-looking smartphone, if not even more so. The metal back with the etched Oppo logo flows into the surrounding frame forming a unibody construction, and the front glass,

gently curved at the edges (what has become known as 2.5D), is a pleasure to touch and behold. By the way, we don’t consider the R7 to be a replacement of the R5, as plenty of their hardware is practically shared. It’s simply a more balanced device, its priorities gently guided in the right direction. Frankly, the push for slimness at all cost has never been our thing. Hope you don’t get this wrong, at 6.3mm the Oppo R7 is not exactly what you’d call bulky. The extra thickness has allowed for a welcome increase in battery capacity,

a major weakness of the 4.85mm R5. Rumors prior to launch hinted at a bezelless or edge-toedge display, but this proved not to be the case. The R7 Plus is somewhat closer to that description, although it still doesn’t truly amaze. Instead the R7 packs a 5-inch AMOLED display, a careful step back from the 5.2 inches of the R5. This was perhaps done to clearly separate the R7 from its bigger brother, the 6-inch R7 Plus. Plus, as we said, battery life is now a priority and a slightly trimmed screen should help there,

Sony warns customers against using watherproof Xperia phones under water Sony warns customers against using their waterproof Xperia phones underwater VALERIE RICHARDSON 8SHARES The #Sony #XperiaZ5 and a few older flagships come with water resistant tech underneath as we all know. However, the company has now urged its users to not use the phones underwater as it could lead to potentially damaging results. This is despite the smartphone featuring water resistance tech and the ability to sustain water pressure up to 1.5 meters. The company’s support page mentions the following “the IP rating of your device was achieved in laboratory conditions in standby mode, so you should not use the device underwater, such as taking pictures.” It’s funny that the company would change

its words now as some of its past promotional materials have endorsed the ability to take pictures underwater, like in the image above. Perhaps the company ran into some water damage related issues in such situations.

With the company’s stance now firm on this, it’s clear that Sony will not entertain any such complaints in the future. So if you have a water resistant Sony smartphone, just make sure you don’t take it swimming with you.

OPPOR7.. features exceeds its frame Bezelless it was going to be, the first of its kind, but the Oppo R7 Plus didn’t quite live to the promised edge-to-edge display. Yet, you’d be foolish to dismiss it on those grounds alone, as there’s so more to a smartphone than the size of its frame. So what if the ZTE Nubia Z9 actually has pixels spilled all the way to the sides, and the R7 Plus doesn’t? Oppo’s 6-inch phablet, positioned where midrange meets flagship, has a wonderful metal build and an appearance worthy of its topshelf aspirations. The smartphone does accomplish the bezelless look with the screen off, but fire it up and the illusion is shattered. Even so, the R7 Plus boasts an impressive

screen-to-body ratio - and while you may think that’s nothing but a catch phrase, it’s arguably one of the more meaningful scores in today’s numbers race. We’re yet to see someone disagree that battery life is something we just never seem to have enough of. a giant battery inside. The P8 Max contains a 4,360mAh cell, which is nearly twice the battery inside the standard P8. It’s good for about two-and-a-half days of use before a recharge, and will also manage a day-and-a-half of heavy use. It’s not a heavy phone at 228 grams — a Nexus 7 is 290 grams — and provided you have big enough pockets, the phone wouldn’t be annoying inside. At 6.8mm thick, it’s slimmer than the iPhone 6 Plus. The P8 Max is made from aluminum and Gorilla Glass 4, and the edges are neatly and comfortably chamfered. It fits snugly in the hand, and the slightly recessed, Sony-style oversized power button gives the phone some character. However, style is where the P8 Max’s design is lacking. Huawei says it has used curves and flat surfaces for inspiration in the P8’s design, but the wide expanse of flat on the big P8 Max makes it look a little faceless. On the back, the 13-megapixel camera lens is flush against the body, and sits next to a dual-LED flash. It occupies a tiny area, and aside from a plastic section at the base of the phone — for the antenna array, like the iPad — there is nothing to break up the monotony of a flat piece of metal. The gold and grey versions we tried were also very shiny, and the strong sheen reflected a lot of light. Minimalism means premium in Huawei’s book, and the unfussy P8 and P8 Max are both mature, consid-

ered designs that will grow on you. Sharp and colorful screen In the brief time spent with the P8 Max, the octa-core Huawei Kirin 935 processor performed without a problem, but we didn’t get a chance to try out the most exciting new features, which are all related to the camera. There are many new modes, from Light Painting and effects that recreate a longer shutter speed, to a Director mode where the P8 can connect up to three other devices, and edit together video captured from all of them. We’ll investigate in more detail when we review the regular P8. The display, which is what the P8 Max is all about, is a strong point. You may think a 1080p, 6.8-inch screen isn’t going to be any-

thing special, but it’s very sharp, and the colors are vibrant. It didn’t seem to get all that bright, but the lighting conditions were poor during the test. Like the P8, the display itself is right up against the glass, giving it a very futuristic style. It looks great. The P8 Max is a quirky device filling a small niche — the oversized phablet that’s not quite a tablet, but way beyond a smartphone — so it’s difficult to know who will buy it, especially over the P8. It’s a whopping slab of a phone, and really too big for everyday use by people with normal-sized hands. That said, the battery life and comparatively compact size makes it tempting — But only if you’ve got the hands and the pockets to handle it.

Hawawei p8 Max is the big brother Huawei spent considerable time going through some pretty obscure features during the launch of its new P8 smartphone. It was beginning to feel like it didn’t have anything really exciting to say, hence we were hearing about automatic international codes, fast roaming connections, and wind noise cancellation. All handy features, but a bit dull at a launch event. However, it did have something else to say, or rather, show. It was the P8 Max, the P8’s bigger brother — its much, much bigger brother. These days, regular smartphones have a screen that’s up to 5.5-inches in size — the P8 measures 5.2-inches — so

to make a phablet, a company has to go large. The P8 Max has a 6.8-inch display, and it’s absolutely massive. The P8 Max has a 6.8-inch display, and it’s absolutely massive Huawei’s no stranger to phones that are clearly too large to hold up to your face, and is responsible for the MediaPad range. They’re good tablets, but stupid phones. The P8 Max isn’t quite as ridiculous, but it’s way beyond even the iPhone 6 Plus in size, which is already pretty big. Huawei knows this, and has added a one-handed mode that you can access with a swipe across the navigation bar. The only trouble is, it really needs two

hands to activate in the first place. What is impressive is that although it’s massive, the overall dimensions of the P8 Max aren’t insane. It’s barely a few millimeters larger than a Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which has a 6.4-inch screen, and only 8mm wider than the 6-inch Nokia Lumia 1520. It is possible to hold it in one hand, although general use like this is almost impossible, even with the one-handed mode. The screen-to-body ratio is 83 percent, proving how compact the phone’s actual body is. The new iPhones introduce 3D Touch, which senses force to enable intuitive new ways to access features and interact with content. iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus feature Retina® HD displays made from the strongest glass on any smartphone and 7000 series aluminum, the same alloy used in the aerospace industry, in gorgeous metallic finishes that now include rose gold. iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus also introduce a transformative new approach to photography called Live Photos, bringing still images to life by capturing a moment in motion.
