CERES SANTOS CUYUGAN ALABADO has children and grandchildren in the Philippines, in Canada, and in the United States. "Where the children are, I am, "she says, not only for her chil dren but for helping others too. Thus she has involved herself in civic and advocacy organizatio in the Philippines - Children's Literature Association of the Philippines Inc. (CLAPI), the Concerned Mothers League(CML), End Child Prostitution in Asian Tourism (ECPAT), etc; in Canada - the Philippine Women Centre; and in the United States - Philippine American Women Writers and Artists (PAWWA), Literacy Alliance (Homeless Children), etc. For twenty years Mrs. Alabado taught education and literature in universities in the Philippines. She has written many books and stories for children and teenagers, for adult writers and for mothers, published in the Philippines, in the United States and in Canada. She was the first awardee of the Philippine Board of Books for the Young (PBBY) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, for pioneering in the promotion and development of a national children's literature. At present she writes a column "For the Youth" in the Philippine Canadian Times of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Through her children Arion, Alan, Ariel, Ana and Arrigo, she has established a GAWAD Ceres s.c. Alabado (cash award annually) for "outstanding children's literature" not only in the Philippines but also in Canada and the United States. As a graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature of Connecticut, Ceres says: "With what I've learned from the ICL and of the American culture, I hope to help enrich children's literature here, in more ways than writing it, as my humble contribution to my adopted country which had in a long-ago past "given" so much to my father, Dr. Gervasio Santos Cuyugan."
